DEPOT DEVELOPMENTS
MANAGERIAL MOVES
It’s been a season of change at MC Group, and as part of our ongoing evolution, we’re entering a period of transition across several depots.
We’re pleased to say that all of these senior management updates involve well-known faces, people who have already made an impact within the business and are now stepping into new roles where they can continue to thrive.
First, we bid a fond farewell to Matt Springall, General Manager at Burgess Hill, who will be leaving us this month. Matt’s MC journey began back in 2005 as an apprentice, and over the past 19 years, he’s worked his way up through multiple roles, from Diagnostic Technician to Shift Supervisor, RDT, Service Manager and finally GM. His leadership, insight, and trademark humour will be greatly missed, and we wish him all the very best in his next chapter.
As one chapter closes, a new one begins, and we’re excited to announce a series of internal moves that reflect the talent within our team:
Lee Darch will be moving from Maidstone to become General Manager at Burgess Hill, bringing with him many years of proven leadership and depot development experience.
Jon Craig, current GM at Hythe, will take over as General Manager at Maidstone, stepping up to this new challenge with enthusiasm.
Damian Cannon, previously Service Manager at Maidstone, has been promoted to General Manager at Hythe, in recognition of his strong leadership potential and performance over the last two years.
Please join us in wishing Lee, Jon and Damian luck in their new roles and as ever with our full support.
BURGESS HILL
It’s been a productive few months at Burgess Hill, with several improvements underway to support efficiency and create a better working environment.
The ATF lane has recently had a fresh coat of paint, keeping the MOT pit in top condition and ready for action.
The depot has also embarked on its Lean journey, with the workshop already looking noticeably more organised and streamlined.
In addition, the team is currently rearranging Volvo special tools, helping technicians locate what they need more quickly, saving time and boosting productivity.
Great progress all round with more to come as the Lean approach continues to take shape.
DEPOT DEVELOPMENTS
MAIDSTONE
It’s been a big year for people and progression at MC Truck & Bus Maidstone and the results speak for themselves!
The team recently welcomed their newly graduated apprentice into the fold, just in time to cheer on Glen White, who’s preparing to head to Japan this November as one of only two UK finalists in the Isuzu Grand Prix Global Final. (More on that in Staff Spotlight!)
If that wasn’t enough, Maidstone has also been named...
VAS Dealer of the Year 2024 for UK & Ireland
This is a huge honour that recognises exceptional performance, fast response times, and outstanding teamwork across the depot.
This award reflects the dedication of VAS Technicians Sam Crabb, Glen White, and Tom McKay, along with the wider support team; from technicians and parts to front counter and office staff.
Lee Darch shared:
To secure the title, Maidstone ranked in the top 20 in several key categories:
• Jobs completed in under 6 hours (83.3%–100%)
• Average scramble time (7–21 mins)
• Invoice quality (80%+)
• Top 20 usage of the OPERA app/web
• Job acceptance rate of 98% or higher
“Over the last few years we’ve focused heavily on response and repair times to offer the best possible service. To now be recognised with this award reflects the dedication across the board. Huge thanks to everyone involved.”
Congratulations to the Maidstone team from apprentices to seasoned pros, your hard work is paying off and being noticed. Keep it up!
DEPOT DEVELOPMENTS WITHAM
It’s been a busy few months of change at Witham, with some major developments both on the ground and within the team.
As many of you will know, Paul Eaton, our long serving General Manager, officially retired after 31 years of dedicated service.
Paul’s journey with MC began in 1994 as a technician at Thurrock. From there, he rose through the ranks to become Witham’s first and until now, only General Manager. Respected by colleagues across the business, Paul was known for his meticulous attention to detail, strong leadership, and down to earth approach. He leaves behind an incredible legacy and summed up his time here by saying:
“It has been a fantastic 30 years to be honest. I’ve achieved things here I never dreamed of and I will forever be grateful for that.”
Paul, will be missed but we have a word from him coming in our next edition so will keep in touch.
Taking the reins is Ryan Garratt, who has stepped up as Witham’s new General Manager. Ryan joined MC as an apprentice technician back in 1997 and has worked his way up through various technical and managerial roles, most recently serving as Service Manager at Thurrock. His dedication and high standards have earned him multiple service awards, plus a podium finish at the global VISTA competition.
At the time of writing, we’re proud to share that under Ryan’s leadership, Witham has just achieved Bronze accreditation in LEAN and is already well on the way to Silver! This reflects a strong continuation of Paul’s legacy and a promising new chapter for the depot.
