Michelle Obama speaks on campus, encourages audience to vote

In the final stop of When We All Vote’s Week of Action tour, former First Lady Michelle Obama spoke Friday at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center. Her goal was simple: to encourage every person there to go out and vote.

Freshman Juliette van Heerden said she decided to go to the rally as soon as she heard that Obama would be there.

“I have always had so much respect for who she is and what she’s accomplished,” van Heerden said. “The fact that she was coming to the University of Miami to talk to us was so exciting.”

When We All Vote is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization created to spark conversations about civic rights

and responsibilities, with an emphasis on increasing voter registration. But even though Obama is a co-chair, she said she’s not telling anyone who to vote for.

Instead, she said wants to change today’s dangerous cycle of frustrated people who get angry at the current political system but do nothing to change it.

“Some folks think the whole system is rigged, so why bother at all?” Obama said. “I get it. I get being busy. I get being frustrated.

I’m frustrated, too.”

But Obama said that this frustration and disdain for the status-quo should motivate people to head to the polls, not keep them away.

“Voting is a fundamental right,” Obama said. “It is the only way in our democracy to have a say in the issues we care about. Essentially, it is our stake

in our children’s future.”

She told the crowd that even in the 2008 election, when voter turnout was at its highest, more than 80 million didn’t exercise their ability to vote. In midterm elections, turnout is typically even lower, with less than 40 percent of eligible voters showing up at the polls.

Obama said that low voter turnout results in underrepresented populations, because only a small percentage of people are choosing who will represent the entire community.

“As a citizen, wouldn’t you want to be absolutely positive that those elected officials are looking out for all of us and not just a small percent?” Obama said.

She said that people shouldn’t leave it to others to decide who will represent them in government.

“You wouldn’t give your

crazy uncle the power to post a picture to your Instagram feed, so why would you give a stranger the power to make far more important decisions in your life?”

Obama said.

Other speakers at the rally delivered similar messages, including former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, gospel singer Erica Campbell and “Key & Peele” star Keegan-Michael Key. Asides from the speeches, sophomore Anastasia Cafatti said her favorite part was that Obama was dressed in jeans and a T-shirt.

“It makes you feel much closer to her, even though she might be at a much higher level in terms of the power she holds,” Cafatti said. “I believe that through this, she was trying to make a point that we are all people, and every single one of us is important, therefore every

vote matters.”

Isabella Aires, a junior from Brazil, said that even though she can’t vote in the United States, Obama’s speech inspired her to get involved in Brazil’s upcoming elections.

“I wasn’t sure if it was worth voting,” Aires said. “Now I know I will vote.”

Freshman Ishaan Chatterjee said she was also inspired by the event and that although she was already planning on voting, she didn’t think about the importance of her vote until Obama began to speak.

“I have never felt so genuinely inspired to do something before,” Chatterjee said. “Much love for the Obama family.”

The voter registration deadline in Florida is Oct. 9, and the 2018 midterm elections will take place on Nov. 6.

Student launches website to help others stand out to employers

For students looking to stand out in today’s competitive job market, UM senior Mark Akhimien said he has a solution.

Akhimien, who is majoring in marketing and business technology, developed a website that students can use to create virtual business cards with links to their resumes, LinkedIn profiles and other attentiongrabbing webpages.

Users can create profiles at OneTopic, where each personal page has a matching QR code that potential employers can scan with their phone cameras to easily access all the necessary information.

“It’s hard to stand out when there are 100 kids doing the same thing,” Akhimien said. “Now, I’m the one kid who shows up with my phone.”

Akhimien said that technologically-advanced business cards can help students

make a good first impression and allow them to stand out in a crowd of other applicants with similar qualifications, especially at career fairs and other open events.

“I believe that early adopters of my product will have the advantage of using something that’s fresh and new, something that will make another company look at this student and be like ‘alright, I know he’s a forward thinker because he has something that everybody else doesn’t’,” Akhimien said.

Akhimien’s friend, David Ufberg, said he’s a big supporter of the project.

“I had always known that Mark was very entrepreneurial and very driven, but when I first saw the actual demo and first saw the functionality, I was really impressed,” said Ufberg, a senior economics major.

Akhimien said he got the idea for a paperless business card while he was working as a sales representative. He said that he got so many business cards

that he just tossed aside without being able to connect faces to names. Now, with OneTopic, employers can see a much more personalized profile that directly connects a student’s face to their credentials.

According to Akhimien, entrepreneurship is all about finding solutions to problems.

So when he noticed the ineffectiveness of conventional business cards, he created an alternative.

