Henri Ford named new dean of Miller School

Dr. Henri Ford had an easy choice to make when accepting the position as Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine’s new dean – it was his “dream job.”

“I have always said that the only reason I would leave Los Angeles would be to come to Miami,” Ford said.

Ford is a Haitian-born pediatric surgeon who has served as the senior vice president and chief of surgery at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for more than 13 years. He is also the vice dean of medical education and professor and vice chair for clinical affairs in the Department of Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California.

Ford obtained his bachelor’s degree in public and international affairs from Princeton University in 1980 and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1984. He also received his master’s degree in health administration from the University of Southern California.

But Ford said he has had longstanding admiration for UM. Seventeen years ago, his sister was hospitalized in Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center after suffering significant burns. There, Ford observed the physicians’ dedication to meeting his sister’s needs.

He saw UM doctors at work again in 2010, when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake rocked his home country of Haiti. Ford said he was “deeply touched” to see the “unselfishness and dedication of the institution toward the people of Haiti.”

Ford said he shares the same vision as UM President Julio Frenk, of making UM a “hemispheric, excellent and exemplary university.”

“I share that philosophy,” Ford said. “I share that objective.”

He said he wants to incorporate as many different perspectives as possible into research in order to solve critical

problems in the field of medicine.

That includes interdisciplinary work, such as working with the schools of Business and Nursing and Health Studies to translate research discoveries into innovation.

“This is a school that is not only ideally situated at the gateway of Latin America and West Indies,” Ford said. “But it also has tremendous resources when it comes to all of the allied help from professional schools.

We can execute a great convergence of all of these.”

However, Ford said before he addresses the issues of the UM community and the greater South Florida community, he must become familiar with them. He said he hopes to connect with the large Haitian population in the region.

An estimated 213,000 Haitians are living in the MiamiFort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metropolitan areas, according to the Migration Policy Institute.

“I want to get to know the community,” Ford said. “I want to get to know the issues that they face and see how the university can work with them to address their needs. But this is my philosophy: to serve every single person living in Miami or South Florida.”

Ford begins his new position June 1. He will be taking over the dean position previously held by Dr. Edward Abraham, now CEO of UHealth.

Hundreds of University of Miami students will be able to sign up in a year to be among the lucky ones who call the new multi-million dollar student housing village “home.”

Marketing Specialist of Housing and Residential Life Mike Piacentino said the village, the first phase of a 10-year plan to modernize all student housing on campus, is expected to be fully complete and open to residents by fall 2019. Students will be able to sign up for housing in the new village in spring 2019.

“Our plan, right now, is, when we do housing sign up, we have every intention of making the student housing village available for sophomores, juniors and seniors to live in,” Piacentino said.

Students will have to pay a little more to live in the new village than in the current residential colleges.

Piacentino said though they don’t have a set price for the village suites yet, it will reflect market rates that students can expect to find in and around Miami.

He said the university has benchmarked against other institutions as well.

The university announced its

plan to embark on a process to create enhanced community-based residential housing spaces in spring 2017. The university submitted a proposal to the City of Coral Gables for the construction of the 12-acre village that will be composed of 25 clusters of interconnected buildings.

The project was in the works for almost five years, during which students and parents were surveyed. Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Whitely said the project was a result of their responses.

“We certainly listened to what they wanted: apartments, suites, places to cook, not being on a meal plan,” said Whitely in an interview with The Miami Hurricane shortly after the plan was announced last year.

A contract with Arquitectonica, the Miami-based architecture firm, was drafted soon after the university got approval from local government.

The next step was to begin to prepare the land where the new housing village will be constructed by uprooting trees and relocating them to a temporary nursery on campus. Hurricane Irma delayed construction by two weeks, but Piacentino said the storm did not cause too much of an impact on the village’s timeline.

“It was just two weeks,” Piacentino said. “We’re carrying on as normal.”

The last of the pavement was taken out in November and December, meaning construction could begin. Students will start to see “vertical construction” where the UM community will be able to see actual construction coming from the ground up.

As of now, concrete is being poured for the foundation pits. Then, from about April to November, the concrete for the upper levels of the complex, or floors two to six, will be poured. The installation of the village’s exterior skin, windows, mechanical electrical plumbing and interior wall finishes and fixtures will occur during the 2018-2019 academic school year.

By July 2019, the building is expected to receive its temporary certificate of occupancy.

Hecht Residential College Senator Randy Fitzgerald, a freshman, said the new housing is a part of UM President Julio Frenk’s strategic road map for university success.

“President Julio Frenk says we can improve by encouraging academic success, and one of those ways is promoting students to live on campus,” Fitzgerald said.

Iron Arrow Society inducts 22, continues legacy

Twenty-two new inductees were tapped into the Iron Arrow Society last week. The inductees’ foreheads were marked with three lines of green, orange and white paint – the colors of the University of Miami.

Though the selection and initiation process is kept secret as one of Iron Arrow’s longstanding traditions, members are selected based on their embodiment of five main qualities: love of alma mater, character, leadership, scholarship and humility.

Junior Luis Gonzalez was one of the 22 selected this semester.

Gonzalez said he still can’t “wrap his head around” his admittance into the prestigious organization.

