SENIORS AND THEIR STORIES The countdown clock is ticking in real time on the University of Miami’s commencement website, where five small circles display the number of weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining before the Class of 2018 leaves that special place on “Biscayne’s wondrous shore.”

As they prepare one last time for final papers, exams and presentations, many seniors are in full wrap-up mode. Four long years, they say, seem to be ending quickly now that the finish line is in sight.

“This semester has gone by so quickly that I feel like I need to start saying goodbye to my classmates and friends,” said Tyler Cianciulli, a senior marketing major, who plans to return to Islip, New York, to start making “some money” and go to law school.

Matt Weinman said he has been relaxing and trying to spend as much time outside as possible, usually by the pool at his house with his roommates.

“I’m much more of a chill kind of guy than a go-out-and-party-everynight type of guy,” Weinman said.

“So I’ve just been living it up like that, finding little pleasures in still living in

Miami.”

Weinman said he also plans to be gainfully employed and will work with his father in Atlanta at a real estate investment company the two started a couple of years ago. The motion pictures major also created his own production company, New Renaissance Films, which features “socially responsible” videos.

Weinman’s production company demonstrates how he is taking his own “unique value contribution” into the job market, advice that Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Thomas Friedman gave to the class during the New Student Convocation in 2014.

Before entering the job market, many other seniors will head back to school for higher degrees.

Serena Sweet, who has a double major in neuroscience and anthropology, will attend Vanderbilt University to pursue a Ph.D. in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in biomedical and biological sciences.

Sweet said she wants to become a professor, a career track she decided to follow after doing private tutoring in the Coral Gables area and working in the Child Readiness Lab in the

psychology department, where she participated in doing pre-school assessments.

“These experiences have shown me that I want to pursue a teaching career, as I love to share knowledge and find it extremely rewarding to help people reach that ‘ah-ha’ moment,” Sweet said.

The accompanying profiles of 14 seniors highlight some of their “aha moments” at UM – people, events, struggles and victories that took them from August 25, 2014 to May 11, 2018.

Their personal defining moments coincide with national and global events that also defined their four university years, including a hashtag culture promoting all sorts of phenomena – from #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo to #PokemonGo. But likely it will be the “Go, ‘Canes” slogan that will linger longest.

“I’ve had the time of my life here at UM,” said Marcus Riley, who is completing the School of Architecture’s five-year program.

“Overall, I wouldn’t have picked another school to go to.”

Senior majoring in humanities has no regrets

At a time when STEM subjects are getting a lot of attention and attracting an increasing number of majors, Annie Louk said she couldn’t be happier that she majored in a subject she loves – English literature.

The 22-year-old student has struggled with the stigma of being a humanities major at a time when STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and careers are being emphasized. Louk, who also has a Spanish minor, initially thought her interest in the humanities might be misplaced.

“As an avid reader throughout high school, I was really insecure about majoring in English because all of my friends were STEM majors, and a lot of people think humanities majors are

useless,” Louk said. “But after taking a couple of classes here, I did not regret it. If you like something, you shouldn’t doubt it.”

But it is not that Louk could not be persuaded to consider other majors.

“I started taking criminology classes for a cognate, and I liked them so much that I added the major,” Louk said. “Something I tell everyone is to major in whatever you’re passionate about because, otherwise, what’s the point in doing something you don’t like?”

While Louk does not regret majoring in English, the interest she developed in her criminology major led her to her career choice. She is planning to attend law school in the fall.

Sixth time is the charm for senior when picking major

By the time he was a sophomore at the University of Miami, Matt Weinman had switched majors from environmental science, to environmental policy, to economics, to computer science, to business technology and finally back to economics. He wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing with his life.

Weinman, who had transferred from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, still felt as bored and unfulfilled as he had before transferring. He knew he needed a change – he just wasn’t sure what.

That summer, Weinman went on a two-month trip to South Africa through CISabroad, a study abroad program that provides education programs and job opportunities for students looking to study in foreign countries.

Weinman selected Cape Town, South Africa.

“I love scuba diving, rock climbing, surfing – I grew up in California, so I do all that stupid outdoors stuff,” Weinman said. “And Cape Town is like Mecca for all of that.”

Just before his departure, Weinman received an email from CISabroad asking if he would be interested in a filmmaking scholarship that would allow him to choose between $300 and a new GoPro. “They were like, ‘So you’re really into filmmaking, right?’” Weinman said. “And at this time, I wasn’t at all; I only had it written down as a hobby on my resume. But I said, ‘Yeah, definitely,’ anyway.”

Easily choosing a GoPro over cash, Weinman took his new camera and prepared for his summer abroad in Cape Town.

He interned at the Sacawazi Women’s Hub, “a safe place” in an impoverished community, where women are taught skills such as sewing, weaving and harvesting food.

Weinman was asked to make a one-minute video of his trip for CISabroad. He came back with three eight-minute videos.

made by an amateur filmmaker. He featured his hike to the top of Lion’s Head mountain at sunrise, skydiving, camping in Cederberg National Park and a trip around the rural areas of the Eastern Cape.

“In addition to making videos for CISabroad, I made a video that the Sacawazi Hub used as a way to get funding,” Weinman said. “That was really cool to me because that was the first time the majority of the people in the video had ever seen themselves on a screen.”

It was then that something finally clicked for Weinman that never had with environmental studies or economics. He had found what he was good at and what he liked, “and kind of where those two overlap.”

“I’ve realized that I love going out and doing stuff and taking videos, but at the same time, I’m more of a behindthe-scenes kind of guy,” Weinman said.

Post-Africa, Weinman entered his junior year as a motion pictures major – and it was the last time he would ever change his course of study.

“School was really just fun from then on out,” Weinman said. “It was a long road to get there.”

After graduation, Weinman is moving to Atlanta to work at the real estate investment company that he and his father started two years ago. Weinman also created his own production company, New Renaissance Films, which sponsors influencers who do “socially responsible work” and produces their videos.

Kuwaiti native ‘breaking boundaries’ for BUCKETING THROUGH ‘SENIORITIS’ women while attending UM

If living the American dream means having an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination and initiative, Kuwaiti native Hanya Al-Khamis said she “got the full package” at the University of Miami.

At age 18, Al-Khamis received a scholarship from the Kuwait Ministry of Education to study journalism at UM. An education in the United States was something her parents had always encouraged her to pursue for the many career opportunities that could open to her.

Al-Khamis credits UM for her ability to think about these aspirations and for the confidence she has obtained, helping her actually pursue them. Because of that, she has dreams she is considering “all at once.”

“I want to be a fashion designer,” Al-Khamis said.

“Maybe I will be the next Anna Wintour, the minister of foreign affairs or the CEO of my own company in the communications realm.”

Al-Khamis said she hopes to return to Kuwait and use the skills she’s gained in the United States to encourage people in her country to push a few boundaries.

“Why not go back and change and make society think?” she said. “I do not want to change it because it is bad. I want to change it because we need people who are aspiring to be more than they think and are told they can be.”

That includes changing the way Kuwaiti society views women. Al-Khamis said she’s “breaking the boundaries” that are expected, such as getting married, establishing a “home” and having kids.

“I can be the next CEO while being married,” she said.

Face of SG looks back on leadership

Even before arriving on campus, Adrian Nuñez reached out to a friend involved in Student Government at the University of Miami, asking how to get involved.

“It was one of those things that, coming into college, I knew that I wanted to do already,” said Nuñez, who was involved in Student Government and president of his senior class at Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami.

Nuñez started his work with UM’s Student Government on the Freshman Leadership Council, then the Senate. He leaves his alma mater as the outgoing SG president.

“It’s been really interesting to see what the administrative side of our university looks like and getting to form some relationships with them,” Nuñez said.

Hurricane Irma presented an unexpected and difficult task for the SG president. However, Nuñez said he was committed to keeping students informed and the campus resilient.

A commuter student all four years at UM, Nuñez said

getting involved on campus – especially in leadership roles – forced him to learn how to plan his day.

