DISCIPLINARY LITERACY FOR SECONDARY LEADERS

Disciplinary Literacy For Secondary Leaders Created by MAISA, GELN and MASSP

How can you provide your secondary administrators with the training they need to support teachers in moving toward more inherently motivating, academically rigorous learning experiences? The Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA), General Education Leadership Network (GELN) and Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) are proud to announce a learning series built for secondary administrators looking to increase student motivation and engagement, as well as literacy skills, across all content areas. This brand new institute has been designed with today's unique realities in mind--changed schedules, blended learning, potential interruptions to learning, and increased use of technology. With three options to choose from, every secondary administrator can select an option that best fits their busy schedule. We can't wait to learn with you!

As a Superintendent, how do you know if your building administrators are keeping up to date with legal changes that impact student discipline and managing K-12? As you hire new principals, how can you ensure they know how to respond when faced with decisions that have legal implications? MASSP has developed an online module called Project Gameplan to provide administrators with the chance to learn and explore these topics virtually and the Administrator Simulator is the perfect way for a team of K-12 administrators to walk through scenarios as a collective group.

PROJECT GAMEPLAN: KEEPING COMPLIANT SCENARIOS As part of MASSP’s Digital Learning Network, these self-facilitated courses will provide learners with the opportunity to review and understand important laws put in place to protect students and the school community. Topics to be covered include: Mandatory Reporting, Zero-Tolerance, and Anti-Bullying. In the course modules, learners will review basic laws and requirements, as well as how to interpret those requirements in a school building when working with students and staff. These modules provide a variety of learning activities including scenario games, quizzes, case studies, reflect & respond questions, as well as document and video reviews. Learners will also be able to compare and contrast their current building and district policies to the current laws.

ADMINISTRATOR SIMULATOR: STAFF ACCOUNTABILITY | TITLE IX | STUDENT DISCIPLINE If you are looking for an engaging and realistic way to practice your administrative decision-making skills, look no further than MASSP’s new Administrator Simulator series. This “choose your own adventure” style of gameplay puts you or your admin team in the middle of a scenario that will require sound judgment that will put you and your district in the best situation to support student safety, staff accountability and most importantly, without legal ramifications!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES For School Leaders

KNOW A TEACHER LEADER WHO’S READY TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP IN THEIR CAREER?

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EVERY EDUCATOR MASSP continues to strive to meet the needs of the field. It can be a challenge for busy principals to leave the district for training and it can yield uneven results when only a few principals are able to attend. To this end, MASSP has focused on increasing training opportunities in the virtual environment allowing principals to learn independently or as a team from our online modules. We are excited to share a few of our new programs with you in this brochure and have provided additional copies to share with members of your cabinet or team. If you have any questions or are interested in group pricing please call the MASSP office for more information. We look forward to working with you.

ADAPTIVE SCHOOLS SEMINAR A Collaborative Learning Experience This training not only explores what makes teams effective but how to develop skills as facilitators and knowledgeable group members in informal and formal settings of all group sizes. Participants will move beyond the idea of professional learning communities into the actual implementation, describing specific ways to weave the collaborative fabric of faculty, develop group member skills, and acquire the principles and understandings to engage a continuous cycle of a team and individual improvement. Adaptive Schools is the “how” of professional learning communities: how to behave in groups, how to lead them, and how to facilitate them for improved leading, teaching and learning.

Tell them to register for MASSP’s alternative administrator certification program, Path to Leadership! Imagine how student and staff mental health and wellness could improve through an early warning and intervention system that not only alerts key personnel when a student’s feelings change or intensify, but provides powerful social emotional learning content designed to support student and staff mental health and wellness through monitoring, support, encouragement, and understanding. Imagine how student engagement could increase and learning could improve, if each student saw the connection between the academic content they are expected to learn in school, their personal goals and aspirations, and individuals within those desired careers that each student can identify based on their academic background, life experience, language and culture. Imagine an asset based credentialing system that takes student achievement beyond GPA and test scores, to include validated credentials that are portable within post-secondary education and the workforce. Imagine Mavin. A FREE digital user interface and navigator that provides adaptive and integrated educational services anytime, anyplace, and at any pace on a mobile phone, tablet or computer with 2G, satellite, powerline internet, or broadband.

Good building administrators are hard to find, so why not grow your own? If you have a proven teacher leader or counselor perfect for an administrator position, but they lack their K-12 Administrator Certification, MASSP’s Path to Leadership program is the answer. An educator can be hired for an administrator position, without certification, however, they have six months to enroll in a program and must complete within three years. MASSP’s program is onethird the cost of a university master’s degree program and can be completed fully online in one year.

TIMELINE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION MASSP begins a new cohort every six to eight weeks, which equates to approximately six cohorts per calendar year. Information on each new cohort is posted after the previous deadline has passed. •
