Sports shaped his identity from a young age. Growing up in a busy household with two brothers and a dad who worked as a sportscaster, Nick says if he wasn’t at one of his own practices or games, he was at one of his brothers’.

That led him to the football team at Augustana College.

Ironically, he once swore he’d never attend Augie until a recruiting visit and a weekend with his older brother changed his tune.

The schedule of a college strength coach is demanding, between traveling with the team and working odd hours.

After considering that, Nick began working in general fitness at Life Time, a Minneapolis-based health club.

There, he discovered that beyond training, he had a knack for teaching, developing people, and leading teams.

“It just felt right,” Nick says. “The people, the community, and the experiences were second to none.”

That foundation prepared him for a meeting that his dad arranged back in Sioux Falls with GreatLIFE founder Tom Walsh, an encounter Nick says initially felt random, but would end up being a game-changer for his career and lifestyle.

Nick graduated in 2006 with a degree in exercise science and a dream of becoming a strength coach. He married his college sweetheart, Alison, and they moved to the Twin Cities, where she started law school, and he began shadowing a college strength coach.

Nick had expected a simple conversation about racquetball programming at the Woodlake facility; his dad was eager to bring it back to the club after years of hiatus, but instead, it became clear that Nick and Tom shared a vision for something bigger.

But it wasn’t long into that shadowing experience before the coach asked him a question that would ultimately shift his career trajectory.

“Two weeks later, we sold our house and moved back to Sioux Falls,” Nick says. “It was one of those God’s-timing moments.”

“He asked if I wanted to have a family, and when I said, ‘Yes,’ it was, ‘Are you sure you want to be doing this?’”

Nick adds.

Nick joined GreatLIFE in 2014 as the director of fitness and nutrition, but he quickly realized the job was much more than that. From day one, he was navigating construction

sites, floor plans, and a rapidly expanding organization. In less than two years, he went from managing no one to having 73 direct reports.

“It was everything at once,” he shares. “Construction management, leadership development, learning on the fly. But it was exciting.”

The vision wasn’t to mimic national chains. GreatLIFE was building something more community-rooted with its blend of fitness, golf, and accessible wellness. Its culture reflected that vision and still does.

“What we’re all about is how you build a relationship with somebody and keep it and make it deeper,” Nick adds.

Achieving that level of authenticity and commitment to people has to start internally.

“One of the coolest things about what we do at GreatLIFE is that none of the job descriptions are accurate,” Nick explains. “People step in and fill the needs.

Tom [Walsh] leads the way. You’ll literally see him walking through and cleaning a toilet if that’s what needs to be done, and that’s what we expect from the owner on down to the frontline workers.”

In May 2019, after the company president, Don Hill, took a call to ministry, Nick was promoted. Just a few months later, the world changed.

When the pandemic hit, gyms across the country shut down. Many never reopened. But GreatLIFE, with its signature golf offering and the blessing of a mild South Dakota spring, survived and actually grew stronger.

“We woke up every day trying to understand the newest mandate,” Nick says. “But our members stuck with us, and we didn’t have to let anyone go.”

It reinforced something he already believed: that Sioux Falls thrives not because of transactions, but because of relationships.

“People here step up,” he says. “They help in meaningful ways. It’s one of the reasons this community is special.”

When they first moved back to Sioux Falls, Nick and his wife were eager to rejoin that community, particularly their church, Celebrate. It was one of 10 n EMPIRE

the first places they went together in their early days of dating, where they got married, and Nick says they couldn’t find a church home in the Twin Cities that felt the same.

Almost immediately upon their return, the couple got involved again, with Nick teaching in the K-2 Sunday School classroom and also volunteering at his daughters’ school, Westside Christian.

“Kids have taught me more about leadership than anything else,” he explains. “They don’t worry about asking silly questions, and they remind you that words matter.”

He shares an anecdote about one of his daughters, who at age 3, asked him “why” he had told her he was proud of her, something he said every night before bed.

“I learned to be specific with both my praises and my criticisms. You don’t just say ‘Good job,’ you say, ‘I appreciate how well you listen,’” Nick explains.

Nick’s daughters, now 8 and 10, are also active in sports, which means plenty of evenings spent coaching, cheering, and coordinating schedules.

The Ovendens are also a foster-dog family, with two permanent pups and a rotating set of foster dogs through Dakota Dachshund Rescue.