But the pros of “going home to family, living in my own room and eating homecooked meals” outweighed the “cons of the commute” – including South Florida’s grueling rush hour.

Although Nuñez said he is excited to graduate, leaving his favorite place won’t be easy. That’s why he’s considering returning to UM for a master’s degree in public administration.

“If I come back, there’s a whole other year for change and progress,” Nuñez said.

Bucket lists and senioritis. The two go hand in hand for many University of Miami seniors during the spring semester, especially during the last weeks, days and hours at their soon-to-be alma mater.

Many are putting up valiant and not-sovaliant efforts to fight off the deadly senioritis virus with multiple notes to self: “Get up,” “Go to class,” “Write the paper,” “Study for the ‘final’ final.”

Michael Batey, a senior majoring in software engineering, said being a commuter student only weakens his resolve to fight senioritis.

“As a commuter student, senioritis hits hard when you wake up for class late and you live in Hialeah, 30 minutes away from campus,” Batey said.

Many seniors said they are experiencing emotions laced with laziness, nostalgia and a fear and excitement of what’s to come next. However, Chantel Acevedo, a professor in the English Department who teaches creative writing at UM, said students should not be too hard on themselves if they don’t always succeed in fighting off the senioritis bug.

“I don’t think seniors at UM are actually lazy, they just struggle with managing everything on their plate,” Acevedo said.

“Having to manage time between classes, internships they are currently working or missing class for an interview opportunity, there are a lot of factors that play into senioritis.”

Antonio Espinoza, a senior finishing his degree in business law, is trying to stay focused.

“Since I’m taking 18 credits this semester, there hasn’t been much room for slacking in school,” said Espinoza, who is from Honolulu. “The only senioritis I have is putting off assignments for one class to work on a project I have in another class. At this point, I just want to graduate and be done with the stress of school.”

Outside of class, students said they are trying to get last UM experiences in by working on their bucket lists. Seniors are scrambling to see a performance at the Ring Theatre, visit the arboretum, check out the Lowe Art Museum and get a selfie at the iconic U statue near the bookstore.

As the academic year enters the home stretch, senior Anisha Clay has one specific item in mind to check off her bucket list.

Clay, originally from Chicago, has attended plenty of UM baseball games at Mark Light Field but has yet to indulge in one of the stadium’s famous milkshakes.

The wait time in line for a “Mark Light Milkshake” can get to be more than an hour.

“I know the last thing to do on my senior bucket list is simple, but it’s something every UM student needs to experience,” Clay said. “I can’t believe I haven’t had one yet.”

Some seniors, including Cole Stockstill from Germantown, Tennessee, said they have accomplished their campus bucket lists and are now focused on their South Florida lists. The last thing Stockstill said he wants to do before he enters the serious world of jobseeking is to go skydiving.

For senior cheerleader Grant Coffman, a Dublin, Ohio, native, time is running out for him to attend an infamous yacht party in Miami Beach.

“I’ve accomplished almost everything on my bucket list in the past year,” Coffman said. “The one Miami thing I still have to do before I leave is party on a yacht like you see in the DJ Khaled videos.”

UM basketball player Mike Robinson did some “pretty bucket list” things this past year, including playing a game in the American Airlines Arena and competing in the NCAA tournament.

Although playing on the same floor as Dwyane Wade and formerly LeBron James is a “once in a lifetime experience,” Robinson still wants to experience a Heat playoff game from a different perspective – in the stands.

“I’m making it happen, no matter how much homework I have,” said Robinson, who is from New Britain, Connecticut.

“Now that Wade is back, it’s a must.”

Wade returned to play for the Miami Heat in February after a two-year stint away from the Magic City. He was signed twice during those two years to the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Senior Xanthi Katsigiannis, a public relations major from Greenwich, Connecticut, said she spent the majority of her time in college stressing about her grades. Now, she worries that maybe she spent too much time hitting the books instead of the beach.

“Throughout my senior year, I’ve wanted to focus on doing as many fun activities as possible to experience as much Miami culture as possible, like visiting the Vizcaya Museum or even spending more time at the beach with my friends,’’ Katsigiannis said.

“Now that graduation is less than a month away, I’m beginning to stress about what I’m doing with my life more so than my classes.”

However, not everyone has a “to-do list” set in their minds before they walk across the stage on May 11, such as Hunter Tackett.

Tackett, an outfielder on the UM baseball team, said his bucket list is nonexistent.

“Am I supposed to have a bucket list?” said Tackett, a Knoxville, Tennessee, native.

“I don’t have one. Never have.”

Music therapy helped graduating senior overcome battle within herself

Danielle Lowe plugs in her headphones to her cellphone and puts on Kesha’s “Praying,” then “Learn to Let Go” – two songs that remind her of how she overcame a struggle with bulimia following her first semester at the University of Miami.

Unable to focus on her schoolwork, Lowe became concerned.

After the semester ended, she was determined to get help. She underwent treatments and therapy. The process and the people who helped her led to Lowe’s “ah-hah” moment.

“I struggled finding out what I wanted to do,” Lowe said. “I knew I wanted to help other people because those who helped me changed my life. I wanted to do something with music, since I loved songwriting, and, naturally, the two kind of came together.”

Lowe discovered that UM

offered a music therapy major.

Pushing herself, with the help of her voice coach, Lowe applied to the Frost School of Music, and a new journey began.

“I think that had an impact on me finding myself and getting better,” Lowe said.

Describing herself as “just a girl with a guitar,” Lowe writes indie-pop music, channeling her emotions into songwriting. Lowe’s favorite artist is Kesha, someone who has openly discussed her own battle with eating disorders in the past. Lowe said, like Kesha, she writes songs that reflect on personal experiences and are transparent about challenges people experience.

“I wrote this one song called ‘Softer’ that really means a lot to me,” Lowe said. “I worked on it for such a long time, and basically, it’s about putting on a tough front but feeling soft on the inside. I was really happy with the message I

communicated with that because facades are something we all have.

Being transparent in my music is really important to me. I want people to reach out.”

Danielle Lowe, 22, is majoring in music therapy. Lowe, who is from Los Angeles, plans to become a board-certified music therapist and work in mental health.

Senior accepted into UM Law

at Villanova University, but the transition was not easy.

“I wanted to go out a lot to meet new people since I transferred, which I did, and it took me away from my schoolwork,” Cianciulli said.

At the end of his sophomore year, Cianciulli met with Miami Business School Senior Advisor Karen Donno to schedule classes for junior year.

She told him something that made him feel like he was letting himself and his whole family down: “Your grades are not good enough for you to get into law school.”

Cianciulli thought his world was crumbling and that all of his efforts and all-nighters had been pointless.

“Those words really hit me,” he said.

After a year and a half of hard work, studying and test taking, Cianciulli recently was accepted to UM Law, where he was awarded a half-tuition scholarship, but will be attending Touro Law School. He said he also was accepted at four other law schools with full scholarships.

Grateful that he made the remarkable academic turnaround, Cianculli credits Donno for the cold dose of reality.

“If she didn’t say those words to me, I don’t think I would have ever changed my ways,” Cianciulli said.

Tyler Cianciulli, 21, is a marketing major with a double minor in management and coastal policy. He is from Islip, New York, and will be attending Touro Law School in Long Island, New York. He also will become marketing director at Atlas Asphalt, the family business.

Senior finds love in research

In fourth grade, Serena Sweet was assigned to do a report on the respiratory system, but after reading her textbook, she became interested in the nervous system. With both areas vying for her attention, Sweet did what any budding scientist would do: a paper on each topic.

Learning more about the sciences would be a habit that Sweet would continue into her high school and college years as a neuroscience major at the University of Miami.

Sweet, who is from Mims, Florida, a small town of about 9,000 people on the eastern coast of the state, said going to Miami would be “a huge deal and quite a culture change.”

But it was a given.

“I knew that UM had an amazing neuroscience program, and it was the only university in Florida at the time that even had a neuroscience program,” Sweet said.