“He’s always been looking to solve problems, and that’s something that’s really inspiring to me,” said Ufberg.

Sophomore Alexandra Pinnata said that she thinks paperless business cards sound like a great idea.

“It’s definitely something that will move forward the exchange of information,” said Pinnata, a music education major.

“I feel like normal business cards are sort of outdated now.”

Pinnata said she’d consider using OneTopic the next time she’s applying for jobs because

she realizes that it’s hard to stand out in a world with an increasing amount of college graduates.

“It’s definitely a lot harder to get ahead now,” she said.

Akhimien said he wants to help driven and passionate students who are looking to break into the professional world, regardless of other advantages they may or may not possess.

“Those are the characteristics that helped me get to where I am today, and I want to share that advantage,” he said.

Akhimien credits his time at the Loyola School, a prestigious high school in Manhattan, as an experience that gave him the confidence necessary to create OneTopic.

“It showed me I was capable,” Akhimien said. “It was the first time I was able to prove that I could do something longterm for myself. Since then, I’ve just had the passion and drive to continue.”

Akhimien said that he’s a proud Cane and that he hopes other students will take advantage

of OneTopic. He said that he wants as many of his fellow Canes to sign up as possible.

“I want them to let me help them,” he said. “I think it would be mutually beneficial.”

Former UM professor dies after hit-and-run in Coconut Grove

Former University of Miami professor David Hertzig died Saturday as a result of injuries he sustained after being struck by a hit-and-run driver Sept. 24.

Hertzig, 85, was biking through Coconut Grove, on his way to teach a class at Miami Dade College, when a man driving a blue Jaguar ran into him near Southwest 37th Avenue and Charles Terrace.

According to police, eye witnesses reported that the driver got out of his car and made a quick phone call before fleeing

the scene.

The suspect has not yet been identified, but witnesses said he was a white man with gray hair, a receding hairline and a height of about 5 feet 10 inches. He is thought to be in his 50s or 60s.

Hertzig was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s trauma center, suffering from multiple broken bones, a torn artery and a detached lung.

He remained in critical condition for six days before succumbing to his injuries.

Hertzig served as UM’s department chairman of mathematics from 1970-1976 and graduated from UM’s law school in 1978. Although he wasn’t currently teaching classes at UM, Hertzig remained

a member of the emeritus faculty.

Stephen Cantrell, the current chair of the department of mathematics, said Hertzig was a “distinguished algebraist” and a “versatile individual.” Hertzig’s passing has deeply saddened his friends and colleagues in the math department, Cantrell said.

“Professor Hertzig always projected a real joy in living,” Cantrell said. “We will miss him.”

Now, his family is calling for justice and asks community members to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the hit-and-run driver.

National Association of Black Journalists coming to UM in January

Starting in January of 2019, the National Association of Black Journalists will have a chapter on the University of Miami’s campus for the first time ever.

Morgan Threatt, the president of UM’s chapter of the NABJ, said the club’s mission is to provide a space for students of color to share their ideas and network with media professionals who look like them.

“We want to band together as like-minded individuals and grow

as journalists, media influencers and as a family too,” said Threatt, who is a sophomore majoring in broadcast journalism.

In addition to facilitating on-campus collaboration and initiatives, Threatt said UM’s chapter of NABJ also aspires to give back to the community of Miami Dade County.

The organization plans on reaching out to younger students who have a passion for writing, hosting workshops to help the next generation of journalists expand their skills and running a backpack drive to benefit underprivileged schools.

NABJ members will also have the opportunity to participate in media internships, special panels and information sessions. As a community, club members will hear from reporters at the local and national level.

Freshman broadcast journalism major McKenzie Stoute said she wants to join NABJ so that she can become a better writer and reporter. She also said she wants to network with other media professionals, especially those who she can relate to.

“In the black community, it’s good to have support from people

who look like you and share the same struggles,” Stoute said. “I want to utilize my knowledge and skills to collaborate with other journalists and gain new experiences.”

Sophomore Tre’Vaughn Howard, the vice president of UM’s chapter of the NABJ, said he believes it’s important to bring NABJ to campus because minority groups are often underrepresented. He pointed out that other South Florida universities, such as FIU, already have NABJ chapters.

“I feel that this club will make the university more

collaborative and structured,” said Howard, who is double majoring in broadcast journalism and political science.

The next NABJ annual conference will be held in Miami. The leaders of UM’s chapter of the NABJ said they plan on attending this event with other members in order to create connections, pave careers and collaborate on a larger-scale.

In the weeks leading up to its launch, the NABJ will announce specific meeting times and dates.

