Detectives investigating murder of UM student

Miami-Dade Police homicide detectives are investigating after a University of Miami architecture student was found dead Sunday afternoon.

Yasser Talal Ibrahim Abualfaraj was found “with multiple signs of trauma” inside his apartment in the 6500 block of Santona Street in Coral Gables, Miami-Dade Police detectives said. Police are calling the death a homicide.

A statement from UM Communications identified Abualfaraj, 23, as a third-year architecture student, and said that the school was “deeply saddened” by the news. Abualfaraj is the third University of Miami student who has died during the fall 2018 semester.

“It has been a very tough and sad start to the semester,” said Dr. Patricia A. Whitely, Vice President for Student

Affairs. “We are doing our best to support the entire UM community.”

Architecture classes have been cancelled for Monday Oct. 8, Dean Rodolphe el-Khoury announced to students and faculty in the architecture courtyard shortly after the UM Communications statement was sent.

“A member of our community passed away, and we are taking time to grieve and take care of each other,” el-Khoury said.

A vigil honoring Abualfaraj will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the architecture courtyard.

“He was the first person that said hello to me when I transferred to the school,” said Emily Fusilero, a junior architecture student. “All of our classmates and study mates that hung out with him are going to be remembering him always, and his work. Hopefully some of his work can stay around so we can see the things that he’s made.”

the Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Detective B. Jurado at 305471-2400. To remain anonymous, callers can contact Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471TIPS (8477). Tips leading to an arrest may earn the tipster a reward of up to $3,000.

Whitely said the school is working closely with Abualfaraj’s “fellow students in the School of Architecture to support them during this unimaginable sadness,” and that “Counseling Center staff and chaplains are available.”

The UM community can access grief counselors and support staff through the Counseling Center at 305-284-5511, as well as university chaplains through the Dean of Students Office.

UM responds to racially biased video on social media

The University of Miami is investigating after a Snapchat video, allegedly featuring a UM student using the n-word, circulated on social media over the weekend.

The videos show an alleged UM student making derogatory comments toward African Americans. The student makes racially explicit comments, using the N-word repeatedly and ranting about black Americans receiving punishments and getting “raped” by “plantation owners.”

Students received an email from Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Patricia A. Whitely Monday, Oct. 8 addressing the videos. The message said the Dean of Students Office is investigating the incident, and that the responsible individuals will be held accountable.

“We do not tolerate bias of any kind at the University of Miami,” Whitely wrote.

The videos were originally posted

on Snapchat, but screen recordings also circulated on Twitter. They were viewed more than 7,000 times as of Monday night.

Two videos show several posters hanging on the wall of what appears to be of a room in a UM freshman residential college.

Explicit slurs are heard throughout both videos, and the second video shows the speaker’s face.

Senior Kristin Williams said seeing the video elicited strong emotions.

“I was in shock,” said Williams, a public health major. “I was angry that he would feel bold enough to do such a thing and then post it on social media.”

Freshman Christopher Battist said he was upset and surprised when his friend showed him the video on Twitter.

“The fact that another minority said those racial remarks with such comfort and pride really hurts,” said Battist, a broadcast journalism and political science double major. “As a student at a predominantly white institution, there’s usually a sense of unity

amongst minorities, so these videos came by surprise both emotionally and socially.”

Several members of UM’s United Black Students organization called for the suspect’s expulsion.

“There needs to be serious action taking place, and not just sending out emails to say that it’s being investigated,” said UBS vice president Jori Opara. “If you honestly say as an institution that you don’t condone any type of racism, then don’t condone it.”

Students said the tweets were spread on multiple media platforms such as GroupMe, Instagram and Snapchat. The videos were also re-posted in multiple UM student group chats and personal messaging groups.

UM administrators have not confirmed the identity of the student in the videos. The Hurricane reached out to the student named in the tweet, but did not immediately receive a response.

UM reacts to No. 53 ranking Police chase, crash close

In 2011, The U.S. News and World Report rated the University of Miami as the 38th best university in America, placing it higher than ever before. UM’s ranking has fallen 15 spots since then.

The latest report came out Sept. 10, and UM now stands 53rd, tied with Lehigh University and Syracuse University. Last year, UM was ranked No. 46.

