2018 holds heaps of excitement for us as we eagerly await the completion of our 40,000 sq ft.

Feldenkreis Cultural Center / George and Mariita Feldenkreis / Fanny F. Hanono and Family / Oscar and Ellen Feldenkreis and Family, which will be home to the Alan & Diane Lieberman Theater, Scheck Family Plaza, the Victory Center, along with many interest and activity rooms/ studios. We are busy planning grand opening programs and look forward to announcing, in the very near future, a sampling of the activities that will be offered. To get an Insider’s View of the Cultural Center, please contact Helga Gorin, at 305-932-4200, ext. 163, to schedule your tour and see first-hand how our MAR-JCC is moving forward to serve the interests and needs of our growing North Miami-Dade (and surrounding area) Jewish community.

During the months ahead, the leadership of our MAR-JCC will continue to work diligently to meet the goals of our capital campaign. I look forward to our members and friends adding their names to our growing list of contributors who are joining me in investing to enhance both Jewish and community life. If interested in learning about “dedicables” in our Cultural Center, please do not hesitate to contact me.

This coming year is replete with opportunities. From serving the very youngest to the very oldest, few Jewish Community Centers can boast the scope and level of activity that resonates within the boundaries of our 17 acre campus on a daily basis. As you review this Program Guide, I am sure that you will agree with me that kudos should be extended to our outstanding staff that work tirelessly, day-in and day-out, to provide you with eclectic and broad-based programs from which to choose, as well as create a welcoming setting for all segments of our community to make the MAR-JCC their home away from home.

To you…our constituents, I want to extend my gratitude for your patience during the course of not just one, but two construction projects that you encountered since the publication of our last Program Guide. We look with pride at the completed (re)construction of the FeldenkreisFeig-Hanono Athletic Field, which is providing a first class venue for our different field sports teams and classes. And, in the very near future, some of our parking challenges will be alleviated when the construction fencing comes down and we recapture the approximate 100 parking spaces that have been used as part of the Cultural Center’s construction site.

The Sandra & Lawrence Bronson Early Childhood Development Center (ECD), open to MAR-JCC members, is a learning community devoted to providing a stimulating environment for development, meaningful relationships and Jewish values. We work together with families to help children become critical thinkers, problem-solvers, good citizens and active members of our community. ECD teaching staff has (minimally) obtained a CDA certification.

INFANT/TODDLER CENTER

Ages 2 Months-2 Years A year-round program offering a safe environment. Children are grouped by age and enjoy music and movement, fingerplay and playground time. Toddlers also participate in art, physical education and Israeli dance classes. Appropriate challenges are built into activities to encourage each child’s developmental, cognitive and social growth.

PLAYGROUP

Age 2 A year-round program that incorporates music, movement, social interaction and playground fun into the basic components of early learning. Classrooms are centerbased with language development activities small and gross motor activity centers and cognitive growth activities.

Included in the curriculum are music, Israeli dance and physical education – all conducted by program specialists.

Ages 3-4 (5 after 9/1/17) Children learn math, science, writing, reading, art, manipulatives, language and more using the model of the Creative Curriculum for Preschool. Hebraica In its efforts towards ensuring Jewish continuity, Hebraica offers to the Jewish community a platform to promote Jewish identity, Jewish values, Jewish socialization and a love of Israel.

Hebraica stresses the importance of family, volunteerism and community involvement and Jewish Peoplehood in action. It reaches out to all segments of the Jewish community through programs for Jewish children, tweens, teens and adults.

MACCABI TZAIR MIAMI Grades K-10

A branch of Maccabi World Union, this Jewish youth movement engages participants in activities promoting Jewish identity, connection to the People and Land of Israel and Jewish socialization.

Group leaders (madrichim) are graduates of our leadership development program and have been trained to lead social, cultural, educational and recreational activities.

TZAIR Grades K-6

Begins February 4 I Saturdays I 3 - 6 pm $230 Members I $340 Non-Members Our Jewish youth group participants (chanichim) meet with peers under the supervision of group leaders (madrichim), engage in Jewish socialization, global awareness, mitzvah projects, field trips, a sleepover and (machanot) campouts.

