ichelle was raised in a loving family in Allen, NE, that taught her the importance of kindness, faith, and hard work, values that have shaped every season of her life. The youngest of three children, Michelle was taught that showing up for others, doing your best, and trusting in God through change were not just ideals, but a way of living, building a strong foundation of who she is today.

Being busy and eager to learn were two things that always found Michelle. “I loved being active and involved, and it started when I was a child,” she shares.

In high school, Michelle was active in choir and competed in basketball, track, and volleyball.

These experiences taught her discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, qualities that stayed with her long after graduation.

Creativity, however, was always Michelle’s true passion.

“My father built houses for a living,” Michelle says. “As a child, my parents and I would drive around different neighborhoods, and I would admire the different architecture and design elements.

I loved imagining how different spaces could be transformed.”

When she wasn’t busy with school or extracurricular activities, Michelle would paint houses, hang wallpaper, and sand and stain woodwork for her father’s business.

After high school graduation, it felt natural for Michelle to combine her love of creativity with practical skills.

She pursued a degree in interior design with a minor in business at Wayne State College in NE. This career would allow Michelle to enjoy the best of both worlds: artistry and building connections with others.

Fresh out of college, Michelle lived in Bloomfield, NE, and worked in carpet sales and later at a local, family-owned furniture store.

These roles helped her develop strong customer service skills and build meaningful relationships with clients. She also served as a paraprofessional in the local school, and it was during this time, Michelle also began the most important role of her life, becoming a mother.

“I was blessed with three children.

Raising a family became the center of everything I did,” Michelle shares.

Following a move to Laurel, NE, Michelle wanted to have the same schedule as her children, and so she worked as a paraprofessional for the school district. This position sparked an interest in education, and soon Michelle decided to pursue a degree in teaching and went back to Wayne State College for a degree in Education.

“I spent the next 12 years in the classroom,” Michelle recalls.

“While teaching was meaningful, over time I realized how much I missed having a creative outlet and needed a fresh change.”

“Change is always so hard,” Michelle notes. “It was scary because I didn’t know if I could really find work and be successful in a smaller area, but I trusted in God and was ready for a new beginning.”

What began as a full-time upholstery job for another local furniture store quickly grew into something much bigger. “I started off working out

Through kindness, consistency, and a reputation for doing things well, Michelle’s business expanded, as did her relationships with clients.

“Many of my clients became customers and then friends,” Michelle

Each project that Michelle worked on opened a door to another home, another conversation, and another connection built, something that Michelle values.

“The growth of my business wouldn’t have been possible without the people who believed in me, shared my name, and welcomed me into their homes,” Michelle says.

This trust and growth allowed Michelle to branch off and build a new space for her thriving business. Along with her husband and biggest supporter, Keith, Michelle opened the doors to her new shop twelve years ago, and business hasn’t slowed down.

Michelle has been fortunate to work with local furniture stores in the Siouxland area, along with other designers who have referred clients to her. She also credits the power of social media for helping advertise her quality and pieces that she has rebuilt.

The partnerships that have formed between Michelle and her clients is very meaningful to Michelle as she states that this has pushed her to become a perfectionist in her work as she takes great pride in delivering quality and care in everything she creates.

Michelle’s daughter, Katie, now works as her accountant and is also her best friend. “Katie and I have had many conversations about work and life in general,” Michelle shares. “I’ve instilled in her guiding principles that were taught to me from my parents regarding faith, kindness, and treating others with respect.”

Today, Michelle’s business is still thriving and busy, and each day she feels is a blessing that she is incredibly grateful for, something she is most proud of, built with her own hands… literally.

“Being able to stay creative, stay connected to design, and remain successful and busy doing what I love is nothing I take for granted,” Michelle shares.

Every step in her life, whether it was on the showroom floor, in the classroom, raising her children, or in her garage upholstering furniture, has taught Michelle patience, resilience, and the joy of creating something meaningful.

What started as a passion for Michelle became a permanent path as she now knows that a life well-lived is stitched together with love, strength, and faith.

MICHELLE What started as a 4-H project of baking cakes in middle school became a side business for Michelle. Before COVID, Michelle’s ability to bake and decorate led her to start a profitable side hustle where she baked over 1,000 cakes for clients.

You can find Michelle’s upholstered furniture all over the United States. The furthest distance that one of her pieces has traveled was an upholstered couch, which flew to an Airbnb in Belize.