According to the U.S. News and World Report, overall rankings are based on factors that indicate overall academic quality, ranging from graduation rates and class size to alumni giving and faculty salaries.

However, Executive Vice President and Provost Jeffrey Duerk said only a few of the 16 ranking parameters are actually important.

“College rankings have very modest value,” he said. “Most of the data are not a measure of rigor, quality of the student learning... but are really measures of financial resources like endowments.”

This year, socioeconomic factors were prioritized more than in the past, such as graduation rates

among low-income students, but Duerk said that UM’s retention and graduation rates are nearly identical between its lowest-income students and the rest of the student body.

Duerk also said the rankings include outdated statistics.

Although the newest data points were from the fall of 2017, others were almost seven years old, he said.

For prospective undergraduate students looking to compare colleges, national rank can be a key factor in making a final decision.

When critiquing colleges as a whole, many students said they take into account student diversity, academic rigor, campus size and teacher-tostudent ratio.

But Freshman Tej Bhasin said he doesn’t think these rankings metrics are truly indicative of the UM experience.

“A great college should be defined as a place where students can grow as individuals and develop their passions while obtaining new skills through both social and academic interactions,” said Bhasin, a finance and sports administration double major.

UM administrators recently released the details of their “Roadmap to Our New Century”

initiative, which seeks to improve the overall student experience and establish UM as a comprehensive research university.

These plans place more emphasis on STEM resources and call for innovations within academics, specialized programs and campus life, all factors that contribute to a school’s ranking.

Duerk said that implementing these changes will require sustained hard work from UM’s entire campus community.

Regardless of how UM plans to raise its ranking in the future, Duerk said UM should still be ranked higher right now.

“If I took the top 100 from U.S. News and World Report and came up with my own ranking system where you considered rigor, student climate, student experience, faculty resources, the mix of research and traditional learning, lifetime value of the degree, and some other factors, I think I’d have us in the 30s somewhere,” Duerk said.

Bhasin also said UM should be ranked much higher because he thinks it’s one of the world’s premier universities.

“We deserve to be number one on the list because it’s all about the U,” he said.

U.S. 1 near campus

A police chase and crash involving a stolen vehicle briefly closed U.S. 1 near the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus Monday, Oct. 8.

A Miami-Dade police officer attempted to pull over a Honda Element, which was traveling northbound near the intersection of Grenada Boulevard and U.S. 1, police said.

When the officer tried to stop the vehicle, the 16-year-old driver immediately accelerated at a high speed and lost control of the car, police said. The car struck a tree in the median and swerved into the southbound lanes.

The crash backed up northbound traffic on U.S. 1 beyond Red Road, and backed up southbound traffic past Bird Road, according to a tweet from the University of Miami’s Emergency Notification Network.

“I was trying to drive to school and realized traffic was backed up for miles,” said Hailey Burke, a senior sport administration major. “Roads were shut down, cops were directing traffic around the scene down Ponce. It caused me to take so many detours to get to class and resulted in me being late for class.”

The driver and 15-year-old back-seat passenger were ejected from the vehicle and transported to the hospital in critical condition, Miami-Dade Police said. The other passenger was transported in stable condition.

The police officer was responding to a 911 call in the area of SW 83rd Court & SW 78th Street. The caller reported that two individuals were attempting to open vehicle doors, according to police.

A gun was also found at the scene. Police received reports of a stolen vehicle later in the morning, and their investigation confirmed that the missing vehicle was the one involved in the accident.

National Gandhi Day of Service offers students chance to connect with community

The University of Miami’s largest annual service day, The National Gandhi Day of Service, will take place Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offer students a chance to get involved in their offcampus community.

Participants will be bussed to one of 28 South Florida service sites to spend a few hours working hard for the benefit of others. Possible activities include cleaning up local beaches, preparing meals for a veteran’s hospital, doing Halloween crafts at a children’s museum and interacting with nursing home residents.

said that students can expect more than a day of service. She said participants will also gain the opportunity to connect with their community.

“It’s kind of easy to get caught up in the bubble of UM and UM’s campus, but I think it’s important to go out there and meet other people,” said Guido, a senior biology major.