“I go day-in and day-out just trying to be the best version of myself that I possibly can be,” said Gonzalez, a broadcast journalism major. “So to be tapped into the Iron Arrow, I’m just so honored, blessed and thankful for the tribe, my friends and fellow Canes.”

The Iron Arrow Society is the most exclusive organization at the UM. Since Iron Arrow’s inception in 1926, less than 2 percent of all university members

have been admitted into the tribe.

Accomplished students, faculty, staff, alumni, administration and trustees are all eligible to be considered for entry into the prestigious organization.

Senior Adrian Nuñez is the society’s Son-of-Chief, or second-incommand. Nuñez, who is also UM Student Government president, said each member tapped into the tribe has impacted the university in a positive way.

“Our members are known to become active and well-regarded members of our community,” said Nuñez, a management and political science double major. “From federal judges, world-renowned doctors, to famous musicians. They bring great acclaim to the University of Miami, which strengthens our image among other institutions in the country.”

As classes began for the first time at UM 92 years ago, nine students founded Iron Arrow with the help of the university’s first president, Bowman Foster Ashe.

They had one goal: to elevate leaders who contributed to the university’s growth and legacy.

However, the founding members wanted their organization to stand out among a slew of other honor societies that had

already been established at other universities across the nation.

So the founding members reached out to the Seminole tribe of Florida.

The members wanted “something that was deeply representative of the locale and its people,” Nuñez said.

They worked together to propose modeling the value and traditions of the Iron Arrow Society after the Seminole tribe.

Then-Seminole Chief Tony Tommie embraced the idea, Nuñez said.

Glad that an educational institution was celebrating his people’s culture, Tommie helped the society’s founders understand and adapt Native American traditions into the values and customs that members still honor today, including the iconic tribal jackets.

The Florida Miccosukee Tribe, which became independent of the Seminoles in 1965, gave jackets to the nine founding members of Iron Arrow and made the society an official clan of the Seminole nation.

To this day, Iron Arrow maintains its ties to the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida by consulting its Miccosukee adviser, Roy Cypress. All Iron Arrow members are granted full membership a the Miccosukee tribe.

Tradition is a pillar of the Iron Arrow Society, and its unique customs have allowed it to maintain a prominent role on and off campus throughout UM’s history.

“To tell the story of Iron Arrow is to tell the story of the University of Miami,” Nuñez said. “So I would say the Iron Arrow Honor Society is a living, breathing and evolving University of Miami history.”

Dear MSD Student Journalists: This weekend was the start of your spring break – and you spent it marching.

Last month, when tragedy befell you, it might have forced you to change your plans. But it didn’t force you to lead the charge in such a loud, courageous, impossible-to-ignore way.

That was all you.

But you didn’t need to be told that. We just wanted to say you’re making us proud – as journalists, as students, as people – and your commitment to telling your story has not gone unnoticed.

You student journalists – whether you’re on the staff of The Aerie or The Eagle Eye, or picked up the habit in the last month and a half – are in the difficult position of wearing two hats, those of subject and reporter. And you’re wearing them well, though we’re sure at times it is painful, infuriating and confusing.

The future of journalism doesn’t lie solely in a few famous papers, fulltime newsrooms and big names telling people what they need to know. It’s a more immersive world of on-the-fly reporting and, often, telling your own stories as they happen – not waiting for a bigger outlet to catch wind and report. You’re embracing that future by getting information out via Twitter, Snapchat and long-form Facebook posts that tell us more about this tragedy than any evening broadcast ever could.

More than that, though, you’re teaching us how to do our job in the midst of tragedy. It’s a lot to ask of any journalist to remain composed when reporting on a story like this – much less a student who lived through it. But there you are, embodying the importance of journalism as you show your community ways it can help and tell the stories that matter.

This role of a journalist is especially important in dark times, when people are searching for answers, information – anything they can cling to and understand.

Instead of adding to that darkness with the sort of voyeuristic, culpritfocused coverage so many news organizations are prone to do, you continue to uplift your community with stories of courage, healing and hope.

In the last six weeks, The Eagle Eye has written about means of remembrance, activism and selflessness – and you were living those ideals, too.

Your journalism embodies what we hope becomes common practice in the field: that of emphasizing the human side of your school, the names you remember and the people who won’t stop fighting for a better tomorrow.

We hope you don’t underestimate the impact of the work you’re doing, at every level of the storytelling process.

To trolls and haters, you’ve responded with a loud, resounding “no” – no to the gun lobby, to those who say you’re too young to get it, to the possibility of this ever happening again. From one team of journalists to another, we’re grateful to you for helming this revolution.

Reconnecting with friends helps to recharge This spring break, I had the opportunity to spend a great deal of time with friends whom I otherwise do not see enough during school. It was a

By Mackenzie beautiful week, Karbon and people carried Staff Columnist themselves with more candor and spontaneity than I am accustomed to seeing. My friends and I yearned for conversation stretching past sunrise – exchanges that usually cannot reach fruition outside of breaks.

I was overwhelmed by a realization I have made many times in my life: The relationships we have, and the love we give and receive, are the most important aspects of our

existence.

So why are relationship-affirming opportunities so often extinguished by some variation of “I don’t have time?”

First, we are often told growing up that school is the most important thing.

It was easy to justify this assertion back when choices were “Spend the afternoon painting with a friend or study for a biology test” – situations in which one option is clearly more responsible than the other.

