Westside Watcher

MILLER TIME By Randy Miller Hi Everyone, This has not been the best June on record nor has this year been either. It is so sad that we live in this wonderful country that is so free and giving. We have the best of everything, we are the envy of the world; everyone else wants to come here to the land of opportunity, to be treated as equals, and to have the chance to raise your mobility based on your work ethic and ability. What do we show for it; deep divisions and turmoil, looting and burning our cities, and a loss of our identities as a nation of one people from a mixture of many. We are Americans, but many want to divide us back into groups of color, races, creeds, and religions and separate us from our past that many died to protect. Seems to me, we have to ask, who are we ?? Where does all this hate and anger come from especially from our youth ?? Why are they so unhappy ?? Do they think they do not have opportunities and choices ?? I understand the right to peaceful protest, we all have that right, but where does the perceived right come from to loot, burn, destroy, and maim and even kill in the name of perceived wrongs. George Floyd did not deserve to die. No one believes that he did. No one should die at the hands of the police, but it is not that simple. I look at it as a fence, police on one side, the rest of us on the other. We are asking the police to change their training methods to avoid strangulation holds, be nicer kinder gentler when dealing with us. That it is all good and the right thing to do. There are over 800,000 law enforcement personnel in the US in almost 18,000 agencies including cities, counties, states, and Feds. They come in contact with 100,000’s of people on a daily basis. Is it all perfect in each situation; can it ever be ?? What about the other side of the fence where we stand ?? What are we going to do to change our attitudes when we come in contact with the police ?? In 2019 there were 49 police killed on duty, 19 unarmed whites killed by police, and 9 unarmed blacks killed. You cannot assume that in each of these incidents that it was the police at fault. I have no stats on that. But you can see that 9 is too many, but other stats indicate that over 200 armed blacks were killed by police last year with whites higher than that. These stats come from Larry Elder, respected black commentator. He also states that in 2018 there were 593,598 violent victimizations, no homicides included between blacks and whites, 90%(537,598) were committed by blacks against whites and 10%(56,394) by whites against blacks. These are Bureau of Justice statistics. Aren’t these conflicts between races on us and not the police who we call in to be the referee’s ?? Black lives do matter but so do the lives all the other races that we all live with. But where were we when David Dorn, a respected black retired police Captain, who was killed by someone amongst the protesters on the streets of ST Louis ?? Does his black life matter any less that anyone else ?? It is a struggle to understand why some lives matter more than others, are we not all God’s children ?? Back to the looters, the common theme that was expressed by them were based on two theories. One that all these businesses have insurance that will replace everything, and secondly that “they are making money off of us”. Wow, what’s to keep you from going out every night and doing that ?? Can you imagine them coming to your home and looting but also taking priceless irreplaceable family heirlooms ?? I have a theory about the looting and burning; street gangs. Do you think they stayed at home and watched TV ?? I have not heard any questions raised about them. During the Rodney King riots, it was gang members who were starting fires from LA down to Long Beach. Don’t all these major cities have a gang presence ?? A friend I know had asked his friend ”Do you see me as white, he said yes, oh, I thought you saw me as your friend”. It is how you see people; if you see race, creed, color, religion, then maybe you have a problem that needs solved. If you promote yourself as race, creed, color, or religion maybe you have a problem too. We have a ways to go to get back on the same page with each other and it begins at home, let’s work on it. Dumbest idea ever, defund the police. So, we turn to street justice with roving groups of “social workers” melting out instant justice; I thought that was Sharia Law. No thanks. I have been writing this column for some time now. I have enjoyed it very much as I hope you have, but I find it is time to step back and take a respite. There is so much going on right now in my head, family wise, and in this nation we live, I don’t feel that I’m the voice to speak and seek out the answers that will give you some comfort. I hope you will continue to support the Independent and even the Driller and all our local businesses. Taft is and will always be my home to live, work, play and learn, it is the “Best of Places”. I’ll see you around town.