The other co-chair, Tori Diceglio, said that students should take advantage of Gandhi Day to get off campus and learn about the many volunteer opportunities that surround UM. “I think it’s a great way to connect us with the outside local area and to show that we are a philanthropic school and that our students do care about the surrounding areas and helping those who are less fortunate,” she said.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. on the UC Patio and Breezeway. After students sign in and

receive their location assignments, they will get a free breakfast and a T-shirt. They’ll also have the chance to mingle with each other and meet their group leaders before boarding the buses and heading to the service sites.

Once on location, students will spend two to three hours participating in various community service projects. Gandhi Day vice-chair Meghana Chapalamadugu said that although aspects of these tasks can be difficult, they’re worth the effort.

“I mean sure, you get a little sweaty, you get your hands dirty, but at the end of the day, you’re able to bond with a group of people while doing something positive in the community,” said Chapalamadugu, a junior neuroscience major.

Diceglio said Gandhi Day’s name comes from its relationship to the famous political

activist, Mahatma Gandhi. The service day is strategically held within two weeks of Gandhi’s birthday, which is Oct. 2, in order to honor his legacy as a proponent of positive change, Diceglio said.

“It comes from the idea of practicing what you preach and doing what you want to see happen,” Chapalamadugu said.

Diceglio, Guido and Chapalamadugu all said seeing the impact of all their hard work is the best part of any service day.

“I just think that seeing other people really puts life into perspective. It makes you realize how grateful you should be for what we have here,” Diceglio said.

Students can register to participate in Gandhi Day on the event’s OrgSync page. The deadline for registration is Oct. 11.

Self-acceptance helps students overcome unrealistic Miami standards

College can be overwhelming, especially for new students. There are assignments to submit, tests to study for, social events to attend and barely any time for sleep. This constant bustle of college life doesn’t leave much

The prospect of gaining the dreaded “freshman 15” has scared some students so much that they resort to drastic, unhealthy methods of preventing it, resulting in another problem altogether: a sort of “reverse freshman 15.” Today, up to 20 percent of college students claim to have an eating disorder, according to the Walden Center for Education and Research— and in 2011, a University Oregon study revealed that most college students don’t even eat one serving of fruits and vegetables per day. The lack of nutrition is widespread, and multifaceted.

At a popular school such as the University of Miami, body positivity can often be easier

said than done. People often put immense pressure on themselves to look a certain way, to keep up with the glitz and glamour that surrounds them. While the students themselves often celebrate diversity and selfconfidence, the coveted “Miami standard” the area is known for can still be hard to escape.

Overcoming it calls for changes in how we see, and treat, ourselves.

Like any woman in her 20s, I too have felt unhappy with what I see in the mirror. One way I was able to combat unhealthy trends was discovering that how I feel about myself is directly related to the kind of people who surround me. I chose to focus my attention on spending time with the loyal friends in my life that had stuck by me, and less on those who were content letting the friendship fade away.

When I narrowed my inner circle, it positively affected everything in my life, especially how I saw myself. By strengthening friendships with those who genuinely rooted for my success, I became more accepting of my flaws and insecurities, instead of being hindered by them.

Practicing balance and taking the shame out of treating yourself also helps. Something as simple as having breakfast every day can promote body positivity and self-care by giving

the body the fuel it needs to feel and perform its best. According to a 2006 study from Saint Martin’s University, this simple step alone can help students improve their short-term memory retention in classes following breakfast.

Once I began to implement balance in my life regarding food, I felt a huge shift. Academic accomplishments, being a loyal friend, and treating others kindly proved to be much more important goals. It’s still a daily pep talk I give myself, but it has made me happier knowing

that others cannot define me by my appearance because I do not define myself by it.

There is no such thing as the perfect body, and there never will be. I’ve found that it is much better to be happy than perfect. We can reach this happiness by not adhering to society’s unrealistic standards, instead setting our own standards and telling ourselves each day that we’re more than enough.

11 queer films that won’t make you cringe

With the success of “Moonlight” and “Love, Simon,” it is easy to forget that the LGBTQ+ community is still often erased from mainstream entertainment. And, when a movie or show does include LGBTQ+ characters, they’re often used as tokens, having a personality completely developed from stereotypes and little to no storyline aside from being queer.