Years of upholstering have caused issues with Michelle’s right hand, leading her husband, Keith, to jump in and help out when needed. Among all of her projects, sewing handbags out of military uniforms and making teddy bears and pillows out of loved ones’ clothing are the most meaningful projects that Michelle has made.

Michelle loves all kinds of music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and you can find her working with the music on. She loves to attend concerts and watch live bands, and she’s a musical trivia wiz.

In her downtime, Michelle loves spending time with her grandchildren, singing in her church choir, and surrounding herself with like-minded, kind-hearted people.

Bringing Elevated, Innovative Flavors to Siouxland with 5th Ave Catering

Making bellies happy is the goal and focus behind every detailed, delicious, and decadent meal with 5th Ave Catering.

Out of South Sioux City, Nebraska, founder and co-owner Tyson Sanchez and Shannon Smith are bringing a new style of cooking to Siouxland.

“I just love doing things you wouldn’t see in Sioux City in restaurants or by other caterers,” says Tyson. “We bring flavors and dishes here that you would get in New York, Chicago, or Miami.”

For Tyson, the idea has been brewing for the least 15 years, who has been doing concepts from fast food to steakhouse, food trucks to sports bars.

“I started thinking, ‘What’s next? What’s Sioux City lacking? There are about three major caterers in the area, so I knew there was a lot of potential and room for another, especially for in-home catering, which brings another level to the culinary experience, for the creativity and really stepping outside the bounds of the social norms in Sioux City,” Tyson explains.

Tyson brought the idea to Shannon, then co-workers and friends.

“We just knew we should go into business together,” she adds. “I’m his yang, and he’s my yin. We just bounced ideas off each other so well.”

Born out of that was 5th Ave Catering.

“Every event is different, and everyone’s tastes are different,” notes Shannon. “We want to elevate that catering experience for our customers and provide something different.”

Like a mouth-watering tenderloin fillet, topped with a lobster cream sauce, served with thick-cut asparagus and Wagyu fat mashed potatoes.

“It’s phenomenal. The sauce is a white cream-based, French-inspired lobster sauce, infused with an au Poivre sauce. So, you get the lobster taste, but there’s a kick to it from the au Poivre. It’s very popular in France, and it’s just awesome.”

Another popular item is a steak sandwich, and while that may sound simple, Tyson adds his signature touch to elevate it.

“I actually made it for the CEO of Blue Bunny. He flew in from Italy.

I did a French baguette, the best baguettes you can get. I got them shipped here. I sliced it and put pimento aioli sauce on it, topped with citrus arugula, tomato relish, and caramelized onions. Then I took a butter-basted tri-tip, sliced it, and put it on the sandwich with some provolone cheese. It was just like heaven,” Tyson shares.

Another item that will leave your taste buds singing is the saffron scallops.

“Saffron is one of the most expensive spices in the world to make, and it brings a Mediterranean taste to the dish. Pairing it with seafood is just really great.”

Bringing the best flavors also involves having a great staff.

“Our chefs come from different parts of the world and have different culinary backgrounds, like Puerto Rican or Russian,” Shannon adds.

“Some have gone to culinary school, and some bring traditional cooking.”

It’s an idea also reflected in one of Tyson’s favorite Chefs, Gordon Ramsay.

“I watched a lot of the Food Network and just fell in love with cooking. I used to watch the greats like Martha Stewart and Gordon Ramsay. So, some inspiration comes from them, research, or social media. I love dipping my toes in researching what other countries are doing, different dishes and cuisines, spices and herbs, and methods that they use,” Tyson continues.

That’s why at 5th Avenue Catering, presentation and premium products are essential.

“People don’t just eat with their taste buds. They eat with their eyes and with their environment, from the way the plate looks and how it’s set up, to the taste and smell,” explains Tyson.

“The small details can really make a big difference,” Shannon adds. “We had a wedding recently where the father of the groom said how happy he was that they had chosen us, and they had some of the best food they ever had.”

“When he told me that, that was just awesome,” adds Tyson. “That’s the goal, why we do what we do, and that’s 5th Ave Catering.”

2. Harvest Tax Losses Tax-loss harvesting involves selling investments at a loss to offset gains elsewhere in the taxable portion of your portfolio.

This strategy may reduce your taxable income and is particularly useful in volatile markets. Excess losses can be carried forward to future years and up to $3,000 annually can be used to reduce ordinary income.