Defunding Police Isn’t the Answer By Congressman Kevin McCarthy Washington, D.C. – House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) joined Fox News’ Fox & Friends this morning to discuss Democrats’ dangerous push to defund the police. McCarthy explained that we should instead be focusing on creating better performance, transparency, and accountability within the police force. Leader McCarthy also spoke about his friend Angela Underwood Jacobs, whose brother was senselessly murdered protecting a federal building during a recent protest in Oakland, California. Highlights of remarks are below, or watch online here. “Angela [Jacobs] is an amazing woman. She served on the City Council in a city I represented in Lancaster. She even thought about running for Congress... “[She is] well loved throughout her community, [and an] activist within her community. And she got the sad news like others where she lost her brother Patrick who was a federal officer protecting a federal building who was shot and killed during these protests. “She is going to come and speak to the committee today about her loss just like the Floyds’ loss as well... [and the] senseless murders that have taken place during this time period. This is a moment where this nation is grieving. Angela is grieving. The Floyd family is grieving. I grieve for them, and this is a moment [where] we can listen and strive to be that more perfect union. “And I hope her words that she speaks today, that both sides will listen to them and take them into consideration as we move forward on [how] best to accomplish our goals. “This movement of defunding the police through the Democratic party is stronger than impeachment ever was [or] Medicare for All. They are already taking actions on it. Cities are already doing that, and that’s the last thing you want to happen [because it will] perpetuate the problem more... “We should be providing more money for training. If you look at the recent studies by Chiefs of Police, 80 percent of them said there is a greater need for training. We want the very best officers out there so we should provide better training and transparency... “And then you want accountability. 99% of all officers believe and put their life on the line to protect and serve us. But what about the 1% of bad apples? We’ve got to be able to remove those individuals... If we have better performance, better transparency, and better accountability we will have a much better solution to this problem.”

Anti-racism Protesters Gather in Taft to Protest Bigotry, Police Violence, Create Awareness By Michael Long Publisher, Taft Independent

The Taft Independent The event ended after one hour, and marchers returned on the Rails to Trails to the DMV and dispersed by 8pm.

the desire to make people aware of racism and police brutality, so she decided to have an event to bring awareness to Taft.

The march was originally planned on Center Street, but Lopez changed the march route to the Rails to Trails.

Lopez, 21, is a TUHS and Taft College graduate, and Cal Sate Bakersfield student studying to be a special education teacher, possibly in Taft.

Many Taft and Center Street business owners took precautions against possible property damage by storing items inside their stores.

Lopez said that she met with Taft Mayor Dave Noerr earlier in the week to discuss the protest and Noerr told her he would walk with the marchers.

Albertson’s and True Value Hardware moved product normally left outside to safe storage. At least one restaurant and market was closed on Center Street.

After the march, Noerr said that the event was peaceful and people were able to use their first Amendment right to free speech. “Protests around the country are splitting people apart,” Lopez said “and I don’t want that to happen in our community”. Lopez made a flyer with a Black Lives Matter headline announcing the protest which circulated on Facebook and Twitter a week before the march, causing some to comment and worry about outside protesters coming to Taft.

Nearly 100 protestors gathered in Taft Saturday evening to march and protest against police brutality and racism. The peaceful protest, organized by Taft resident Hailee Lopez started out from the Department of Motor Vehicles building on Center Street and progressed down the Rails to Trails park to the Oilworkers Monument, with marchers carrying signs denouncing racism and chanting “Black Lives Matter”.

But the protest was carried out peacefully with many families walking wth children and seniors. “Taft police are not the problem, they have a respectful and good reputation,” Lopez said. “We want to make people aware and get rid of racism in America”.

Most were wearing masks and taking Cover 19 precautions, however social distancing did not apply to most participants.

Taft police vehicles, the California Highway Patrol and DMV security were present in force at the march and DMV building.

Once assembled at the Oilworkers Monument, people peacefully spoke out about police violence and racism. While many Taft residents were worried about possible violence and damage to local businesses, no acts of violence or damage to any property was reported, and the protest occurred without incident. The march began at 6:30pm at the DMV office. Once assembled at the monument, speakers made remarks against bias, police brutality and racism.

Center Street building owner Don Braun boarded up his building windows to ensure against damage to his building. However, it was business as usual on Center Street where restaurants were busy with customers and many people watched from lawn chairs or stood to observe the protests. Taft resident and protest organizer Hailee Lopez, who is not affiliated with BLM, said she felt

The march was one of hundreds organized across the nation following the killing of George Floyd, a black man, by Minneapolis police. Many of those marches were marked by riots, random and organized violence, assaults on business owners and the assault and killing of several police officers.

