What

is your design philosophy?

My design firm is dedicated to creating spaces that celebrate a fresh continental mix of classic elements with modernity. I believe in what I call “design democracy,” where everyone involved has a voice, especially the client. After all, we’re creating a home that should both suit and reflect the client while striking that perfect balance between timeless elegance and contemporary style.

You work with a lot of bold colors. What inspired this approach in your designs?

I love studying ancient history, and when looking back at the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks, and Babylonians, it’s interesting to see that the wealthy class in those times wore a lot of color, and their homes were very colorful. The dyes used to create bold hues, such as emerald greens, ruby reds, sapphire blues, and amethyst purples, were expensive. Those who could afford them had more vibrant furnishings and clothing, which gave them a certain confidence in expressing who they were and allowed them to make their environments more bespoke and personalized. So, for me, using bold colors is about celebrating abundance, confidence, and the joy of living fully.

Are there any color palettes or design styles you’re seeing more frequently in today’s interiors?

Jewel-toned colors are really taking off in the marketplace. Brilliant blues, greens, reds, and yellows are much more

prevalent now and easier to come by in the design marketplace, which wasn’t the case just a few years ago. I think that’s going to continue to be a trend going forward – this warm embrace of jewel tones. Also, a color that’s making a comeback from the 1980s is mauve; I’m seeing it everywhere.

As far as design styles go, Art Deco is definitely hot right now. Gustavian influences and Maximalism are also trending. Traditional elements such as crystal chandeliers and gilt-frame mirrors are becoming popular again. There’s been a leaning toward the modern end of the spectrum for a very long time, and I think we’re due for the pendulum to swing back toward the classic, Maximalist end.

What are some emerging design trends currently gaining momentum?

One of the biggest trends right now is the desire for bespoke, curated interiors. For about 20 years, people were purchasing the same gray and white sofas from the same manufacturers, and after a while, all the homes started to look very much alike. In recent years, though, we’ve seen people break free from that homogenous interior and go for more individualized, stylish, elegant spaces that truly reflect who they are. I’m happy about this return to individualism and tailored interiors that feel personal and unique.

Mixing patterns is also popular right now, and your designs often showcase a brilliant interplay of prints and textures. What’s your rule of thumb when mixing them?

It’s important to consider scale when you’re working with different patterns. You don’t want all your patterns to be the same size. For example, if you have a large-scale pattern, like a large damask print, you’ll want to mix it with smaller prints like leopard, check, or houndstooth. Diversify the scale of geometrics, stripes, and plaids, too, so they layer together seamlessly and don’t compete. Also, you have to know when to stop when it comes to mixing patterns and textures. I liken it to making a delicious casserole - you know you need seasoning, but you can only put so much seasoning into the casserole before you ruin it, so you have to know when to pull back a little bit.

What advice would you give to homeowners who want to update their interiors but aren’t sure how to incorporate modern trends?

Start small. Simple updates like new rugs, throw pillows, accent pieces, accessories, or artwork can make a big impact without a big investment. These elements allow you to introduce modern touches while keeping the space comfortable and personal. As your confidence grows, you can start experimenting more. For example, in the kitchen, something as simple as swapping out cabinet hardware or adding a stylish new faucet can really make a space feel fresh and more modern.

Your first coffee table book, Design Remix: A New Spin on Traditional Rooms, was released in 2021 and is now in its sixth reprint. Tell us about your new book, which will be released later this year.

This book is very different in that it’s a much bigger book in size and content and features 10 projects ranging from the mountains of Carmel, California, to coastal Maryland. We have a lot of waterfront projects and really fun outdoor spaces that I think people are going to love. The book also covers a range of styles from clean, modern, understated interiors to super maximalist traditional interiors. There are neutral rooms with touches of copper and bronze for warmth and interiors with every jewel-toned color you can possibly imagine, so it’s a very diverse coffee table book that celebrates the joy of design in a very beautiful way.