As an estate-planning attorney, I often tell married clients: “Let’s talk about the will before the will to argue over the estate begins.” But even for married couples, estate planning is something that, despite the romantic soundtrack, too many people treat like the boring fine print best left undone. It shouldn't be.

With roughly 61.4 million married-couple households in the United States, marriage remains the most common form of cohabitation. But at the same time, cohabitation outside of marriage is more common than many realize. In fact, there are about 9.9 million unmarried couples living together in the United States today.

That’s a noteworthy statistic, and a good reminder that “till death do us part” is far from the only model people are embracing. If you’re married, estate-planning paperwork still matters. It ensures your surviving spouse has access to your assets, health-care decision-making, and your intentions for home, investment accounts, retirement, and other property are honored smoothly.

From the perspective of an attorney, here are a few key points I highlight when I sit down with couples (regardless of whether they’re married): • Automatic rights notwithstanding, wills and trusts still save headaches. Yes: spouses often have default rights under state law. But life changes, remarriage, children from previous relationships, real-estate ownership, and having a will (or a revocable living trust) clarify what you actually intend. Without it, intestacy rules may trigger an outcome you didn’t foresee.

• Avoiding probate — and perhaps family drama. Joint property, a living trust, or designated beneficiaries can help ensure that assets pass swiftly and privately to your spouse. Otherwise, a probate court might decide for you; and trust me, the court isn’t going to factor in who put in the new siding, helped with the kids, or whose idea it was to buy that old farm.

• Healthcare and end-of-life decisions: Powers of attorney (medical and financial) can give your spouse legal authority to act if you become incapacitated. Without them, hospitals and banks may turn to your parents or siblings instead, which, let’s hope, doesn’t lead to awkward holiday conversations.

• Flexibility for life’s changes: Whether your family grows, business interests change, or you acquire new assets, a properly drafted estate plan allows you to update your wishes without rewriting the whole story.

You may be soulmates, but unless it’s on paper, with your notarized signature, the law doesn’t assume your sweetheart automatically gets everything. It’s like expecting your spouse to win a stuffed animal at the county fair just because you were holding their ticket stub.

This living space went through a massive transformation. A soft white color replaced the rich tan on the walls. The Design Team centered the fireplace and replaced a traditional mantel and gas insert with a sleek, modern option. The oak mantel was replaced with a simple, floating piece with the television above. The black accents flanking the clean, tiled floor-to-ceiling fireplace manage to be subtle and dramatic at the same time.

What if transforming your living space didn’t require countless trips to

showrooms, agonizing over fabric swatches or wondering if that sofa you love will fit in your family room?

For nearly 30 years, Kathy Sorbe, lead designer and owner of The Elements in Storm Lake, has been making interior design remarkably simple with a service that’s as unique as it is effective: House Calls.

“Humans are visual creatures, so it’s simpler to show you how your space can look than trying to have you imagine it,” says Sorbe. “We can talk about the importance of a rug or furniture placement all day long, but until you see it in your actual room, with your lighting, your wall color, your existing furniture – you just don’t know if it’s right.”

The concept is beautifully straightforward. The Elements’ Design Team loads up their much-recognized trailer with carefully selected pieces – rugs, lamps, artwork, accessories – and brings them to your home. They arrange everything, add the finishing touches and then leave it all there for you to live with on approval.

“Risk-free,” says Sorbe. “That’s the magic word.

Our house-call service is completely risk-free.”

A service born from understanding, Sorbe developed the house-call concept in Des Moines nearly three decades ago, recognizing a fundamental challenge in interior design: the gap between imagining how something will look and actually seeing it in a space.

This updated take on a classic club chair is a hefty piece, and its size may stop homeowners from considering something that looks this large lined up in a furniture store. But in a large room with high ceilings, the scale is perfect.

Hanging large art or multiple pieces frequently end with frustration and a few nail holes to fill. Anyone who has struggled to hang art and just can’t get it perfectly straight will appreciate the Design Team’s skill installing wall art.

“I’ve completed literally thousands of House Calls over the years, for budgets small and large,” says Sorbe.

“Sometimes it’s a complete room transformation, and sometimes it’s helping someone finish a simple bookcase. Every project matters to us.”

The service has become a signature of The Elements, setting them apart in an industry where homeowners typically purchase items and hope for the best. Instead, Sorbe and her team eliminate the guesswork.