“So it has been my dream school since middle school, and when I was accepted and visited, I fell in love.”

Sweet also fell in love with the opportunities to do research and work with UM professors.

“One of the most important events that has shaped my time at UM has been being involved in the HHMI Program here, where I was able to take additional courses that included hands-on labs and cool seminars,” Sweet said.

The program, funded through a $1.5 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, started the same year Sweet came to campus in 2014. UM was one of 37 research universities to receive the five-year grant, designed to help schools improve how science is taught. The goal is to retain students

in the STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – disciplines.

Sweet said she thought her major would lead to a career in medicine, perhaps as a neurosurgeon, but that all changed during her sophomore year after she took “Core Laboratory Techniques” with professor James Baker.

“At the time, I was moving away from my original path of being pre-med, questioning what I actually wanted to do and slightly panicking that I wasn’t 100 percent sure what I wanted to do,” Sweet said. “When I took the course, I found that research was my passion.

I had no idea what real research and personal experimental design involved, and with Dr. Baker’s help, I was convinced that research is what I want to pursue.”

The days of taking an Uber or Lyft to South Beach for more than $20 may be behind us as the new Student Government Executive Branch leaders work on a reimbursement project.

Less than three months ago, junior Evan De Joya, a geology and biology double major, focused on getting elected as the UM Student Government president. De Joya ran for president under the UFirst ticket with juniors Catherine De Freitas and Rafael Cariello.

Now, the newly inaugurated president focuses on fulfilling his ticket’s campaign promises. For De Joya, this means meeting with administrators to understand all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into completing a Student Government initiative.

“We’ve definitely gotten a better idea of the specific steps that we need to take in order to accomplish our goals,” De Joya said.

One of SG’s most notable ambitions is to set a plan to initiate a subsidization program for Uber and Lyft rides originating from campus.

De Joya said he and his colleagues recently met with UM Department of Parking and Transportation to map out a specific plan of bringing their initiative to life. While it is not expected to come to fruition until 2019, SG has

many projects that students can currently see on campus.

For example, SG leadership has been working to alleviate some of the overcrowding in the library, which is typical for finals season.

In response to student complaints about a lack of a quiet study space, De Joya met with the Office of Classroom Management to secure 10 classrooms in the Dooly Memorial Building to use as study rooms during reading days. Rooms will be available from April 28 to May 1.

“It’s a start, and it’s a pilot,” De Joya said. “We’re going to see how many students use it.”

SG is also sponsoring an eight-hour study event at the Rat to offer another option for students looking to cram on campus.

De Joya has been working on another goal for SG since the start of his campaign, too – transparency.

“We want students to not only know what projects we’re working on, but to also be engaged with them,” he said.

De Joya expects to release the first SG progress report at the end of April and for the monthly publications to continue throughout next year.

Each issue will lay out the details behind SG initiatives and keep students updated about what is going on during meetings, all with the goal of ensuring everyone on campus stays in the loop on SG’s activities.

De Joya hopes that demystifying SG’s process will encourage more students to get involved.

“Developing a strong and diverse team that has a bunch of different perspectives from all across campus will be very valuable in getting initiatives done,” he said.

Hoping to attract new members for next year, SG created a streamlined application process for its six executive committees. Now, instead of using a different form for each committee, students can fill out a common application to avoid confusion.

Since making this change, SG has seen a 50 percent increase in applications for executive committee seats, De Joya said.

“As students, we’re really the stakeholders in this university,” he said. “Enabling students to have a voice on campus gets people more engaged and also makes them feel like they’re a valuable part of the community.”

Working to create a Student Government that is completely visible and accessible to all students is SG’s main mission for the next year.

“We want students to be able to play as big a role in the campus community as possible,” De Joya said.

“Bettering our connection with the student body is so important.”

Duerk’s first year

When Jeffrey Duerk, a rooted midwesterner, came to the University of Miami a little more than nine months ago, he didn’t know he would have to lead an academic institution through a hurricane. Though he’s spent less than a year at the university, Duerk has had to balance more than a few things on his plate. Still, he said the university’s students continue to impress him every day.

“I feel great; I feel energized,” Duerk said. “I would say inspired is another word I would use. It’s just been an amazing year getting to know the students, the faculty, the leadership, at the dean level. The team I work with really has been remarkable and far more than I expected.”

Duerk, former dean and Leonard Case professor of the School of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, was appointed UM’s new executive vice president and provost in July 2017. He succeeded former provost Thomas LeBlanc, who left UM last year to become George Washington University’s president.

In the short time Duerk has been in the position, he’s had to face making a decision on one of the biggest storms recorded in history to hit South Florida.

Even months after Hurricane Irma hit South Florida and closed UM’s Coral Gables campus for weeks, Duerk still said it was one of the toughest parts of the job.

“Understanding the size of a hurricane, coming from the Midwest, where we see things like blizzards that happen over the winter time and having seen hurricanes on the news, it doesn’t give you any type of perspective on what a real one was like,” he said.

However, Duerk said from the experience he learned both lessons and areas of improvement. He said the UM leadership team, which he is a part of, made the right decision to close down campus when assessing the magnitude and impact of the storm. He said making decisions early, such as canceling classes, evacuating campus and getting students home safely in a timely manner, was among the biggest things he learned.

If there was anything to improve upon throughout the whole experience, Duerk said it was to be clearer with the UM community on when the university plans to reopen and return to campus and on the “different modes” in which the university will operate when a storm comes. He said he’d like to see different phases, such as “preparing, enduring and recovering,” activated in the future.

Duerk said he doesn’t think provosts, in their first year, can really accomplish a lot because they’re still learning about the university. However, he said one of his proudest moments was facilitating in recruiting top talent to the university. During the 2017-2018 academic year, Cindy Munro was appointed as UM’s new dean of School of Nursing and Health Studies and Henri Ford as the dean of the Miller School of Medicine. Recruitment for the new dean of the School of Education and Human Development will wrap up in the next couple of weeks, too, he said.

“Those are big things because that is essentially the leadership team of the university,” Duerk said.

In the future, Duerk said he hopes to help the university become “AAU competitive.” The Association of American Universities, comprised of “62 distinguished institutions,” earns the majority of competitively awarded federal funding for academic research and helps shape policy for higher education. Duerk’s former university, Case Western Reserve University, is one of the 62.

The AAU selects universities to be members.

Duerk said he plans on becoming AAU competitive by “increasing research funding and being more sophisticated” in how research is approached as well as being more “interdisciplinary.”

Duerk said if there was one thing he could reiterate over and over it would be that the UM student body is so impressive.

“Probably 70 percent of the students would have been in engineering and science,” Duerk said. “Here, what’s really interesting is the mix of students.

It’s a different kind of student, and they’re really good. The students are remarkable in so many ways. It’s really been an inspiring nine months.”

New UMTV show exhibits ‘The Culture’ of black UM

Sophomores Rachel Smith and Kristion Matas were sitting at the University of Miami TV general body meeting in January when they felt something was missing.

Smith and Matas didn’t feel any of the seven existing TV shows the station offered represented their viewpoints.

“We realized that there wasn’t a show that talked about the things we wanted to talk about,” said Smith, a broadcast journalism and sports administration double major.

So they decided to create one that did.

Smith, alongside Matas, conceived the idea to create a new show called “The Culture,” UMTV’s first show to highlight

the black experience at UM. The 15-minute show has different segments that cover culture, politics, entertainment and sports with a diverse cast.

In the four-episode spring 2018 season, “The Culture” covered political and social issues, including the national gun control debate and the “Black State of UM,” where different leaders of organizations talked about what’s going on in black UM. The “heart of the show” is “The Roundtable,” where a panel of students discuss issues plaguing the community, including gun violence against blacks, demonstrated by the shooting in March of an unarmed Stephon Clark at the hands of police.

Smith said the goal of the show is to provide a space for issues that face black people, analyzed and presented by black people – something that does not often happen.

