About me

Hi! My name is Michelle Carissa Haryono. I’m an enthusiastic and passionate design student, currently sitting in my last year of Interior Architecture at Swinburne University. Experienced in design-thinking, design development, material selection, and generating 2D & 3D models through various software, mainly Revit, Rhino, and Enscape.

Growing up, always liked to observe people and my surroundings, how people talk, behave, and interact with one another. It fascinates me how everyone is different, yet they always find a way to connect physically and psychologically with their environment.

This motivates me to design a space that offers the same mutual connection to the people who touch it. It pushes my design to be people-centered, focusing on the experience of human emotions through the choice of materials, colors, and mindful design decisions.

Ensuring a smooth transition to motherhood through visual therapy and emotional-centered design

“A Healing Nest is a well-being center for mothers who just gave birth, helping them transition into motherhood gracefully. Its design is focused on a transformative and emotional-centered approach, creating a spatial journey for each emotional stage and providing compassionate care and community support.

The design is based on the emotional journey that mother had to undergo after their birth experience. The journey consists of 5 main emotional stages which will be translated into 5 different spaces starting from the stage of adapt, rest, pause, heal, and bloom.

Warm and neutral materials are incorporated as the main color palette and design style to evoke a calming and serene atmosphere for the inhabitants.”

The spatial planning of this place is driven by the emotional journey of the mother itself. Starting from the most vulnerable phase when they just entered motherhood, to the most empowered and courageous stage when they are ready to embrace their new role, this space made a full circular journey indicated by the interconnection of each building.

By implementing an organic, curved, and circular design, this building empowers a soft and free-flowing journey for the mothers to embrace their emotions during their stay in this center.

The Literacy Museum

Words, heritage, legacy and everything in between;

Embracing the power of literacy and its rich history through sustainable and passive solar energy design

“Inspired by the rich history of BOYD Community Hub and the surrounding site, this museum is meant to showcase the beauty and story of literacy.

It is a project that explores passive heating and cooling strategies through facade design and various energy elements. Highlighting the use of the space, a series of open books being stacked together are used as a facade strategy to respond to the sun diagram and the needs of the building.

With this expressive and complex facade, the shape of the building remains quiet and simple to let the facade take the spotlight. The modular form of the building encourages people to explore the space thoroughly while enjoying the beauty of the natural features that are being incorporated throughout the space.”

The North facade design consists of a series of angled open books being placed on a horizontal pole that holds them together. In this series, 4 types of angles are placed one after the other (35º, 25º, 20º, and 5º). This strategy is used to block a striking summer sun at 12 PM at 62 degrees while allowing winter sun to come through at 12 PM at 32 degrees.

BOYD

a reconciliation space where mindfulness, peace, and assurance can be felt by the employees and clients through the implementation of the WELL building concept

“Shinwa Law Firm is a renovation project of an existing building in Hawthorn. This renovation requires some public, semi-public, and private space for the employees. It is re-designed with heavy consideration of WELL Building standards that are being widely implemented in workplaces around the world.

The aim of this project is to create a law firm that functions more than just a working space but also a reconciliation space where mindfulness, peace, and assurance can be felt by the employees and clients.

To achieve this, an open and enclosed space division strategy is implemented to enhance the function of each space on each level. This library is located on the mezzanine level, away from the workplace and other public areas, with a large window that can overlook the overall office and central garden below it.”