“We try to make it simple, honestly,” Sorbe explains.

“We can take accessories such as rugs, lamps or artwork to the client’s home, put it in place, arrange their furniture and leave it there on approval.”

The process begins with a conversation. Homeowners work with The Elements’ Design Team to discuss their needs, challenges and vision for their space.

The Design Team ask questions about how the room is used, what’s working and what isn’t and what the homeowner hopes to achieve.

From there, the Design Team creates scaled drawings, illustrating furniture placement and layout. Then, many clients will order custom furniture, or the team selects pieces from the Storm Lake showroom’s extensive inventory. The store features a deep selection of upholstered and leather furniture, art, tables, rugs, consoles, benches and more. New shipments arrive almost daily, so there’s always something fresh.

“Much of what we pull for House Calls is already in the store,” says Sorbe. “But we also can order custom furniture, so homeowners get exactly what they want.”

Once the items are selected and any custom furniture arrives, they’re loaded into The Elements’ trailer, and the Design Team heads out to the client’s home. This is where the real magic happens. They don’t just drop things off – they arrange furniture, hang art and place accessories.

Lighting can be one of the most challenging decisions a homeowner will make. This sleek, modular chandelier is inspired by a midcentury modern Sputnik chandelier but with a contemporary, sculptural feel.

“We arrange everything and then we leave,” explains Sorbe. “You get to live with it, see how it functions in your daily life and what your family thinks. If you love it, fantastic. If something isn’t quite right, we try something different. When we’re done, we want you to truly LOVE your new space.”

While The Elements is based in Storm Lake, the Design Team’s reach extends throughout Iowa and the Midwest with recent projects as far as Tennessee and Florida. They visit Sioux City and the Dakota Dunes area almost weekly and are frequently in Okoboji.

“We go everywhere,” says Sorbe. “With our house-call service, we travel all over and don’t say ‘no’ to anybody!”

I am spending some time with some young leaders in our organizations right now to do some training. I have been working in all three of our businesses this last year bringing more order for the new way that we know we need to look at things, and I’ve been building systems. As we have been transitioning many things in the coffeehouse and the ministry and now in Red Shed Enterprises, more and more clarity has come, and we have hired a couple new people to cover some key leadership positions. Some of it is just shifting and also for people to step up into their role in a greater way. The great thing is that we have what we need in people, and those people are more than willing to work hard, and they have given me permission to speak into how they are working and leading. This is really about growth and that is always hard because it forces you to look internally at how you think and what you believe at your core. It’s all about facing the giants in our lives that have loomed there in our minds, and the fear of those things that have held us back from living out who we truly are. God has given us all potential to be world changers through influence, and it’s always based on love and lifting people up, which is a really motivating purpose to live by. People will

choose to follow you when they know you and there is relationship over time that has proven to them that your heart is in the right place. They notice what you have done for others and for them and they want to do that also. But can they believe for themselves?

I have learned so much through opening the coffeehouse sixteen years ago that has helped me to live differently because it forced me to go farther than I ever thought I could. I had so many limiting beliefs that controlled me and, in many ways, I was getting up every day and forcing myself to keep going, but I felt like a fake. That was because I had never done any of this before and yet I didn’t have a choice to stop. What I didn’t see and understand was that I was learning by doing and it was working.

Things were continuing to improve and there did come a point where I knew that I also needed some formal training and that’s when I joined the John Maxwell Team. John is such a great motivator and teacher and reading his books and doing the work that is required to go to the certification was vital for me. My leader of my small group was also a coach, and I hired her to coach me and she became a dear friend. Becky began to ask good questions and speak into situations that caused me to think differently. She gave me assignments and held me to deadlines that forced me to do hard things that I didn’t think I could. I took specific trainings that gave me different perspectives when it came to how people work together and why they do what they do. I love people and I am very long suffering with others, but it made such a difference to learn and understand more about differing personalities and the why behind the what.

Becoming a certified coach was good for me at the time because it solidified for

me what was already happening through the years, and it gave me the confidence to do what I was made to do. I love to encourage others and more than anything I know that I have the mind and the ability to run these businesses. But I will stay open to learning and adjusting as things need to be. I am not prideful about this, but I believe that I can do it. There is a big difference.