A huge well done to the whole Witham team for embracing change and continuing to drive forward.
BDM BREAKTHROUGHS
It’s been a busy first half of the year across the board for our Business Development Managers, with some strong activity in parts, contracts, and customer wins. From securing key fleet support deals to making inroads into new sectors, here’s a quick update on some of the standout moments so far.
Big Wins in Waste Sector
We’ve secured two new contract wins with major waste operators in the South East. To support their 24/7 fleet operations, we’ve set up a specific parts process, ensuring minimal downtime for them.

PRODUCT PROGRESS
New Volvo Electric Truck
with 600 km Range & Superfast Charging
Volvo Unveils the Long Range FH Aero Electric
As the transport industry continues to evolve, so too does the product offering. One of the most exciting recent developments came from Volvo, with the announcement of the Volvo FH Aero Electric, a big step forward in long-haul electric transport.
This new model marks a significant step in Volvo’s mission toward zero-emission transport and presents a real opportunity for us to continue differentiating ourselves through innovation, sustainability, and industry leadership.
Why It Matters to Us
Long haul transport has traditionally been one of the toughest areas to decarbonise, but the FH Aero Electric has great potential to change that. With a 600 km range and superfast charging (20% to 80% in approx. 40 minutes), this truck redefines what’s possible.
For customers, it means the ability to operate over long distances with electric vehicles, without sacrificing productivity. For us, it represents a new level of product capability that positions MC Group at the forefront of next generation transport solutions.
Key Product Features
Megawatt Charging System (MCS) - Charge from 20% to 80% in just 40 minutes
CCS2 Charging - Offers up to 350kW for additional flexibility
Extended Range - Up to 780 kWh battery capacity
44-46 Tonne Operation - Fully compliant with UK and Ireland weight limits
E-Axle Design - Enables additional battery space without reducing payload
Volvo’s Broader Commitment
This truck is part of Volvo’s three-path strategy to net-zero emissions, which includes:
Battery Electric
Fuel Cell Electric
Renewable Fuel Combustion (e.g. HVO & biogas)
It also adds to Volvo’s growing electric fleet, now with eight models in production and over 4,900 electric trucks delivered globally
What Happens Next
The Volvo FH Aero Electric is set to launch officially in Q4 2025, but pre-orders are already open. Early interest has been strong, particularly among customers looking to stay ahead on sustainability targets.
What This Means for Us
As the FH Aero Electric rolls out, it’s helpful for all of us to understand the key benefits and position of this product. It not only strengthens our environmental credentials, but opens new conversations with customers focused on long term fleet planning and innovation.
We’ll continue to share updates as the product becomes available and customer interest grows.
SALES SUCCESS
Steve Moon says...
Reflecting back to October 2024 and Labours first budget it was difficult to stay optimistic for 2025. They announced a raft of tax increases for businesses. It was hard to see how their decisions would ultimately service the economy well certainly in the short term. All you could see was rising costs and inflation. Indeed this made many businesses reflect on their needs and duly cut the cloth to suit their budgets. All I can say is It is a good job I am not an economist. Whilst there are mixed messages coming from our customers regarding their economic outlook we have surprised ourselves with the performance YTD in a positive manner. Our strategy has been to be aggressive with the deals that are out there to win. So far its paying off, The volume in terms of Volvo truck orders is up 101% yoy split both across artic and rigids for the first 6 months. During uncertain times we have seen the market lean more onto rental propositions which again has been highlighted this year. So far 45% of orders this year have been made by M C Rental compared to 19% for the six months of 2024. We are currently in a position of having met our annual order target just after the half way point. So very encouraging indeed.
We have also increased our market share returning to pre covid levels of 23% which is also very positive news as this volume helps to maintain a healthy Volvo vehicle park to harvest labour hours and parts sales. The Volvo product in its current format seems to
of our rivals who have had a somewhat more turbulent year it would seem. DAF are still hard to beat on market share but the halo has slipped somewhat with the quality of their new offerings. Scania have had internal politics and management issues which has also seen
We make steady progress with our alternative fuels advancement with both electric and LNG whereby we have secured half of our yearly target for electric and all of our yearly target for LNG at this half way stage. Some fantastic results again by all involved especially the LNG deals to E H Nicholls and Wessex Water. We are working with the gas companies and our customers to see if we can make the difference to enhance their own CO2 reduction journeys. Again with electric the progress is slow but some great work also being done with KBC and Freightliner with some positive feedback coming from both customers.