“When we see black people on TV, we either see them as professional athletes or mugshots,” Smith said. “Representation is a huge part of our show.”

However, for the idea of the show to come to fruition took some work. Smith and Matas went from one School of Communication faculty member to another, pitching their idea until they were referred to one that got on board with the project.

UM professor Winston Warrior said when he was approached with the idea to create a show that gives an underrepresented population on campus a voice, there was “no way” he could turn it down.

“To have students want to start things and start to pursue it, and then pursue it in a serious way, in my opinion, should be deemed with respect and listened to, at least,” Warrior said.

Warrior, who is African American, said he categorizes the idea as “trailblazing” and one that begs the attention of many. Warrior is a double alumnus from UM – he received his BBA in international finance and marketing and his MBA in marketing.

Warrior, who is also the principal marketing and business strategy consultant of Vintage Consulting & Entertainment, said he wished he had thought of the idea when he was in school.

“It’s such a dope idea, why didn’t we do it?” Warrior said. “Giving a voice to the black community on campus is something that I think is important that is embraced ... It just makes perfect sense.”

Smith said though UM is one of the most diverse campuses in the United States, there aren’t “a lot of black people” on UM’s campus.

“It’s an interesting experience,”

Smith said.

According to the 2017-2018 UM Fall Fact Book, 10 percent of UM’s population identifies as black.

Tre’Vaughn Howard, a freshman majoring in broadcast journalism, said “The Culture” has given him the opportunity to offer “valuable input” to the production.

He said the show also serves as a resource for other black students who are looking to be better represented in student media.

“The show highlights not only the black experience at UM but also gives new perspectives from organizations and events that otherwise have not been showcased,” Howard said.

“The Culture” will be back for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Gay senior finds community in Greek Life

Michael Alexander is a gay man navigating life in the context of weekly testosterone-fueled meetings with his fraternity brothers as a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

“I can’t think of any instances where my sexuality defined who I am as a brother,” said Alexander, a brother of the fraternity since 2014 and fifth-year architecture student who is about to graduate. “My brothers have always had my back.”

For openly gay men like Alexander, joining Greek Life at any university can be a harrowing journey, especially at the time when most young men are growing into and identifying with their sexuality.

However, Alexander said being Greek has been one of the best decisions he’s made.

“Looking back, I see the amazing strides made in the unification of Greek Life at Miami, with all the stigmas and bad press Greek Life gets on a national scale, all of UM’s chapters work hard on disregarding those stigmas as they’re not a representation of Greek Life at all,” Alexander said.

Though newly-inducted Alpha Sigma Phi brother Jason Perez identifies as heterosexual, he said one of his fraternity brothers is gay and all members “treat him with the same respect and dignity” as any other member of the fraternity.

“One of the biggest selling points for Alpha Sigma Phi when I was rushing was that they have different personalities within the frat, and they don’t all fit into the mold of the stereotypical ‘frat guy,’” Perez said.

The age of the hyper-masculine fraternity culture is curbing, according to a 2007 study by the Lambda 10 project.

About 74 percent of undergraduate students rated the climate of their chapter for LGBTQ people as friendly, and 71 percent said the climate for LGBTQ people was respectful, according to the study.

James Rauh recently came out as gay to his friends and family after several years of “convincing” himself he was straight. He is now a freshman

studying international finance and marketing and said he is considering joining a fraternity next year.

“As someone who isn’t heteronormative, I’m honestly not concerned with any discrimination,” Rauh said. “I think the inability for GBTQ members to join a fraternity is rapidly disappearing.

I personally know many fraternity brothers who don’t identify as straight, and I know from their experiences that it doesn’t take anything away from being in a frat.”

Rauh said the only reason he didn’t join one this year was because of a time commitment conf lict. He said with all of his extracurricular activities and job “it would be too much on his plate.”

He is among the many freshman who are considering or have already joined Greek Life at University of Miami.

Helpful to the atmosphere is the university’s no-hazing stance.

Most recently, Delta Gamma Women’s Fraternity was kicked off campus for hazing. The strict policies are supposed to provide a safer and more engaging experience for incoming pledges.

But not all universities have policies like Miami’s. In the study done by the Lambda 10 project, 22 percent of undergraduate students indicated that they were victims of harassment because of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

A quarter of those undergrads who were not “out” said the harassment included threats of outing or expulsion from the fraternity.

Projects sponsored by the University of Miami such as The Tunnel of Oppression and the Gay Straight Alliance are aimed at helping to create a more positive environment for LGBTQ students. Within fraternities, the culture seems to be shifting toward a more progressive

and accepting approach.

Most students mentioned the acceptance not only within their own fraternities but throughout the entire university, which they cited as a possible reason for the more open environment and diversity within the fraternities.

On an even larger scale, the way the nation treats members of the LGBTQ community has become exponentially better, although there is still much work to be done.

“I think our generation as a whole is more inclusive toward the LGBTQ+ community than

older generations,” president of Kappa Sigma Bradley Sheehan said. “Nobody really cares about your sexuality or identification.”

Alexander said he encourages everyone, including freshmen who are wary of rushing, to join Greek Life.

“I’d tell them to forget all the stereotypes that the media has engraved in their heads,” Alexander said. “I would also tell them to go into rush with an open mind and give everyone a fair chance because that’s what the organizations are doing, too.”

At The Miami Hurricane, we work long hours, break difficult stories and scramble to deliver deadline after deadline – and we’re the lucky ones. At least we get the chance to do it.

Our peers, in the student newsrooms across America, are not always so fortunate.

Schools with student bodies four times our size have seen their student publications fall to the wayside. If they’re not defunded altogether, they’re absorbed into the school’s communication curriculum, their editorial independence quashed in the process.

Our journalism professors are amazing allies and educators – but their work is wasted if we don’t get a chance to practice what they preach outside of the classroom, where

April at UM means several things: Our beautiful campuses are blooming, students are preparing for finals and commencement is right around the corner. Every year, students ask me for advice as they

we’re truly free to succeed and fail – and learn the difference – on our own.

There’s no real way to balance unbiased reporting with an institution’s selfinterest, and we would never ask a school to try.

What we are asking, instead, is for a commitment to the work student journalists do.

A recognition of their role on campus and a place to practice it. At TMH, our physical newsroom is a center of conversation, learning, camaraderie and – for many – the first place we truly get a sense of the professional world of journalism.

Like any other studentrun organization, campus newspapers should have the ability to come together and carry out their mission – to

have their work be supported, without being controlled.

Though we often hear that “anybody with a smartphone can be a journalist,” we know the benefits of belonging to an organization: accountability to a code of ethics, for one, and the group’s ability to work against potential biases in reporting.

But why should you care? A threat to student newsrooms is a threat to students everywhere.

By attacking journalism at a collegiate level, schools remove from their students the ability to become familiar with how an independent press works, to learn the difference between news sources and public relations sites disguised as news providers.

So in a movement spearheaded by journalists at the

Independent Florida Alligator, we’re asking for your help to #SaveStudentNewsrooms.

We want other schools to share the same comfort of funding and editorial independence that we’ve been able to enjoy at TMH. Here, at least, no one gives the OK on our work but us.

Even if you never plan to work at a paper, you can still help the cause. Read the work of student journalists – share it, if you like it – and be wary of programs, institutions and budget cuts that threaten its survival. You don’t need to be a journalist to reap the benefits a free press affords.

A new column from UM President Julio Frenk graduate from the U and begin their careers.

I think it is fitting that graduation is called “Commencement.” It marks a new beginning – a moment when students take what they have learned into the world. I am very proud that students at the U do not wait until commencement to engage with the world’s challenges.

Recently, several University of Miami students, some of whom are graduates of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, helped lead the local March for Our Lives rally.

They spoke to the crowd of thousands about their refusal to stay silent in the face of violence or intimidation.

These students and the countless young people across the country who are organizing around the issues they care about are an inspiration to me.

They offer an important reminder to

us older adults: We must stay engaged and we can never fall silent.