My goal for this time of hard work that I am pursuing is to help those around me to become positive influencers, which is about developing them and then they develop others too. When we get to that level of care and love for others it just starts adding up in huge ways that begin to lift everyone’s lid, and they feel the love and respect. Respect breeds respect and also the opposite can happen, of course. We can’t make it about holding a position and so do what I say, not what I do. We have to keep the heart in check and walk in humility, which is always the biggest challenge as a God-fearing leader. My early mornings have to start out with coming before God and having a willingness to ask and listen to the stirrings in my heart that He prompts by the Spirit. Without self-examination in prayer, it is a slippery slope for all of us and the constant reminder that in leadership there will always be hard things to deal with because others that don’t understand and aren’t on the same page will come against all the good that was intended. Leadership is a lonely place most times because leaders are blazing a trail for others to follow, plain and simple. The path that leaders are creating is for others to join and we have to keep going trusting that over time it will bear itself out in the way that it will help to improve their daily life and daily work. That’s what I have experienced and learned about continuous improvement and how it has impacted my life and my work.

I get excited about how much better it can be! I will start to see how and where we are stuck and what we can do to change it. There are many different applications of this, and it has to do with our personal lives and our work, as well as how it effects our relationships and our future in big and small ways that make such a difference.

For me the things that have continued to make a difference in my life and leadership is the willingness to say hard things (with grace) and do the right things at the right time. It can’t be about people pleasing and doubting what you see. There are times that you are aware of things, and we have to accept what it is and then take some steps and act on it, trusting your gut. When we do that, we are modeling for those that we are leading, and they will notice and begin to learn what that needs to look like in their own life. I know this is a time of growth and trust for myself and for my team now that we are three years into our repurposing after selling Wells. We learned so much and walked through this when we sold the business and wanted to set them and the community up for success, now it is time for a transition in the other things that we are doing in these years together.

We have to be responsible for what we have started and think about who and how it will continue. We want to finish well and also teach others the same thing.

How exciting for Cory Cunard to move into a newly finished location! Cory purchased Bike Central from Kevin Richards in Le Mars in 2024. The bike shop had been in its location since 2011 just about a block further down the street in the old Hendrick & Sons building. I interviewed Cory in 2024 and did a story on him then, but we knew he would be moving into a building that Mike and I had purchased that was the old Frugal Fusion location that we began construction on this year in March. Cory knew he was going to be losing his lease in his current location and so the timing has been perfect for him and for the owner of the building who will be doing something else exciting in there. Cory has done some research about his new location, and he said that it was built in the 1880’s and that at some point it used to be a Coast-to-Coast Store and they had kids bikes in the basement.

This newly renovated building was probably one of the worst on Central Avenue when we purchased it. As we got into it, we became aware that the building wasn’t structurally safe, as well as the building next door. We are still working on the building next door and also the lofts upstairs. They will be two luxury lofts with garages, which is the first in downtown Le Mars.

Each will have a double garage right outside the back doors and across the alley. The back walls on both of these buildings had to be completely rebuilt because the brick exterior walls weren’t even connected to the foundation anymore. The whole space is solid now and looks beautiful, as well as the front façade has been tuck pointed and some brick had to be replaced and is now painted beautifully and fully restored to the period that it was built. I had fun picking out the colors for the front of those two buildings.

new business will be yet. We are still looking for an entrepreneur to go in there. We build unique spaces for unique places.

Cory and his wife live in Le Mars with their five children and they get them all out on bikes on the trails and pulling their youngest in a bike trailer. They enjoy the trail system in Le Mars, and he had shared with me that bicycles make communities and families better.

When I met with him last time, it was cold outside and December in Iowa can be rough, but he had ridden his bike to work. In smaller communities’ he said, people can do that and it is a great way to get healthy and have an adventure! We are happy for this next adventure in his business, and his new shop is beautiful and

Cory Cunard has a background in business and finance. He has a passion for healthy living with a solid plan for what that can look like. His love of cycling started in college at Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa. He had a good group of friends that would ride consistently and it stuck. He had done Ragbrai a couple times in college too, as well as he had ridden competitively a little bit also. Cory said he has always done his own “wrenching” on his bikes and that he had a love for maintenance work on bikes too, which has come in handy at his store. Cory carries a full lineup

of bicycles including electric bikes. His main brands are Specialized, Cannondale, and Aventon E-Bikes. It is a full-service shop, and he also will carry footwear and apparel, as well as many other things that would support bike riding.