Over the past few years, they’ve taken in nearly 20 dogs.

outside their comfort zones with activities like swimming and wakeboarding. They value travel experiences as well, from road-tripping to Yellowstone and Bear Lake in Utah, to trying their hand at karaoke as a family while on a cruise.

Mentorship is another of Nick’s greatest passions, partly because he knows how essential leaders and mentors, like Tom Walsh and Don Hill, have been in his own life.

Whether it’s professional or more personal mentorship, he encourages everyone to find a mentor and be a mentor.

“People often wait to find mentors until life gets hard,” Nick shares. “But you need them before that, people who pour into you and people you intentionally pour into.”

Nick has served on the Teammates board for six years and continues weekly mentoring sessions with the same student he met back when the boy was in fourth grade.

“He’s now a freshman, and he still gives me a bro hug every time,” Nick says.

He also advocates just as strongly for what he calls “reverse mentoring,” or younger generations helping older ones understand shifting values and perspectives. In fact, it’s the subject of an eight-week course he recently wrote on generational understanding, rooted in the principles of Sticking Points, a book by Haydn Shaw.

“Every generation thinks the next one is lazy or entitled,” Nicks adds. “But most of the time, it’s just different priorities. Mentorship bridges that gap.”

Nick sees tremendous momentum in the city today, a rising generation of leaders stepping forward, ready to build on the legacy of those who came before them.

“We’ve had incredible leaders pave a path for us,” he says.

“Our job is to take the baton and run with it.”

For Nick, that means leading GreatLIFE with clarity and humility, serving the community with his family by his side, and continuing to invest in deep relationships.

Foster Family: The Ovenden home has welcomed nearly 20 foster dogs through Dakota Dachshund Rescue. They have two permanent pups, a 7-year-old yellow lab and a 13-year-old cockapoo, but always leave room for one foster at a time.

Former “Never Augie” Guy: As a local, Nick once vowed he’d never attend Augustana until a campus visit with his older brother changed his mind.

First-Time Flag Football Coach: He recently started coaching his daughters’ flag football team, calling it “one of the most humbling experiences of my life,” and a totally different sport than he expected.

Stepping out of the comfort zone: Whether it’s wakeboarding, family karaoke on a Bahamas cruise (“Sweet Caroline”), or Spartan Races, Nick believes in doing the things that are a bit intimidating.

Dad’s homework: Nick completed both a master’s degree and a doctorate from Kairos University, mostly working from parking lots during his girls’ sports practices. He says his daughters loved that “Dad had homework, too.”

On the corner of 9th and Main in downtown Sioux Falls stands a historical relic founded in 1890 as the State Bank & Trust Company.

Renowned for its architectural significance, early use of modern building techniques, and its standout role in criminal history, this building tells the story of Sioux Falls during a period of rapid economic growth.

In the early 20th century, Sioux Falls was growing quickly and expanding even faster. With railroads connecting the city to the rest of the country and new businesses opening their doors, the opportunity for growth was astounding. As the State Bank & Trust Company continued to thrive, it became clear that the business was outgrowing its current space. Construction for their new space began in 1915, with the forward thinking of more modern and architectural maturity.

Finished in 1917, the structure had become something the city had never seen before. Now named the Security National Bank of Sioux Falls, this building stood as a turning point in how structures were designed, as it became the first steel-framed office building in South Dakota. Its steel frame signaled a more modern, urban 16 n EMPIRE

future in the buildings of Sioux Falls. For years, the Security Bank Building buzzed with daily life, tourists, and employees.

It quickly became a landmark and a familiar place in the ever-so-changing downtown neighborhood.

Eventually, in 1934, the bank gained national attention, this time for something different. On the morning of March 6th, members of the infamous Dillinger Gang stormed into the bank with malicious intent, not to leave empty-handed. The robbery quickly unfolded with no time to waste. Customers and employees were caught off guard as the gang took control of the banking floor, issuing orders at gunpoint and demanding cash. After thousands of dollars were stolen, the armed and dangerous gang members escaped, leaving behind a wounded police chief and several injured hostages. The stolen money was never recovered, and the story lives on as a part of criminal history in the city.

In the years following the robbery, Sioux Falls was on edge. The story lingered for what felt like an eternity, splashed across newspaper pages, headlines, and radio broadcasts. Conversations in coffee shops and living rooms were filled with storytelling. Thankfully, over time, the story fizzled out, and life returned to normal. The building at 9th and Main remained, not as a symbol of fear, but as a quiet reminder of the city’s resilience and its ability to move forward beyond the events that once shook it.