More than that, however, there wasn’t a momentous downside to forgoing socializing in favor of preparing for school. In childhood – if we were lucky – we received constant love and support from family members, who we likely saw every day.

We were always rubbing elbows with school peers inside classrooms or on the playground. This is no accident – American school systems contain

mechanisms for socialization intended to aid children’s enculturation and development.

Those mechanisms fall out in college. Most people are uninterested in befriending students in their classes.

Many of my friends live alone or have roommates they don’t know well. It’s challenging to make time for intimate friends and maintain a network of support. The effects of isolation, in conjunction with academics and other stressors, are clear: Depression and anxiety rates among college students are higher than they have ever been and are on an upward trend. Suicide is the second most common cause of death for college students, behind motor vehicle accidents, according to the American College Health Association.

Of course, these issues are complex and individual. But one thing we can all do is equate socialization to self-care and

prioritize important relationships the same way we make time for homework and exercise. While one might expect that this approach will reduce the ability to excel academically, I have found the opposite to be true. When armed with the love of my friends, I am not only happier but much more productive.

Interesting how that works, right?

If your return from spring break is anything like mine, you may feel overwhelmed by the volume of responsibilities that materialized out of nowhere. This is the time when reaching out to friends is most important. The more we make ourselves available to the people who we need and who need us, the stronger we all become.

Some of the speeches were purely informational, while others were more personal and heartfelt.

A rape survivor told her moving story with passionate conviction, and a pair of students performed a beautiful piece of slam poetry.

But given the nature of the event, I was shocked to see fraternity members speaking, too. At one point, a frat brother made a comment about perpetrators of sexual assault being “not bad” people who “make bad decisions while intoxicated.”

I’m not trying to launch a personal vendetta on him or any of the frat members that were at the rally. I’m sure some of them are invested in this cause and want to make positive changes in their fraternities, but their prominent presence on stage was inappropriate and made for terrible optics.

I walked away from the rally with questions about the role of fraternities in our current climate, in which women are speaking out about their experiences with assault and abuse.

Frats often uphold and magnify a culture of toxic masculinity, which in turn creates an environment where sexual assault is permissible – or even encouraged. In 2013, an email from a Georgia Tech fraternity member to his Phi Kappa Tau brothers, titled “luring your rapebait” was released.

The email provided the brothers with instructions on how to pick a target and coerce her into having sex.

In 2014, the Texas Tech chapter of Phi Delta Theta was stripped of its charter following controversy over a party, which included a banner reading “No Means Yes, Yes Means Anal.” While these examples

are problematic for obvious reasons and easy to denounce, the harmful culture perpetuated by frats is much more nebulous.

A 2007 study published by John Foubert, Jerry Tatum and J.T. Newberry found that men in fraternities were three times more likely to commit rape than other male students.

According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), among undergraduate students, 23.1 percent of females and 5.4 percent of males experience rape and sexual assault through physical force, violence or incapacitation. The real figures are likely higher, since rape and sexual assault are vastly underreported crimes, especially when the victim is male.

Surely, fraternity members are more aware of sexual assault today than they were a few years ago and they have work to do if sexual assault on college campuses is to be eliminated. Education about consent, what constitutes assault and power dynamics plays a huge part in reducing incidents of sexual violence.

Unfortunately, no number of preventative programs or online courses can work if the culture doesn’t change. The task is daunting and would require sweeping administrative policy changes coupled with individual members standing up for what is right, instead of standing up for one another.

Not all frat members are rapists, but every member who sees his brother coerce a drunken person into sleeping with him is complicit.

Unless you’re actively working to change the toxic environment, you are part of the problem.

Perhaps at the next rally, frat brothers who want to engage with the topics of sexual assault and gender-based violence should hand over their microphones and listen instead.

By Grace coming down, Wehniainen you see caOpinion Editor lamity. Then, a second later, you see people. Four lanes of cars whose drivers rush out to respond to a disaster they never planned to witness.

Miami drivers get a lot of flak but, on this day, they served as a testament to the best of humanity, acting on an innate human urge to help. So did the scrubs-clad doctors and nurses, and even everyday citizens, who rushed into the rubble to save lives and add some order to the unfolding chaos.

As we continue to confront the wake of sudden tragedy – the sort that’s plagued South Florida lately – we must remember to put people first.

First, in healing. Be kinder to people, now and always. My dad talks about the “9/12 effect,” the ubiquitous kindness and empathy that could be felt on the day after

9/11 or, more recently, in my hometown of Coral Springs following the Stoneman Douglas shooting.

There’s certainly something special about how we treat each other the best at the worst of times. But there’s also something twisted about it. Why save our warmest gestures and love for the days we hope never happen? Might we not enjoy a better, more cohesive society if we employed empathy as a rule, not just a knee-jerk reaction to tragedy?

We ought to recognize the potential of the people that surround us, from bosses to strangers, fellow drivers and shoppers. If recent tragedies have shown us anything, it’s that the good outweighs the bad, tenfold.

There will always be more people willing to risk their lives than those willing to take lives away, more people running toward a bridge than brushing off signs that foresaw its fall.

People must come first in considerations about the bridge’s failure, too, not just in determining who is at fault but in designing a roadway to prevent tragedies like this from ever occurring.

