We’ll be looking back at the year in numbers, evaluating the highlights and milestones that have defined 2024. And as we set our sights on 2025, we look forward to continuing to share your updates, wins, and news across the business—so keep them coming!
All that’s left to say is thank you for being part of an incredible year. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
PRE-OWNED PERSPECTIVE
Performance and Plans
First up Mark Barton is here to give us the round-up on what’s been happening in the pre-owned market this year and share his insights on what’s to come in 2025.
As the year comes to a close, we reflect on our performance in the current market conditions. Overall, it has been a reasonable year, with 564 vehicles sold, of which 358 were trucks.
MC Rental Market Performance Insights
The Volvo product line has demonstrated strong performance in the current market, which is promising. Market intelligence suggests this trend is likely to continue, influenced by the residual effects of the 2020/21 pandemic. Notably:

Commitment to Excellence
We are proud to announce that our Pre-Owned division is actively working towards becoming the leader among independent sellers of Volvo Used products in terms of Volvo warranty uptake.
• Volvo trucks have shown strong residual values, which are expected to improve further with innovations like the Volvo Aero already making a significant impact.
• In contrast, residual values for some other makes appear to be deteriorating significantly.
Volvo Contract Hire Portfolio
Projections for the Volvo contract hire portfolio in 2025 indicate approximately 800 natural contract expiries, a significant drop from the usual 2,000+ units per year. This decline is expected to lead to a demand from Volvo Used to outside sourcing from end users of Volvo product to sustain market demand, this is likely to also result in MC Rental selling approximately 80-100 Volvo vehicles to Volvo Used Trucks wholesale.
MC Rental Contract Hire
To meet evolving market needs, we have a number of new vehicles on order, arriving early to mid 2025. Amongst those vehicle orders we strategically decided to introduce the Renault T-High 520 model into the Hire Fleet. With its major components being Volvo-engineered, we anticipate it will deliver strong demand along with anticipated high residual values, aligning well with our existing portfolio and future goals.
Thank you for your support and partnership throughout the year. We look forward to continued success together in the coming year.

DEPOT DEVELOPMENTS

WITHAM

Small but Mighty and Revamped!
Another quarter brings another depot transformation, and this time it’s Witham’s turn. The small but mighty depot has undergone a complete refurbishment, and you won’t believe the difference.
These ongoing upgrades across our locations are a testament to MC’s commitment to maintaining a premium brand and service. The fresh new look not only enhances our work environment but also reinforces the high standards we aim to keep for our customers and teams alike.
But the changes don’t stop here. Witham is also taking the first steps in implementing the Lean process, aiming to boost efficiency, reduce waste, and further improve operations. Stay tuned for more updates.
We hope you’ll agree that the depots are looking better than ever!

BURGESS HILL

This year there have been a good deal of improvements at Burgess Hill, with the depot undergoing several upgrades, including cladding repairs, a fresh coat of paint for the building, offices, and reception, and upgrades to key equipment like pit jacks, brake rollers and oil reels.
HYTHE THE YEAR IN REVIEW
However, the year hasn’t been without its difficulties. After a strong start with a busy first few months to the year, business slowed in March alongside the building industry, and this trend persisted through summer. Thankfully, we’ve seen a slight upturn since October and we’re hoping this will continue to make a busier start to 2025.
I am grateful for everyone’s hard work throughout the year, thank you to the team and I look forward to a busy 2025!
Matt Springall

2024 has been a year of change for Maidstone, and while it hasn’t been without its challenges, the team’s hard work and adaptability has paid off.
One of the biggest achievements this year has been increasing headcount in the workshop, which has allowed us to better support our customers’ needs. This growth has come alongside significant updates to the depot, with many technician areas revamped and given a new lease of life— making Maidstone a more efficient and modern workplace.
Another addition with the installation of a second brake tester has enhanced our customer offering and positioned us to meet future demand. On top of this, Maidstone has gone solar, marking a good step towards sustainability.
At the front counter, the team has faced a challenging year but risen to the occasion. Their hard work has been reflected in multiple monthly ‘flash sale’ wins, which
Although this year at times has been very intense due to the ups and downs of work load I feel that as a depot of three separate workshop departments the whole team has come together and risen to every obstacle presented to them with enthusiasm and determination to provide the best service possible.
We have spent a large portion of this year working in portable offices whilst the depot was refurbished but the result was definitely worth the wait as it has created a much more vibrant area for both staff and customers.
I look forward to seeing what awaits us in 2025. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at Hythe!
Jon Craig
has been encouraging to see.
We’ve also seen some notable customer wins such as enhanced business relationships with DS Smith, welcoming Lomas Distribution to our client base and excitingly securing over 50 LNG vehicles for Asda, set to begin in 2025.
Thanks to the whole team for going over and above this year to make it as successful as can be in what has proved to be a very challenging year. The future is bright the future is Maidstone.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