In honor of National Coming Out Day, observed Oct. 11, The Hurricane is bringing you 11 queer films, in no particular order, that aren’t completely cringeworthy.

Alex Strangelove (2018)

High-school senior Alex Truelove, played

by Canadian actor Daniel Doheny, seems to have everything going for him. He is dating his best friend Claire, played by Madeline Weinstein, and is a strong candidate for Columbia University.

But, when his girlfriend wants to take the “next step”, and he meets a handsome boy named Elliot, played by Antonio Marziale, Truelove embarks on a confusing roller coaster of emotion and self-discovery.

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

17-year-old Meagan Bloomfield, played by “Orange Is the New Black”’s Natasha Lyonne, is the perfect teen girl: smart, a great cheerleader, and dating the captain of the football team. When her parents begin to suspect she is a lesbian, they send her to True Directions, a sexual conversion camp. Here, she meets and falls in love with a girl named Graham, played by Clea DuVall, and things take an unexpected turn.

“Moonlight” chronicles Chiron, a black boy growing up in Miami, on his journey through childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.

Chiron deals with bullies, a drug-addict mother, and the harsh reality of being a gay man. Along with its many other accolades, which include a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama and an Academy Award for Best Picture, “Moonlight” is the first film with an all-black cast and the first LGBTQ film to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

“Pariah,” which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, is a hard-hitting drama highlighting the unique experience of LGBTQ+ people of color. Alike, a highschool lesbian played by Adepero Oduye, struggles with her identity, her parents’ strained marriage, and the disapproval of her homophobic mother.

This LGBTQ+ coming-of-age story centers around Simon, a very average teen with a very average family living a very average life. There’s just one thing no one knows: He’s gay. When his secret is threatened, Simon, played by Nick Robinson, must deal with his own feelings as well as those of his classmates, friends and family, all while keeping up an anonymous online relationship.

Paris is Burning (1990)

This documentary gives a behind-thescenes look at the New York City drag scene and those who brought it to life. Featuring interviews from famous drag queens like Willi Ninja and Pepper LaBeija, “Paris is Burning” shines light on a community that offered refuge and support to those who had none.

Tangerine (2015) Most famous for being shot entirely on an iPhone 5s and premiering at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, “Tangerine” follows transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella, played by Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, on her search for her boyfriend/pimp who broke her heart.

Tomboy (2011)

Laure, a 10-year-old girl played by French actress Zoe Héran, moves to a new neighborhood and is quickly mistaken for a boy. Laure then begins introducing herself as Mikäel, successfully presenting as a male with the help of her younger sister Jeanne, until her mom finds out and makes her wear a dress in public. Laure’s life begins to unravel as she deals with her classmates and crush finding out her true identity.

The Way He Looks (2014)

Based on the 2010 short film “I Don’t Want to Go Back Alone,” “The Way he Looks” follows Leonardo, a blind teenager played by Ghilherme Lobo, as he falls in love with Gabriel, a new boy at school played Fábio Audi. He struggles with wanting independence from his overbearing parents, bullies, his relationship with his best friend, and his new feelings for Gabriel.

Princess Cyd (2017)

A 16-year-old girl, eager to escape life with her single father, visits her aunt in Chicago.

UM alumna and her former professor earn praise at two-piano show

As part of the Frost Music Live Signature Series, Gusman Hall hosted an Evening of TwoPiano Music with Tian Ying and Anastasiya Naplekova, Saturday, Sept. 29 Crowds of people gathered outside of the box office in anticipation of an aesthetically stimulating night. Upon entering the concert hall, it became apparent that this performance was more than just a piano concert.

While at its core a faculty recital featuring highly esteemed faculty artists and students, the performance added another element of artistry when guest pianist Anastasiya Naplekova took to the stage with her former professor, Dr. Tian Ying, to partake in eloquent renditions of some of the world’s most famous two-piano masterpieces.

Starting together with a single breath, Naplekova and Ying were two voices melded into one, both playing technique and dramatic flair.

Embodying the intricacies of each separate movement of Mozart’s Sonata in D major for two pianos, the pianists wowed the suddenly still crowd with their technical and theatrical prowess.