UMPD teaches self-defense classes to female students and faculty

The University of Miami Police Department employs 1,863 security cameras and a 24/7 patrol service in order to minimize danger on campus, but the organization also encourages people to take personal safety into their own hands.

On Wednesday, Sept. 26, the department held a free self-defense class to further the protection of female students, faculty and staff.

Two Self-Defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange certified instructors taught the victim-prevention course: UMPD employees Bryan Rodriguez and Latoya James. They said the main focus of the class was empowering women to build up the mental and physical skills necessary to defend themselves in dangerous situations.

“I’m doing this because I want you to walk with a purpose,” said Rodriguez, who is a security systems technician for UMPD. “I want to make you all aware of your true potential.”

Rodriguez and James said they volunteered to teach the class because they thoroughly believe in the importance of providing women with potentially lifesaving information.

According to the 2018-2019 UM Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, in 2017 there were 12 cases of rape, 15 of fondling, 17 of dating violence and 16 of stalking on the Coral Gables campus.

Although the data does not indicate the gender of the victims, Rodriguez and James said women must always be ready to protect themselves against an attacker.

“The class really opened my eyes to how assault can happen to anyone, said Junior Sofia Portillo, a health science major on the pre-medical track. “I need to be more prepared.”

The instructors said the first step to self-defense is prevention. They emphasized the importance of being able to detect unsafe situations and knowing the signs of a threatening individual.

Participants learned crucial survival tips, such as using eye contact to appear more confident, pre-planning for an attack in suspicious situations and constantly staying alert in new surroundings.

Although these techniques reduce the risk of an altercation, Rodriguez said they would not be sufficient in the event of an attack. So, participants spent a significant amount of time learning physical defense techniques.

Rodriguez and James demonstrated a stable defensive stance and taught students how to deliver effective palm and crotch

strikes.

Junior Lauren Flaumenhaft said she thought the class was very helpful.

“I think any girl on campus who wants to feel safer or at least more informed about practicing self-defense should absolutely take part in the class,” said Flaumenhaft, a creative advertising major.

Portillo said she feels more confident in her ability to protect herself.

“I now feel like I can handle myself better if something were to happen and I’m happy I took the class to gain that insight,” she said.

The UMPD also offers a free selfdefense course for men and a more indepth self-defense class for women called RAD, Rape Aggression Defense. More details can be found on UMPD’s website at https://umpd.miami.edu/services-andprograms/self-defense-programs/index. html.

This semester, SAFE will be offering additional classes from 5:30-7:30 PM in Eaton Residential College on the following dates: Oct. 10, Oct. 24, Nov. 7 and Nov. 28.

The story of how Fox news stole my dad On the rare occasions that my dad and I talk politics, it becomes clear to me where he’s getting most of his political information. He sounds like the

Columnist My dad is a 44-year-old Cuban immigrant, a classic conservative, a “small government guy.” Although I’ve always understood that my parents are Republicans, they aren’t that politically involved nor are they the kind of people to bring up hotbutton issues at family gatherings.

My father, especially, has always been a man of few words, joking that he “rarely loses the opportunity to stay quiet” (and advising me to do the same, although I rarely listen).

Given his personality and political profile, it’s been shocking for me to see him evolve into a slightly angrier version of his previous political self. He approaches current events with a newfound degree of hostility that I’m completely unfamiliar with.

Most recently, when discussing Colin Kaepernick and his appearance in the Nike commercial, my dad, smiling, told me he’d be boycotting Nike but that he wouldn’t burn the sneakers he already owned.

Although he made this known to me jokingly, the sentiment behind his comment was real. Five years ago, my father would have scoffed at the thought of boycotting anything for something so trivial.

What happened? How does a classic conservative gravitate toward the sometimes populist, radical messages that Fox News promulgates?

The problem with Fox News may not necessarily lie in the fact that it is a partisan news organization, but in the perception of its audience that they are receiving unbiased information.

Political commentary is inherently influenced by the

political views of the commentator.

Tucker Carlson, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham present what they believe to be important news stories, and opine on them. This method is informative (or so we think) and undoubtedly entertaining.

This phenomenon occurs on both sides of the spectrum and leads to a kind of confirmation bias, where liberals watch liberal commentators, and conservatives watch conservative commentators, reinforcing what they already believed.

A 2014 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center concluded that Fox News viewers tend to be more ideological than those of CNN or MSNBC. 60 percent of Fox viewers describe themselves as conservative, 23 percent as moderate, and 10 percent as liberal.

CNN viewers were identified as 32 percent conservative, 30 percent moderate, and 30 percent liberal.