SOUTHAMPTON

WITHAM
Southampton continued to go from strength-tostrength in 2024 with outstanding performances from both the Parts and Service departments that will result in a record year come the end of December.
The bus PDI work has been challenging for the whole team due to the pressure it puts on yard and workshop space, but it adds a new dimension to the business and it has been pleasing to see how everyone has pulled together to make this work.
We have again invested heavily in equipment for the workshop including new oil distribution equipment, replacement of worn and damaged tools, and a full revamp of the tool store, and this will continue into 2025. We have also welcomed a number of new members to the team and increased the management headcount which will help with the smooth running of the depot and the overall customer experience.
We have many challenges ahead of us in 2025 but we have a team who can meet these challenges and overcome them. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their hard work this year, have a great Christmas and good luck for the year ahead.
Nigel Brooks
From my perspective, 2024 has been a fantastic year for Witham. Financially, we appear to have bucked the trend, with our year-on-year performance and depot’s overall contribution substantially ahead of 2023.
THURROCK
One of the highlights this year has been the refurbishment of the front reception, service office, parts office, and supervisor office, which has greatly improved the working environment. The updates have not only made the space more modern and welcoming but also created a much nicer atmosphere for both staff and visitors.
We have also had some of our team members recognised on a larger stage. We were proud to be named VAS UK dealer of the year after Danny Fallows and Sam Jones made the final and were invited to Belgium. We also had a great result in the VISTA competition after our team the ‘MC Hammers’ came second in the UK competition meaning they made it to the semi-finals in Italy.

A big win for the year was completing the depot’s refurbishment. The transformation is incredible and has been a real boost for both staff and customers. We now have a great environment to work in, it’s a space we can all be proud of.
On a personal note, in January I’ll be entering my last four months with the company. Having Witham fully refreshed feels like leaving the depot in great shape for the next person to take over. It’s bittersweet, but I’m confident the team will continue to build on this success.
I’d also like to extend my thanks to our customers for their fantastic feedback throughout the year. To hear from Evospeed that we’re the best dealership they use and from James Morley of Morley Skips that our service is unmatched by any other manufacturer makes the hard work worth it.
Finally, to the Witham team, past and present — thank you. For 19 years, since the day our doors opened, you’ve made this depot what it is today. The success of Witham is down to your efforts, and I’m extremely grateful to have worked with such an amazing group of people. Paul Eaton
On the innovation front, Thurrock is leading the charge in electric vehicle maintenance, working with major brands DHL, Amazon and Tesco as they expand their electric fleets. It’s an exciting time for our depot as we gain experience in this field.
Despite the difficulties faced by the wider industry, the front counter sales team has performed strongly throughout the year.
I would like to say thank you to all the staff at Thurrock for their hard work and support over the past year, and for your patience during the refurbishment process.
Eric Millar

BDM BREAKTHROUGHS
Wrapping Up Q4
As 2024 draws to a close, here’s a look at the efforts of BDM team over the past quarter—and the year as a whole.

Tacho Updates: A Boost for Business
In the last edition of BDM Breakthroughs, we touched on the impact of changes to Tacho laws and how they’ve driven new business, particularly for Hythe. We’re excited to share further progress.
Following the successful conversion of 90 trucks for Alcaline, we’ve since secured an additional 44 trucks for various customers, including Freight 44, Parkers International, CPL, Active Transport, Roland Barton, and Daz Trans. These projects have collectively generated over £150,000 in revenue, with more discussions and potential contracts lined up for the new year.
Notable Wins

Seasonal Promotions: Testing New Strategies
The last quarter saw the team experimenting with seasonal promotions for parts and consumables, designed to compete with rivals. These themed campaigns – centred on Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Christmas –have allowed us to trial different approaches and gain insights into what resonates with our customers.