Red Shed Enterprises, and our specialty really is taking old buildings and replacing all the infrastructure from top to bottom to meet current code. Then we build out the walls and the windows and even the entrance and doorways to what the period of the original building was. It always includes electrical and plumbing and HVAC, as well as roofing. When these buildings were first built most business owners lived above their business. Cory and his family will not be doing that, but there will be a really beautiful new 3-bedroom loft upstairs with a separate entrance on Central Avenue.

I love the mission statement that Cory wrote for his business - To aggressively promote health, wellness, active lifestyles, and shared family experiences in Northwest Iowa through cycling and other outdoor activities.

When we have a business owner that is interested in one of our buildings we sit down and discuss all the details that are pertinent. Cory was working with Brian Hawkins, a consultant from Fixture Lab and was able to design what he wanted in his new shop. He had also visited other bike shops in the cities and saw things he liked and didn’t. Our development company is called

Recognizing When It’s Time It can be difficult to know when a loved one may need additional support. The Academy by Belle, an apprenticeship program for developing stylists, opened in October to address a critical gap in cosmetology education.

Sacha Williams and Joshua Eden-Hanson, co-owners and master stylists for Belle Salon & Spa, created the program after recognizing what new stylists lacked: structured, hands-on training beyond beauty school.

"We looked at the challenges many graduates face when transitioning into a full-time stylist role and drew inspiration from successful mentorshipbased programs used in top salons across the country," Sacha explains.

By listening to her team's needs, she designed a program that "blends real-world experience, advanced education, and one-on-one coaching."

"The goal was to create something that prepares stylists more completely, supports their growth, and strengthens the future of our salon," Sacha adds.

Stylists Through Mentorship

Apprentices are hired as Belle team members, working alongside experienced stylists while completing a guided curriculum. "This apprenticeship program is specifically targeted for individuals who want to earn their cosmetology license through hands-on training rather than the traditional beauty school route. It's designed for people who prefer learning in a real salon environment, working directly with guests and experienced stylists while completing the state-required hours for licensure," Sacha shares.

The program focuses on four elements: foundational and advanced education covering cutting, color, styling, consultations, and product knowledge; shadowing and assisted training where apprentices observe appointments and assist with services; model days allowing supervised practical application; and professional development teaching business skills like booking, retention, and guest experience.

"By the end of the program, apprentices have real-world experience, advanced technical skills, and a deep understanding of Belle's service standards, fully preparing them to step behind the chair with confidence and success," Sacha notes.

Apprentices work consistent schedules with hourly pay for training, education, and salon work. Upon completion and licensure, they transition to stylist positions with standard compensation. The program requires a $450 enrollment fee and $125 monthly fee.

"I would encourage this apprenticeship program because it gives future stylists a more practical, confidence-building path to obtaining their cosmetology license. Instead of learning mostly in a classroom, apprentices are immersed in real salon work from the very beginning, seeing real guests, real services, and real expectations," Sacha concludes.

In 2018, Steve Boote saw a news segment about Color the Wind, a winter kite festival in Clear Lake, Iowa, that caught his attention.

“I saw a media clip and thought the kites were beautiful and majestic on the ice with all of the colors, and I thought it might be fun to do at the Okoboji Winter Games,” Steve recalls.

For the first time, the Sioux Falls construction company owner witnessed the breathtaking spectacle of Show Kites filling the winter sky. Curious about what he’d seen, Steve discovered Peter Lynn Kites (PLK) from New Zealand.

“I did some research on the Peter Lynn Kites’ website, and bought all 12 kites in their inventory in sizes ranging from small to large,” Steve explains.

When the shipment arrived at his home, Steve was thrilled, but as he unpacked the complicated mountain of nylon and tangled lines sprawled across the floor, his excitement quickly became reality.

Realizing he needed expert guidance, Steve reached out to Peter Lynn Kites for help. “I asked if there was anyone in the United States who could teach me how to fly them, and they recommended professional kite flier, Blake Pelton from Draper, Utah.”

Blake is a Peter Lynn Kites dealer, test pilot, and master flyer. Together with Blake and his wife, Olivia, Steve and his wife, Lori, and son, Josh, successfully launched all twelve kites. Steve thought, “We need to do this as a festival at the Winter Games!”

Blake came up with the perfect name: #BojiKites. He would also prove instrumental in recruiting world-class kite flyers from across the globe.