Viewers of MSNBC—which is commonly criticized for having a strong left-winged bias—were 32 percent conservative, 23 percent moderate, and 36 percent liberal.

I can speculate that these percentages have changed since the last election cycle and that the viewerships of Fox, CNN and MSNBC have become increasingly polarized. Fox News Channel has been the most watched news channel in the country for more than 16 years. So, they’re doing something right. After all, they did sway my dad.

Fox’s success likely has a lot to do with how painfully entertaining it is. Although I could not disagree more with people like Sean Hannity, he’s an animated, almost caricaturesque man. He’s convincing and straightforward. In our increasingly progressive and liberal world, Fox News provides a safe haven, a bubble for those who refuse to catch up.

Many viewers—my father included—believe that Republican values are being assaulted. Gay people can get married now and universities are breeding grounds for communists. To Fox News

commentators and viewers, it is more important than ever to make conservative voices heard.

This message resonates with people who feel disenfranchised and ignored by politicians, particularly by Democrats. My dad tuned into Fox for sound conservative commentary, stayed for the entertainment, and ultimately bought into right-wing (sometimes fringe) talking points.

Fox has become the loudest Republican voice, but pimping out your party for the sake of ratings is inherently damaging to its viewers.

Flashy talking points or salacious stories shouldn’t always be the priority.

To be fair, this is a pitfall of Fox, MSNBC, CNN, and most other major news outlets. The media’s relative silence on Yemen’s civil war, for example, speaks volumes.

The United Nations’ humanitarian agency reported last month that 22 million people require assistance, 2 million are displaced and 8.4 million don’t know where their next meal will come from as a result of this conflict; while Tucker Carlson found it more relevant to mock women’s and gender studies as an academic discipline (which coincidentally happens to be one of my majors).

Since the 2016 presidential campaign, our politics have become increasingly nasty and partisan (although this is just an uptick in a trend that started years ago). Some conservatives and most Trump supporters feel rejected by news channels that are critical of the current administration (like CNN and MSNBC), so they turn to Fox News.

While other news organizations talk about the Mueller investigation, arguably to an excessive degree, Fox covers “reverse racism” and Hannity rants about America’s “soft coup” by the deep state… groundbreaking.

Meanwhile, a study by Alvin Chang of Vox found that from 2015 to 2017, Hannity mentioned more conspiracy theories than every other news program by a wide margin.

Conspiracy theories were mentioned more frequently when Trump was going through a scandal.

My father’s conservatism has been hijacked by the polarized political climate, and Fox News has been the primary tool used to drag him over to the dark world of conspiracy theories and silly boycotts.

Many of Fox’s issues are similar to those of the other news outlets: sensationalizing news stories and selective coverage.

Trump supporters find comfort in people like Hannity and Carlson, who support the administration in spite of overwhelming evidence that our democratic institutions hang in the balance.

After all, it must be nice to ignore the fact that our president, who is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice, opts to call it a “witch hunt” instead.

Liberals and conservatives alike need to escape their media bubbles and come up for air—to find out what’s happening in the rest of the world—especially for those who have been watching Fox News for the past few years.

In the Trump era, Fox news has been a vehicle to continue dividing us, using its entertaining commentators to appease those who don’t want to keep listening to negative coverage of the administration. It’s dangerous

for our democracy and bad for my sweet dad.

Focus on the victims - not the politics

As controversial headlines sweep the nation, another victim’s trauma is turned into a political battle.

We see these cases every day. A man is accused of sexual assault and people wonder what will happen to his future. A woman is assaulted and her life ripped apart, only for her trauma to be thrown in her face.

I don’t want to talk about Brett Kavanaugh. I don’t want to discuss how he could have potentially attacked a 15-year-old girl while they were students. I don’t want to reflect on the fact that this Supreme Court nominee also belonged to a fraternity at Yale that carried around flags of women’s underwear, the same fraternity that had been banned from campus after their 2011 chant became, “no means yes, and yes means anal.”

This banter has become socially acceptable, in a world where disrespectful boys become disrespectful men.

Whether Kavanaugh is found innocent or guilty, the performance of the “boys club” is still seen as tolerable behavior, and as a society, our response to these headlines unfortunately proves this right.

Perhaps recounting “bad boy” behavior isn’t the correct

way to get the point across to the masses. Maybe discussing a flag of underwear carried across campus isn’t hard-hitting enough, because “it’s just a joke,” a joke that we deem okay to make in our society.

I think it’s time we start talking about the victims.

