welcome Welcome to Camp Sol Taplin Summer 2018! We are thrilled to present you with this brochure that details the amazing summer options for your child(ren) at the MAR-JCC.

Our new Feldenfreis Cultural Center, George and Mariita Feldenkreis, Fanny F. Hanono and Family, and Oscar and Ellen Feldenkreis and Family building will be open for all of our campers to enjoy. This 40,000 square foot center houses a state-of-the-art gymnastics center, music labs, art studios, dance rooms and so much more. The new Alan and Diane Lieberman Theater will be the site for all Spirit Rallies, Shabbat celebrations and our popular JCAT program. We are also excited to introduce, by demand, new camps such as Cheerleading, Cooking and Coding.

Camp Sol Taplin provides flexible registration options which allow your kids to “camp hop” by choosing a variety of camp experiences. Does your child like basketball and cooking? Great, they can enjoy those camp experiences! Does your child like swimming and soccer? Excellent, because they can register for both camps this summer at the MAR-JCC. Let our camp experts help design your kids’ awesome summer plans all on one campus!

Good to know Summer Staff

Our staff is made up of caring individuals dedicated to ensuring each camper’s experience is positive and meaningful. Some of our staff grew up at Camp Sol Taplin and/or are year-round MAR-JCC staff members.

Camp staff members include: moms, dads, educators, college students and young adults, who are looking for a rewarding experience. We take pride in the ethnic and cultural diversity of our staff. Our staff has one goal, to provide the best summer experience for your camper.

All staff is well-trained prior to the start of the summer camp season ensuring we are well-prepared and have lots of camp spirit. They also go through a rigorous interview, Level 2 background check and drug testing.

This year, we host specially trained cultural emissaries from Israel - Summer Shlichim - who bring their talents, skills and love for Israel to our summer camp program. Each Shaliach has recently completed his/her army or national service and is experienced in education.

Families may share this international experience by extending “Home Hospitality.”

Financial Assistance The CHILDREN’S TRUST

The MAR-JCC is a beneficiary of The Children’s Trust to provide financially qualifying Kindergarten-8th grade campers (including campers with special needs) with an 8-week summer experience.

•Registrants must commit to the full 8-week summer camp program.

Camp Communication

All Camp Sol Taplin communications will be sent through email. Please check your email regularly. If your email address changes, please provide the new address to the Membership Services Office and the Camp Sol Taplin staff.

Scholarship assistance

Qualifying families who wish to apply for financal assistance must submit an application by April 2, 2018.

•Limited funds are available.

•Scholarship requests will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please submit an application as early as possible. Scholarship dollars are based upon the regular camp fee.

Kid KonnectioN (Before & After Care)

An optional extended day program is available mornings and afternoons for an additional fee.

Morning care includes outdoor play and quiet games, while afternoon care may include swimming, athletics, movies and game room.

Morning: 7:30-8:45am Afternoon: Monday-Thursday, 4-6pm Friday, 4-5:30pm • A $1/per minute late fee will be collected after 6pm M-Th/after 5:30pm on Friday

FREE Bus Transportation

A1A Transportation has been transporting our campers for more than 15 summers. Avoid carpool lines and take advantage of this free and counselor supervised service.

First come, first served basis; registration required.

Group Pick-up/Drop-off: Aventura Isles, Aventura Waterways, Harbor Islands, Highland Lakes and Presidential Estates (Minimum - 20 riders/Maximum 50 riders). Any camper under 6 years old must be accompanied by an older sibling.

• Parent/Guardian required to be at locations for pick-up and drop-off at designated times.

code of conduct CAMP SOL TAPLIN is committed to making the camp environment safe and fun for everyone. Accordingly, all campers and their parents acknowledge the Code of Conduct to demonstrate their understanding of, and compliance with our camp’s behavior expectations. No child will be admitted to camp without a parent/guardian signature (see page 12). Moreover, failure to comply with its principles may result in immediate suspension or dismissal from camp without a refund. We urge you to review the following information closely with your child(ren).

CAMP SOL TAPLIN PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO: 1. Be active listeners, cooperate, and follow directions given by camp staff, supervisors, guests and lifeguards at all times.

2. Treat fellow campers, staff, supervisors, guests, lifeguards, public/private property and the environment with the utmost respect. We expect every camper to exercise goodwill towards others, our camp activities and facilities. Courtesy and respect are requirements of the camp community.

3. Refrain from using rude, offensive or generally bad language. Harsh verbal words, tone of voice, foul language or gestures will not be tolerated.