• Jacksons Fencing took on a new contract for a used Volvo vehicle purchased from MC Rental; keeping the process within the MC fold.
• RS Skips returned to us after several years, securing three new contracts for a unit, trailer, and rigid vehicle.
Expanding Our Presence
• Southwark Metals expanded their partnership with us, marking their fifth contract since we began working together in 2021.
• Tomato Plant continued their fleet expansion with Volvo vehicles supplied by MC, which meant taking out more contracts to be looked after at Maidstone.
Sales Progression
Despite a challenging year across the business, the BDM team has achieved some impressive results. This includes nearly £2 million in contract extensions, £930,000 in new contracts sales and substantial growth in aftermarket spend. This has resulted in £830,000 of new account spend and big one off wins.
SALES SUCCESS
Steve Moon says...
Quarter 4 has been a busy quarter with further orders that have now helped us to achieve our revised Volvo targets for 2024. Given the tough market conditions not many dealers have managed to achieve that this year.
It has also been busy with deliveries as October and November have seen 90 trucks registered so a stronger finish to the year than I predicted. This has been helped by the market returning back to more sensible trading conditions meaning bodybuilders are getting trucks turned around faster as their orderbooks have diminished.
We are also looking forward to finishing the year end at +20% market share marking a return to our normal trading patterns and numbers.
We have had some tremendous customer testimonials on the new Aero and turbo compound engine as that product is now bedding into customers operations and the hype is getting around. Castledene, Shane Huntley and Solstor to name just a few. This we are hoping to build on in 2025.

year that has felt somewhat flat at times and trying to stimulate customer demand has not been easy. However I thank the team and everyone involved for their determination and drive to push through when times are tough. It is this that sets us apart as winners. Being recognised by Volvo as ‘Dealer of the Year’ is testament to that fact and one that I hope makes everybody proud.

SALES SUCCESS

As we enter 2025 I believe this to be the first year where we are now operating in an ‘Normal’ trading environment free from the ripples of Covid 5 years before it. This will be a good barometer for us and the market. Despite the doom and gloom that we may read in the headlines I am looking forward to an unhindered year where we can again prove ourselves, products and services as the best.

We have some more tough targets to hit for 2025 with Volvo and Isuzu but I am sure with a winning attitude we can again rise to the challenge. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year and thank you very much

Volvo Trucks Gets Five Star Review in Independent Safety Test
For the first time, Euro NCAP has tested the safety of heavy-duty trucks, and Volvo Trucks has emerged as a clear leader. Both the Volvo FH and Volvo FM achieved the highest possible rating of five stars, with the Volvo FM delivering the best overall result among all tested trucks.
In addition to the five-star ratings, the Volvo FM and Volvo FH Aero received Euro NCAP’s City Safe award, recognising their strong performance in urban safety for protecting vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.
This milestone reinforces Volvo Trucks’ commitment to safety, a cornerstone of the brand since its founding. “This outstanding result makes me so proud as it confirms Volvo Trucks’ leading position in safety,” said Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
Euro NCAP’s rating evaluated critical areas like driver support, collision avoidance, and urban safety systems. With these results, Volvo continues to push beyond legal requirements, advancing its vision of zero accidents involving Volvo trucks.

RENTAL FLEET PEEK
Here Dave Hutchins looks back at the year from MC Rental
Looking back on 2024, MC Rental has continued to perform well, with strong fleet performance, increases in demand, and a robust order bank. This year, we added approximately 430 vehicles to the fleet, ensuring we remain true to our USP of offering up-to-date models that meet the evolving needs of our customers. With over 200 vehicles currently on order and 50% already allocated to confirmed customers, our order bank reflects healthy demand and confidence in our service.
Fleet utilisation for the year has averaged at an impressive 95%, just below our target of 98%. While slightly under our goal, this remains a highly respectable figure within the rental industry and underscores the efficiency of our operations.
November in particular has seen positive demand for the Christmas period, which has bolstered utilisation rates as to what we would expect for the first time in years. Tractor unit utilisation is close to 100%, highlighting strong seasonal activity.
While demand for construction-based vehicles has been lower—likely due to a slowdown in new house construction, exceptionally wet weather, and typical seasonal trends — other sectors are still showing increased enquiries in both contract hire and rental. Our flexible and competitive packages, combined with our industry expertise, continue to attract customers.