Christine Blasey Ford, 51 years old. A professor at Stanford University. Ford uprooted her life and moved to California, happily married, raising two sons and living out a quiet existence. Ford only felt that she had to come forward when she saw that her attempted rapist would be appointed to the Supreme Court. She could not imagine putting that much power in the hands of a man she recounts attacking her.

Since Ford has come forward there have been articles published on websites such as PJ Media, with titles like, “How to ‘Christine Blasey

Ford-Proof ’ Your Son.” These posts referred to Ford as a “duplicitous, lying woman,” before she had even had a chance to testify in court. Do we discuss victims of attempted murder or robbery in this same way?

Why is it that, when it comes to a woman’s sexual trauma, we question the victim rather than the assailant?

There are thousands of sexual assault cases that have been reported and taken to court with the outcome still being in favor of the man’s future.

Brock Turner, then a 20-yearold Stanford University student, raped an unconscious woman on the school’s campus and was released after six months in county jail.

Amber Wyatt was raped in 2006 by two athletes. According to The Washington Post, Wyatt reported the rape to adults that night, and to police the next day, only to have her town turn against her and help the

“boys get away with it.”

Abby Honold, a University of Minnesota junior, “immediately called 911, went to the hospital for an exam, and reported everything to the police” after being raped, only for her rapist to go free on early release, according to The Star Tribune.

These cases should not be turned into a battle of liberals vs. conservatives. These cases should bring light to the way we handle women’s trauma. Victims should not be blamed for trying to put their attacker behind bars. They should not be blamed for taking their time when coming forward because of all the injustice before them.

Let us not call victims “guilty,” while they are reporting the crime.

UM professor takes home first Emmy Award

The University of Miami’s campus is crawling with talented people, students and faculty alike. It has journalism teachers who have written for the New York Times, music students skilled enough to score gigs at festivals like Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival, art students whose work could hold its own next to that of any of the greats, and Carlos Rivera, Assistant Professor and Director of the Musicianship, Artistry Development, & Entrepreneurship program who has written scores for projects including Universal Pictures’ “A Walk Among the Tombstones” and more recently Netflix’s “Godless.”

“I was the director’s guitar teacher 13 years ago,” Rivera said, explaining how his decadeold relationship with Scott Frank turned into the opportunity to write the music for “Godless.”

He explained how at the time, the student was a screenwriter, and years later, Rivera began helping him connect with composers to write for the his projects. “It was never supposed to turn into this.”

Well, it’s a good thing it did. On Sept. 17, Rivera came to the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards an unassuming nominee, but left a winner of his first Emmy award for the show’s theme music.

“I was involved very early on from the script stage,” Rivera said of his creative process for creating the music. “So, I was writing music as a reaction to the screenplay. Some of these pieces that I wrote were around the set pieces- the

battle sequence, the duel, etc.- and really around characters that I gravitated towards.”

He explained that he wrote the theme music, which won the award, at the very beginning of the project and that, to his surprise, it did not change much throughout. “Using my music, the director was inspired to set up certain scenes certain ways, and to me, that’s a dream come true.”

Rivera celebrated his win initially at the Governor’s Ball and later at the Netflix Creatives Awards after party. He recalled how cool it felt to celebrate with a lot of the famous people he grew up watching. “I took some pictures, but I didn’t post them because that’s, like, a very personal moment,” Rivera said.

For Rivera, winning the award was bittersweet because he was not able to share the moment with someone who had supported him from the beginning. “The lady who took me through it, the PR lady who we worked with, she passed away like three weeks ago of cancer,” Rivera explained.

“Early on, when we started the whole campaign process, she said ‘you know I’m sick; you may want to work with someone else,’ and I said ‘no way; we’re doing this all the way,’ because I had been working with her since ‘Among the Tombstones,’ and she had said back then ‘you know what would make me happy? If you got a nomination.’”

Rivera ultimately got two.

“As a kid, you have all the fantasies of getting nominated for an Oscar, nominated for a Grammy, or nominated for an Emmy,” he said of the moment he heard his name called. “I never would have dreamed- certainly when I was writing for Godless, the furthest thing from my mind was

any kind of award. The only thing on my mind at the time was not getting replaced.”

Rivera had a few words of advice for anyone who wants to break into the field. “Establish as many relationships as you can now with young directors, with people that are making things…that usually is a much better creator of opportunities than anything else,” Rivera started. “You think that if your music’s good enough, someone will discover it, but the fact is no one will and no one really cares about what you’re doing. You’re the

only one who really cares at this point, so you have to be your own advocate.”

As for what is next for Rivera, he says that even though he would love to work with the same director again, he is completely happy where he is.