4. Keep hands and bodies to themselves. If physical contact is made with another person, it must be both welcomed and appropriate. Teasing, horseplay, pushing, kicking, hitting, fighting, bullying or harassment will not be tolerated.

5. Stay with camp group, at all times. No child is permitted to leave the camp group without his or her counselor’s permission and direct supervision.

6. Refrain from bringing fireworks, firearms, toy guns or weapons of any kind to camp.

7. Refrain from bringing or using any illegal drugs, tobacco, alcohol or intoxicants of any kind.

8. Know and understand the general camp rules, regulations and guidelines associated with the camp bus, van and group.

9. Cell phones and other mobile communication device usage (except in authorized camp activities) is strictly prohibited during the camp day. Other electronics, such as iPads, iPods, video games, laptops, etc., are prohibited. Any such item brought to camp will be taken and returned at the end of the day.

Camp Sol Taplin is not responsible for theft or damage to any camper’s personal property.

10. Campers will be expected to participate in all scheduled camp program activities unless exempt because of health or parental restriction. Explanation must be in writing.

11. There is a zero-tolerance policy for theft.

NOTE: It is not possible to anticipate every possible situation that may arise. In the absence of a particular situation or activity not listed above, COMMON SENSE AND COURTESY SHALL PREVAIL.

Camp Sol Taplin implements a system of camper monitoring in its effort to provide an incomparable experience for all of its campers. If Camp Sol Taplin determines that a camper is failing to adhere to this Code of Conduct, or presents a safety, behavioral or other concern that is detrimental to the camper, other campers, staff or employees, or to the overall camp experience, Camp Sol Taplin reserves the right to enforce consequences. These consequences may include, but are not limited to: limitation of privileges, verbal and/or written warnings, parental notification, or, in extreme cases, expulsion from Camp Sol Taplin without refund. Additionally, campers who repeatedly fail to adhere to the Code of Conduct may run the risk of not being allowed to attend Camp Sol Taplin or MAR-JCC activities in the future.

2018 camp sol taplin policies & procedures Eligibility for Enrollment: 1. Enrolling families must have a current membership in good standing with the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center (MAR-JCC) throughout the entire camp season. Membership dues and other MAR-JCC financial obligations must be current at time of registration.

2. Proof of residence will be requested to obtain Out-of-Town membership status.

A copy of an official, current report card, or school tuition bill indicating the name of the school and student/camper will be requested.

3. All campers must be able to use the bathroom independently by the first day of camp except for Barvazim.

Registration: 1. Each registration form must be accompanied by the first camp payment, including a $250 non-refundable deposit per camper.

2. All enrollments are subject to space availability. You will be notified if you have selected a camp in which capacity has been reached. A wait-list for each camp will be established. Families on the wait-list will be notified if space becomes available. Camp Sol Taplin reserves the right to cancel any camp due to lack of enrollment.

3. All buddy requests should be made on the registration form. Every effort is made to accommodate one request per camper, however, requests cannot be guaranteed. Please note that some camps are grouped by ability and skill level.

4. A 5% sibling discount is applied and deducted from the lower of the camp fees. Discount also applies to transportation and Kid Konnection fees. Not applicable for select camps.

5. Payments may be made in installments through May 15, 2018. Final payment of camp fees is due no later than May 15, 2018. Registration forms submitted after May 15, 2018, must be paid in full at time of registration.

6. Acceptable forms of payment include: check, AMEX, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, cash and wire transfer.

7. There will be a $35 charge for each NSF check or returned EFT debit. There will be a $20 charge for each declined credit card transaction.

8. 5% early discount only applies to a registration of a minimum of three weeks.

9. Registration less than 24 hours before/on a Friday does not guarantee space in a field trip for a following week.

Special Service: In the event our staff sees your camper is having difficulty within the structure we provide, Camp Sol Taplin reserves the right to have a behavioral specialist conduct an observation and oversee the implementation of behavior modification programs with staff and your child. If, after the implementation of these procedures, your child continues to experience difficulty, we may recommend that he/she participates in a “shadow program,” which we provide at an additional fee.

Changes and Additions: 1. In order to request a change, a drop/add form must be completed in the Membership Services Office.

2. Changes and additions are subject to space availability.

3. A $75 change fee is applied for each drop/add per child.

4. When enrolling during early registration period, the first change is free.

Refund & Cancellation Policy: 1. Refund requests must be made in writing to the MAR-JCC President/CEO prior to May 15, 2018.