The Security Bank building continued to serve Sioux Falls in more ways than one, constantly evolving to meet the needs of the city. Additions were made, businesses constantly moved in and out, and the surrounding skyline grew taller. In 1984, the building’s significance was formally honored and added to the National Register of Historic Places, an induction that honored its architectural impact and preserved its story as part of Sioux Falls’ lasting history.

Today, the Security Bank building still buzzes with the growing city. Its historic exterior symbolizes the past and the present, whereas the interior blends modernity and functionality. Residents, office workers, and visitors now occupy the space that once held one of the city’s most infamous events. More than a structure of steel, the building represents Sioux Falls as a whole. It stands as a reminder that history isn’t just found in books or museums; it can be found on the corner of 9th and Main.

The inventory process doesn’t have to be just for businesses. The closet refresh is something I adapted many Januaries ago to start the new year with a fresh, organized, decluttered, and concise closet space. Taking inventory of your closet, deciding what you no longer need, donating, and rearranging, all can be done with our own belongings, and now is the perfect time to do so.

I try to channel my inner-Claire from the movie Clueless and have my outfits and items I’m wearing in the current season accessible whenever I’m ready to wear them. Because I won’t be needing sandals, shorts, and swimwear, I’ve put those pieces up high, tucked them away, or moved them to the back. I like to put my summer shoes up high, shorts packed away, and dresses in a spare closet. Have the items that you’re wearing now at the front, center, eye-level, or within arm’s length of your space.

A great closet rule to adopt is the one-year rule. If you haven’t worn these items in the last year, it’s time to donate or commit to wearing them in the upcoming season. I know we like to think that we’ll wear them, but unless it’s an item with sentimental value, high dollar value, or something we have planned to wear for a specific event, if you’re not putting it on, there’s a reason

“Approach the new year with resolve to find the opportunities hidden in each new day” behind that. Maybe you’re not comfortable in it, it no longer fits, or is a style you no longer like. Donating or selling items is a great way to make room for pieces that you want to add to your wardrobe. If you’re looking to make this closet refresh profitable, we have local options as well as selling apps to sell your items that are very effective.

Organization goes far when it comes to your closet, and there are a lot of methods and techniques you can try. I personally love to organize my tops by sleeve length: tank tops to sweaters, jackets, and blazers together, etc. Some people like doing that, but adding in organizing by color. I found that I like hanging my bottoms rather than having them folded because they have fewer wrinkles and are more visually organized for me. You can add in a hanger style you like, or you could grab some S-hooks and hang your bottoms by the belt loops.

My favorite organizing tool for my closet are these plastic shoe organizers. They are adjustable and can fit a variety of shoes, cutting the space needed for a pair of shoes in half. I have these all over our house now, and everyone’s shoes are organized with these.

Recognizing When It’s Time It can be difficult to know when a loved one may need additional support. Often, the first clues appear in the small, everyday routines at home: a missed dose of medication, unopened mail, or wearing the same outfit multiple days in a row. While each change alone may seem minor, together they can signal that it is time to consider assisted living.

Understanding the signs can help families make confident, compassionate decisions about the right level of care.

Isolation and Social Connection A noticeable shift toward isolation is often one of the earliest and most significant indicators. If your loved one is spending more time alone, limiting conversations, or seeing fewer friends and neighbors, they may be experiencing loneliness or depression. Assisted living communities can provide meaningful social connection through shared meals, daily activities, and a sense of belonging.

Changes in Daily Tasks Daily habits provide valuable insight. Structured routines and supportive care can help address these concerns.

Growing Clutter or Household Strain Environmental signs can reveal when daily responsibilities have become overwhelming. Increasing clutter, unpaid bills, utility shut-offs, or pets and plants going uncared for may indicate it is becoming difficult to manage a home independently.

When these issues appear alongside safety or cognitive concerns, they often point to a need for more consistent support.

In 2026, it may be time to consider some new options in your investment plan: alternative investments.

Alternative investments are a broad category of investments outside of the traditional stock and bond markets. The average investor has a mix of equity, or stocks, as well as fixed income, or bonds, within their investment portfolio.

There are seemingly endless possibilities of company stocks and government or corporate bonds to invest in. There are also alternative options outside of these traditional investments that may provide diversity within investment accounts. These alternatives include, but are not limited to, real estate, private assets, cryptocurrencies, and commodities such as gold and silver. Not all alternative investments are a fit for many portfolios nor are they available to all investors. As your investment portfolio grows though, it is important to learn more about alternative investments to determine if they are an option for you.