“What I’m doing at school, I love. What I get to do, this thing outside of school, I love, too. There’s not, like, a stepping stone on any of the things I’m doing towards something better. You know, this is as good as it gets for me.”

Game of Thrones Experience hits Sunrise

The magic of Westeros returned to South Florida with “Game of Thrones” composer Ramin Djawadi, a full orchestra and South Carolina choir, special effects and exquisite costume designs.

The Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience hit the BB&T Center in Sunrise for the second time on Sept. 22. Djawadi, along with the orchestra and choir, performed songs from all seven seasons of “Game of Thrones,” highlighting the most memorable scenes from the show on a big screen behind them.

“Enjoy yourself, have fun, and if you see your favorite character, your favorite villain, your favorite scene, I wanna hear it,” Djawadi said at the beginning of the concert.

The audience obliged, cheering and booing at characters as they appeared on the screen.

Loud exclamations, such as “Shame! Shame!” on Cersei Lannister or “King of the North!” for Jon Snow, filled the arena and united GoT fans.

“I hope that this is a good holdover until we get the next season,” Djawadi said during the performance.

Djawadi, a German-Iranian composer who won his first Emmy Award this month for GoT, also scores HBO’s science-fiction hit “Westworld” and Amazon’s brand-new “Jack Ryan.” He plans to start working on music for GoT’s eighth season after his tour that overall includes 21 shows in North America and two in Canada.

While performing, Djawadi shared with fans some insights of scoring the series. He said that while working on the show, he writes music to picture, meaning he gets to see new seasons way before many others. However, the process of creating one of the themes for the house of Lannisters, “The Rains of Castamere,” was different from other songs. Djawadi shared how David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the showrunners, called him while shooting the second season of

the show and asked him to write a new theme with lyrics from George R. R. Martin’s book. “‘We’re gonna set this new theme up in season two, and then by the time, in season three, when we come to the now infamous ‘Red Wedding,’ that theme will play there, and then everybody will know ‘wait a minute, that’s the Lannisters, that doesn’t belong here’,’” Djawadi recalled of their conversation.

The audience at BB&T Center not only relived the “Red Wedding” along with other famous scenes from the show, but could also almost feel the cold of Westeros’ winter with simulated confetti-snow when the story moved to the North or the heat of dragon flames every time Daenerys Targaryen said “Dracarys.”

Various costumes and decorations, such as picture-moving stages or a “flying” violinist Molly Rogers, with an extremely long dress and rose petals falling on the stage, were quite remarkable, too.

Music, of course, still remained the key factor to the full GoT world experience.

“What I really enjoy about writing music for ‘Game of Thrones’ is that I get to use a lot of unusual and ethnic instruments,” Djawadi said.

Aside from the common orchestra instruments, the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience featured Indian tabla, Armenian duduk, didgeridoo and hammered dulcimer, as each of them is crucial for different themes of the show. For instance, hammered dulcimer, which Djawadi played himself, is a frequently occurring instrument in Arya Stark’s theme “Needle.”

The Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience was more than just a concert; it became a fun get-together event for South Florida fans of the show, many of whom cosplayed their favorite characters or donned their favorite GoT merch.

FSU writer breaks down Seminoles, predicts UM win

Mark Richt and the No. 17-ranked Miami Hurricanes have plenty of momentum riding into their annual matchup with rival Florida State. The Hurricanes (4-1) are winners of four straight games and are coming off a 47-10 victory over North Carolina.

FSU (3-2), led by Willy Taggart in his first season at the helm of the Seminoles, are poised to upset the Hurricanes after some early season struggles.

The Miami Hurricane sat down with FSView and NoleGameDay sports writer Haylee Blitch to preview the showdown.

The Miami Hurricane: Five games into the season, how would you

describe the feelings and morale among the Florida State students and fanbase?

Haylee Blitch: Coming into

the season, students and fans were beyond excited. The way coach Taggart handled the offseason, it felt like this was going to be an amazing year where nothing could get in FSU’s way.

The 20 minutes before the opening game against Virginia Tech was the most exciting thing I’ve ever been a part of. The dancing, the hype music, the atmosphere, the fireworks and everything else was unexplainable.

Then all of a sudden, FSU wasn’t doing great and people got mad. Really fast. The students and the fanbase were upset because they had such high expectations, which is unfair for a coach who has never coached or played in the ACC. Things have calmed down after

winning a few games, but people were not thrilled with the coaching at first. There are high expectations for FSU football every year, but fans need to give the coaching staff and team time to figure out what will work in the ACC.

TMH: Why do you think the Seminoles have struggled? What has been the biggest weakness for Florida State?