In summary a positive 2025 so far despite the large uncertainty which still remains. Let’s stay positive and keep pushing through the challenges which you all have demonstrated so well in 2025. A massive thank you as always to everyone involved in achieving our successes so far.

RENTAL FLEET PEEK
Here Dave Hutchins provides an update on how the rental fleet is performing.
From vehicle additions and customer activity to utilisation and market pressures, it’s a useful look at current performance and the steady progress being made.
Looking back at the first half of 2025, it’s been a steady and largely positive period for the Rental fleet. So far this year, 265 vehicles have been added to the fleet, with a further 250+ on order. Encouragingly, over 80% of these are already committed to customer rental agreements, showing continued demand despite a sometimes challenging market environment.
remains strong at 96%, demonstrating ongoing demand across the portfolio. However, market wide rental rates have softened compared to previous years, which has inevitably placed some pressure on margins.
Customers with vehicles currently on order include a wide mix of returning and new names. From Parcel Power Logistics and Gregory Distribution, to Currie European Transport, World Freight Transport, and TJ Waste. Notably, PHS are taking delivery of their first new Volvos in over 15 years, marking a positive development.
Deliveries year-to-date have been fulfilled for a broad range of customers including Bestway, Life Couriers, EWM Transport, Oliver Ashworth Ltd, SKM & Son Haulage, Portaco Logistics, and Evospeed, among others.
From an operational standpoint, fleet utilisation
The second quarter saw a slight dip in activity mid-way through, but we’ve seen a pickup ahead of the summer period. The construction sector remains static and wider industry confidence is likely to be influenced by forthcoming budget announcements.
That said, MC Rental continues to operate from a position of strength thanks to a healthy order book, a strong contractual customer base, and a well-managed balance sheet. Our low gearing, giving our customer base confidence, combined with our ability to adapt quickly to changing market conditions, ensures we are well placed to navigate what lies ahead.
Thank for all your work and support so far this year, let’s keep it up.
GOOD NEWS NUMBERS
As we all know it can sometimes be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, so we’ve taken a moment to zoom out and share some headline figures that show just how much has been achieved across the Group in 2025 so far. Here we’ve pulled together some Good News Numbers. They might look like just stats on a page but they highlight the impact of everyone’s hard work and demonstrate the momentum within the Group. Let’s take a look.

TRUCKS SALES
MEET THE TEAM: CHARLIE GOODGER
Truck Sales Trainee.
From Parts to Prospects
This issue, we catch up with Charlie Goodger, who joined the company three years ago in the parts department at Hythe and is now making great strides as a Truck Sales Trainee.
In his current role, Charlie supports the sales team with a variety of daily tasks, from assisting with truck movements to liaising directly with customers and learning the full sales process. It’s all part of the bigger picture as he works toward his goal of becoming a fully fledged truck salesperson.
Reflecting on his time in the parts department, Charlie credits the experience with giving him a strong foundation: “Being in and around the industry gave me a real feel for the language, the customer interactions, and how the business operates overall.”
When asked what motivated him to make the jump to sales, Charlie says the appeal was clear: “I’ve always wanted to be in sales, and I was ready for the challenge. This was the ideal opportunity.”
It’s been a learning curve, but one Charlie is embracing. He’s quickly discovered that sales is about much more than handshakes and deals. “There’s so much detail in the specifications, and no two customers are the same. The process is more complex than I expected and there are a lot of moving parts, no pun intended!”
With no two days the same, Charlie could be doing anything from customer visits in Southampton to supporting late night logistics at Hythe. When asked about highlights, he’s clear “Just being part of this team and getting the opportunity is something I’m really proud of.”
Charlie has found the team’s support invaluable “Everyone has their own style, which has helped me build a wider perspective. It’s been great to learn from so many different approaches and start shaping my own.”
His advice to others starting out? “Stick with it. It can be tough to get your foot in the door, but it’s worth the effort.”
Away from work, Charlie keeps active playing football for Elham (where the team recently won the League Cup for the Ashford District), along with darts, golf, and socialising. And if he had his pick of any truck in the range? “It has to be the FH 780 … no question!”
Staff Spotlight: Alan Wise, A Legacy of Learning
Alan, congratulations on your retirement! After nearly five decades in the industry, how does it feel to be closing this chapter?
At the moment it feels like I’m on holiday, I’m missing the routine. But I haven’t stopped yet so the times flying.