These alternative investments often come with increased risk, so it is important to understand the ramifications and risks before placing your money into alternative investments.

Additionally, many of these alternative investments are not available to all investors. Meeting with a financial advisor is a great place to start to see whether they are available to you.

Real Estate Real estate properties can generate income through rent as well as possible appreciation over time. While real estate rental income can be characterized as passive income, the reality is that often owning real estate requires you to be the landlord and deal with the day-to-day realities of having renters. For some investors, there are other ways to invest in real estate outside of physically holding the property.

These options include private placements and real estate investment trusts, also known as REITs. Real estate may only be appropriate for some investors, depending on their circumstances.

PRIVATE ASSETS Private assets have continued to gain more attention in the public sphere. Certain plan structures are beginning to explore limited exposure to private assets, which may increase access for more investors. At the same time, these funds can lead to increased fees and higher risk. As private assets gain more publicity, it becomes increasingly crucial to be educated. While private assets may allow for diversification within a portfolio, they are not always the best route. Portfolio makeup, especially when it comes to private assets, must be tailored to an individual’s unique situation.

Cryptocurrency In recent years, Bitcoin has experienced periods of significant volatility, with changes in gains and losses.

Cryptocurrency continues to remain speculative. While returns over the past years have excited many investors, there are still many unknowns regarding how this asset may perform in the future. With speculative investments, it is unwise to create a long-term plan based on their returns.

While returns can be monumental, so can losses.

Commodities There are many different commodities that one can invest in. Trading forwards and futures is often done in the agriculture world when farmers understand the underlying assets. For many investors, commodities, such as gold and silver, are found within a portfolio. Gold and silver can both be purchased directly or through an exchangetraded fund that tracks the underlying investment. People try to accomplish different goals, including a buy-andhold inflation hedge, a short-term investment for gains, or sources of diversification through gold or silver. These commodity strategies, however, are not always effective nor beneficial.

Many people associate “palliative care” with hospice and end-of-life services. However, Amy Anderson, a physician assistant at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, clarifies the distinction.

“Hospice is just one piece of palliative care,” Amy explains.

“Palliative care is the big umbrella. It’s about improving quality of life, not just managing the end of it.”

Amy is part of a dedicated team that includes providers, a social worker, a chaplain, and a nurse. Together, they support Veterans facing serious, non-curable illnesses like COPD, heart disease, cancer, and Parkinson’s. Their mission is to help Veterans live better, even as their conditions progress.

“We don’t anticipate curing diseases,” Amy says. “But we can help manage symptoms, support families, and prepare everyone for what’s ahead.”

That support extends beyond the Veteran. It also includes their loved ones. Families often face emotional, logistical, and spiritual challenges as they care for someone with a progressive illness. The palliative care team steps in to ease 32 n EMPIRE

that burden. Social workers assist with end-of-life planning, benefits navigation, and caregiver support. Chaplains offer spiritual guidance and emotional comfort. Nurses and providers help families understand disease progression and what to expect.

“Families are dynamic,” Amy adds. “Sometimes it’s about improving communication. Sometimes it’s about helping a caregiver who’s overwhelmed. We’re here for all of it.”

In some cases, the team helps families prepare for difficult transitions, such as hospice care. But even then, the focus remains on comfort and dignity. “It’s not about giving up,” Amy explains. “It’s about living well, even with serious illness.”

One of the most surprising facts? Veterans can “graduate” from hospice care. “We’ve had patients who came into hospice very frail, but with the right support, nutrition, nursing care, and emotional encouragement, they improved,” Amy shares. “They gained weight, got stronger, and no longer met hospice criteria.”

“I’ve followed some patients for years,” Amy says. “They’re not ready for hospice, but they still need help. And that’s what we do.

We help them live better, longer.”

For veterans and their families, understanding the full scope of palliative care can make all the difference. It’s not just medical, it’s emotional, spiritual, and it’s available long before the final stages of illness.

Emily Groth was only 21 when she lost her life to fentanyl poisoning. Since then, Emily’s mom has made it her mission to prevent as many families as possible from experiencing a similar tragedy. Emily’s Hope was founded as an organization dedicated to treatment and prevention education. “Even if just one life is saved, it’s all worth it,” says Angela Kennecke, President/CEO, and Emily’s mom.

The battle against addiction is an enormous challenge, with over 78,309 lives lost to overdoses last year.