HB: The biggest weakness is

obviously the offensive line. Letting up big tackles and hits on Deondre Francois won’t get you anywhere, especially not in the end zone.

FSU has significantly improved in just five games, but it’s going to be a while before they’re “great”.

This offensive scheme is also completely different. Last year, Florida State scored a majority of touchdowns due to the run game, and now it seems like it’s all passing.

TMH: What are your thoughts on the Turnover Chain and the Turnover Backpack?

HB: I’ve always loved the

Turnover Chain. It’s great to motivate the players after a turnover.

Maybe a little too expensive for my taste, but whatever works.

The backpack is cool. I don’t like that it’s copying the Turnover Chain, but motivation is important.

FSU could’ve done a “Turnover Spear” or something cooler, but if it “gets them in their bag” and gets them to make big plays, the backpack works.

TMH: Miami snapped a sevengame losing streak to Florida State with a 24-20 win in Tallahassee last season.

How do you think this year’s contest shakes out and why?

HB: The attitude going in for

FSU students and fans is a sense of anxiousness. Knowing Miami hasn’t won at home against Florida State since 2004 is a big plus, but really anything can happen.

When it comes down to it, you can throw the rankings out because it’s a huge rivalry game and it’s going to be the best game on all week no matter what the rankings are. Florida State will play harder than ever knowing they have the chance to take down a ranked opponent and rival.

Miami has a strong defense coming off a six-turnover game.

Florida State will have a great game where they learn a lot, but come up just short. It’ll be a nail-biter, but Miami’s defense is too talented.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Oct. 6 at Hard Rock Stadium. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.

UM ties program record in ACC-opening win over UNC

Mark Richt knew who would start under center for Miami’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener against North Carolina.

But the Hurricanes’ faithful found out when N’Kosi Perry ran onto the field for Miami’s first drive, which was met with a roar of cheers.

However, it was the Hurricanes’ defense — which entered the game ranked second nationally in total defense — that stole the show.

Miami’s defensive unit tied a program record with three touchdowns and forced six turnovers to lead the No. 16-ranked Hurricanes to a 4710 victory over the Tar Heels at Hard Rock Stadium Saturday, Sept. 29.

The last time Miami scored three defensive touchdowns was Sept. 23, 2000 at West Virginia.

“It was a sight to see,” defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said. “We always say turnovers, they seem to come in bunches. Once the first one came out, guys were pouncing and making plays. The fact that we could turn defense into offense on those was quite a sight.”

Drive after drive, Diaz’s defense swarmed North Carolina’s offense, finishing with three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 14 tackles for loss.

The Hurricanes (4-1, 1-0 ACC) held the Tar Heels (1-3, 1-1 ACC) scoreless across the final three quarters.

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora tried to shuffle Nathan Elliot and Chazz Surratt at quarterback, but Miami contained the Tar Heels’ offense.

score touchdown. In the second quarter, fellow junior defensive lineman Joe Jackson picked off Surratt and returned it 42 yards to the house.

“Well, the first thing is, we made a position change,” Richt joked. “Joe Jackson is now a tight end. That was pretty spectacular.”

Yet, the Hurricanes’ defense wasn’t done.

Jhavonte Dean intercepted Surratt in the closing minute of the first half for Miami’s third takeaway to set up a 28-yard field goal from Bubba Baxa to put Miami up 33-10 heading into the locker room.

Romeo Finley joined the party with an 83-yard, pick-six touchdown to open up the fourth quarter, before Bradley Jennings Jr. closed out the defensive

showcase with a fumble recovery late in the contest.

Miami scored 21 points off of those six takeaways to lessen the load in Perry’s first career start.

The redshirt freshman completed his first five passes before finishing 8-of-12 for 125 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

“It was good, but it can always be better,” Perry said, who found out he was starting several days before kickoff. “Always room for improvement.”

Redshirt senior Malik Rosier, who had started 17 consecutive games, relayed signals on the sidelines rather than directing the Hurricanes on the field.

“He was disappointed,” Richt said of Rosier. “He showed

class, though. He had his head in the game and he was doing a lot of the signaling and things of that nature. I saw him talking to Kosi about things that were happening in a positive way. He was trying to be a good friend and a good mentor and it’s not that easy to do that. I spent my whole life behind a guy named Jim Kelly.

It’s not fun to be in that position.

I understand the feeling, but he showed a lot of class. I was proud of him.”

Perry received help from the Hurricanes’ two-headed rushing attack of Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas.

Dallas notched a careerhigh 114 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Homer tacked on 88 yards on the ground.

