CAPUCHIN CRYPT AND CATACOMBS

Explore the crypts and the catacombs of the Underground Rome. We will first head to the Christian Catacombs of Domitilla (or San Callisto or San Sebastiano) in order to discover the secrets of early Christianity by explo ring the underground burial places. Afterwards, we will visit the Museum and the Crypt of the Capuchins, also called the “Bone Church of Rome”. The Capuchin Crypt is a small space comprising several tiny chapels located beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini decorated with the bones of about 4000 de ceased friars. The message of the Capuchin Friars was not meant to be sad, but of hope, since they say that the body is just the soul container waiting for Resurrection.

Due to current Vatican restrictions, the secret passage between the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica remains closed. This means clients that wish to enter St. Peter’s Basilica are required to enter from St. Peter’s Square and pass through additional security & Covid checks, adding an additional hour to the tour. For this reason, the 4-hour tour cannot include the entrance to St. Pe ter’s Basilica but it will end in St. Peter’s Square. Here you can find many of the most famous gastronomic products of the region, as it is strategically located in the centre. The walk will begin in the picturesque streets of the old town, where there are many antique, watch and jewelry shops. Here, in the typical delicatessens you can taste the famous buffalo mozzarella, cold cuts and cheeses. The pizza here is an excellent street food, with its thousand variations. For those who love fish, the typical “cuoppo”, fried food served in a paper wrapping and the typical “colatura di alici” (an chovies liquid) produced in the nearby village on the Amalfi Coast.

The walk includes a stop at the beautiful Cathe dral of St. Matthew, free time to admire the spec tacular monument. We continue in the historic center, with a stop at a famous pastry shop, to taste the wonderful sfogliatella, pride of Naples, we continue to the main street, full of clothing stores and bars. Not to be missed is the coffee or the tasting of limoncello, or other typical li queur, such as fennel.

Continue along the seafront, where sometimes there are typical markets, and return to the mee ting point.

Back Salerno, the second most important city in the Campania region, was the capital of Italy af ter the Second World War and experienced the tragedy of the Allied landing. Cannaregio is a lovely quiet residential area of Venice, less crowded than the main tourist sights but full of in teresting architecture and history. A pleasant stroll here will reveal that Venice has much more to offer than St Mark’s Square. You will see the Campo dei Mori and the house of the Arab merchants, whose stories will surprise you, you will meet lots of local people still using the traditional dialect to talk to each other, old ladies out for groceries, children playing in the streets and students

running to their lessons. Also, in the heart of this “ses tiere” was created by the Serenissima in 1516 the first Jewish ghetto in Europe. The ghetto was connected to the rest of the city by bridges with gates, which were clo sed at sunset. You will learn how they used to live, pray and work. Their life was totally different from any other Jews at that time, and it went on like this up until 1797, when the ghetto gates were demolished by the Napoleonic Army. You will also have the chance to visit the museum and the synagogues; the visit to the synagogues can be done only with one of the local docents of the ghetto following a specific schedule and it will be a group tour.

Let us introduce you to the Battiloro, a famous family of goldsmiths, who for almost a hundred years, have been responsible for ador ning the gondola trappings with gold leaf. Mario Berta Battiloro, a Venetian family, the last artisan company of gold beaters left in Europe, keeper of the art of working gold in thin sheets, an ancient profession that came to Venice from Byzantium around the year 1000.

In the workshop opened for the first time in 1926, 24 carat gold ingots have been transformed into very thin leaves for four generations for different areas of application.

In the morning, meet with your assistant and departure by luxury water cab to discover the islands of Murano.