While Mozart is known for technically challenging masterpieces, Naplekova explained after the performance, each graceful and timed touch of the keys proved that this virtuoso pianist had a reputation of not only embracing challenges, but also exceeding expectations.

Introduced by Frost professor Santiago Rodriguez as “illustrious village-taught Anastasiya”, Frost alumna and doctoral recipient Naplekova quickly became the pianist to watch. The talented and passionate musician has been a soloist with multiple orchestras as well as the recipient of international awards in Ukraine, Poland and Morocco, and has recently earned her degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

When asked how her experience at UM shaped her career, words such as “wonderful atmosphere” and “excellent education” came to Naplekova’s mind as she reflected on her time at UM with Dr. Rodriguez.

Her mentorship with Rodriguez was one of the main reasons Naplekova decided to come to UM to cultivate her passion for piano, and it became one of the hallmarks of her artistic past.

As the night progressed through Schubert and onto Rachmaninoff, Naplekova’s specialty, the players

showed no sign of fatigue as they climbed to greater and greater heights of technical wizardry – all while maintaining a captivating stage presence.

Erin Engel, a 10th-grader at Riviera Preparatory and a prospective Frost student, had never been to a Frost show before tonight, but left wanting more.

“She was incredible, it was a treat to watch [them] perform,”

Engel said.

Pride for the Frost program was clearly not in short order that evening.

Just as the pair approached the last few triumphant chords of Rachmaninoff ’s Suite for 2, the audience prepared to shower the pianists with thunderous applause and bouquets of roses. Given a standing ovation for about five minutes after their final bows and exit from the

stage, Ying and Naplekova blissfully returned to the stage for an encore.

The pair once more showcased their individual personalities while serving as messengers for the dramatic and enveloping themes of the masterpieces they brought to life with their playful licks which culminated in sophisticated phrases.

UM defeats FSU at home for first time since 2004

Florida State appeared to have buried No. 17 Miami. The Hurricanes trailed 27-7 with 11:52 remaining in the third quarter after a 74-yard punt return touchdown by the Seminoles’ D.J. Matthews.

Then it happened.

Miami forced three turnovers and scored 21 unanswered points including a game-winning, 41-yard touchdown pass from N’Kosi Perry to Brevin Jordan to defeat Florida State, 28-27, Saturday Oct. 6 in front of a raucous 65,490 fans at Hard Rock Stadium.

“No one lost heart,” Hurricanes coach Mark Richt said. “There’s no doubt Florida State created doubt in everybody’s minds...But nobody gave in. It just took a spark and that spark turned into a flame and we got the lead and we found a way to finish the game.”

The victory was Miami’s first win at home over Florida State since 2004, snapping a six-game losing skid. The Hurricanes have won backto-back meetings and lead the alltime series 33-30.

“During halftime, Jaquan Johnson and all of us let each other know that we needed a turnover,” linebacker Michael Pinckney said.

“That chain has powers. Tonight was a testament of that. It was just momentum, the change in the game.

Once that chain came out, things started to turn around and we had the opportunity to do something great.”

First, safety Sheldrick Redwine bolted through Florida State’s offense line and stripped quarterback Deondre Francois. Fifth-year senior Gerald Willis III scooped up the loose ball to ignite the Hurricanes’ sideline.

“That was huge because we needed that chain to get us going,”

said defensive lineman Joe Jackson, who tied a career-high with two sacks. “That changed our momentum in a huge way, and in these game, momentum will take you far.”

Perry connected with Lawrence Cager for a 3-yard receiving score, cutting the deficit to 27-14 with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter.

Two plays later, the Hurricanes’ defense struck again.

Pinckney picked off Francois to set up Miami’s offense inside Florida State’s redzone.

With one throw, Perry pulled the Canes within one possession. The redshirt freshman quarterback found standout receiver Jeff Thomas—who battled a knee injury throughout the

game—for a 17-yard touchdown grab.

Miami (5-1, 2-0 ACC) scored two touchdowns in a 42-second span, jumpstarting the elated Hurricanes faithful onto their feet.

UM took its lone lead of the night when Perry heaved a 41-yard touchdown to Jordan over the top of the Seminoles’ defense.

“The one to Brevin, that was the perfect look, the perfect play call for the defense they were in and it worked out perfect,” Perry said.