“Travis is my mentor and I

really look up to Travis because he does everything right,” Dallas said. “It’s really just a vet and a semi-vet trying to become a vet.

That’s how we complement each other. He leads me and I lead the other guys.”

Miami will return to action against rival Florida State 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Hard Rock Stadium.

“We take everybody seriously, so we’re excited,” Garvin said. “It’s always a serious game versus us. It can be something versus somebody else, but versus us, they’re going to bring everything, everything they have, everything they don’t even have, they’re going to bring it to the table. We have to be on our P’s and Q’s and really do our thing.”

Hurricanes pick up victories heading into October

Led by a 5-under-par, 66, by sophomore Kristyna Frydolva in the final round, UM finished fourth at the 2018 Schooner Fall Classic.

“The talent is there, it’s just a matter of putting it all together at the right time,” coach Patti Rizzo told hurricanesports.com.

“We obviously needed a warmup, but luckily they found themselves pretty fast. I’m glad we leave again next weekend while they are hot. Very proud of them all.”

Miami posted a three-round score of 19-under at the Belmar Golf Club.

Fr ydolva placed four th overall individually for her first collegiate top-10 finish. Senior Dewi Weber wrapped up the tournament five under, placing 13th overall.

Soccer

Freshman forward Gudrun Haralz scored in the 33rd minute to lead the Miami Hurricanes to their first ACC win under first-year coach Sarah Barnes.

After Haralz’s goal, UM’s defense shut out Syracuse the rest of the way to earn the 1-0 victory Saturday at Cobb Stadium.

“I don’t think tonight was the best that we have played, but we executed,” Barnes said. “We executed in both boxes, which has been a problem for us. There have been too many games where we conceded a goal that I thought we were capable of stopping.

I thought there were a few that we should have put a way, but we didn’t...We were able to execute on the goal tonight.”

The Canes stand at a 4-6-2 record overall and 1-3-0 in the conference.

Miami will look to extend its win streak against Pittsburgh 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

Swimming & Diving Redshirt sophomore diver Alicia Blagg finished first in both springboard events, and the Hurricanes overcame an early deficit to defeat Florida International University 165133 at home Saturday morning.

“They showed a lot of heart,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw told

hurricanesports.com. “We talk a lot about our pool being a special place, and I think they embraced that. They owned that.

I knew FIU was missing some of their important swimmers as well. I think it was great. Both teams had to step up and I’m proud of our team.”

FIU won the first event of the meet, the 200-medley relay, and captured two of the top three places in the 1,650-yard freestyle. But Miami answered with threestraight top finishes in the following events to defeat the Panthers at the Whitten University Center Pool.

Sophomores Sydney Knapp (1:52.87), and Carmen San Nicolas (1:53.28) finished first and second in the 200-yard freestyle before freshman Maria Artigas Fernandez (1:53.73) rounded out the sweep.

Miami next competes in Dallas, Texas in the SMU Classic Oct. 12-13.

Hurricanes sophomores Pablo Aycart Joya and Tatsuki Shimamoto took over on the final day of the Bedford Cup, posting an 8-1 victory Sunday to win the Flight 2 doubles title.

The pair went 3-0 over the course of the weekend.

Volleyball Miami dropped its first ACC match of the season to No. 8 Pittsburgh, 3-0, Friday, Sept. 28.

With the victor y, the Panthers remained undefeated and advanced to 14-0.

The day I have been dreading has finally come: I have run out of people to swipe on Tinder. I have run out of people to swipe on Bumble. I have run out of people to swipe on Hinge.

Same goes for JSwipe (I’m not Jewish but am willing to convert for attention), FarmersOnly, sugardaddymeet.com (no, I didn’t see that guy who wanted to 3-D print guns) and all of the other oddly specific dating websites and apps.

Okay, perhaps I am being just a little dramatic. But still, my apps – and bank of options – are empty.

I’ve come to the terrifying realization that I think I may have to try to meet someone in person.

But how will I make someone like me, someone who does not overanalyze prepared messages and FaceTuned photos of me?

I’ve hooked up with people I’ve met in person in the past, but as I’ve said before, I want something that lasts more than one night (and something that won’t leave me lusting after someone with no interest in me).

It’s especially hard here in the 305, where everyone just wants to get drunk and smash and dash. The Grove and Wynwood aren’t the perfect places to find a husband.

Oh, I’m also extremely gorgeous and sexy, but extremely socially awkward.

That means when I’m out and trying to meet people I’ll need to drink to calm myself down. When I drink it means I’ll get too drunk.

When I get too drunk it means I’ll get all horny and end up going home with someone I shouldn’t.

When I go home with someone I
