What is a POP

By William R. Taft A “POP” is a Past Oildorado President. There is a long list of Past Oildorado President’s. Every 5 years the Oildorado President is the most respected person in Kern County. As of this Friday there is only 55 days until Oildorado. The 2015 Oildorado President is Paul Linder.

Here is a list of POPS and what their Oildorado Celbration was known for- 1946 Walter Keene- First Oildorado President- Post World War 2 Celebration and 6 mile long Grand Parade. 1960 Clarence Williams- Center Street was painted gold between 4th and 6th Street and a Quick Draw Contest on Center Street, 1965 Clarence Williams- 1st Well-Pulling Competition and a special Train made the round trip from Bakersfield to Taft, 1970 Glenn Black Sr.Ground Breaking of Buena Vista Lake, 1975 Jerry Free- World’s Longest Sandwich and a 10K run from the Lakeview Gusher to Taft.

1980 Vic Borrecco- World Backhoe and Welding Championships were on National TV and the new Taft College Athletic Center was Dedicated, 1985 Jerry Peaveyhouse- Veteran’s Memorial Dedication at Civic Center Park and Classic Car Show, 1990 Dennis Fauke- Dancing Waters was shown at the Fox Theatre and the Post Office had a special Hand Stamped Oildorado Collectable Issue, 1995 Randy Miller- Huell Howser attended several events, Ceremony at the former entrance of Gardner Field Air Base and Kristy Thompson was the Oildorado Queen, 2000 Jim Swearengin- After the 2000 Oildorado it was judged as the best ever- It had F-18 Fighters and B-25 World War 2 Bombers, Minor League Football Game, Motorcycle Races in a Softball Field, ArmWrestling Championships, last year of the Rodeo, “Boomtown” at the Fox Theatre, and The Fort hosted several events, 2005 Glenn Black Jr.- Demolition Derby at the Petroleum Club, Motorcycle races at Franklin Field, huge Halftime Shoot Out during the Wildcats Football Game, 2010 Eric Cooper- Was the biggest and best Oildorado yet- Music played almost non-stop along Rails to Trails, Eddie Money rocked the Street Concert, Bigfoot crushed cars during the Car Show, Taft’s Domino’s sold the most pizzas in 24 hours, and the beautiful Pioneer Mercantile Building was the Oildorado Store and Headquarters.

The late Mary Dillard and Pete Gianopulos worked hard on several Oildorado’s. Dennis McCall has worked hard behind the scenes on several Oildorado’s and is still working hard in 2015. Several others are working hard under President Paul Linder to make this Oildorado great. There is no “I” in Team and once again there is a great team making Oildorado 2015 happen. Contact the Oildorado Board if you would like to Volunteer. Oildorado is October 9th-18th. The unofficial start is October 8th with Old Timers Registration at the West Kern Oil Museum and the Taft College Ribeye Cookout in their Quad.

Deadline Nears for Unsecured Property Tax Bills Kern County Treasurer and Tax Collector, Jordan Kaufman announces that the deadline for payment of unsecured property taxes is August 31, 2015. Unsecured (personal) property tax bills are for items such as business equipment, farm equipment, aircraft, boats, and similar assets that are not attached to real estate.

Unsecured tax bills were mailed on July 21, 2015, to all unsecured property owners whose addresses are known to the County Assessor-Recorder and who had ownership of the personal property as of January 1, 2015.

Oildorado plans another store work party Taft Oildorado Days planners are issuing another call for volunteers to work on the store/headquarters building.

The workday will be on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at the former Taft Chevrolet building at Fifth and North streets.

Oildorado Pres. Paul Linder said much work remains in order to get the building ready for its planned Oct. 1 grand opening. The celebration will run from Oct. 9-18.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” he said. “We’ll be working on a number of things on Saturday. There’s still a lot of painting that needs to be done.”

Volunteers also will be working in the shop area.

“We’ll need to use that space as well,” Linder said. “There’s a lot of room back there and we intend to make good use of it.”

Eric Cooper, who helmed the 2010 celebration, echoed Linder’s appeal for volunteers.

“We will be back at the Oildorado Store for a second time this Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon,” he said. “We accomplished a great deal last time and really appreciate all of the hard work from everyone who attended the first work day. This Saturday, we will continue to clean, paint, patch, build and move things into place.”

Cooper also encouraged people who would like to work in the store to attend Saturday’s workday.