The Ocala, Florida, native finished his second career start 13 of 32 for 204 yards and four touchdowns.

“I didn’t ever get down on myself,” Perry said. “I know I missed

a couple open targets, but at the half I wasn’t pouting, I was smiling because I know I make those throws every day. It wasn’t anything I couldn’t come back from.”

Francois, who threw for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, just tallied 20 yards after the intermission. The redshirt junior completed 15 of 30 passes and notched two touchdowns and one interception.

The Seminoles (3-3, 1-3 ACC) seemed to regain the lead with a 39yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but the officials called back the scoring sequence, flagging Matthews for an illegal forward pass on a trick play.

“He threw it in front of him,” said FSU coach Willie Taggart, after seeing the video replay. “I thought it was good.”

Miami held Florida State to 200 yards and finished with six sacks, 12 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. Preseason All-American safety Jaquan Johnson — who returned after missing two games with a hamstring injury — registered a team-high 10 tackles.

“It feels amazing, especially with the slow start we had and rallying in the second half to get the W,” Johnson said.

The Hurricanes next play on the road against the Virginia Cavaliers, 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Scott Stadium.

Miami receiver suffers career-ending injury

“This is not easy to swallow, for anybody,” Hurricanes coach Mark R icht said. “We’re just thankful that he’s going to be able to lead a very productive life and that there’s nothing catastrophic as far as how his life will not cha nge d ra mat ica l ly f rom a physical standpoint, as much as it is from being a ballplayer to not being a ballplayer.”

Richards hasn’t appeared for Miami since sustaining a knee injury in UM’s 33-17 loss to LSU Sept. 2.

It remains unclear how or when the Wellington, Florida, native hurt his neck.

“We’re sad that it’s over, for his career,” Richt said. “But we’ll love him up, take care of him and I know he’ll do well in life because he’s a sharp kid.”

Richards thanked the Canes’ training and medical staffs, as well as UM’s coaches, for their support.

“I’m extremely appreciative of t he Un ive r sit y’s at h le t ic training and medical staffs for diagnosing this injur y, and to the football coaches and staff for always putting my health first,” said R ichards, in a statement released by Miami. “I plan to continue working towards my degree at UM and look forward

to the next chapter in my life.”

The for mer 6 - f o o t -1, 192-pound receiver played in 22 games, including 19 starts, for Miami over three seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 74 catches for 1,382 yards and six touchdowns.

The former four-star recruit chose Miami over offers from Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Auburn, among others.

He received an outpouring of suppor t on socia l media, including from Hurricanes tight end Brevin Jordan.

“I remember when I f irst got here during the summer and [used] to watch you and was shook watching first-round talent before my eyes,” Jordan wrote on Twitter. “[You’re] a savage bro, on and off the field. God got a plan for you my guy just trust his plan.”

Richards’ injury marks the second career-ending injury for the Hurricanes in the last year.

Malek Young underwent careerendi ng su rger y on h is neck following Miami’s 34-24 loss to Wisconsin in the 2017 Orange Bowl.

“All these guys, they’re not my sons, but in a lot of ways they’re like my sons,” Richt said.

“We like to treat our players the way we would treat our own sons, our own children. As a staff, one of our big philosophies is that. So, when anything happens with your own child you grieve for him. It’s not easy to swallow for anybody.”

SOCCER Miami had both highs and lows throughout its two-game road trip.

The Hurricanes fell behind 2-0 against the Pittsburgh Panthers heading into the halftime break, but freshman forward Gudrun Haralz had other plans.

Haralz notched her first career hat trick, leading Miami to a 3-2 victory. Haralz became just the second Hurricane to notch a second-half, hat trick, joining Laura West Aug. 30, 2000, against West Virginia University.

On Sunday, Oct. 7, the Louisville Cardinals dominated the Hurricanes 3-0 at Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium.

Once again, Miami (5-7-2, 2-4 ACC) trailed 2-0 at the intermission, but the Canes were unable to rally.

“We’re obviously disappointed in the way we played today,” coach Sarah Barnes told hurricanesports.com “There were a number of unforced errors that led to their goals and goal scoring opportunities. We have to be committed to playing our game, regardless of the pressure or opponent.

