PLAYING WITH LIGHT

The general concept was to create a set of columns with the constant of having various elements that play with light and color. The first one has a magical aesthetic and it is inspired by scepters of wizards and other enchanted creatures. For the light I created a procedural material with radial characteristics and for the main body I used a noise effect and increased the lacunarity to create a strong contrast between the two colors.

For the second column the natural shape of stalagtits and stalagmitis was the main inspiration. The general figure was created moving vertices with soft selection and flaring the final result. The light was created applying a brush stroke to a Bezier curve that was positioned on the structure activating the ‘live object’ option. The procedural material created for this column uses the mountain uv structure and applies a 3d bump to recall a natural and rocky material.

The third column is inspired to classical architecture and in particular the doric greek columns. The lights are beveled platonic polygons and they are a reference to Plato to create an even stronger connection to the classical world.

The material wants to imitate the stone with which these columns were created and the lights have a high metallic value to imitate a gold material.

The fourth column is inspired by baroc architecture and specifically is a direct homage to the Reggia di Venaria in Italy. The floral pattern was made taking into consideration a proper topology and then repeated thanks to Duplicate Special. The procedural material was created playing with the marble uv texture and its values.

The fifth column skips a few centuries and takes inspiration from modern architecture and specifically skyscrapers.

The heavy focus of this column on the extrusion of the windows permits to see the internal cylindrical orange light.

The material is metallic and the curvature nonlinear deformation tool gives another layer of decoration to the structure.

After various columns inspired by human art, the last and final column is inspired by organic and natural forms. The main body resambles a climbing plant and the lights are shaped like flowers. The procedural material used for the column is a mix of uv texture and a subsurface modifier.

The Light setting is achieved using a double light. One internal neutral light from above with reduced intensity and exposure and one from outside the frame with warm tones (5000 K) to reseamble the morning or sunset.

The carpet and the floor use both a procedural material. The carpet has Arnold Noise connected to the Normal Vector of the color and the floor has a double connection to the base color: both a Fractal and a Cell Noise.