“We’d like to have all potential store volunteers attend Saturday,” he said. “We’ll deal more with specifics. Sherry Coulter is coordinating the schedule for store workers. If you have not given your name or know someone that would like to work, please call her at 623-7106.”

At the last event the store took on a life of its own. Under Cooper’s direction volunteers created a place that underscored the spirit of Oildorado. He hopes to duplicate that success although the venue is changing from the Pioneer Mercantile building to the facility that housed Taft Chevrolet’s showroom, parts department, repair center and offices.

This will be the second workday but not the last.

Volunteers of any age and talent are invited. Refreshments will be provided.

was hard work, tight budgets, lots of love, and perseverance that got us through. We are enjoying retired life and are ticking off our bucket list.

Hi Everyone,

I want to give a shout out to all of you that have said nice things about my columns over the years. I kinda never know when I sit down at the computer what will come up, it just flows sometimes, and sometimes it is a struggle. I do this every two weeks as I don’t believe I can be a weekly columnist. Trying to come up with stuff you want to read is hard enough for an untrained writer, remember I had to take bonehead English over in college; that is far as I got. Again thanks for your support.

I want to take a liberty here to say that this is anniversary week for Ginny and I, 41 years to be exact, when she walked down the isle with me to a very unknown future.

We had met two and half years earlier at a dancing 18/21 saloon in Pasadena, CA. She was there with friends and I with a buddy and neither she nor I wanted to be there. But during a break, the dance floor of people parted and there she was, standing there in my way. What was I to do but ask the preverbal pickup line “hey, do you wanna dance ??” She said yes and then yes again that November of 73, and there you go and here we are.

Our first date; Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen (Hot Rod Lincoln) and Linda Ronstadt was the second act, at the Fox Theater in Long Beach, CA. When we got married, we went on a weeklong honeymoon, and when we got back to LA, I had no job, had some debt to clear up, and immediately stepped on a piece of embedded pottery in the grass in front of our apartment and was on crutches for the first month of our marriage. Her mother liked me though, she saw something. It took her dad awhile. I got a job, re-started and rec’d my degree at CAL State LA, and we wound up in Taft five years later. Got all the debt paid off, student loans too, and we would never live anywhere else. We have been so blessed with great family members on both sides, wonderful friends, and two of the best kids ever, and you can’t have them, we wouldn’t trade’em for anything, ever. Some luck but it

If you are a Dodger fan like Ginny is, it has been pretty painful since the All Star break. The bull pen has an ERA of 6.99, worst in both leagues, and there is no clutch hitting when we need runs. Seems to me, the Dodgers have been paying for players past performance and getting nothing for future performance.

Juan Uribe was a prime example, big bucks slugger for SF Giants, but did nothing over his time with the Dodgers; they traded him this summer, but they apparently lost the club house rah rah guy to boost morale. Who is the club house leader now ?? Got to look at the hitting and pitching coaches; how can these players continue to swing at low and away consistently with no results ?? The saving grace is that the Giants pretty much suck at this time too.

I have been thinking about the local thievery that has been going on, like the other day when a guy was caught on video breaking into a truck. He was promptly found and arrested but the bet is because of

current law, if it was under $950, he gets a ticket and is released to do it again. The word “scumbag” comes to mind when I think of these folks out trying to steal our stuff. To say that drugs are the cause of all this is in my opinion wrong. They know exactly what they are doing. They know there is help available for them, free help, but they don’t want it. They’d rather steal from us, be really lousy parents and role models, if they have kids; they louse up their and those around them lives, and are happy to have the moniker of “lowlife scumbag” attached to their name. This is America, the land of the free, but not the land where it is ok to take from you and me. If you’re waking up, if you’re sleeping at all, and thinking about who you’re going to steal from today, what is next ?? You gonna kill someone in your efforts or are you going to be killed by someone.

When does this stop; who is responsible, how much money do we waste or throw at the problem; how do we isolate these folks. This isn’t a racial problem, this is an everyone problem. This is an attitude problem; this is a getting out of hand problem; this is a ‘we are sick and tired of it problem’. All we can do for now is be vigilant and diligent, lock up, get the best security you can; eyes and ears work the best, and for Pete’s sake call it in, you won’t get in trouble. By the way, if you are buying stolen stuff, and you know it’s stolen, there are no words despicable enough to describe you.