Bamachol

Bamachol (in Hebrew means “in the dance”) brings the Israeli concept of “dance academy” to our Michael-Ann Russell JCC. The program allows children to grow physically, socially, artistically and creatively. Bamachol promotes skills development, friendship, mutual respect and Jewish culture, under the supervision of highly qualified and talented staff. The division into age groups and class levels allows each child to have his or her own path of advancement, based on interest and talent.

In addition to a number of classes, rehearsals will be scheduled to prepare for dance performances. Registration fees listed are for a full-year program which concludes with Festival Yachad in late May/early June. Most classes listed below have achieved maximum capacity. There is a $50 costume fee per child, per dance program. 10% discount applies to any registration of three or more Bamachol dance classes per person.

Rikudim Grades Pre-K - Adult Ongoing through Festival Yachad, our Israeli Dance (Rikudim) program is well known in our South Florida community. With the goal of teaching and perpetuating Jewish culture and tradition, children learn Rikudim (circle & line dances) as well as other choreography throughout the year. Groups from grade 5 through college participate in special performances & dance festivals, where, depending on their peer group, they may travel to Orlando, New York, Vancouver, Mexico, Panama, Sao Paulo and Israel!

Ballet/Hip-Hop/Jazz Classes BALLET

Grades Pre-K3 - 6 Powered by Kirova Ballet Academy, our MAR-JCC offers this intensive ballet training that is known worldwide. Kirova’s distinguished international faculty teaches the Vaganova Syllabus of classical Russian ballet technique, the world’s most rigorous and thorough. All students who wish to apply themselves to learn the discipline of classical ballet are welcome. A non-refundable $175 fee required for all Ballet participants (Kirova ballet leotard, ballet shoes and tights included).

HIP-HOP

Grades Pre-K3 - 7 Powered by Live in Color, a national awarded dance company, winning ABC’s $100,000 prize for Best Dance Company.

Directed by Zedric Bembry, this signature technique, dubbed Urban Funk, will wow

dancers and audiences with its blend of hip-hop, modern and jazz, with bits of funk and soul.

JAZZ & TECHNIQUE (PRE-JAZZ)

Grades K-12 Our Jazz program introduces children to Jazz through technique, choreography and dance games. Pre-Jazz registration is by semester, all others full-year (through Festival Yachad). Full year fees are reflected in the chart below for Jazz II, III, IV and V. If there are any available spaces, in any of the fullyear jazz classes, fees will be pro-rated. Jazz Team registration includes enrollment in Ballet 7. Registration for Jazz Team requires a successful audition (conducted by the 2nd week of class). Bamachol directors may extend an invitation to any dancer felt to be an asset to the Jazz Team. Mini/Junior Team registration includes enrollment in Ballet, Hip-Hop, Jazz and Team classes.

Dance Rules/Regulations GENERAL

No jewelry, gum, or snacks are permitted in any class. Dance students must attend classes with their hair brushed neatly back in a ponytail or chinion (bun).

Participants understand that classes may be photographed/videotaped and the Bamachol Dance Program reserves the right to use photos/videos for program publicity.

COMMITMENT & ATTENDANCE

Enrollment requires a commitment and a love for the respective art. In most of our classes, students are required to make a full-year’s commitment, as the program is progressive and depends on weekly development and assessment. Therefore, attendance requirements are as follows: Semester Classes More than two absences, the student may be asked not to be in a portion or a whole choreography in future performance(s).

A student who is dismissed from class more than twice, will be asked to leave the program, with no refund of fees.

The Rabbi Norman Mussman Cultural Arts Department presents a diverse range of cultural arts programming designed to appeal to different ages and interests. Through theatre and dance performances, cinema, literary programs and concerts, the MAR-JCC plays an important role in contributing to North Miami-Dade’s cultural landscape.

ALAN & DIANE LIEBERMAN CHILDREN’S CULTURAL ARTS SERIES Grades K-6

Now in its 22nd season, the Alan and Diane Lieberman Children’s Cultural Arts Series continues to introduce young audiences - primarily from underserved communities - to the wonderful world of live theatre, presenting productions by professional theatre companies/artists that utilize the stage for both entertainment and education.