Can you take us back to the very beginning, what first drew you to the world of transport and maintenance?
Helping my father service and repair our family cars, (at least I thought I was helping in the early days) dad had a lot of patience back then but over time with dads guidance it was me fixing the cars. As a boy I spent most of my holidays out in dads’ truck often having a drive off road. I set my sites on an apprenticeship and with some help from my dad I started a five-year indentured apprenticeship in 1975, if that hadn’t happened my fallback plan was to follow my dad’s early career and join the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers.
Looking back on your time at MC, what stands out as your proudest achievement?
So many, watching the young apprentices grow and their achievements over the years, the Vista teams successes, the qualification I have gained over the years. Including graduating as a teacher, qualifying as a forklift instructor, gaining the IVR instructor qualification, plus NVQ & IRTEC assessor, IMI electric vehicle qualifications.
Not forgetting customer training for both truck and bus products though out our region.
The MC Training School has been a cornerstone of your work, what inspired you to build it, and what impact do you hope it continues to have?
I had the opportunity to attend a training course at the Volvo training centre Warwick, the subject was chassis and steering alignment, in my early days as a technician
at Maidstone Commercials. I found that training invaluable and wanted to share this new knowledge with others, I enjoyed passing this on to others this eventually led to other subjects like brakes and air suspension. The introduction of the New FH (System 98) introduced local trainers to rollout product introduction training to the technicians quickly. My full-time training career began with the opportunity to carry out training at the Thurrock depot at first, then moving to Maidstone, eventually building the facility at Maidstone thanks to an investment in the facility and tools and I’ve been developing the facility and equipment ever since.
I would like to say a big thank you to the directors for making the investment in me and the facility the sales department and MC Rental for the loan of vehicles in the early days without their help it wouldn’t have been possible. Not forgetting the Volvo training departments both Sweden and Warwick for their continuing support over the years.
I hope the foundation I helped put in place will help my successor Joe Phipps to carry on delivering for the present and future staff.
You’ve supported countless apprentices and colleagues over the years. How does it feel knowing you’ve helped shape so many careers?
I’m proud of everyone that I may have helped along the way, with their achievement’s
Are there any particular success stories or individuals whose journeys really made you feel the impact of your work?
Too many to name individually, but all the guy’s and girls that I have come in contact with like the CSR with Simply Truck and features online, apprentices from induction to completing their apprenticeships and particularly those
that achieved Volvo apprentice of the year, not forgetting those that have gone on to be successful in their careers becoming trusted diagnostic technicians, and to guys that now run shifts and become general managers, not forgetting the apprentice to truck sales manager.
What advice would you give to the next generation of trainers and technicians coming through the ranks?
Have pride in whatever you do and make sure you get job satisfaction, be respectful of others, help and share your experience with apprentices and colleagues. Learn from the experienced, it takes time to build a reputation and it’s that hard work, that will get you noticed and get you the opportunities in the future.
What’s been the biggest change in the industry or training landscape since you started?
Health & Safety, compliance for customers, new technology like the driver safety systems, introduction of alternative fuels, like liquid natural gas & electric trucks.
You were ahead of the curve with things like launching the company intranet. What drove you to take those kinds of initiatives?
Finding solutions to problems, As the Maidstone foreman I updated the Volvo workshop manuals and service bulletins, everyone came to me for information, this was in the days before the Volvo portal and online application like Impact VDA wiring diagrams. As more depots joined the Group sharing the knowledge and information needed a solution as it was one of my hobbies building PC’s and playing with software, I taught myself how to use web design software, enabling the creation of the intranet (another Wise idea) after persuading the then IT manager to let me have some server space, most of this was done in my spare time.
Along the way adding health & safety, ISO workshop manuals for Hino Trucks, Isuzu Trucks and lots of Volvo Bus body manuals & wiring diagrams, then the introduction of the company induction documents expense’s & milage claim forms.
Over time the home page has become the link to all sorts of important information and applications like the Truck & Bus DVSA MOT manuals for technicians, lists of trained technicians, for IVR, IRTEC and tacho all allow easy access for shift, service and depot managers. Access to tool list for every depot and of course links to the Volvo portal, Tranman, Isuzu portal and many more. I also designed the first pay and performance skill matrix linked to training module’s rewarding technicians for gaining new skills performance and efficiency, using Microsoft excel, again teaching myself how to create the formulas and functions to make calculations, linking sheets and cells, creating lookup tables and produce monthly feed back to the technicians on performance and efficiency.