– so did the University of Miami, before our bridge was built. It’s easy to frame roadway dilemmas as “motorists vs. pedestrians” – until you watch those drivers rush out of their cars to help at a split second’s notice. Finding a way to serve them both drivers and pedestrians as people first (like the cars, bikes and peoplefriendly “woonerf ” that’s to be built in Wynwood) is paramount, instead of continuously seeking out methods that favor the status quo of fast, wide, arterial roads.

Ultimately, though, healing has to happen now, independently of investigations and potential solutions. Whenever you find yourself feeling distressed at the state of the world, at disasters like this one, take a page out of Mr. Rogers’ book: “When I was a boy and I would hear about something scary, somebody getting badly hurt or something like that, I’d ask my parents or my grandparents about it … my mother would try to find out who was helping the person who got hurt. ‘Always look for the people who are helping,’ she’d tell us. ‘You’ll always find somebody who’s trying to help.’”

UM students spearhead March For Our Lives Miami

Eighteen is the magic number.

That is the age when the youngest portion of this boisterous group of young adults leading the national conversation about gun control will be able to vote. University of Miami senior Maya Lubarsky sees that as the ultimate leverage – the people who have grown up in a post-Columbine, post-Parkland world are or will be constituents, and they will be able to hold politicians accountable.

An estimated 4,500 people took to the streets of Miami Beach for March For Our Lives Miami, the event led by University of Miami and Miami Beach Senior High School students. The thousands gathered to advocate for new regulations on gun accessibility and to call on younger generations to make sure elected officials hear their voices at the polls.

“Our generation that grew up with mass shootings, we’re all turning 18, if we haven’t already,” said Lubarsky, a Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School alumna, in an interview with The Miami Hurricane March 23. “This whole group of people are going to soon be voting. You need to listen to your constituents ... Your job is about taking care of the people you represent.”

March For Our Lives Miami was a sister march to the one in Washington, D.C., which was organized by the students of MSD following the Valentine’s Day shooting that left 17 dead and more than a dozen injured and shocked the South Florida community.

On March 24, nationwide and around the world, more than 840 organized marches and rallies took place. The outcry and push for new legislation was born after MSD became the scene of Florida’s deadliest school shooting.

Four MSD alumni, now UM students, teamed up with students from Miami Beach Senior High School to create the Miami Beach march, providing an example for others in their generation to take action against

gun violence.

Lubarsky, a neuroscience major, was one of the four UM students who coordinated the event. Though she said the event is “realistically” not going to change anything immediately, it does send a message to politicians.

“This really shows our country what we – as the young adults and community members – what we want,” Lubarsky said.

UM offered free buses to transport students to the event in Miami Beach.

The ride-sharing company Lyft committed to offering free rides to those attending marches throughout the country. Lyft said it would put a total of $1.5 million toward free rides.

Senior Marisa Goldman, who handed out shirts to the students loading onto the buses at Stanford Circle, said 85 students had registered out of the 100 slots available. Goldman, a 2014 MSD alumna who took the bus to Miami Beach, said she’s not shocked by how the MSD community has responded to the shooting.

“It’s 100 percent expected from Douglas,” said Goldman, a double major in music business and history.

“We are very much taught to say what’s on our minds and fight for what we believe in.”

The march began at 10 a.m. at Miami Beach Senior High School.

There, thousands of participants flooded into the empty parking lots in front of the school with signs taking aim at President Donald Trump, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and the National Rifle Association – names heard throughout the march and rally.

Several of the event’s coordinators and local public figures addressed the large crowd to explain how 6½ minutes, the estimated time it took for 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz to kill 17 people, changed their lives and community forever.

Freshman Makayla Manning, a 2017 MSD alumna, said after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, which killed 58 people, one of her professors at UM addressed the class and said students were the future and responsible for inciting change.

a “flame” in her heart. She said she signed a few petitions but eventually, she began to feel powerless and the “little flame died down.”

She had no idea that in a little more than three months, her hometown and alma mater would become the scene of yet another massacre.

“This time it was not close to home, it was home – Parkland, Florida,” said Manning, a public relations major. “Now there is no longer a flame in my heart but a full-

fledged fire developing alongside the pain.”

Manning told the crowd that when she heard the news of the shooting, she began to shake uncontrollably. Manning said she couldn’t grasp that the very same town she called home, her safe haven, was now the scene of the deadliest school shooting since Sandy Hook in 2012.

Manning, choking back tears as she addressed the thousands at the march, said she knew people who

were directly affected by the shooting even more than she.

“My good friend Robert had both of his beautiful sisters walk into those gates, and one came out,” Manning said. “The families of the 17 victims are broken. My town is broken. I am broken, but we will not be silenced.”

Nearly a dozen speakers took the stage for 30 minutes before the march began. At 10:18 a.m., marchers, lead by the Miami Beach Senior High School marching band, made their

way to Collins Park in Miami Beach for a rally.

There, a slew of other speakers including shooting survivors, local politicians such as Mayor of Miami Beach Daniel Gelber and surprise guests Flo Rida, Emily Estefan and Jo Mersa Marley all took the stage to address gun violence in the United States. Each of the speakers encouraged young people to exercise their right to vote and hold their elected officials accountable.

public figure even apologized for his generation’s inaction.