Recepie Corner By Brenda Collins I have held on to this recipe for 50 years because it sounded so good and looked easy. For anyone with orange trees, it is hard to find recipes to use up all the oranges you get from a tree. Juicing them and pouring the juice into ice cube trays and freezing them are an option. Then, you may take out as many as you need for a glass or a recipe. Well, I am sick of staying home, sheltering in place. That’s a phrase we will long remember with a lot of unpleasant memories, I’m sure. It is just myself and my husband, Ed. . Now, I love Ed. We have been married for 42 years. But, sometimes I really, really wish I had someone else to LOOK AT? My close friend, Sharon McElmurry, lives just on the corner, but even she and I have not “gotten together” because of the virus. It is not so much afraid of her as I would hate to pass something on to anyone. That’s the devil of this virus. It “hides” for 14 days with no symptons to the unsuspecting and then BAMMM! It jumps out at you and you worry, who have I been around and who have I made sick? They keep talking about the “ventolators” and putting you in a coma and the recovery ratio is so low for recovery for those that have been on one, terrifying. I have asthma and an immune system that just grabs at anything that is out there, so I am not taking any chances. I can’t even imagine trying to home school your children while worrying about your job, money, groceries. My heart really goes out to those families

The Taft Independent My daughter-in-law, Jo, called Sunday. She was watching my son pressure wash his service truck. She was “helping” him by pointing out the places he was missing. She said it was “entertaining”. I don’t think my son thought so. But, hey we grab our fun where we can find it! Jo lost her job due to the falling oil prices. She has worked for E & B Oil for 8 yrs and took the layoff hard. You really become loyal to a company after that length of time. And it wasn’t just the job itself it was the fact that she and my son, Mark, both electricans, worked together everyday. They are familiar with every circuit panel, every pump or power line, etc. They sometimes lunched together and got home together. And they always had the job to discuss at night. That opportunity may not come again for them. They work so well together. They have helped me with wiring and lights and replacing ceiling fans and I marvel at their ability to work together without “yelling”? I can’t even be in the kitchen with Ed for 10 min without getting exasperated! No, Ed and I do not do anything remotely the same way. That’s not to say his way is wrong or mine is better (it usually is, though), it’s just I am impatient and want something done, NOW! When someone would ask me to do something I usually got up and did it. When I ask Ed he says OK and just continues to sit in his chair. I then ask again and he usually replies that he will do it before going to bed or in the afternoon or by tomorrow or ????? See what I mean? Crazy, right? It’s the little things that eventually get you to crazy. It was nice to get out of the house yesterday. We ran a few errands, delivering papers to a friend, dropping off parcels to the post office and stopping by True Value to pick up special batteries for our cordless phones. The phones kept going dead in the middle of a conversation and I kept blaming our carrier. Then I started to think it might be the batteries. Then I thought maybe we just needed new phones, but Ed (you know that guy that never helps me) took the backs off the phones, called True Value and they had almost enough batteries on hand to do

the job, but, we have 5 phones, so needed more and they said no problem, and ordered them. They sure are pleasant and they seem to know Ed very well. I can’t imagine why. A ‘do it yourselfer’ he is not. He is, howeve, very friendly and personable and likes to visit with people. So, they all know him there.? Like I said, 42 years so there must be something there? I say a prayer for our WORLD that we will survive this Nostradamus predicted this pandemic in 1551. Right down to the country it would come from, China? Crazy. All I can say is, truckers keep those groceries and goods coming. They are not having it so easy either. No open diners, no open reststops. Days on the road. God bless them. Try this Orange Cake. It will take your mind off those screaming kids in the living room throwing stuff at each other instead of studying. enjoy!

ORANGE WALNUT CAKE 1 Cup butter – room temp. 1 1/3 Cup sugar 4 eggs 1 ½ tsp baking powder 1 ½ Cups flour 2 Tblsp. grated orange rind 2 Tblsp. Orange juice ½ Cup chopped walnuts 1 Pkg. (15 oz) golden raisins In 9” long pan (bread loaf pan) or round cake pan Cream butter and sugar, add eggs. Mix in flour and baking powder. Add rind and juice, walnuts and raisins. Stir well. Pour into greased, floured pan. Bake @350 degrees for 50 – 60 min. Frost (optional) with 1 pkg. powdered sugar and orange juice, (add by the Tblsp at a time til you get the right consistency).