UM students have a long history of standing up and speaking out. Our students have always been ready to lead, and this time is no different. The U offers academic and professional preparation and firmly believes in giving students the resources they need to thrive in every aspect of their lives as engaged and informed citizens.

The dialogue led by UM students about Parkland and the complex issues it raises is a testament to our commitment to training professionals who will use their talents to improve the world around them. I see this every time I walk across the U and see students leading major outreach and community initiatives, and I see it in the ways our students and faculty are using scholarship to illuminate and solve problems.

Your lives will undoubtedly change as you walk across the commencement stage and toward a new phase, so my advice is to remember the urgency and passion that you have within you now.

No matter which path you choose, continue to speak your truth, consider what is right and just and explore how your life and career can serve others. We know that Canes are not known for complacency. Let the spirit of the University of Miami stay lit within you. This is just the beginning of your work in the world.

I wish you the best of luck on your final exams. Congratulations to our graduates and their families, and my thanks to all of you for your contributions to the U this year.

SENIOR REFLECTIONS More to say

When I was growing up, I went through phases of watching the same movie

By Annie version of Cappetta a musical Managing Editor every weekend for months on end. Between “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Funny Girl” and other classics, my deepest obsession of all was “Evita,” the Madonna version of the ode to the Argentinian antiheroine Eva Perón.

I’ve been writing for The Miami Hurricane since the first month of my freshman year, spilling my strongest feelings, innermost thoughts, odd obsessions and fresh breaking news with all of you. My dream is to go out from the University of Miami in an Evita-style blaze as she proclaims from her “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” balcony, “Have I said too much? There’s nothing more I can think of to say to you. But all you have to do is look at me to know that every word is true.”

As I write these words, not paying attention to the class I’m in – how many of my best columns have been written – my eyes are welling up with tears. Don’t worry – I’m a notorious public crier.

I can’t go out with the same bang as Perón. While every word has been true, I can think of so much more to say to you. My crazy organizational scheme on the productivity app Trello is filled with dozens of ideas

for stories that I won’t be the author of.

The Miami Hurricane became my home after I floated around trying activities that didn’t quite fit. It became my full-time job and I poured as much love into my work at The Hurricane as people do into their relationships. Breaking up with TMH when our love is as passionate and fiery as ever is as hard as with any college sweetheart.

When I go home to Chicago for breaks, things never quite feel the same as they did when I was living there full time. I butt heads with my parents more now that I live independently. I lost close high school friendships and the ones that stuck changed. The town that was once my whole world seems less significant or necessary now.

You can never really go back home.

I know I will make a new home as I head to law school in a new city, and that will be as fulfilling as building my home at TMH was, but it will be different and I will never recreate what I have here and now.

When I was opinion editor, I implemented a target word count of 400 to 500 words, much to my writers’ chagrin. Forced brevity has always made my words more digestible and powerful. I wish I had thousands more to use, but I know that will take away from the meaning. I know I can never come back home once I leave. And I know it has to end somewhere.

The bliss of connection

I’ve been simultaneously procrastinating and looking forward to writing this column for a long time. It’s a good thing

By Isabella working for Cueto The Hurricane Editor-in-Chief has made me great at writing on deadline. And though I only just now put my fingers to the keyboard, I’ve thought about this column a lot – how to summarize these last four years in 400, 450 words max?

The whole world has changed since I started at UM in 2014, and I have changed, too. As a freshman missing her high school squad, I didn’t know that a campus and buildings don’t make up a university – people do.

Being a journalist has given me the indescribable privilege to have honest, long, deep, prying conversations with pretty much anyone.

Many of you reading this have been on the receiving end of my nosiness because this community is full of awe-inspiring, hardworking, dynamic people. I’ve gotten to know many of them as professors, friends and mentors.

The greatest joy of my college years has been nurturing those relationships and allowing them to enrich my life. After every interview, conversation, phone call, meeting, conference, date, wine night and deadline, I sat back and felt that incredible feeling – the bliss of connection – washing over and seeping into me.

Every time, it was an affirmation. I first decided I wanted to be a journalist

during an Oprah’s Master Class binge the summer after senior year. I heard the incomparable Maya Angelou explain how words matter.

“Some day we’ll be able to measure the power of words,” she said. “I think they are things. They get on the walls. They get in your wallpaper. They get in your rugs, in your upholstery and your clothes and finally into you.”

I have often used words – others’ and my own – to keep moving forward. So much of making it up whatever ladder we choose to climb is simply starting, envisioning ourselves at the top and filling the gap with gentle you-can-do-its. In times when I didn’t have the energy to encourage myself, I had others around me who believed in my potential.

The past few weeks have been emotional as I try to reflect on the past, prepare for the future and savor the present, yet the overwhelming feeling is gratitude. The people I have met during college have made this place difficult to say goodbye to (something I never expected).

I’ll miss running breathlessly to the office when news breaks; giving stressed out TMH friends and staffers a pep talk and a whiff of lavender oil; steaming costumes in the Ring Theatre dressing rooms before opening night; designing covers and brainstorming staff editorials; and getting big hugs from our goddess of an adviser, Tsitsi Wakhisi.

I’ll miss so much, more than my words can express.

Meant to be

I wasn’t even supposed to be here.

No, really.

Me graduating from

By Amanda the UniHerrera versity of News Editor Miami in three weeks? Never. A higher education for me was unattainable a little more than four years ago.

Or so I thought.

It’s not that I didn’t believe in myself or that high school didn’t prepare me well. But there were other hurdles beyond an application.

At 17, I had absolutely no idea how to apply to a college, what FAFSA meant or even how to study for the ACT. My mom didn’t finish college. My dad didn’t go to college. And my older brother didn’t either.

When I went home to start my college applications, in a lot of ways, I was lost.

But if my parents could leave everything they knew and come to the United States with merely a distant dream for a prosperous future, I couldn’t let them down.

For the first two years of college, I didn’t know what I was doing.

I was doing well in my classes but felt like I was missing something. That something turned out to be the talented and driven individuals that comprised The Miami Hurricane.

TMH has given me confidence and the ability to tell stories through

voices not often heard.

Every person I’ve walked past in college has a story. TMH has afforded me the opportunity to get to know so many of you and tell your stories.

I’ve been able to work in the field that I’ve dreamt about since I was 5 years old, thanks to TMH. I’ve been able to tell the stories of so many remarkable people that walk across this campus every day. I’ve been able to cover some of recent history’s most monumental moments, including the Women’s March on Washington and the 2017 presidential inauguration.

But I couldn’t have done that without my family. Both my family at home and the little family we’ve cultivated at TMH. As I’m on the cusp of graduation, I understand how truly lucky I am.

The experiences and opportunities I’ve had are some that students in El Salvador would never even imagine. And I’m here.

It’s hard not to feel guilty at times, but I’ve realized the best thing I can do is to use these valuable experiences to give back to those who I could have been, given other circumstances.

UM and TMH have given me the opportunity to do so in the future.

So maybe I was meant to be here.

A step-by-step guide to surviving The Miami Hurricane As a graduating senior with plenty of college experiences under my belt, I know as well as anyone how daunting it can be to join a student

It’s normal to worry about keeping up with everything, from classes to social life to extracurricular endeavors. When I was starting out at UM, no one warned me what it would really be like to dedicate myself to an organization –

sacrificing my time, energy and even sanity, at times.

So I’m going to give you the courtesy that no one gave me.

Without further ado, here’s my step-by-step guide to surviving The Miami Hurricane.

STUDENT MEDIA CONFERENCES Never – and I mean never – attend one. Not only will the university absolutely insist upon paying for your flight and hotel (ugh, so demeaning), but you won’t know what to do with your time after the critiques and sessions are done for the day. Who wants to be stuck in New York City or San Francisco or Washington, D.C. with absolutely no responsibilities

and all the options in the world?

Not me, that’s for sure.