“I am sorry we have not done enough as a nation to protect the young people of today,” said Alberto Carvalho, Miami-Dade County Public Schools superintendent.

About two weeks after the Parkland shooting, Carvalho turned down an offer, that was thought to be finalized, to become the chancellor of New York City schools. Carvalho said he would stay in Miami-Dade.

taking a cue from the younger ones.

Karen Shamuel, a Miami Shores resident, held a sign that had “Flower Children Support Power Children,” written on it as an homage to hippies and the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Shamuel, a former trauma nurse, said the March For Our Lives movement happening in the country right now led by a younger generation is necessary to create lasting change.

Shamuel said Parkland was what “broke the camel’s back.”

“Seeing what happened to Parkland ... As a country, people are saying, ‘Enough is enough,’” Shamuel said. “This is something I’ve always believed in strongly, for the last 45 years ... We need to stand strong and not accept little bite-sized compromises.”

Throughout the march, hundreds of parents marched alongside their children. Some, with their children on their shoulders, are hoping they’re part of the change that leads to their children coming home safely from school each day.

Allister Roper, a Hollywood, Florida resident, said he made the drive down to Miami Beach in hopes that the march becomes his 1-year-old daughter’s first baby step to political activism.

“You have to get them activated,” Roper said. “You have to have them see that their peers can make a difference, and if they see that activism in their fellow peers, it’ll set them up for the future to stand up for themselves.”

Roper, 49, said the March For Our Lives movement is a “necessity” to change what is “going on in the world today.” Roper compared gun violence and mass shootings to a runaway train that will not stop with politicians not doing anything to derail it.

“Any time something like this happens, it’s just a prayer and moment of silence while there’s no real action,” Roper said. “It’s taken the youths to actually bring this to the forefront, where now you hear people going, ‘OK, if you take money from the NRA, we’re not going to vote for you.’”

While MSD students who survived the shooting are taking the lead nationally against gun violence, Manning said college-aged students should also be involved and lead future generations in the fight. Manning said activists as young as elementary school children have taken part in the movement, but it’s up to college students who are old enough to vote to set an example.

“We can spark interest,” Manning said. “Younger generations should really look at this as their time to spark a movement and realize that they have a voice, no matter how young you are ... You have power, regardless of what they’re telling you.”

Frost Junior Andre Bernier releases first EP

Enter “Where the Light Won’t Reach,” the contemplative, haunting first record from Connecticut native Andre Bernier. A junior jazz piano performance major in the Frost School of Music, Bernier’s talents in multi-instrumentalism, lyrical depth and layering melodies shine through the genre-breaking EP. The Miami Hurricane asked Bernier to give an insider look at “Where the Light Won’t Reach,” which he wrote, recorded and produced almost entirely by himself over this past winter break.

The Miami Hurricane: When were you introduced to writing or playing music, and how?

Andre Bernier: I started taking piano lessons at 4. It was really after hearing Elton John and Billy Joel that I knew this was the career path I wanted to take. I must have been in elementary school, around fourth grade, when I knew for sure. My parents listened to music around the house, and it was always that large, American band sound that I was drawn to – Otis Redding, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin – people in a room, making noise with real instruments.

TMH: How has your time at Frost School impacted your music style or approach?

AB:

Music school can do away with a lot – emotion attached to songs, meaning of notes, expression of chords – but it can give you a lot – technique, organization, reading skills and ability to improvise. There’s a common misconception that music school is supposed to give you your artistry or your sound. It’s not a fair expectation, and it fundamentally undercuts the amount of work involved in selfdiscovery within a craft. What Frost is here for is to give you the skills necessary to find your sound on your own. The institution has shaped the way I play piano, for sure, but it hasn’t shaped the way I compose or create.

What has shaped my composing is the students I’m surrounded by.

Community is everything.

TMH: Which artists are your musical influences?

AB: As far as this EP goes, the main inspiration was Bon Iver, and I think that’s evident from the first track.

I don’t think there’s a better writer in our time than Justin Vernon. His understanding of the movement of chords driving the mood of a piece is something many musicians lack. We get too caught up looking at what’s hip, what’s different. Nothing’s different; all the chords have been used. I’m impressed more and more with music that brings me somewhere, music you can listen to in the dark and it takes you to another time in your life. That’s something that I’ve been looking to emulate for a long time.

TMH: Is there a central theme or story in your EP? AB:

The EP was about experiences I had over break. I went to several museums before recording anything, being home and having nothing to do. The grand scale of artwork at the Met is what inspired the track “1890.” The end of the 1800s had a buzz to it. It was the turning of a century that had seen a slew of economic advancements, and these paralleled artistic advancements. They all had that unwavering focus of a group with the hope of new creation.

I wanted to capture that feeling – I was enamored by it. There’s something so determined about it.

“Avon” is the town where I live now. I’ve lived there since freshman year of college, but it’s definitely home.

I remember Connecticut as gray. That’s the best word for it in every sense – the mood, the people, the routine, everything. It can be destructive if you don’t learn to live in it, let it absorb you and sit inside that fog while being indifferent to it. That song is a reenactment of stepping outside to smoke, being back home on a break from school and just having it hit you all over again. It’s about being back

in that state, that gray, but removed from it at the same time. It’s almost comforting in a strange sense. It’s all a bit melodramatic, but there’s a fair amount of human emotion that sits very finely on that line.