Looking ahead, we’re aware of potential economic challenges, including the possibility of rising inflation in 2025. However, with high enquiry levels, a modern fleet, and a business model built on flexibility and adaptability, MC Rental is well-positioned to navigate difficulties.
A huge thank you to the team for your hard work and dedication this year. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a great start to 2025.

VOLVO DEALER AWARDS 2024

MC Truck and Bus Does the Double
MC Truck & Bus has been named Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland Dealer of the Year 2024 and Service Market Dealer of the Year 2024!
This double win is a huge milestone and a massive recognition of the hard work, dedication, and customer-first approach that everyone across MC brings to the table.
The awards were announced in November at Volvo’s annual dealer conference, held at the new World of Volvo experience centre in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Why We Won
For the Service Market Dealer of the Year award, it was all about the performance of our workshops and the focus on keeping our customers happy. The award highlights how committed the team is to delivering high standards of service, day in and day out.
Being named Dealer of the Year (also referred to as THE BIG ONE) reflects a wider range of achievements, including:
• Strong alignment with Volvo Trucks’ values and ways of working.
• Strong performance in new truck market shares.
• Impressive growth in Genuine Volvo Parts sales.
• Always going the extra mile to exceed customer expectations.
Volvo summed it up, saying:
“We ask a huge amount of our dealers, and the performance this year – right across the network – has been very strong. MC Truck & Bus have delivered fantastic results for their customers, and for us as a manufacturer, and are continuing to raise the stakes for what’s expected of premium brand truck dealers.”
This win isn’t just about one part of the business—it’s about the whole team coming together, even in a tough year, to deliver the best we can. Earning these accolades on behalf of our teams, customers and the wider business is an amazing achievement. Our success wouldn’t be possible without the trust and feedback of our customers. Their insights are invaluable in shaping our services and ensuring we meet their evolving needs. These awards are also a shared celebration of our partnership with our them.
Bringing these two awards home to MC is a proud moment for all of us. While we celebrate this achievement, we remain committed to maintaining and exceeding the standards that led to this success.
A Message from the MC Board of Directors
Winning these two prestigious awards in a single year is a testament to our team’s resilience and dedication to delivering outstanding service. In what has been a challenging year, you have all gone above and beyond, and your collective efforts have earned us this exceptional recognition.
Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and continued commitment. Congratulations to every member of the MC team!

The Role of the Training Department
The MC Training school idea came about in the mid 90’s with the very first Instructor training course with the Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) followed by the Volvo Regional Trainers very first event.
Over the years gaining the following qualifications to list but a few, NVQ Assessor, Volvo certified Trainer diploma, IMI assessor Qualifications, IRTEC Assessor, IVR Assessor, City & Guilds Cert Ed Teaching Qualification & Battery Electric Vehicle qualifications etc. Having our own facility enabled us to develop more people, no longer reliant on the limited number of available spaces on centrally run training events from the Volvo training department.
Apprentices have been our future for many years
Long before the Volvo Apprenticeship, MC have supported apprentices through local colleges. We have had many successful apprentices too many to list them all here, but here is a great current example of the progression made possible:
• Matt Springall General Manager Burgess hill
• Adam Pierce Regional Technical Manager
• Matt Neal Regional Diagnostic Technician (Flying Spanners)
• Simon Abbnet Senior Diagnostic Technician
• Ryan Fisher Volvo Apprentice of the year 2018 to current job role Maidstone Shift Manager
• Lewis McKay Volvo Apprentice of the Year 2015 now Maidstone Diagnostic Technician
• John Walker the very first Volvo Apprentice of the year now Thurrock Diagnostic Technician
• Hannah Scruton MC Rental Fleet Technical Controller
Supporting our apprentices is a key aim of the training school from induction, to throughout the apprenticeship followed by continued development after graduation. To help support the apprentices, Alan gained the City and Guilds NVQ assessor qualifications enabling him to advise and mark their work. He also became a member of the Volvo apprentice steering Group to help develop the programme through changes and ensure the training was relevant to the workplace.
Upskilling the workforce
The training department has for nearly 30 years provided opportunities to all, to take part in mainly technical training. We have also designed, developed and continuously deliver induction training; including health and safety, customer service and quality standards. We even have ‘Simply Trucks’, which many of you will know, for non-technical employees to help them understand the products that make our business tick.
We are also able to react to new product introductions and legislation changes plus new safety features by training groups of staff quickly by using e-learning and ILT events.
Ensuring Industry Compliance. Flexibility and Customisation
Meeting our customers’ needs for Operator compliance we undertake training and assessment of our technicians to the IRTEC Inspection Technician standard with refresher Assessments every 5 years in House.
All new staff go through induction training that includes Health and Safety followed by technical training for technicians, through our onboarding events this includes software
application: including electronic service sheets, MOT Inspection & compliance, Engine service settings and adjustments, Volvo Techtool Diagnostics, Basic electrics & Euro 6 Diagnostics, culminating in an IRTEC Certificate throughout their first year. But it doesn’t stop there.
With safety in mind:
Health & Safety Training and refreshers
IMI qualification for Battery Electric Vehicles
Institute Road Transport Engineers Certificate. Institute of Vehicle Recovery Certificates
modules 1, 2 & 3 roadside technician modules
Liquid Natural Gas training for diagnostics and safety.
Many other courses are available.
We undertake Mentor training to ensure our apprentices and new starters get the best possible start and ongoing support in the workplace helping them to meet the demanding and legislative requirement of our customers and this business.