PARTICIPATION

Do as little as possible. Don’t make the mistake of getting involved in a variety of things. We all know branching outside of our comfort zone is the absolute worst, and no one should ever do it. What if we realize we’ve been pursuing the wrong passions, or see something in a new light? Or worst of all, what if we learn something completely and utterly new? No, thank you.

Continually, I found myself on the fringes of circles that were tightknit and much more dedicated to an activity than I was, be it book club, the literary magazine, yoga, improv, the comedy show or salsa dancing. As a junior, I even joined the institution I’d spent two years down-talking: Greek Life. All in all, I made some good friends, but I never found who I deemed to be my people.

Despite nearly seven years of being in long-term, fulfilling romantic relationships, I couldn’t make my friendships stick. I was

stuck on this mythological idea of my people – a fictional group of fashionable, hyper-intelligent, weightlifting music connoisseurs who would materialize and offer me their friendship. Truthfully, I didn’t need these so-called my people, with their vintage clothes and impeccable taste in poetry. I just needed people.

I thought I just hadn’t found the right people, and that if I found ones who fit my made-up trope, they’d automatically like me.

Now, I realize I’m a jerk.

Well, not actually, but I come off that way to some. When it comes to platonic relationships, I’m stoic and practical. I don’t initiate hugs.

I don’t give compliments. I’ve made up equations in my head like “two

you do, you’ll end up seeing them outside of the newsroom, past the hours of the typical workday. Sure, it may seem like just a casual chat between colleagues at first, but that can easily spiral into frequent dinners out, wine nights after particularly stressful deadlines or even attending feminist lingerie art shows together. Avoid this. God forbid you make friends for life.

I don’t know about you, but I sure didn’t strive for a (pricey) degree at UM to use it. Why would someone earning a journalism degree actually want to pursue journalistic opportunities outside

Yet I’ve always been one to shower my significant others with an ungodly amount of pet names and physical affection, attend all the things that matter to them and listen with genuine interest. When we’re “an item,” it all feels easy.

The disconnect, for me, is that “friend” is not a binding label – nobody gets down on one knee and asks for your hand in holy camaraderie. That means that I could wildly misinterpret someone’s “friend” signals, like a smile or compliment. The average confident person takes these things as a suggestion that someone wants to befriend them or at least get to know them better. But when someone smiles at me, I’m internally screaming, “What if they were just being civil?

What if they actually hate me?”

of the classroom? I’ve gotten all the information I need from those sparse PowerPoint slides with ambiguous terms and arbitrary instructions.

Honestly, maybe you shouldn’t even join at all. Terrible environment, terrible work and even more terrible coworkers. Besides, if your work is published, either online or in print, it’s there forever.

Permanent. Visible to all future colleagues, employers and mentors.

And who wants a post-grad legacy that badly?

Elizabeth Gelbaugh will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in communication honors – journalism.

Friendships aren’t equations; they’re relationships, just like romantic ones – only now am I starting to accept this. Maybe it’s the fear of my impending graduation, but I’ve finally mustered the courage to tell people around me that I like them and I want to spend time with them. This has led to wine-fueled game nights, ice cream runs and thrifting trips with people I’ve longed to be close with and deep, heart-felt conversations with people I’ve always kept at arm’s length.

To everyone I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in college and before – let’s be friends. I hope it’s not too late.

Student strives to keep twin brother’s

memory alive after graduation

ROTC student finds unexpected career path in college

Anna Samuel grew up in a military household and thought about becoming an Air Force officer like both her parents.

So when she enrolled at the University of Miami, Samuel joined the Air Force ROTC program and set her goals on commissioning as a second lieutenant in the Air Force after graduation.

But at a midterm counseling session during spring semester of her sophomore year, Samuel embraced a new career goal.

“I went in that meeting with no goal in mind, but I left with the confidence to become a fighter pilot,” Samuel said.

In a manner of speaking, Samuel has fighter pilot DNA. Her father, Charles Samuel, had been a fighter pilot. But when she joined the ROTC program, her dad did not suggest that she follow in his footsteps, Samuel said.

Rather, it would be Lt. Col. Damon Ingram, who was the detachment commander at UM’s Air Force ROTC, who would encourage her. He saw her potential and told her that she had the mental, physical and leadership characteristics to become a successful fighter pilot,

Rick and David Lin shared almost everything in life – from the womb to the same college major and university.

But when David Lin was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, his twin brother would come to realize that the two would not share the joy of graduating together from the University of Miami, where they both have been heavily involved in campus organizations.

Rick Lin was spared the disease but not the anguish of seeing his brother suffer.

“My brother’s leukemia was pretty aggressive and different from typical acute leukemia,” Rick Lin said.

And it was unexpected.

According to the American Cancer Society, the number of new cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia was 1.7 per 100,000 men and women per year.

Rick Lin, a public health major, researched the best possible treatment plan for his brother. He found a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, where David Lin would receive his final treatment.

While Rick Lin felt optimistic, David’s condition continued to worsen.

David died in January 2017.

“When he passed away, I felt really guilty,” Lin said. “Well, not guilty but really hard on myself because I found this

While many would turn away from the most painful moment in their life, Lin is using it to propel his mission – to help others using David’s story.

One of David’s favorite things to do in the hospital was read, so Lin started David’s Library, a search engine for patients and the families of patients to find book dropoff locations. The goal is for patients to occupy themselves while undergoing treatment.

“Before this, I had never gone through anything so hard,” Lin said.

As he wraps up his senior year, Lin said he plans to expand the website to include a section for users to share their stories. It will be a way for people who are suffering from the same illness to connect with each other, he said.

Rick Lin, 21, is a public health major from Weston, Florida. After graduation, he plans to take a gap year to prepare for his eventual enrollment in medical school.

Athlete picks UM out of 45 other schools to impress audiences in New York City four years ago, realizes her American dream

The musical theater program at the University of Miami usually takes its senior BFA class to New York in the spring to perform in front of an audience of theatrical agents.

The opportunity can open doors on Broadway for these budding performers.

But this year, senior Daniel Barrett made the showcase a little more memorable.

Inspired by his classmates, Barrett reached out to Feinstein’s/54 Below, the famed cabaret and restaurant, located below Studio 54. The goal was to get the famous Broadway supper club to showcase the UM seniors in front of its diners, including the many theater professionals who frequent the shows.

“It was an idea that we had as a class a year ago,” Barrett said. “I took it upon myself to email them and go ahead and create a dialogue to see if it was possible to work with them.”

After getting the go ahead, the BFA class of 2018 cemented itself in history and became the first UM class to perform at the club. Fifteen seniors, including Barrett, made the trip and performed a song, monologue and partnered scene during the showcase.

Thanks to Barrett’s dedicated effort, the seniors received several meetings and auditions with Broadway agents after the show, including with the national tour of “Book of Mormon.”

Though Barrett impressed the New York crowd just this year, he has been dazzling the UM theater community for the past four years with his work in nine performances, including “Romeo and Juliet” and “Of Thee I Sing.” Barrett, who acts and does stage management, is playing the Modern Major General in this semester’s production of “Pirates of Penzance.” He was nominated by his peers to be the show’s equity deputy, the liaison between the Actor’s Union and UM. Barrett is also president of the Theatre Action Group, or TAG, the university’s theater student organization. The group sponsors mentor and mentee programs as well as cabaret performances.

Barrett, who is openly gay, also has leant his acting talents to the annual campus DragOut, UM’s annual LGBTQ fundraising event where student and professional drag queens and kings come together to raise money for the homeless and other charitable causes. Barrett won the competition in 2015 as a freshman with his now famous performance as Liza Minnelli.

“I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t do theater,” Barrett said. “It might not pay the big bucks, but it pays the soul in a way that money can’t buy.”

Daniel Barrett, 22, is a musical theater major from Los Angeles. After graduation, Barrett will work on a production in Fort Lauderdale during the summer then head to New York, where he plans to sign with an agent while freelance acting for a while.

There’s a first time for everything: first dates, first loves and the first time feeling at home in a place where you weren’t raised.