That’s an average of 215 deaths daily. You can help support individuals and families to win the battle by celebrating the power of art and community at this year’s Emily’s Hope Gala Art Show and Auction on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the Canopy by Hilton Sioux Falls Downtown. This annual event celebrates the life and creative spirit of Emily, who was a prolific painter and art student before her life was cut short. “Every year we display her work through the art show and then auction artwork by talented local and national artists to support the mission of Emily’s Hope,” states Angela.

This year’s theme, Beauty from Ashes, is inspired by Emily’s painting titled Incongruous. “She left me with 29 paintings and several pieces of pottery,” Angela shares. “The Gala gives us a chance to showcase her work. ‘Incongruous’ is what she named this 36 n EMPIRE

award-winning piece. I didn’t always appreciate that painting as much as I do today. Now it has more meaning to me than it ever has.”

Angela describes how the image of a rose emerging from a skull reflects the contrast between life and death, and beauty rising from tragedy. “The idea comes from scripture, Isaiah 61:3, which talks about mourning and loss, but the promise in the midst of devastation is that joy, hope, and beauty could emerge from that.

And while that’s all in scripture, the meaning is universal. Ashes can represent brokenness, and the transformation is meaning, growth, and resilience.”

Featured well-known artists this year include donations from Josh Spies, Jim Sturdevant, and Paul Schiller. “We also have an artist who is in recovery who does custom-made Nikes who’s donating a pair for Emily’s Hope. Many of the artists come to this event, and that is really cool and wonderful to be where their work is recognized,” Angela notes.

The gala also features tempting auction packages from local businesses, great live music, a delectable dinner, and an inspiring program. The silent auction features approximately 80 pieces of art and another seven or eight during the live auction.

This year’s emcees are local TV hosts Ashley Thompson and Mitchell Olson from KELOLAND. “The fun thing is that Ashley is also quite artistic and worked with pastels to create some art herself for the auction,” Angela shares.

The evening is capped by the presentation of the Emily’s Hope Hero Award. “This is awarded to somebody who’s gone above and beyond to help our organization and service the people we help. We couldn’t do any of this without our sponsors, business partners, community members, and volunteers throughout the year,” Angela says.

Proceeds from the gala fund the work Emily’s Hope does year-round, such as K-12 curriculum in schools, youth prevention activities, state-wide naloxone distribution, the post-overdose response team, and treatment scholarships.

“We’ve given $510,000 to 260 people to go through the Avera Addiction Care Center to get the help they need.

We also give art scholarships to seniors in high school who plan to study art in college, and we hold an art competition as part of our youth coalition, where all students in Sioux Falls are eligible to participate, with a theme of prevention.”

Emily’s artwork is showcased throughout the year in all program materials. “The majority of our efforts center around art because my daughter was such a prolific artist, and we love to celebrate the art of others that is sent our way.”

Bridget and her business partner, Dr. John Stollberg, OTD, OTR/L, CHT, launched their partnership in November 2020. John, who knew Bridget through her entrepreneurial success in Siouxland, recognized their complementary services and approached her about collaboration.

Bridget’s entrepreneurial ventures include Tri-State Nursing, a temporary supplemental staffing agency that connects nurses with hospitals facing shortages, and a home care service operating 24/7 to provide everything from companionship and daily living assistance to skilled nursing care, including infusions and medication management.

“I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, and it was sink or swim, and I wasn’t about to drown,” Bridget notes about her business acumen.

Over five years, their partnership has assembled talented clinicians offering specialized services. In October 2025, they purchased the former Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers, expanding into what is now Dynamic Physical Therapy.

“We wanted to give more options to the Siouxland community,” John notes. The acquisition brought specialized pelvic and vestibular therapy capabilities that complement their existing services.

Dynamic Physical Therapy facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for assessing and treating patients with physical, occupational, balance, and vestibular deficits and pelvic health disorders.

Dynamic Physical Therapy extends beyond standard outpatient therapy. Our Sioux City and Sioux Falls clinics specialize in workers’ compensation cases, focusing on rehabilitating “industrial athletes” to return to their workplaces. They partner with companies throughout the employment lifecycle, from hiring through retirement.

“We want to provide solutions rather than just fix a single problem,” Bridget emphasizes.

The staff’s specialized training and certifications distinguish Dynamic Physical Therapy. Dr. Stollberg specializes in industrial rehabilitation, workers’ compensation, and ergonomics.
