TASTE AND
FALL IN LOVE
Hiding in plain sight in the central city for 10 years plus, Japanz Bakery is now in the South City Centre. Offering coffee, Japanese specialities, plus local favourites infused with Japanese flavours, this bakery has taste sensations and new food experiences to tempt the most jaded Kiwi palates.
M
akiko Lyoda says the food is all created on the premises by her husband Takuya and two chefs. Proud of every product they sell Makiko says, “just taste one item and you will fall in love”. You could spark up Christmas this year with a Japanz Christmas cake. Each cake is decorated with Santa and Mrs Clause, and Makiko offers three different flavours: fruit, green tea, and chocolate. Fruit is the most popular flavour with layers of sponge, interspersed with layers of fruit and custard cream, with fresh cream on the outside. However, the green tea is not to be missed, with decadent
sponge interlaced with fragrant green tea and red bean paste, which Makiko says is like a jam. The chocolate flavour features ganache with sponge and Makiko says, “it is not overly sweet and appeals to most people”. Makiko recommends pre-ordering for Christmas. The cakes are for sale by the slice in the cabinet for you to try before you choose. Japanz offers Christmas cookie gift packs with prices that range from $11.70 to $77.00. The gift boxes come with ribbon and decoration and in five sizes. If you order by December 10 and collect by December 22, you will receive a $10 gift voucher with every $50 spent. Meri Kurisumasu!