Designed as school field trips for North Miami-Dade school children, productions are based either on original scripts or adaptations of popular children’s literature.

Productions may recount historical events or message important traits, characteristics, or attributes such as honesty, loyalty, love of family, team-work, accepting differences, etc. Towards furthering the educational component of the series.

• Each teacher, in advance, receives a study guide about the show • A copy of the book (if based on a children’s book/story) is sent to each attending class so students may become familiar with the show’s content while promoting a love of reading • Theater etiquette is reviewed as part of a formal welcome prior to the curtain rising • A Q&A between the audience and cast members takes place at each show’s conclusion To ensure that the series is accessible to all segments of the community regardless of socio-economic background, all shows provide complimentary transportation and admission.

Life in Germany is deteriorating quickly for the Lehmanns and all Jews. In order to protect their daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lehmann may have to say good-bye to her forever. Anne must bring meaning out of despair, to cling to love and hope even in a world that seems to be filled with hatred and violence.

For the past 21 years, Festival Yachad Israeli Dance Festival has celebrated the richness of Jewish life and our connection to the People and Land of Israel. Through choreography, beautiful costumes, narration, multi-media and music, the vitality of Israel and the Jewish People is captured. Today, Festival Yachad is the largest Israeli dance festival outside of the State of Israel. More than 500 dancers

The J’s Cultural Arts Theatre JCAT is the educational and performing theatre arm of the MAR-JCC, a year-round program for youth, teens and adults, where participants are initiated into the magical world of theatre through a full season of productions, theatre camps and a wide range of classes and workshops in acting, improvisation and technical theatre. JCAT’s full season of productions presents a cast and crew of actors and technical staff comprised of professionals and volunteers who showcase their love and passion for theatre. JCAT productions may include both adult and youth performers. JCAT Youth production auditions are open to students, Grades 5 and up.

JCAT Community Production By the author of Driving Miss Daisy, this Tony Award winning play once again explores the lives of Jews in the American south. It is December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s uppercrust Freitag family is much more concerned with who is going to “Ballyhoo,” Atlanta’s Jewish cotillion and the social event of the season. The ensuing comedy proves both hilarious and thought provoking as it touches on themes of assimilation, antisemitism and change.

ROCK STEADY BOXING (RSB) AT THE MAR-JCC

PARKINSON’S SUPPORT

Parkinson’s Wellness Support A non-contact program based on boxing workouts and exercises, has been proven to reduce and delay Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

STRENGTH & MOVEMENT

A seated and/ standing strengthening and muscle toning class for adults with limitations, using hand weights, resistance balls and bands focusing on “life movements.”

LATIN RHYTHMIC DANCE

Therapeutic dancing as an effective adjunct to conventional physical therapies for people living with Parkinson’s disease.

TAI-CHI

Improves balance and motor control in Parkinson’s disease patients. This class will teach a deep sense of relaxation while improving balance, posture and mind-body coordination.

SPEECH THERAPY

CHAIR YOGA

According to the American Parkinson Disease Association, yoga therapy has been shown to visibly reduce tremors and improve the steadiness of an individual’s gait. Poses are used to strengthen the core and condition the entire body.

This session teaches patients to develop the strength required to speak at a normal vocal loudness, intelligibility, improved ability to swallow and increased facial expression.

Join our J Baby Parent & Child swim classes and bond with your child while he/she learns to swim! All J Baby classes require parent or caregiver participation.

Starfish: Level 1& 2 I Grades Pre-K 3 & Pre-K 4 At this level, children are able to swim independently. Students are exposed to essential safety skills: jumping, diving, floating, swimming to the bottom and swimming on their backs.

J Baby Level 1 Ages 6-15 months & 16-30 months Our instructors alternately use skills and songs to enhance your child’s learning.

The child will learn about buoyancy and balance while also learning safety skills, breath control and floating.

Sharks: Level 1 & 2 I Grades K-1 Children learn safety and fun skills, as well as real styles like racers. Children learn to love swimming through fun games in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.