Senior volleyball player Lucia Pampana, known as “Luchie” by friends and family, experienced all of these in one night – in South Beach.

The feat of firsts happened the fall of 2015 when Pampana and University of Miami football player Bar Milo had their first official date as a couple. They were sophomores, both with one year of Division-1 collegiate athletics under their belts.

To celebrate the start of their relationship, Milo took the Italian native to what he heard was the best Italian restaurant in Miami – Hosteria Romana.

Milo pointed out to Pampana that the waiter who was approaching them was speaking Italian.

“That was the most overjoyed I’ve seen her thus far,” Milo said. “Her head flicked to him, her eyes lit up with excitement and she had the biggest smile on her face she was trying to hold back. I knew she felt at home.”

She confidently struck up a conversation with the waiter in Italian. Milo sat back, awestruck.

“I just saw a beautiful girl with so much passion and energy,” Milo said with a flushed face.

“I wanted to go where Lizzie McGuire was,” Pampana said. “I wanted to go where Raven was.”

She met Alessandro Lodi at a volleyball open gym in Modena. Lodi, an Italian native, had just returned from the United States as a coach for the University of Washington’s women’s volleyball team.

Lodi knew that Pampana was good enough to play in the NCAA upon first seeing her performance.

After Lodi helped Pampana compile recruitment tapes for NCAA schools, Pampana

received 45 Division 1A offers.

Justin Fields, who was the top football recruit of the ESPN 300 2018, received 32.

Pampana remembers every minute of her Skype tour of UM. “I remember seeing all the palm trees and bright buildings,” Pampana said. “It was the first time I fell in love with a place without being there. How could anyone not fall in love with this place?”

Lucia Pampana, 21, from Modena, Italy, has a major in advertising and a minor in marketing.

She played on the varsity volleyball team all four years. Upon graduation, she might pursue a master’s degree in advertising and play beach volleyball at Florida International University.

Senior Recital Season: Frost students celebrate their college careers

When your entire educational career boils down to a single concert, it’s undoubtedly stressful.

Yet Frost students graduating with performance- or composition-based degrees pull it off every year. In their last few months of school, seniors on these tracks, and occasionally others, organize a roughly 90-minute showcase of their talents: the Senior Recital.

“I see two general options for senior recitals,” said Sam Feinstein, a music engineering major. “Students can showcase what they’ve done the past four years and use it as a celebration of what they’ve been doing, or they can try to look forward to what they might possibly be doing in future years ... I wanted my senior recital to primarily consist of my own original work.”

There is no single way to pull off the task of a stellar senior recital. For jazz vocalists, it may mean arranging and singing jazz standards. For media writing and production majors, it may mean showing a series of original film scores. In Feinstein’s case, it meant putting together a rock opera. Regardless of format, senior recitals involve of collaboration with other musicians and sound engineers. ”It was definitely not easy to prepare for,” said Zachary Di Lello, a music theory and composition major. “There were 18 musicians I had to find and schedule rehearsals with. The most stressful part was the logistics of it.”

Emily Ennis, a vocal performance major in the classical department, balanced out-of-town graduate school auditions, opera and musical theater rehearsals and a sinus infection in the weeks leading

up to her recital.

“I was out of town pretty much every weekend in February, which gave me only about a month to really prepare for my senior recital,” Ennis said. “I used my spring break, which I spent here, to go practice every day and work on memorization.”

As taxing as all the preparation can be, few find their recitals anything less than a rewarding experience. For many, it’s a oncein-a-college-career opportunity to take complete creative control over a performance.

Tia Cisterna, a media writing and production major, said she wanted her performance to reflect her stage name: Leolani.

“My artist name, Leolani, means ‘heavenly voice’ in Hawaiian, so I really wanted my recital to embody this ethereal nature.”

Daniel Correa, a media writing and production major, certainly did not let that creative freedom go to waste. His recital featured his original pop songs, classical compositions and film scores, a 30-minute set with his ska band, the Zognoids, and an improvised piece using a multi-track looper and two electric razors.

“The most important lesson I learned is to not be afraid of getting experimental because that is often where your most memorable material lies,” Correa said. “Get weird. Stay weird. Love being weird.”

In many cases, the senior recital is an opportunity for musicians who don’t often front the band, or even take the stage, to have a place in the spotlight. For some, the experience is nerve-wracking, but for others, it’s the catalyst for a post-college performing career.

“After performing live, I realized that I want to keep pushing live performances of my music,” said Logan Elstermann, a media writing and production major. “A lot of what I do with film music and production is only ever realized in a recorded setting. There is something

very special about playing music live, though.”

There’s a consensus among Frost students: The real reward of putting on a senior recital is being able to share your hard work with friends, family and professors. Most recitals are well-attended by Frost students and faculty, out-of-town relatives and other UM friends. Supporters who can’t make the live recitals are often able to watch them on YouTube via livestream, which remains available even after the show is over.

“I had a tremendous amount of support in the audience and over the livestream, and playing for such a friendly crowd made me relax and have fun with it,” said Rebecca Tutunick, a classical flute performance major. “I felt some nerves in my first couple of pieces, but as the program went on, I was able

to really demonstrate all that I have learned during my undergraduate years.”

Support – not just in terms of audience attendance – is what makes senior recitals possible. Amanda Abate, a Music Engineering major, Computer Engineering and Creative American Music minor, has been one of the contemporary department’s greatest supporters in more ways than one. This year alone, she’s been the sound engineer for dozens of recitals, as well as the official sound engineer for the American Music Ensemble. Since she’s used to being behind the scenes, her senior recital was an opportunity to switch gears and showcase her lesser-known talents.

“Because I’m both a music engineer and a CAM songwriter, I’m constantly torn between the

two,” Abate said. “Over the last four years, I’ve been either really into MuE things – coding, designing hardware, recording – or committing to performances and live sound ...

My senior showcase ... was a way to really exemplify the other half of my time at Frost.”

For Abate, the process of preparing for a recital was an exercise in learning to ask for help.

Despite her hesitance, she found that those she had been supporting for years were more than willing to lend a hand.

“I’m very eager to do things for others but not very comfortable asking others for help in return,” Abate said. “This recital would not have happened if I didn’t have my parents, teachers, best friends and colleagues helping me right up until I laid down in bed after the show.”

Most impactful UM senior athletes of school year

The University of Miami brings in some of the country’s

best athletes every year, leading to record-breaking performances in just about every sport the school has to offer.

But every season, each UM program looks to its seniors to lead the way. The pressures

to reach success on and off the field fall heavily on their shoulders.

Here are the five seniors that have thrived in that role.

The 6-foot-3 athlete from Boca Raton, Florida, is ranked nationally in both singles and doubles competition – No. 123 and No. 50, respectively.

In his four years at Miami, Langmo has been on the ACC Honor Roll twice, during the 2014-15 and 2016-17 seasons.

He will graduate with a degree in international studies and plans to play tennis professionally.

Langmo has posted a 12-7 singles record in the No. 1 spot for the Hurricanes, going undefeated in his first seven home matches in the spring and recording a 10-game winning streak at one point.

The Storrs, Connecticut, native competing in combined events has set records both in and out of the classroom.

Taintor, a public relations major, was named to the 2018 AllACC Academic Team, among seven others.

“I am proud of these eight student-athletes for their continued dedication to excellence in academics and athletics,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “All eight of them have been outstanding leaders in the classroom and in their event areas, and I am happy to see them earn recognition for their effort and success.”

Taintor earned a bronze medal in the pentathlon at the 2018 ACC Indoor Championships to close her season. She posted the thirdbest score in UM history with her personal best record of 3,967 points.

The distance runner from Dix Hills, New York, is gaining momentum as he closes his senior season.

At the Virginia Challenge Saturday, April 21, Grossman broke the 30-minute mark in the men’s 10,000-meter to set a school record.

He recorded a sixth place finish with a personal-best time of 29:38.64.

The time is ranked in the top five in program history.