Is there a memory from your time at MC that always makes you smile when you look back?
In my first days I remember asking a chap driving a JCB to load a tipper, this was part of some yard improvements to increase parking space at Maidstone, “can you move your digger mate so I can get in the workshop”, only to find out later that it was the owner Tony Dawson I had called mate.. I have lots of fond memories of my time at MC, far too many to list.
Now that you’re officially retired, what are you most looking forward to in this next chapter?
Spending time with my wife and family especially my grandchildren during their school summer holidays.
Do you plan to stay connected to the industry in any way or are you hanging up your boots for good?
I want to stay connected and I’ll do that through my institute memberships and online webinars and events as a member of the IMI (Institute of the Motor Industrie) IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) and keeping in contact with some of my former colleagues.
How do you think you’ll fill the time that used to be spent planning inductions or running training sessions?
Spending more time with my wife, children and grandchildren, we plan to visit lots of towns and cities throughout the UK, also visiting zoo’s and wild life parks, as tigers, are my favourite animal, any opportunity to see one especially on my birthday. I was fortunate to get to feed a big white tiger for my last birthday that was a special day. I will also be looking for a part time job at some point.
Any hobbies or adventures you’ve been putting off that you’re excited to dive into?
I like gardening, visiting garden centres and walking around country gardens, over the last four years that’s been difficult with my worn-out knee, but walking has improved after receiving a new knee. I also follow Formula One from my sofa. And during the winter months when I can’t get out and about or in the garden, I build wooden and Lego models. And still love playing with technology big Apple fan, I like home automation and repairing upgrading computers, I will now have more time for all of the above.
What does MC mean to you? How would you describe your journey here in just a few words?
I’ve seen Maidstone Commercials transform into the successful MC Group of today. A company that has invested in its staff including me, the investment in its facilities, always giving opportunities for its staff to upskill and progress, with loyal customers coming back again and again.
If you could leave one lasting message for everyone you’ve worked with over the years, what would it be?
Thank you everyone for making my time at Maidstone Commercials / MC Truck & Bus an enjoyable experience. Not forgetting all of My Volvo colleagues over the years.
And finally… will you miss us just a little bit? (We’re definitely going to miss you!)
That will be a Big YES.
Alan it just remains to say thank you for all of us, you’ll always be part of the MC story.

Glen White to Represent Isuzu UK on the Global Stage
We’re thrilled to share some fantastic news from our Maidstone depot. Glen White, Technician at MC Truck & Bus, has been selected to represent Isuzu UK at the Isuzu Grand Prix Global Final in Japan this November!
This prestigious international competition brings together the very best technical talent from across the global Isuzu dealer network. Glen secured his place on the UK team following a demanding day of testing at Isuzu UK HQ in Hatfield, where his skills in diagnostics, technical knowledge, and calm under pressure stood out above the rest.
And he wasn’t the only one flying the flag for MC. Simon Abnett, also from Maidstone, made it to the UK finals, showcasing the incredible talent within our team.
Being chosen as one of only two technicians to represent the UK is an extraordinary achievement, and we couldn’t be prouder.
Glen, your hard work, expertise, and commitment to excellence have earned you this incredible opportunity and we’ll all be rooting for you as you take on the world’s best in Japan!
Good luck Glen, we’re backing you all the way!
Customer Compliment
Wayne Coombes received the following complimentary email from Russell Baker, the Regional Transport Manager of Freightliner Group on the receipt of his new trucks.
Well done Wayne, Paul and team. Excellent feedback and really good to hear.
“I just wanted to express my sincere thanks to you all at MC Truck & Bus for the ease of dealing with you, primarily yourself as the Sales Exec, specking the trucks to our requirements.
The trucks are first class, I can already see the driver’s excitement to put their gear in them and get behind the wheel.
The communication throughout the entire process has been exceptional.
Today the extremely thorough, informative and professional handover with Paul Carrington (Driver Trainer) was the best I’ve received since being in the Industry.
Please pass on all my thanks to everyone involved.”
Fantasy Football: And the Real Winner Is...
Last season saw Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy after an exciting title race. But while the drama unfolded on the national stage, the real suspense was a little closer to home.
Because what we were really waiting for was the result of the MC Group Fantasy Football League.
And now, after months of tactical tweaks, last-minute transfers, and nail-biting weekend fixtures, we have our champion...
Congratulations to Ryan Garratt!