Liberty Under Fire Let the Hunger Games Begin: The 2016 Presidential Election

By Harold Pease, Ph. D Actually the games have been going on for some time as they do every four years when the mega rich essentially elect our president through their super packs and media outlets. The “game” part of the process is how it is done causing the people to believe that they choose their president when they do not.

I have told my students for years that the quickest way to understand our political system is to watch the movie “The Hunger Games.” The strategy is to herd all voters into their two camps called Republicans and Democrats excluding all other political parties, where there exist few real differences on foreign policy where the super rich have agreement. Since they own all major media outlets, information for or against those they allow to elevate is managed.

The few astute enough to figure this out and learn of other choices are easily brought back into the fold by the siren call that they are throwing away their vote if going outside these “ordained” two parties. Those disaffiliated with both establishment political parties, about 40 percent, called independents, are returned to the fold at election time still forced to choose from the existing approved candidates. And thus only the faces change every four years.

I suppose that as a political scientist by profession this is more easily understood. I write the Federal Elections Commission every October of every election year to find out who is running for president, which I have done since the early 1990’s.

Never has the list of candidates for president been less than 200 and never has the list of political parties, most offering a presidential candidate, been less than 20.

With this in mind let me share some observations with respect to the first Republican Party Debate of the 2016 presidential race. Donald Trump’s immediate surge to the top was, and is, due primarily to extensive initial media coverage and to his defiance of the political correctness which is admired by most (it also has an entertainment aspect). Enemies even liked it because they hoped to see him self-destruct. “It has been a breath of fresh air to have someone tell it like it is,” said many. Most politicians are so afraid to commit they almost say nothing.

Most wonder about his conservative credentials having once been for abortion, a single payer healthcare system, and a proponent of continued funding of the non-abortion parts of the Planned Parenthood, but the entertaining “tell it like it is”

The Taft Independent aspect is so strong. One favorable aspect of electing Trump is that he is not purchased by the rich--other than himself. Others must mold their rhetoric and action to please their financial bosses, not the people. This leaves Trump uncontrolled and the establishment (the other mega rich) cannot have that, thus their early attempt to faze him out by Fox News.

Remember the “double whammy” questions, first by Bret Baer, aimed right at Trump, asking all candidates who might consider running as a third party candidate were he not to get the Republican Party nod, knowing full well that Trump was the only one who had suggested such. The second question, from Megan Kelly, asked him, almost in an accusatory manner, about his position on women. Had these questions come from any other network journalists, other than Fox, such might have been expected. Predictably both were intended to damage Mr. Trump.

Clearly the favorites of the establishment (mega-rich) in the Republican Party for many months have been moderates Jeb Bush and Chris Christie. It is never a real conservative. Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Carly Florina, all with excellent performances in the debates, are in place partially to show the diversity of the party as opposed to the serious absence of diversity on race in the Democratic Party. All of these, and Scott Walker, can be molded by their financial bosses with the exception of Ted Cruz who they despise and will work to faze out later. Remember, as intelligent as any of these persons are they will be responsible for the placement of hundreds in a new administration and will rely largely on the opinion of those already in place which is largely the establishment view. Ben Carson and Carly Florina are especially vulnerable with respect to this. They know little with respect to the workings of the Federal Government—or any government. Marco Rubio’s cave two years ago on immigration policy left him damaged with the more conservative element of his party but at the same time viewed as more pliable to the establishment bosses. I expect him to continue to do well because they like him.

Mike Huckabee, as a Council on Foreign Relations member, and Rick Perry, as a former guest to a Bilderberg conference, will not be acceptable to Republicans against the New World Order. Huckabee had an outstanding debate, however, but did not get the traction that I had expected from the performance. Perry may have offended the establishment bosses by his sincere desire to close our southern border, something that the rich oppose because they are working for the “new” North America like the European Community, with open borders.

With respect to the Constitution, a document that cannot take further mutilation as has happened under George W. Bush and Barack Obama allowing us to remain free, the only presidential candidates to reference it in the debate of the top ten were Ted Cruz and Rand Paul both despised by the bosses. Nothing any of the others said tells me that they have any understanding of the Constitution and I am certain that it will not be first consideration in any policy that they derive later. It would be a serious mistake to pick a next president deficient in this area.

Mrs. Ramey was born in Indiana on September 27, 1954 and passed away in Bakersfield on August 8, 2015. She made Taft her home for the last ten years and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed making jewelry, knitting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Shirley Ramey.