A Bit About Alan
Starting as a technician at Maidstone Commercial on the 29th February 1988, almost 37 years ago he has been in the industry for coming up to 50 years! After serving a 5 year indentured apprenticeship he has been training since the mid 90’s.
When asked if there was anything out of the ordinary for his role he said:

“I’m proud of starting the intranet, I remember asking Grahame Pearce when he was the IT manager for some space on a server to share some files on, I then went on to learn how to create the intranet (self-taught) as a way of distributing information to technicians with a click of the mouse, followed by adding links to application and portals then HR information, adding Health & Safety ISO documents for Nick Hawkins then individual branch pages, over the years making it accessible to everyone.
It makes me smile when I see the home page on almost everyone’s PC’s.“

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Meet The Team
This quarter, we’re introducing one of our newest recruits, James Allen, who’s joined us as an Isuzu Sales Executive.
James Allen
Isuzu Sales Executive
James’s career began in construction, where he contributed to some iconic projects—think the Olympic Stadium, Westfield shopping centres, and Terminal 5. (Not a bad claim to fame!) After an injury steered him onto a different path, James channelled his ambition into sales, and he hasn’t looked back since.
With over 10 years of experience in the automotive industry, James has a strong background in selling cars of all makes. Now, he’s taking on a new challenge in the world of trucks. Stepping into the Isuzu role, he’s looking forward to learning the ropes, meeting new customers, and building strong relationships.
James is particularly drawn to MC’s continued growth and its reputation for long-standing staff. “The fact that the company is growing year on year and retains its staff for so long says it all,” he says, noting the balance between work and life as another big positive.
Welcome to the team James!
Customer Compliment
An email received by Peter Booth from happy customer at TEECH for Witham
“Thank you so much for performing the vehicle inspections, at short notice before they departed on their last-round trip to Ukraine.
Paul Eaton and the guys at MC Group in Witham were extremely accommodating and diligent in creating detailed inspection reports!
The reports are very much appreciated! They give me an early sight of future mechanical problems; I can then identify and carry out preventative maintenance to reduce the risk of a costly breakdown during the journey across Europe. ”
Steven Hance - TEECH Trustee
RexCellence
Congratulations to Paul Cogger, Jon Craig and Hythe team and Matt Springall and his depot at Burgess Hill, who have all been awarded RExcellence Recognition awards this quarter. This has been due to receiving personal thanks or compliments from customers in the REx survey.

London to Brighton … AND Back again!!
Well done to Aaron Goldup and Scott Staveley from Hythe. They didn’t just complete the London to Brighton OffRoad Bike Race—they took it up a notch by first riding from Brighton to the start line in London!

Their journey kicked off at 10 pm, arriving in London by 5:30 am. After a quick change and a 45-minute break, they hit the road again, reaching Brighton by 1:30 p.m. the same day. This momentous feat was all in support of the British Heart Foundation—an amazing effort for a great cause. Well done on this huge achievement! You must have been exhausted.