Ryan proved he’s got serious managerial know how not just off the pitch at Witham, but in the virtual dugout too. He led his team to glory and secured top spot in the MC league, earning the right to lift (or wear!) the coveted Volvo jacket.
Thanks to everyone who joined in the fun and if you didn’t manage a top finish this time, there’s always this season to climb the table. Game on!

Although Matt Springall has recently moved on to pastures new (no pun intended), he was kind enough to share a glimpse into his life outside of MC before he left.
As General Manager of our Burgess Hill site, Matt was no stranger to early starts, strategic thinking, and keeping operations running smoothly. But when the work week wound down, he traded his high-vis for wellies and headed out to help run his partner’s family farm. With summer in the air and new life blooming in the fields, we thought there was no better time to catch up with Matt about his unique weekend routine, the joys (and occasional chaos) of farm life, and how this unexpected lifestyle kept him grounded, literally.
Matt, you’re the General Manager at Burgess Hill by day, but we hear you trade the office for overalls in your spare time. Tell us about the farm and how you got involved.
Yeah, so my Fiancé and I moved on to her family farm around 2 years ago. The farm employs a couple of full-time farm workers, and my Fiancé splits her time between the farm and the farm office. I help where I can in the evenings and the weekends. There’s usually something going on.
What kind of work do you usually get stuck into on the farm? Are you more of a tractor driver or a hands-on-with-the-livestock kind of guy?
So far, I’ve only really been involved with the livestock. Anything from carrying out a simple
evening check, to delivering newborns. Every now and then you can find me in a JCB, but I leave the crop work to the professionals.
Farming’s a far cry from the day-to-day of running a site, what do you enjoy most about it?
Being outside and being active, whatever the weather. This is what I miss most from my old technician days, especially my old regional technical role.
Is there a particular season or time of year you love most on the farm (we’re guessing spring might be up there)?
Yes, most definitely spring. It’s a really lovely time on the farm with lots of newborn lambs & calves. It’s a very busy time of the year, but I
like to keep busy. Between the months of March & June is when I get most involved. It’s also nice to see nature wake up after a long cold winter. I love seeing the oaks regain their leaves and the bluebells smell amazing this time of the year.
Have you picked up any unexpected skills or lessons from farm life that help you in your role? Are there any surprising transferable skills or similarities?
I’d say it’s more the other way round. My GM approach to H&S sometimes makes me stop and think before I do something I regret on the farm. There’s a lot of large machinery and large animals, so there’s a potential for it to go wrong very quickly.
What’s the most surprising or funny thing that’s happened to you while helping out on the farm?
During lambing last year, we came down one morning to find a ewe with a set of triplets. This itself was no surprise, as she was marked up to have three lambs. We put her in a separate pen to bond with her new lambs, but a short while later she was laying down pushing three more out… We quickly realised she hadn’t had the first set of triplets, but she’d stolen them from another poor ewe in the barn. We tried to re-unite the triplets with their original mother, but she rejected all three, so they all became orphans that year.
Do you have a favourite animal on the farm? Or maybe one you’d rather avoid?
I definitely have a favourite. Terry the Texel ram. He looks pretty scary, he weighs over 90kg and he grunts and snorts a lot, but he’s actually very affectionate.
What does a typical weekend look like for you during the busier seasons? Do you ever get any actual “down time”?
I’m usually up very early to check the animals and during the spring we keep a close eye on them throughout the day. I don’t get much in the way of down time, but I enjoy working on the farm, so it’s not a chore for me.
What do the rest of the team at Burgess Hill think about your farm life? Any chance of a team trip out to the farm one day?
They’re probably sick of hearing about it to be honest, so I try not to have too much “farm chat” at work. If we open a petting farm, I’ll offer some staff discounts, how about that?!
And finally, if you weren’t doing what you do now, could you see yourself full-time in the farming world? Or is it best kept as a muddybut-meaningful escape?
I’d love to do it full-time, but I’ve been in the industry for almost 2 decades and it’s what I know best. I can’t see me being a full-time farmer.
I have full admiration for all British farmers. They are battling with increasing costs, climate change & competition from imported foods. I urge anyone reading this to try your local farm shop and buy local produce, or at least try to buy British meat & veg when you’re in your local supermarket.
We’re grateful to Matt for taking the time to share this side of his life with us before moving on, and we wish him all the best in his new adventure, whether it’s managing operations or mucking out stalls! His passion, drive, and down-to-earth attitude (in every sense) will certainly be missed.
Thanks for everything, Matt and don’t forget your wellies!