“It was a magical night tonight in the 10K,” Miami distance coach Damon Griffiths said. “We came in with a goal of achieving a regional mark. Sean surpassed all expectations during his race. To finish with a 30-second PR and beat some elite runners was special.”

Grossman will graduate with a degree in architectural engineering.

The 6-foot-2 forward/center from Decatur, Georgia, led the Canes to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament during the 2017-18 season – an accomplishment few thought UM would reach following the graduation of its three leading scorers the previous season.

Davenport, who majors in broadcast journalism, dominated on both sides of the court, averaging 12.5 points and 8.6 rebounds a night while also serving as the team’s defensive anchor. She grew into her role as a leader, not only guiding her team to victories, but also mentoring the young players, including five freshmen.

Davenport’s role as a vocal team captain paid dividends throughout the season, leading to a 21-11 overall record and a 10-6 conference record.

She earned Second Team All-ACC honors.

“She is always there, but you don’t necessarily feel like she is,” junior forward Emese Hof said.

“There was no extra pressure from her. She let everyone grow to their fullest potential, and that was a big part of how she handled herself as a senior and a captain on the team.”

The southpaw pitcher from Owasso, Oklahoma, has made his presence felt from the moment he stepped on the mound in Coral Gables.

After transferring from Cisco College following his sophomore year, Bargfeldt proved his talents immediately during the 2017 season, serving as the team’s ace.

He recorded a 2.28 ERA and earned second-team All-ACC honors.

In the 2018 season, his numbers don’t look quite as glossy, but he is still getting the job done on Friday nights. Bargfeldt holds a 3.94 ERA, and despite posting just a 2-3 record, he is still the Hurricanes’ captain and a leader who keeps the team’s emotions steady during games.

In a season during which Miami has suffered a handful of series opening losses while struggling offensively, Bargfeldt’s performance has become that much more vital. And he doesn’t let bad outings affect his mindset.

“For me, I have to stay on, attacking hitters and not worrying about if I missed a pitch,” he said after a win over Rutgers on opening day Feb. 16.

Tennis teams thrive in seniors’ final games

It was a bittersweet day for the Hurricanes men’s tennis team, but well worth it.

After getting shut out by No. 7 North Carolina 4-0 in the first match of their doubleheader Sunday, April 22, Miami flew

by Dayton 4-0 to cap off its 2018 regular season campaign at Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

“I’m happy for our guys to get a good, tough win on a long day,” coach Aljosa Piric said. “We definitely had to work this afternoon against Dayton … I’m happy for our seniors to get a win at home in their last match. I was excited

for them and excited for our team.”

The victory gave No. 48 UM (14-11, 4-8 ACC) its best home record since 2006, when the team went 12-2.

Playing for the final time on their home court, seniors Christian Langmo and Niclas Genovese, who made their doubles debut as a pair, earned the Hurricanes’ doubles point. They rallied from a triple match-point to force a tiebreaker on court No. 2.

Langmo and Genovese defeated Daytons’ Lorenzo Rollhauser and Steven Karl 7-6 (7-4). Fellow senior Nile Clark and freshman Pablo Aycart picked up a 7-5 victory over Will Harper and Simon

Jayaram at the No. 3 spot moments prior.

In singles play, freshman Bojan Jankulovski and redshirt sophomore Dane Dunlap notched victories after falling in doubles play on the main court.

Langmo had the honor of clinching the match for Miami with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Carsten Fisher. Miami honored Langmo, Genovese and Clark before the match against North Carolina.

The Hurricanes begin postseason play when they travel to Cary, North Carolina, for the 2018 ACC Championship. No. 10 UM will face No. 7 NC State at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 26.

No. 57-ranked Sinead Lohan and the No. 17-ranked Miami Hurricanes capped off their 2018 regular season campaign with a dominating 6-1 victory over Notre Dame Sunday, April 22, in Indiana.

Lohan, a senior who played in her final regular season match, tallied a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Brooke Broda. This brought her winning streak to five games and her singles record to 17-5 in the spring.

“We were really doing some good things on a

lot of courts, so it was fun,” Miami coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I’m excited to get home and have a few days to get focused on our next step.”

Lohan and Ana Madcur, the No. 81-ranked pair in the country, solidified the doubles point for the Canes (15-6, 11-3 ACC) with a 6-4 win over Allison Miller and Bess Waldram.

“She is a special kid,” Yaroshuk-Tews said of Lohan, who is the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship semifinalist. “All these

kids are special, but Sinead Lohan is going to go down in the books as probably one of the most solid individuals who has ever walked through this program. Obviously, we are sad to see her go, but we’re happy to have been able to have her here for four years, and she’s not done yet.”

Miami earned a double-bye in the ACC Tournament and will begin postseason play Friday, April 27, in Cary, North Carolina.

Hurricanes secure three transfer players

Amid an NCAA scandal involving the bribery of high school athletes, from which the University of Miami’s name has since been cleared in the allegations, the Hurricanes lost their chance at multiple top-100 recruits.

And at the end of the 201718 men’s basketball season in mid-March, UM had zero incoming recruits. But the team has rebounded nicely in the past month, securing three transfer players in a span of two weeks.

The Canes will add Wyoming transfer Anthony Mack, Oklahoma transfer Kameron McGusty and Florida Gulf Coast University transfer Zach Johnson.

Mack, a three-star recruit who attended high school at Blair Academy in New Jersey with rising Miami redshirt freshman Deng Gak, redshirted his freshman year after dealing with concussion issues. The 6-foot-6, 218-pound guard is applying for eligibility to play immediately.

Mack picked Miami over Maryland, Georgia and Virginia Tech.

“I was able to watch Anthony a lot at Blair Academy when we were recruiting Deng Gak, and I loved his game,” coach Jim Larrañaga said. “Anthony is an excellent three-point shooter with great size who can defend multiple positions.”

McGusty, a four-star recruit, started 25 games over the past two seasons at Oklahoma. After averaging just under 11 points during his freshman year, he saw his minutes reduced in his sophomore season, scoring eight points a night.

NCAA transfer regulations. He will have two years of eligibility remaining, starting in the 2019-20 season.

McGusty chose UM over Virginia Tech and Houston.

“Kameron has great character and personality and already fits in well with our current players and coaches,” Larrañaga said.

“He was an All-Big 12 player his freshman year, has NCAA

Tournament experience and is highly motivated to improve and help push our team during his upcoming redshirt season.”

Johnson, a Miami native who went to Norland High School with rising junior Dewan Huell, spent the past four years at FGCU. He graduates in the summer and will be eligible immediately to play his final collegiate season at Miami starting in the fall.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound guard averaged 13 points per game as an Eagle and scored 1,344 points in 103 career games.

“Our first goal in our recruiting this spring was to replace the three outstanding guards in our program: Ja’Quan Newton, Bruce Brown and Lonnie Walker,” Larrañaga said.

“Zach fits the mold of a Miami guard who can play both guard

positions. He is a proven winner who was an all-league player in the Atlantic Sun Conference, has NCAA Tournament experience and won a state high school championship in Florida.”

Johnson initially declared for the 2018 NBA Draft without an agent and then decided to play another year in college. He chose Miami over Creighton, Louisville and Arizona.

As you enter the real world and move on to jobs, new cities and adult life, you may have to leave your guy or gal behind.

Just remember to have really good break up sex. It will be the climax of your college experience.

Love knows no distance, but neither will you if you book a non-refundable plane ticket to see your significant other on your parent’s credit card.

Even if you don’t, just remember summer is short and you have a semester full of sexy activities to look forward to together.

Think of how hot it will be to spend all summer with your bae in 95 degree temperatures. V won’t be the only one who is super wet this summer – you will be literally drenched by your own sweat.

While it will be great to spend time with your special

someone without having to worry about homework and class, remember to take things slow.

Remember those cows who ate their entire ration of food for the winter in one day? The same thing can happen to people from eating too much booty after a stressful semester.

But seriously, take things slow so you don’t hurt yourself physically or emotionally. Too much of a good thing – or person – is still too much.