Christmas Toy Campaign - DAVSS
Thanks to Sam Crabb and Maidstone for getting involved in DAVSS (Domestic Abuse Volunteer Services) Christmas Toy Campaign. The aim of the initiative is to provide at least one toy or gift for every child or young person (016) that has come into contact with their service over the last year. Last year they had almost 1000 cases with nearly 1500 children in the families, so it’s a huge task.
How the Toys for Christmas Campaign works
They run two ‘pop up shops’ in December, inviting our clients to come along and select some toys and gifts for their children or young people. They provide wrapping paper, tags, bows, tape and Santa sacks to take away so they can wrap the presents and have the enjoyment of knowing exactly what their children will be getting.
What a fantastic initiative team, well done!
If anyone else would like to get involved you can check out the details here: www.davss.org.uk/toys-for-christmas-campaign

A CATCH UP WITH NICK THORNE STAFF SPOTLIGHT
In our last edition, we took a closer look at the work done by the Maintenance Department, so this time, we thought it would be fun to shift the spotlight to Nick Thorne, the Maintenance Manager.
From his day-to-day role to what inspires him, we’re hearing about Nick’s story. Let’s find out what makes him tick.
Early Career
Can you share a bit about your educational background and how it has shaped your career?
Well, this won’t take long! I wasn’t the most studious, and left school as soon as I could to go into the motor trade, where I completed sales courses and Vauxhall Motors, and started my career as a salesman.
Tell us a bit about your background and what led you to a career in MC.
After 15 years in the motor trade, I fancied a change, and completed my advanced financial planning certificate, then became a financial advisor at Barclays Premier. I then became self employed and did another 180 and enjoyed doing car smart repairs for 5 years before moving to Canada with the family, as my wife was offered a transfer to Toronto.
Was there a particular reason or experience that meant you to pursued a career in the truck industry?
Basically, I kept in touch with an old Chipsaway colleague, and when I mentioned we were coming back, he alerted me to an opening at MC Rental. I grabbed it, and definitely have no regrets!
Looking back at your early career, is there a role or project that was particularly pivotal in your professional growth?
Without a doubt, the years I spent in the motor trade. So many interesting characters back then.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from your previous roles?
A couple I think- Always be adaptable, and deal with people at their comfort level, albeit with the language you use, and their personality style. People buy from people as they say.
Also, be prepared to take measured risks. If you see an opportunity and don’t think you have the skills..learn them!
Your Journey
You’ve had quite an interesting journey!
Can you tell us about your life moving to Canada and how it shaped who you are today?
Massively rewarding yet initially stressful!
As you can imagine, moving to the other side of the world takes a lot of planning, and some very emotional goodbyes.

However, the experiences in different cultures were so important, especially for the kids. I started afresh in the bodyshop industry trawling for work with car dealers, and ended up as Customer Service Director for a National Autobody group, which meant I travelled across Canada and learned so much from the owners there in terms of business, and e-marketing. What was it like transitioning from your life abroad to your current career in maintenance?
Easier than it might have been, due to the family like culture at MC.
I’ll never forget being bought a pair of dark socks because our worldly possessions were still in a container halfway across the Atlantic! You just have to remember, you are starting from scratch after being out of the Country for so long. Everyone was very supportive, which was greatly appreciated.
How did you first join the company, and what drew you to this line of work?
I had my interview over Skype, which was interesting! There wasn’t really any networking like Linked-in in any big way, so the main thing was that it would be local, and there was an automotive connection. I just got my head down and tried to show what I could do. It’s worked out so far!
What’s been the most rewarding part of progressing through the company to become Maintenance Manager?
I’ve always enjoyed helping to develop people, while also never forgetting you’re also one of the team. We are not always the “ glamour” department, but building great relationships with good customers and suppliers goes a long way.