J BABY CLASSES

J Baby Advanced Level 2 Age 10-15 months & 16-30 months This level requires the child to have a basic understanding of breath control and the ability to independently move a minimum of 3 feet under water. The child will learn independent swimming and kicking skills, roll-over breathing and floating on their back.

J Baby Super Advanced Level 3 Age 16-30 months At this level, a child will be able to independently swim 6 feet with rollover and floating combinations. This class will prepare them for toddler classes and comfortable swimming with adults.

GROUP LESSONS

Minnows: Level 1 & 2 I Grade Pre-K 3 Bonding and trust. For the toddler who feels comfortable in the water without a parent and has successfully gained enough strength and coordination to independently take a breath. Must have good communication skills.

Barracudas: Level 1 & 2 I Grades 2-5 Swimmers will advance significantly in their diving, freestyle, backstroke and turning techniques. Refinement of stroke techniques will be taught.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING

Pre-Team I Grades 3-6 Swimmers will practice two days a week.

They will be required to swim a minimum of 50 yards and know all four strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. They are also required to attend “A Day at the Races” every season (a fun meet for our Pre-Team swimmers). The team objectives are to improve their swim practice and racing skills, promote goal setting, as well as increase yardage during practice. Tryouts are required to register with our Pre-Team.

Swim Team I Grades 6-12 Swimmers will practice five days a week.

They will be required to accomplish the skills and specific time sets in order to advance from Pre-Team to the Swim Team. The objectives will be to maintain and refine technique, increase acrobatic endurance and improve speed development. Tryouts are required to register with our Swim Team.

Learn the basics, build confidence, improve technique in each area and find an event to test your abilities. This program will allow your child to experience and train for a triathlon! Child must have basic knowledge of all the strokes and be comfortable riding a bicycle.

Ysidro Gonzalez (YG) Swim Coach Premium Grades 8-12 Learn the basic techniques to become a better swimmer during one-on-one, 40-minute private classes with your swimming instructor.

YG Advance Level 1 or 2 I Grades 8-12 Take the next step after learning the basic techniques in the YG Premium Program and get to the next level. Training is 90 minutes.

Masters & Triathlon Swim Training I Ages 18+ This Masters Swim program is appropriate for USMS swimmers, tri-athletes, lap swimmers and anyone who can swim one length of the pool. Our experienced coach will provide individual feedback about your strokes. Each workout is divided into different lanes based on ability and speed. The program attracts a friendly, low-pressure, fun-based group of swimmers with a wide range of abilities – from those just swimming to get into shape, to those training for their first triathlon or who competed in college. Small Group Fitness Training Program Supervised instructional hour provides targeted training.

Mondays: Boxercise & Self-Defense Self-defense and fitness combined! Under the guidance of a seasoned boxing coach and martial artist, children learn the practical real world self-defense techniques in a controlled, safe and fun environment.

Tuesdays: The Gym Experience Learn how to properly operate and use a variety of fitness machines and equipment and proper and safe form for a variety of exercises designed to work the entire body, improve strength, stamina, balance and burn fat.

Class Boxercise & Self Defense The Gym Experience Cardio Conditioning & Flexibility Outdoor Kids Bootcamp

Wednesdays: Cardio Conditioning & Flexibility Aerobic and Anaerobic conditioning utilizing various cardio machines, the outdoor track, cardio exercise circuits for sprints and interval training aimed to improve stamina, endurance, body composition and burn fat.

Learn the fundamentals and skills of Flag Football with our excellent coaching staff.

Participants are given a chance to develop a passion for this vastly growing sport.

Gymnastics Gymnastics Classes To promote confidence, self-esteem and happy healthy children through education in gymnastics. Athletes maximize their potential through positive physical and mental development in a safe environment with proper skill progressions and age appropriate lessons.

KINDERGYM

Boys & Girls I Grades Pre-K3 - K Builds a strong basic understanding of gymnastics skills, self-awareness, strengthbuilding and improves coordination. Age appropriate apparatus is incorporated to provide a safe and fun instructional environment.