2. All refunds will be subject to a $75 processing fee and a $250 nonrefundable registration fee per child.

3. Camp fees are NON-REFUNDABLE after May 15, 2018, including, but not limited to absences, withdrawals, inclement weather or in the event a camper is asked to leave camp for disciplinary reasons.

4. MAR-JCC membership is NON-REFUNDABLE. Kid Konnection Extended Care Policy: If a parent/guardian is unable to pick-up a child by “closing time,” please make alternate pick-up arrangements. If this person is not already included on the program’s “Authorized Release Form,” please contact MAR-JCC staff by phone and/or email or text message indicating the name of the designated pick-up person. Said person must present a picture ID. If a parent/guardian has not arrived to pick-up a child at the Extended Care’s closing time and MAR-JCC staff have not heard from parent/guardian, efforts will be made to contact parent/guardian by phone, as well as emergency contact.

If a child has not been picked up within one hour of “ending time” by either parent/guardian, emergency contact, or designated authorized pick-up person, MAR-JCC staff, in keeping with MAR-JCC policy, will contact the Department of Children and Families.

Field Trip Policy: Should the camper be unwilling, unable, or chooses to forgo the designated field trip, alternate accommodations are not available and no refund is given.

Accident Form/Medications: 1. I understand that if medical forms are not completed by the child(ren)’s physician dated after August 21, 2017, and turned into the Membership Services Office prior to May 26, 2018, the MAR-JCC has the right to refuse entry to camp with no refund.

2. All medications must be clearly indicated on the health form and on applicable medication forms. All medications will be maintained in the camp’s infirmary and dispensed by the Camp Medic with written permission from the parent/guardian.

3. A Camp Medic will staff the camp infirmary from 9am-4pm.

4. The cost of accident insurance is included in your child(ren)’s camp fee, as described herein. The accident insurance plan is a supplemental policy that covers the camper and will cover medical expenses that the camper’s personal policy does not pay (i.e., deductibles and percentages not included in the policy (80%-20% plans) up to $10,000 per incident.

If the camper is not already covered by a health insurance plan, the camp policy will pay 100% after proof of non-insurance is supplied to our carrier, up to $10,000 per incident. Note: There is a $75 deductible per accident on each claim. NOTE: Parent/guardian is responsible for payment of all medical expenses incurred. Call Jamie Moya at 305-932-4200, ext. 133, to obtain a claim form.

5. The health history provided to the Camp of my child(ren) is correct as far as I know, and the child(ren) that I have registered have permission to engage in all prescribed camp activities, except as noted by the examining physician and myself.

6. I understand that the MAR-JCC does not assume responsibility for any injury.

In case of medical emergency, I hereby give permission to the physician, selected by the MAR-JCC, to secure proper treatment for my child(ren) and I assume responsibility for all fees. I also understand that the MAR-JCC will offer assistance with filing the claim, but assumes no responsibility for the fees or payment from the insurance company.

Food Policy: 1. All lunches and snacks served at Camp Sol Taplin are Glatt Kosher.

2. In keeping with MAR-JCC’s kashrut (dietary laws) policy, no food or snacks may be sent from home.

3. Ice water is provided throughout the day.

4. Field trip and extended trip meals are “Kosher style.”

Inclement Weather: 1. All outdoor activities and field trips are suspended during inclement weather.

2. Alternate indoor activities will be offered.

3. There are no refunds due to inclement weather.

4. Carpool may be delayed due to inclement weather.

5. Camp Sol Taplin will close following warnings from the National Hurricane Center and directives from Miami-Dade County to its offices/employees.

General Policies: 1. Camp Sol Taplin and MAR-JCC are not responsible for lost or stolen items.

2. I hereby authorize Camp Sol Taplin and MAR-JCC to include my child(ren)’s photograph, voice, or other likeness in photographs, videos, printed, or recorded material, including but not limited to, use on the Internet and MAR-JCC website and marketing materials. I understand further that I will not have any opportunity to approve or review the finished product that may be used in conjunction therewith or the use to which it may be applied.

3. I agree to pay the program(s) fees in which my child(ren) is/are registered, including registration, processing, and late fees where applicable. If payments are not received by due date, the MAR-JCC reserves the right to institute legal action to enforce its rights, in which event, Parent(s) or Guardian(s) will be responsible for all costs of collection, including reasonable attorney’s fees.

4. I hereby give permission for my child(ren) to participate in all camp activities, including planned and unplanned trips away from the camp site utilizing different modes of transportation.

Code of Conduct: I understand that participating in Camp Sol Taplin is contingent upon my child(ren)’s adherence to the Code of Conduct and violation of said code may result in either suspension or termination from summer camp without a refund.
