Today we welcome all our wonderful sponsors & Chelsea FNC to the kennel for what is a special day, 21/05/2022, the 130th Anniversary of the boating diaster in 1892 where 15 young men lost their lives on the way back from a footy match. This morning we joined the community in laying a wreath at the memorial at the end of Main Street, to remember and pay tribute this very important part of our club's history.

Also today we will be supporting The Red Shield Appeal, so when at the bar or canteen drop a few dollars in the tin or you can make a donation by card at the gate with the Salvo's.

National Volunteer Week is this week & a chance to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers within our community and to say thank you. To all our club volunteers, committee, volunteer coaches, team managers, runners, time keepers, Thursday Night Mums, bar people, photographers, videographers, helpers around the club and home game helpers, that Together, through volunteering, we are making our club for the better. We are, Better Together!

The record this week has a really community feel this week with history be honoured, giving to the fantastic causes like Red Shield & BCNA and thanking all our volunteers. this what local clubs are all about

Football Well what I can say not the best day and it started with Riley Welsh & Nathan Heath dropping out on the day, so that was going to make the tough, tougher. Not much more I can say but move on to this week as we take on Chelsea and look to play like we know we can play-Hopefully we have some more ins than outs and we can be much more competive than last week. The U19's have a BYE as Chelsea have none so that will give the pups a much needed break and try a regroup for next week against powerhouse Langwarrin. The development lead early and looked like they would take home a win but let it slip in the second half, They will look to get on the board early and redeem themselves this week!!

Netball Not the best day either for the Netballers coming up a strong Somerville outfit across all grades.

Can't see any team beating their A Grade with their 6.6 goaler, Candace and Alex jump all day but couldn't get close. Again they come up against a club that is very strong from top to bottom in Chelsea, but the girls will give it their all, I know!

Women's Football Well the girls came crashing down last week with their first losses of the season to Coburg (Div1) and Cerberus (Div 3) but they will dust themselves off and look forward to their first home game together on Sunday. Make sure you get one down as they have PINK day to help raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer. We have junior girls in the morning and the womens side play at 11am and 1pm. Canteen and Bar will be open. Pink merch for sale and the good old raffle!

MORNINGTON FOOTBALL DISASTER 130th Anniversary In 1892, Mornington Football Club was just four years old and Collingwood had just formed and joined the League.

A game was organised between Mornington and Mordialloc for the then Queen’s Birthday weekend on 21st May. Carl Hooper was a fisherman and also a member of the footy club. He had just had a competition rig put onto his boat Process and was keen to use it. He offered to take the team up to Mordialloc; being young lads they eagerly accepted. The game was played and resulted in a nil all draw. Remember this was still early days of footy.

The players were farewelled from Mordialloc Pier and joined by Charlie Allchin who had come from town.

Another player gave up his seat for Charlie and travelled home by train.

The weather forecast was fine and the passengers on the boat sang songs which could be heard at Frankston as they went.

When they went by Olivers Hill something happened, either a squall (which we know can happen fast on Port Phillip Bay), or a shift in the weight. The mainsail broke and the boat capsized. These fit young men could swim.

They were dressed in heavy mostly woollen clothing but hypothermia took over. All fifteen on board drowned.

While Rev. Caldwell broke down giving his sermon on the Sunday morning (he had lost three boys), a flotilla of boats went out looking for the Process. It was found upturned on Pelican Reef off Davey’s Bay, Mt. Eliza by a big sailing boat Wanderer.

They found the naked body of Alfred Lawrence tangled in the rigging. Only three other bodies were found on the beaches over the next weeks, one at Rosebud/Rye. Fundraisers were held all over the country. There was a match at the MCG, Broken Hill had over a thousand to a match and many others contributed. The funds would go to families and the remainder helped build the memorial.

Apart from the three Caldwell boys, the Grover family lost a son and a brother, Carl Hooper and his young son were also lost. The full list is on the Memorial.