“Condo” is a song I made off a riff in open D that caught my ears. I wrote the first verse driving to visit relatives in New Jersey. It’s about a fictional event where a person sees someone who they used to be involved with, and even though they’re still interested in the person for all the reasons they used to be, both parties know it’s better off not to be involved anymore. The catalyst for the breakup is a fight that resulted in one of the people making a hole in the wall. It also allows the convenient analogy of patching the hole in the wall, just as the non-aggressor has patched the relationship time and time again.

“Vanguard” is my favorite track on the EP. I took a trip to the village Vanguard in New York City with my girlfriend, Alice Kim, who’s also a student at Frost, to see The Bad Plus, a jazz piano trio. The song isn’t so much about that show as it is about the whole city. I’ve found that it’s just too fast for my speed – it’s extremely taxing to be around that many people, that many stories and conflicts. I had to wait in Port Authority Bus Station for two hours until Alice’s bus arrived, and there was a crazy amount of things going on. You have to adapt to look past people when you live in a city; you can’t think about the story behind everything – it will overwhelm you. It took about five, nine-hour workdays to get it all tracked. I’m not sure if I’ll have time to make another track like it anytime soon.

TMH: What was the process of making the EP like? Did you have help from other Frost students?

AB: This EP was made in three weeks over winter break. It was a giant learning process and it was all terrifying, start to finish, quite honestly. I don’t feel at home with technology. I’m used to acoustic instruments.

No one else played or sang on the record, but, oh my goodness, did I ever need help with mixing it. Daniel Loumpouridis walked track by track through these tunes with me – which is not a small feat, either in time or patience – and explained why what I was doing was wrong in most cases.

The artwork came from a photo I took on Christmas Eve outside my dad’s condo in Avon. Alice Kim took it and made it into the incredible art you see on the cover.

TMH: Have you had any noteworthy experiences collaborating with others while at Frost?

AB: Again, it’s the community that matters here, far more than the classes. I’m in a band called Ladytown, which is filled with some of the heaviest writers at Frost. This EP is directly influenced by their style, especially in terms of groove and build. I’ve also been involved with another EP that I made with Daniel Loumpouridis, which should

be released within the next few months. As far as other writers who have inspired me, I urge everyone to check out Carter Vail, Alice Kim, Noah Tauscher, Sara Keden and Zola Johnson. This place is filled with people with things to say, you just have to give them the chance to say it.

TMH: Where do you hope to go in the future with your music?

AB: I’m moving to Nashville after graduation with a bunch of Frost people.

If I’m lucky, I’ll be able to do sessions on piano and organ and promote my EP stuff on the side. I’d love to do tours, as well. I expect I’ll have a day job for a decade or so, but who knows? I don’t really have a master plan with all of this. I certainly didn’t get into music so I could have my life cleanly mapped out for the next 50 years.

Miami completes a series sweep for the first time this season.

Hurricanes complete sweep of No. 24 Cavaliers

Canes baseball finished off the weekend sweep against No. 24 Virginia, defeating the Cavaliers 8-1 on Sunday, March 25, at Mark Light Field. The win marks Miami’s first sweep of the season and first of UVA since 2008.

Led by junior pitcher Andrew Cabezas, UM (12-11, 6-3 ACC) is back over .500 for the first time since starting the season 2-1. Cabezas (2-2), who started the season as a closer and moved into the starting rotation March 18 against Duke, pitched six quality innings. He allowed just one run on three hits and struck out a season-high eight batters.

The Miami Gardens native reached a season-high 90 pitches.

In his past two starts for the Hurricanes, he has a 0.75 ERA. “I’ve always told coach [Jim] Morris that I’ll do whatever he needs,” Cabezas said. “The fact that he gave me the opportunity I’ve been seeking all these years at the University of Miami, I’m just very, very excited.”

Emerging freshman Isaac Quiñones got the Hurricanes going early with a two-RBI double in the first inning. The hit brought in seniors Hunter Tackett from third base and Michael Burns, who beat out the throw to home.

The play extended Quiñones’ hitting streak to 14 games and his multi-hit streak to three games. He leads the Canes with a .392 batting average. The freshman from Pembroke Pines has shown great patience at the plate.

“Fastballs, fastballs inside,” said Quiñones about his desired

pitch. “I just sat back and waited on the pitch I was looking for.”

The early runs kept coming for Miami, and Virginia’s (10-13, 3-6 ACC) defense did not have an answer all day. Seven of nine UM starters had a hit, including freshman Freddy Zamora, who recorded two hits along with Quiñones.

The Hurricanes, who have struggled to maintain leads in previous games this season, effectively closed out the Cavaliers each time they threatened to score a run.

With Miami leading 4-1 in the top of the eighth inning, Virginia had two runners on base with just one out. Redshirt senior Cooper Hammond halted the Cavaliers’ momentum, striking out the first batter and then forcing the next into a groundout to get out of the inning unscathed.

Hammond earned his third save of the season with his performance out of the bullpen.

The Canes put the finishing touches on the afternoon with a four-run bottom of the eighth inning.

