PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It’s hard to believe at one point in time bathrooms were considered to be a luxury and therefore many homes weren’t equiped with a bathroom. This meant that homeowners had to make use of an outdoor toliet and wash in front of a fireplace. Thanks to the Industrial Revolution, steps were taken to mechanize the bathrooms.

ELEVATED EXCELLENCE NRG Homes

Today’s bathrooms are all about combining stylish looks with functionality. The bathroom is a place to get ready on those busy weekday mornings, but it’s also a space where you can relax and unwind too. Today’s bathrooms create spaces of luxury and comfort that incorporate technology such as in-floor heat, steam-free mirrors, televisions, clever lighting schemes and digital showers.

TOPPING THE REST Top Construction

Bathrooms play a pivotal role in homes today and are commonly one of the most used rooms in households. This is why it’s important you invest the time needed to design the bathroom that works for you and your household.

Sophistication is a growing trend in custom homes for 2024.

Homeowners in the Siouxland area increasingly desire homes that blend energy-efficiency, luxury and chic, modern style.

dramatic dark and light neutral tones.

That combination is what homeowners will find at NRG Homes, which specializes in building distinctive and sought-after luxury executive homes. Shannon and Tonya Grismer, owners of NRG Homes, combine

“We’ve got black metal and glass barn doors and black metal shelving units in the kitchen, so we’re mixing industrial with more modern, luxurious finishes,” Tonya said.

their expertise in construction and design to build homes specifically tailored to their customers’ needs and lifestyles.

Those all mix and match seamlessly with accent features and finishes including wood beams, painted shiplap, tile and wallpaper.

Melding contemporary, traditional and hints of industrial style is the design combination Tonya said she strives for when creating custom homes for NRG’s clients. The result is modern, yet the design has longevity.

The spacious atmosphere is further enhanced by a 24-foot vaulted ceiling in the great room, with 10-foot ceilings and 8-foot interior doors throughout the house.

A recent NRG Homes build in south-central Sioux Falls beautifully showcases the current contemporary-traditional-industrial design inside and out. The home’s dark exterior is complemented by lighter-colored stone and wood siding. Inside the five-bedroom home,

“That’s a standard for us. We do that in every one of our houses. It makes the house a lot grander,” Shannon said. This 4000-square-foot home was built for a large family, so two large islands combine kitchen prep space and seating for seven. The dining

room, too, can easily seat seven or more, allowing ample room for dinners and celebrations. The home’s mudroom has abundant, well-organized storage to meet this busy family’s needs. Because their home is where the owners both live and work, Shannon and Tonya designed an office where both can work comfortably with all the amenities they need. Large windows fill the home with natural light, framing the view of the backyard and pool that family and friends will enjoy in warmer weather. “You can see the pool from the dining room, kitchen and great room. One cool feature we included on the exterior is we did AstroTurf next to the pool to keep it cleaner with kids playing there or pets. It’s just a neat feature,” Shannon said.

energy-efficient Structurally Insulated Panel, or SIP, construction. The panels are made from wood or plywood with core foam insulation in the middle. SIP panels combine building science and high performance to reduce noise, air movement, drafts, dust and allergens in houses. “It’s what our company specializes in,” Shannon said. “We show our customers the importance and benefits of using of SIP panels. SIP panels used to be more expensive than stick building, so we have to show our customers their return on investment. Now with lumber costs the way they are, SIP panels are far more cost effective, which is awesome.” As the company’s website states: “NRG = Energy. Energy efficiency is the key to building a great home.” The average savings for a new home built with SIPs typically ranges between $600 and $1,500 every year.

Meanwhile, even on the coldest winter days and nights, the house and garage remain comfortably warm because they are equipped with radiant heat flooring, Shannon said.

“SIP construction homes are more energy efficient, stronger and quieter,” Shannon said.

“Radiant heat is more energy efficient. That’s standard for us in every

“Our company is us. I’m on site multiple times a day. Our customers aren’t dealing with an employee; they’re dealing with the owners. We