When we’ve done that this season, we’ve played very well. When we stray from it, we struggle. I have to do a better job of bringing the team along and demanding that buy-in, game in and game out. We are capable of a much better performance than what we saw today.”

Louisville outshot Miami 18-1 in the match.

The Hurricanes will look to get back on track against No. 11 Boston College 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at Cobb Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL

Hurricanes volleyball remained undefeated at home in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

On Friday, Oct. 5, Miami defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels, 3-1. UM handled UNC in four sets, 25-20, 25-22, 15-25, 2518.

Senior outside hitter Kolby Bird tallied a team-high 16 kills. Freshman phenom Chloe Brown registered a double-double, finishing with 12 kills and 21 digs.

On Sunday, Oct. 7, Miami sent the North Carolina State Wolfpack home packing with a 3-1 win. The Hurricanes put on a defensive showcase with 14 blocks on their way to a 25-18, 25-21, 15-25, 25-21 victory.

Next, Miami visits the Syracuse Orange 7 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Manley Field House.

GAME ON TO WIN $10,000 MEET PRO GAMERS:

MEN’S TENNIS Sophomores Bojan Jankulovski and Adria Soriano Barrera lost their matches at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championship.

No. 41-ranked Soriano Barrera fell 4-6, 4-6 to No. 50 Alex Brown. Soriano Barrera trailed in the opening set, 1-5, before winning three straight games.

After three consecutive victories in qualifying rounds, No. 92 Jankulovski earned a spot in the tournament against Wake Forest’s Bar Botzer. The No. 91-ranked Botzer clinched the 2018 NCAA Team Championship for the Demon Deacons.

Botzer grabbed the first set, 6-2, but Jankulovski didn’t go down without a fight.

The southpaw squeaked out on top in the second frame, 7-5.

Jankulovski had a 5-2 advantage in the final set, but Botzer mounted a comeback bringing the match down to a tiebreaker.

Botzer defeated Jankulovski, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) and advanced to the next round of the tournament.

WOMEN’S TENNIS No. 3 Estela Perez-Somarriba was upset by No. 103-ranked, Oklahoma States’ Katarina Stresnakova, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 3-6, in the opening match of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.

Despite the defeat, Perez-Somarriba wasn’t finished in the tournament.

The 5’5” Spanish sophomore defeated Wisconsin’s Sara Castellano, 6-4, 6-1, crowning her the winner of the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships singles consolation draw.

“Estela did what she had to do when she had to do it and was very coachable [in regards] to making changes when she needed them,” Miami associate head coach Laura Vallverdu told hurricanesports.com. “Her mental game is improving every day and she is believing in the routines more and more.”

Perez-Somarriba is the second Cane in the past three years to win the back draw competition. In 2016, Sinead Lohan also earned a medal by winning the consolation tournament.

For those of you new to the U, you may not remember that V’s Take actually used to be called Dear V. Instead of me ranting about my personal life, we responded to your letters, pushing the limits of what could be said in a college publication.

It’s been more than two years since someone actually emailed us, but now we can make like Steve from Blue’s Clues and say, “We just got a letter! Wonder who it’s from?”

Hey V, I am a junior at the University of Miami but I am in love with a freshman. I think he knows that I like him a lot but I’m not sure. I don’t know if he is into me or if he thinks that I’m too old for him. What should I do?

Freshman Feelings First off, you’re welcome.

Second off, it’s been years since I’ve actually responded to a letter, so brace yourself for some questionable advice, Freshman Feelings.

I’m missing a lot of information about your situation, but I’ll give it my best. Do you

hang out with the freshman you want to f**k or are you creeping from afar? Is this a gay thing? Why do you think he knows that you like him?

Regardless, age is just a number – and besides, a two year age difference is no big deal. I try to get attention from 40 year old men when I’m lonely, so don’t sweat it.

It’s important to remember that it’s this guy’s first semester at school. As much as you want to hold tie him down (in a kinky or non-kinky way), he is going to want to experience college and make all of those first-year mistakes.

Some people, like myself, want to get wifed up, and maybe he’s one of them. My advice – go for it, or you’ll regret it.

Good luck, and I expect an invitation to the wedding and for that wedding to have an open bar. I will be bringing two plus-ones and will not be bringing a gift.