After watching Miami blow a lead to FAU earlier in the week, Cabezas said the sweep showed him a lot about the team.

“We’re never going to let one bad game affect us or one bad inning; we’re going to be fighting toward the end,” he said. “We’re starting to connect a lot more – these next couple weeks of games are going to be very interesting.”

The Hurricanes will play an exhibition game against the Miami Marlins as part of their spring training schedule 3:05 p.m. March 27. The Canes will then take on Florida Gulf Coast University 6:30 p.m. March 28 in Fort Meyers.

MIAMI BASKETBALL: A SEASON IN REVIEW

The 2017-2018 Miami Hurricanes’ basketball season will largely be remembered as a rather disappointing one.

While the team and coaching staff fought valiantly through distractions and injuries to finish third in the ACC, Elite Eight and Final Four aspirations turned into a firstround NCAA Tournament exit.

If there is one overarching positive that came from the season, it is the fact that it is viewed as a disappointment. Simply getting to the NCAA Tournament no longer qualifies as a success for Miami, and that is a testament to how head coach Jim Larrañaga and his staff have built a winning program from the ground up in the nation’s best basketball conference.

POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS:

1 ANOTHER SOLID GROUP OF NEWCOMERS Last season, Miami got major contributions from the freshman group of Bruce Brown Jr., DJ Vasiljevic and Dewan Huell, helping to push the team to a surprising NCAA Tournament berth.

This year, freshmen again played major roles, as Lonnie Walker IV and Chris Lykes were among the most important players on the team since day

one. Both battled bouts of inconsistency, but that’s par for the course with players their age.

Walker took some time to get going following an offseason knee surgery, but once conference play hit, he was the team’s best player. He posted 13 doubledigit scoring efforts and became the Canes’ go-to option in the clutch.

UM’s point guard was one of the most exciting elements of the season, and he represents the biggest hope for success next year with Ja’Quan Newton graduating and the likely departures of Brown and Walker IV to the NBA. Everyone loves rooting for the little guy, and Lykes’ electrifying style of play makes it easy to do just that. He’s excellent at changing speeds to get where he wants to on the floor, and there are few who can keep up with him when he chooses to attack the basket. It was his ability to draw

defenses in the paint that allowed him to find open teammates for 3-pointers, an area the Hurricanes relied on heavily to win games.

He shot just 40 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range, but he’s a confident shooter with a good form, so expect those numbers to rise as he continues to gain experience.

Every time Lykes entered a game, he provided a jolt to both sides of the court, and all signs point up to what he will do with added responsibility next season.

RESILIENCY

After Brown went down with a foot injury in January, Miami sat at a 4-4 record in the ACC. The team easily could have crumbled and missed the NCAA Tournament, but the Canes refused to let that happen.

Every player stepped up at one point or another, whether it be Anthony Lawrence II’s 25-point outburst at Virginia Tech or Dewan

Huell’s 16-point, nine-rebound effort against Boston College. It all culminated with what had to be Miami’s finest performance of the season, a 91-88 win at No. 9 North Carolina.

Six Hurricanes scored in double figures, and Newton’s ridiculous buzzer-beater not only capped off a thrilling win but also showed how UM could defy the odds.

NEGATIVE TAKEAWAYS:

1 UNDERPERFORMING MOST OF SEASON With seven ESPN-100 recruits on the roster, many predicted that coach Jim Larrañaga would reach his second Final Four and produce Miami’s best basketball season in program history.

The Canes finished with a solid 22-10 record but lost both of their postseason games.

Expectations were high, and Miami simply could not reach them.

Injuries wreaked havoc on the Hurricanes’ season well before it even started. Just days after Walker arrived on campus, he suffered a torn meniscus that required surgery and kept him out until after official practices began.

Walker then struggled with ankle injuries when games began in November, which decreased his minutes when he could’ve gained

more experience playing alongside his teammates.

These injuries contributed to his relatively slow start and adjustment to college-level play.

The injury bug bit the Canes once again when Brown suffered a foot injury that kept him out for the remainder of the season. Larrañaga often referenced the challenge of playing without Brown during the closing stretch of the season.

2 INJURIES

3 INCONSISTENT SHOOTING The shooting percentages for the season – 46 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range – aren’t terrible, but the game-bygame inconsistency hurt Miami during several stretches. The Canes often were either on fire or couldn’t buy a shot – rarely in between.

For example, they shot 55 percent and 51 percent, respectively, in wins against ranked North Carolina and Florida State, but then shot a combined 35 percent from the field and 25 percent from three during back-to-back losses to Virginia and Syracuse in February.

Miami also only shot 66 percent from the free-throw line for the season, which was a huge issue in nearly all its losses.

4 RECRUITING

Despite going through a two-year period of the program’s best overall recruiting ever, Larrañaga and his coaching staff struck out on the nation’s prospects this year – in large part because of the FBI investigation of bribery that implicated Miami in September 2017.

As of now, the Hurricanes have zero incoming commits and will most likely have to rely on graduate transfers and walk-ons to fill out a roster that could lose as many as five players.

Macedonian freshman builds on tennis prestige in US

It was love at first sight of a racket.

“He watched tennis instead of playing with toys,” Sasho Jankulovski said through a translator about his son’s early childhood.