Their first big opportunity came at the 2019 University of Okoboji Winter Games. Steve, Lori, their son Josh, and Blake and Olivia formed the original Kite Team. In the inaugural event, every kite took flight against the frozen winds.

But Steve had bigger dreams than just flying kites. “Kite festivals are an individual sport held in both winter and summer. We wanted to do more than just fly kites; we wanted to put on a show,” he explains.

That vision has become reality. The #BojiKites Festival has grown from those initial twelve kites to become one of the largest kite festivals in the country.

“In 2024, we had 25-30 [fliers]. In 2026, we are expecting around 55,” Steve notes.

What sets #BojiKites apart is Steve’s commitment to excellence. “We are one of the only festivals that pays fliers to attend, including their travel costs,” he explains. The festival has been self-funded by Steve and his family for six years, though he acknowledges, “this is not sustainable in the long run. We need this to be running on its own.”

After taking 2025 off to organize and strategically grow, the festival returns January 23-24, 2026, guided by a new steering committee consisting of Steve Boote, Jeff Vierkant, Cassidy Carney, and Heath Williams. With renewed support from Historic Arnolds Park Amusement Park, the Iowa Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce, and local donors, #BojiKites is soaring toward an even greater future, pursuing recognition as the world’s largest kiting event on ice.

Did you know that the amount of lead dust it takes to poison a child is so minuscule that it’s invisible on toys, floors, or other surfaces? Yikes!

LEAD AWARENESS:

Since 1992, homes built before 1978 have been required to disclose the potential presence of lead paint. Real estate agents, sellers, and buyers must acknowledge and inform others about this risk.

If your home was constructed in 1978 or earlier, there’s a good chance it contains lead paint, the very product that caused such concern before being banned.

Lead is a highly toxic metal that negatively affects nearly every organ system in the body, with young children, especially those seven years and younger, being the most vulnerable. Lead interferes with their ability to absorb essential minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium, which are critical for healthy brain and nerve development.

Lead poisoning can lead to developmental delays, learning difficulties, lowered IQ, and has even been linked to ADHD. (*Sources: www.cdc.gov Environmental Health and Medicine Education Lead Toxicity).

Awareness is key. The presence of lead paint doesn’t mean children can’t live in older homes, but it does mean that homeowners must educate themselves on how to protect their kids. Since children often show no signs of lead poisoning, testing isn’t a routine part of wellness check-ups, but parents can request it. It’s recommended that children be tested at 12 and 24 months, and annually if they’re at high risk, meaning they live in or frequently visit a home built before 1978.

Homeowners can assess their homes for lead levels using an XRF analyzer, which tests surfaces for high levels of lead.

To prevent lead exposure, homeowners should ensure there’s no peeling paint anywhere in the home, especially on windowsills, wood trim, and banisters. If you plan to scrape and paint, clean up any paint chips promptly, as they can be very hazardous. During remodeling projects, it’s best to keep children away from the area, especially when walls or plaster are being removed.

Alicia Sanders, an Environmental Specialist and Elevated Blood Lead (EBL) Inspector/Risk Assessor with the Siouxland District Health Department, mentions that testing rates are low in Siouxland, highlighting a significant lack of awareness about the dangers of lead poisoning for children.

Bridget and her business partner, Dr. John Stollberg, OTD, OTR/L, CHT, launched their partnership in November 2020. John, who knew Bridget through her entrepreneurial success in Siouxland, recognized their complementary services and approached her about collaboration.

Bridget’s entrepreneurial ventures include Tri-State Nursing, a temporary supplemental staffing agency that connects nurses with hospitals facing shortages, and a home care service operating 24/7 to provide everything from companionship and daily living assistance to skilled nursing care, including infusions and medication management.

“Some people need assistance in their home, companionship, help with daily living, from a bath, fixing a meal, straightening up their home, to skilled nursing with infusions, drawing blood, or medication checks,” Bridget adds.

“I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, and it was sink or swim, and I wasn’t about to drown,” Bridget notes about her business acumen.

Over five years, their partnership has assembled talented clinicians offering specialized services. In October 2025, they purchased the former Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers, expanding into what is now Dynamic Physical Therapy.

“We wanted to give more options to the Siouxland community,” John notes. The acquisition brought specialized pelvic and vestibular therapy capabilities that complement their existing services.