DEVELOPMENTAL GYMNASTICS

Girls I Grade 1+ An introduction to a full spectrum of gymnastics through the use of fundamental skills on all apparatus including vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

Progression of skills and strength follow the guidelines set by USA Gymnastics. Children divided into skill appropriate levels.

TEEN TUMBLING

Boys & Girls I Grades 6+ Our Teen Tumbling class focuses solely on tumbling and somersaulting skills.

In this program, tumblers will begin a foundation on flexibility, conditioning and core strength, and develop skills such as somersaults, cartwheels, handstands and bridge kick-overs. Tumblers will gain experience on the floor exercise, and Tumbl-Trak. Co-Ed Tumbling focuses solely on tumbling skills and does not include curriculum on the other gymnastics events such as bars, beam and vault.

Girls I All Grades I By Invitation Designed for the advanced gymnast. This is a preparatory program for advancement onto our Travel Team.

Girls I Grades K+ I By Invitation Principally geared to athletes who have been involved in the sport and display the skills necessary to participate in the team experience. There are ten competitive levels to the team program.

Levels 1-5 I Grades K+ Compulsory levels that require the gymnast to perform the same routines that are evaluated based on the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic compulsory program.

Make a Meaningful Impact Families Helping Families

As a result of gifts to the Families Helping Famlies Annual Campaign, the MAR-JCC is able to provide programming and services to those without the means to avail themselves of an MARJCC experience. Scholarships benefit early childhood education, after school programs and summer camp; provide older senior adults with wellness and social activities; and so much more.

Capital Campaign Give to our Capital Campaign and invest in the growth of the MAR-JCC and in-turn, enhance our ability to provide expanded programs and services to our members and the community.

The success of this campaign has resulted in the new Cultural Center, George & Mariita Feldenkreis I Fanny F. Hanono and Family I Oscar and Helen Feldenkreis and Family; and the new home of The Victory Center. Naming and dedication opportunities still available.

Create a Jewish

Legacy

Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) is an endowment program representing a shared commitment by area synagogues, agencies and day schools to work together to secure a more vibrant Jewish future. With CJL, you have the ability to create one legacy gift which can benefit all of the Jewish organizations that are important to you. Legacy giving can take the form of a bequest in your will, gift of life insurance, gift of IRA or Pension funds, gift of cash or assets and a variety of other vehicles. Gifts to the endowment are deposited, in perpetuity and only a portion of the annual interest earned on this account is used. This means your gift will continue to be impactful forever!

Corporate

The Corporate Partnership program offers opportunities for corporations to establish a relationship with MAR-JCC leadership, members, participants and guests while providing needed financial support to the MAR-JCC. This program enables companies to market to this valuable audience at events; on the MAR-JCC website; on collateral materials and newsletters; and through various other vehicles. Each MAR-JCC event and program has its own unique attendance/demographic and sponsorship packages are available based on those factors.

Some of our Established Funds MITZVAH FUND

Bar/Bat Mitzvah children perform a Mitzvah by giving a portion of their gifts to the Mitzvah Fund and by inspiring their parents and grandparents to match their gift. Gifts to The Mitzvah Fund go directly to support our Scholarship Fund and special populations.

THE BAMACHOL CHAI SOCIETY

In order to provide valuable scholarship funds to dancers, the Bamachol Chai Society was established - limited to an exclusive group of 18 families contributing $3,000 a year (payable in 10 payments of $300 a month). Bamachol Chai Society Members receive preferred VIP seating for all Bamachol dance performances.

NAMED ENDOWMENT FUNDS

Named Endowment Funds are established by donors to benefit a MAR-JCC department, program, or service of particular importance to them. If interested in supporting one of these areas, you may donate to any of these funds. You may also establish your own endowment fund, where you determine both the name and the fund’s ultimate purpose, with a minimum donation of $25,000. Funded in perpetuity, your contribution is impactful for as long as that program exists.

HABIMAH SOCIETY

Knowing that a theatre program cannot be sustained by ticket sales alone, contributions to the Habimah Society provide an invaluable source of support to The J’s Cultural Arts Theatre’s year-round program. Gifts of $1,000 or more receive choice seating for all JCAT productions.