Life In Music
Tell us about your time in the band - what kind of music did you play, and what was the highlight of that chapter in your life?
Before we went to Canada, I spent many years in a Whitesnake tribute band, and spent many a night in a Travelodge, and even slept on a stage in a sleeping bag once!
I’ve always been a rocker at heart, and carried that on over there. Funnily enough the set list had plenty of Bryan Adams and Nickelback!
Do you still play music or perform in your free time?
I still have a couple of guitars, but these days, I tend to be holed up at 9 with a hot chocolate lol. What’s your favourite song to play or listen to when you’re unwinding?
That’s a hard one! The song that still gives me goosebumps is “If I can dream” from Elvis’ 68 comeback special.
If you could form a band with anyone from our company, who would you recruit, and what role would they play?
That would have to be Robyn Ford. Her rendition of “my heart will go on” is the stuff of legend!
Do you think there are any parallels between being in a band and managing a maintenance team?
100% If you don’t work as a team, and leave spaces for others to shine, it’ll be a trainwreck! Are there any skills or experiences from your band days that have surprisingly helped you in your current role?
Yes, you have to sometime acknowledge that sometimes the ball doesn’t go your way but you
have to make the best of it. There’s an old adage in music. “If you hit a bum note, do it again, and people will think you’re a genius!”
Professional Life:
As someone who’s grown within the company, what advice would you give to others looking to progress in their careers?
Don’t be afraid to challenge things in a professional way. Treat every single member of staff with the respect they deserve, and ALWAYS give your staff the credit if they have a good idea.
What do you enjoy most about your current role as Maintenance Manager?
Helping to solve problems for customers, and most of all heading up a genuinely lovely team of people!
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career here, and how did you overcome it?
Well I won’t mention names, but in my first few years I did quite a bit of tongue biting! Patience is a virtue though, and the good thing is, you’re never on your own when it comes to big challenges.
Fun Stuff:
If you could have a jam session with any musician, past or present, who would it be and why?
Easy one. Freddie Mercury Nuff said!
What’s your go-to activity for relaxing after a busy day managing the team?
Ahem..I do enjoy a bit of Lego, and still have my boyhood enjoyment of the odd Airfix model. I’ve also gotten into the 3d printing world, so if you need a wine bottle holder in the shape of your favourite animal, you know where to come! Not forgetting spending every other Saturday at the mighty Stamford Bridge, my happy place!
Do you have a favourite memory from your time at the company that stands out?
Falling over head first in the ice last winter, and Lee Darch attempting to pick me up. That video is priceless… If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
I’ll give you a hint..”my record shows, I took the blows, and did it…… *** ***

DAVE HUTCHINS HOBBY HUB
In this issue of Hobby Hub, we’re taking a look into the world of motor racing with Burgess Hill technician Tom Hutchins and Group Sales Director Dave Hutchins.

Dave’s interest in the sport started in the late 1970s when his dad began banger racing. Dave had his first race in 1981, competing in a junior formula on a dirt track in Iwade. His first car? A Hillman Avenger for banger racing, again at Iwade on a dirt track racing Cortina’s, Hillman Hunter, Austin 1800, Austin Cambridge A60 plus a few more he can’t remember.
After two years of banger racing, Dave switched to non-contact Hot Rod racing in a Ford Escort, which he raced and developed over four years around the Headcorn area. A brief stint in an open wheeled class 9 grasstrack special followed, before he took a break to buy his first house.
He later returned to the track with a Class 6 Volkswagen Scirocco, competing in grasstrack racing, mainly around the Headcorn and New Romney area’s of Kent and qualifying twice for the National Championship. The move to tarmac racing came next, with Group A Hot Rods (later known as Stock Rods) at the Arena Essex. Over the years, he raced a variety of cars, including a Mini Metro with a Vauxhall engine, VW Polos, a Vauxhall Nova, and a Corsa.
The big change in direction came in 2014 when Dave purchased a Honda Civic for circuit racing. For several years he competed in Classic Sports Car Club events, teaming up with his son, Tom Hutchins, for 40-minute races with a compulsory pit stop for a driver change and sprint races with Classic and Modern Motor Racing Club. Their races took them across the UK and even to the iconic Spa in Belgium.
While Tom has since moved on to racing Pickup Trucks, Dave continues to race solo in 40-minute events and also competes with the Classic Touring Car Club. Over the past decade, his Honda Civic has undergone numerous upgrades, including driveline and suspension improvements, along with some inevitable body panel replacements.

TOM HUTCHINS
For Tom Hutchins, motor racing runs in the family. Growing up with his dad, who was already in the racing world, Tom got behind the wheel as soon as he was old enough. Starting at just 9 years old, he’s been invested in the sport ever since.
Currently competing in the Pickup Truck Championship, Tom has already earned an impressive list of accolades, including being named Pickup Truck Rookie of the Year in 2022. One of his proudest achievements is winning a test drive in a British Touring Car, a dream opportunity for many racers.
When Tom isn’t racing himself, he’s trackside supporting his dad in his competitions, making motor racing a family affair.