do everything we can for our customers,” Shannon said. “We feel the customer gets the best product at the end with a hands-on approach with each and every home,” he said. “Each one of these homes takes a lot of time and commitment. I want to be the one out there on site. It’s our company and our name and when people have a question, I want them to ask myself or my wife.” Shannon has more than two decades of experience and a genuine passion for the construction industry. His background is in building single family homes, twin homes and villas. Tonya offers clients her impeccable design prowess, selecting flooring, cabinetry, lighting and more. Both pride themselves on giving their customers personalized service and excellent communication throughout the entire home-building process. “I’ve always loved the building process,” Shannon said. “Tonya has a keen eye for design. … Our customers rave about her.” The husband-and-wife team works closely with customers from initial concept to completed home so the entire home-building process is as smooth and enjoyable as possible for the homeowner. Each house begins with the customer’s vision and choices of layout, square footage, color scheme, amenities, flooring, cabinetry, appliances and more. NRG Homes transforms those into a 3D design so customers can clearly envision their future house. “People can go online and read testimonials from customers. They speak for themselves,” Shannon said. For anyone who’s contemplating a custom home, it’s never too early to meet with a builder and start planning, Shannon said, even if building is two or three years away. Shannon said NRG Homes still has a few lots available in sought-after Sioux Falls neighborhoods — walk-out lakeside lots in Cherry Lake West Reserve, walk-out lots in The Grand Prairie, and a walk-out lot at the end of a cul-de-sac in Mystic Creek. A soaring fireplace from Hebron Brick guides your eyes to the center of the room. 12 to 14 feet of Cambria quartz and wood trim pieces beautifully frame the heart of the home. But while your eye is drawn to this room, it may not notice the hidden door. A secret couples getaway awaits you tucked behind the wooden slats of the fireplace. Don’t see it on first glance? That’s the point. “That’s the only way to access the master suite. It’s a pretty cool feature. They wanted those wooden accents on the fireplace and after incorporating them on either side, we thought why not make another part of the house that someone doesn’t know is there if you don’t want it to be known.” As you step through the secret door, you step into comfort with the white, plush carpet. White and gold accents continue the luxurious feel in this oasis with a white ceiling fan, gold end table lights and a wallpaper accent wall. The view takes your breath away as you overlook Cherry Lake – a 3.2-mile manmade lake with a front row view from your window. Need a closer look? Step out onto the porch from your bedroom and take in the view of your backyard which includes your own pool. Stepping back inside the master suite, black ceramic tile floor guides you to relaxation in your master bath. Connected to one wall is the huge and incredible glass enclosed standing shower. Two black showerheads cascade warm water down your tired shoulders and beautifully contrasts the bright white color of the bathroom walls. One side of half glass, half wall separates the shower from the soaker tub. Encompassing either side of the shower are separate his and her vanities. If the cold weather has you down, this home from Impact Construction is sure to heat up your soul with its warm natural tones and light. Located at 1209 S. Foss Ave. in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, this 1,553 square foot villa style home invites you right in. With its unique stone accents from Midwest Stone leading up to the front door and LP smartside siding and trim, your eye is drawn to the front of this house. As soon as you step inside, the grand space is flooded with natural and artificial light all the way up to the 9-foot ceilings. As you step a bit further in, you’ll notice the vaulted ceiling, giving you some extra height. The electric fireplace from Impact Construction is the perfect thing to warm up your cold hands and feet as you cozy up on the inviting couch with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. The vinyl plank flooring from Thorton Flooring effortlessly guides you to the kitchen and dining room area. This is set to be the perfect gathering area with ample seating at the dining room table and kitchen island. “We really tried to keep this whole area very open,” says Tony Lahman, Owner of Impact Construction. “It was important that we create this warm and inviting vibe throughout the house, but especially in the kitchen.” Those warm inviting tones are found throughout the kitchen from the light wood toned flooring and kitchen island to the white wwww.FindHomeIdeas.com n 37

windows and laminate white countertops with a black vein from Formatop. Beautifully complementing that are black stainless-steel appliances from Mahlander’s Appliance and Lighting and light grey birch cabinets from Rosebud Wood Products. “It just turned out so nice with all the light colors. We did the painted cabinets and then the wood toned island. You know, at first, we weren’t sure how that would work together and complement one another. But after it was all together, it really turned out beautiful.” White ceramic tile backsplash with a grey grout line and black accents on handles and hinges are the final bow on this area. “Another cool feature of this space is the walk-in pantry. It has so much space for all the ingredients you could need but it also has a plug in the pantry. You could put your toaster or anything else in there and that helps to keep your counter space nice and clean if you want. It keeps that area looking really sleek.” As we exit the kitchen, we make our way down the hallway. To your right you’ll find the laundry room, coat closet and access to the three-stall garage. Two of the three bedrooms in this home can be found at the end of the hall. As we make our way to the left, we are guided to the plush beige carpet of the master suite. Here with the perfect view of your beautiful backyard, you’ll find relaxation. Starting in the bedroom, the recess lighting and windows create the most inviting space. Above you, a ceiling fan to cool you down after a long day. The master closet features plenty of room for any item. Wanting your own space in your master bath? No problem. The double vanity offers just that. Here you’ll find that beautiful light wood tones again on the cabinets and onyx white countertops that are complemented by the black accents on the mirror, faucet and handles. 38 n January 2024

The walk-in fiberglass shower with a concave accent piece calls to your stressed shoulders. Here you’ll find your perfect little getaway of comfort. Want more of that beautiful backyard view? Let’s make our way back to the dining room and slide through the backdoor. Here is another perfect oasis spot: a back covered patio perfect for any gathering. “This has to be one of my favorites about the home,” says Tony. “We did recess lighting in the ceiling and there’s a plug on the side for a smoker, grill or whatever you are cooking. It’s just so peaceful back there and has so much backyard space. It might be a skinnier lot, but it goes back pretty far.” No matter where you are in this home, you’re sure to find your favorite spot in no time. With its open, fresh and welcoming vibes, it’s the perfect place for anyone.