Miami Hurricanes freshman Bojan Jankulovski was very different than the average kid growing up in Selo Gluvo, a modest village on the outskirts of Macedonia’s capital, Skopje.

Before he could envision himself serving a tennis ball on the clay at the Stade Roland-Garros courts, where he played in the Junior French Open, he could recite the capital city of every European country by the age of 3.

But it wasn’t his impressive memory that would take him on a lifetime of adventures in fewer than 18 years. It was his passion in between the white chalk lines and what he could do with a neon Babolat racket gripped in his dominant left hand.

Like many kids, Jankulovski, the oldest of two sons, grew up playing sports. His parents signed him up for soccer, and he was placed as the last line of defense in goal because of his tall and lanky stature.

But the love for soccer wasn’t there.

That’s when his “majka” Biljana and “tatko” Sasho – meaning mother and father –took him to the local tennis club, called “Jug.” This ended up being a decision that changed Jankulovski’s life forever.

His talent was clear right away.

At 9 years old, he consistently won matches against 12-year-olds. The club victories quickly turned into appearances across Europe and, eventually, around the globe.

At one point, he rose as high as No. 53 in the ITF Junior World Rankings and won 15 International Junior tournaments. He was also nominated to the Macedonian Davis Cup team twice, becoming the youngest player to participate.

didn’t reduce his drive.

While other friends and peers were partying, Jankulovski was studying tennis. The southpaw religiously watched his idol and one of the best left-handed players of all time, Rafael Nadal.

“If you really love something and you want to be successful, you have to sacrifice a lot of things,” Jankulovski said.

His sacrifices continued throughout high school, devoting all his attention to his sport at the expense of his schooling.

“I had a hole in my education,” he said. “I sacrificed my education for tennis. Four years of high school, I was doing nothing. When I came

to Miami, I didn’t know what to do for my major or my classes.”

More than 5,500 miles away from home, Jankulovski was on his own in a new environment but knew he could always turn to someone: Hurricanes coach Aljosa Piric.

“I look at him as my father, in a way,” Jankulovski said about Piric, who is from Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“Whenever I have a problem, I can call him. He helps me a lot, especially at the beginning of the year when I was homesick. I’m really thankful and grateful for him.”

After exchanging popular Macedonian tunes for hip-hop and splurging on the occasional McDonald’s run instead of his

favorite home-cooked tavce gravce – a traditional Macedonian dish prepared with fresh beans, onions and assorted spices – Jankulovski has found his footing.

“Bojan has matured a lot in the last couple months,” Piric said.

“He’s become accustomed to U.S. culture.”

The 6-foot-1, 183-pound freshman has made strides in competition as well. Jankulovski, who declared sport administration as his major after consulting with coaches, is 12-4 in singles matches and owns a 4-2 record in doubles play in 2018.

And despite quickly developing the maturity of a seasoned veteran,

he still likes to cut loose by singing and dancing to his favorite new American songs with his teammates.

“Bojan is a hard worker on and off the court,” senior Niclas Genovese said. “He knows when the time is right to be a clown. He’s a hilarious dancer.”

And while the journey to the United States certainly wasn’t easy, Jankulovski’s parents never doubted their son. They knew he would thrive.

“In order to come to Miami from a country like Macedonia, it’s not easy,” Biljana Jankulovski said.

“We had minimal financial support, but with a huge heart, he made it possible.”

Making time as a busy bae

We’re back from spring break, and there are only a few weeks left in the semester, which means it’s crunch time.

It’s up to you whether to interpret “crunch time” as doing a lot of schoolwork or doing crunches until you literally vomit to get your perfect summer body. For me, it means the latter, but I am a V of the people, so I’ll be lenient with you bookworms.

A semester’s worth of procrastinated work combined with looming exams, projects, internship searches, Grey’s Anatomy marathons, membership of clandestine fandoms, second jobs to pay off secret credit card debt, chronic

masturbation issues, the adoption then immediate return of a miniature schnauzer and all the other bullshit life throws at you means it can be hard to make time for your lover.

It’s important to remember that while you may be stressing about papers and projects, your special someone is likely stressing about the same things, plus about why you won’t text back or hang out with them.

Bailing last minute on dinner plans or a Netf lixand-chill date can seem shady and make your S.O. go from significant to suspicious.

So how do you balance it all?

Sure, a simple “Hey, hope you’re doing OK” could make your bae’s stressful day go away.

Wow, I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it. (I’m so sorry.)

But as I have said again and again, a huge part of a relationship is physical, so a text won’t fix it all. You’ve got to make time for the person you love.

You can schedule study dates, during which you focus for 25 minutes, make out for five and then get back to work, and so on. Just be sure not to get too carried away and forget about that physics exam in the morning.

If solo studying is more your speed, stop by to see your person at the beginning or the end of the day. Losing an hour or two of sleep to spend an hour or two with your love could make things a lot better for both of you.

And if that’s not possible, promise them a special date once the madness is over – a light at the end of the tunnel – to remind them how much of a perfect angel you are. Who knows, maybe you’ll even slip in some natural stress relief (by slipping it in).

It can be tough to balance it all, but a little understanding on each end can make things a lot better. Yes, it’s important to do your best on assignments and stick to your commitments, but if you don’t have any time for love or for things that bring you joy, take a second look at your calendar and prioritize.
