Anytime day or night, you can register for your favorite classes at the Melrose YMCA! Your Y Online Account will allow you to access our online registration system and will ensure your privacy and credit card security. As always, you can register in person at our Welcome Center. All classes fill on a first-come, first-served basis. Class size is limited, therefore, it is wise to register early. HEALTHY LIVING ADULT FITNESS Progressive Resistance Training Get stronger with more muscle definition by gradually and safely increasing your resistance (weight load) in this progressive body sculpting class. If you have been resistance training for a while and are not seeing results, this class is for you.

Young at Heart-Senior Fitness

You will be walked through an “at your own pace” exercise program utilizing a variety of cardio machines, Nautilus and Strive equipment.

Progressive TRX This class is a TRX series in which you will start from the basics of TRX and progress each week into more complex exercises. Each week, exercises from the previous class will be reinforced and a new series of exercises will be introduced to develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability using the TRX Suspension Trainer. Pre and post session body composition analysis will also be included in this class. See how TRX Training can impact your body composition and fitness level.

Wudang Tai Chuan & Qigong This unique style of Tai Chi and Qigong, is flowing, dynamic, powerful, gentle, and utilizes both the external body and one’s inner energy in its practice. Olga Arnold, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, will help to dispel the confusing and mixed information about food, diets and health in our media. HEALTHY LIVING Kung Fu for Young Dragons (8-12 years)

GROUP EXERCISE

A beginning Kung Fu course for ages 8 – 12 that features elements of White Dragon Fist Kung Fu and Wudang Style Kung Fu. Class members will learn basic techniques and exercises, beginning level Kung Fu forms, and some basic self-defense and applications. Respect, good manners, communication skills, discipline, and non-violent conflict resolution will be emphasized and taught as key components of true martial arts training and personal expression. Kung Fu training develops self confidence and good interpersonal skills as class members share the fun, excitement, and challenges with their fellow students.

NEW Competitive Men’s Basketball League

5 on 5 men’s basketball league, teams supply their own jerseys with number on back. The league is 10 weeks long and includes 8 regular season games and 2 playoff games. PRENATAL & NEW MOM Pre-natal Yoga

This class is especially designed for expecting mothers. All fitness levels and stages of pregnancy are welcome. Our certified instructor will guide you through traditional yoga moves creating a relaxing mind body experience while paying special attention to the needs of the expectant mothers. Come join the Melrose Family YMCA for an evening filled with fun on the ice. Super Bowl Party

Before the big game kicks off on Super Bowl Sunday, bring the family down to the Melrose YMCA Gymnasium for some quick football fun. We will have helmets to decorate with your favorite team’s colors, as well as flags to color and create for the game! If you want to get into the football spirit come on by for a morning of fun football action! This event is FREE for members. SPLASH WEEK

YMCA Splash is a campaign to help teach kids how to be safer around water. It will help kids overcome fears they might have and will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment. Each day will have daily themes from pool safety, backyard pool, boating safety, beach safety, and water park and diving safety. For more information, contact Vicky Brienza at ext.18.

Kidstock! Creative Theater

Celebrate Dr. Suess month at the Melrose Y! Kidstock! brings it's unique interactive theater experience to the YMCA. Come and join Kidstock's Actor/Educator for DR SEUSS STORIES: Lessons of friendship and teamwork address issues of bullying, protecting the environment and making a difference with an active presentation of THE SNEETCHES, THE LORAX and HORTON HEARS A WHO. All in attendance will have the chance to be involved either through audience "call and response" or by volunteering to get "in on the act" as characters in a story. This event is FREE for members. Children will learn basic dance movements to child friendly music from the United States and other countries. We will also share games that keep kids moving as well as information about geography and other cultures.

Children will practice basic cooking skills to create fantastic foods, play dough etc. Samples of the children's cooking will be sent home with the recipe so that the whole family can enjoy the process.

Splat! (1.5-3 years)

This class is for the young child who loves to let loose and make a mess! Many different materials are used to play in and make works of art. Parents are required to be present during class, as this one gets messy! Kids (and adults too) should bring their own clothing protection.

Hop-Skip-Read (2-3 years)

A fun interactive time where you will run, hop, skip and jump through games that will develop gross motor skills. Class will finish each week with a story, perfect for the young child who may get tired out after a ½ hour of play.

Alphabet Soup (2-4 years)

Your child will explore the alphabet through a story, craft, and/or song! This class is perfect for the child who can follow instruction and is interested in stories, art, song and the alphabet. This class is best suited for the child who can hold a writing tool and form basic shapes and letters.

Mini Chef (4-5 years)

Learn to make easy and healthy no-bake snacks!

Pint Size Painting (1.5-3 years)

Toddlers will get the chance to create freely, with an instructor, based on the story they hear. Children will receive various supplies to allow for creative thinking and inspire their artistic skills. This class strengthens gross motor skills, listening and interpretation. Class will start with a story, focus on painting, and end with clean-up and creative play time.

Messy Play (2-3 years)

Enjoy painting, watercolors, chalk, play dough, glitter and glue. Smocks or old clothes are required.

Older Baby Drop-in Play Group (9-18 months)

Musical play for active and mobile babies and toddlers. Mamas, daddies and caretakers will participate in songs, musical games and fun play. Activities include lap rides, horsey rides, animal songs, counting songs, dancing songs, and more! We love to learn and share so bring your little one and a willingness to play and sing!

New Mom and Baby Small Group (Up to 8 months)

A chance to get out of the house and sing to your little one! Whether they are tiny and new or advanced and alert, your baby will have fun signing songs and playing games that will get their little hands and feet moving, while working a few muscles too! We sing plenty of traditional songs you may already know and new ones you may not.

The main focus of Jump Shots is to teach fun in the sport of basketball. Learn ball control, passing, shooting, and the general rules of the game.

Youth Soccer (3-5 years)

This class teaches basic fundamentals, teamwork, and fun with a ball at your feet. This class uses imaginative games and silly play to introduce your preschooler to the fun game of soccer!

T-Ball (3-5 years)

This class teaches the basic fundamentals of throwing, fielding, and hitting off a tee. This class uses imaginative games and silly play to introduce your preschooler to the fun game of baseball.

Flag Football (6-9 years)

Earn the basic fundamentals like how to grip, throw, and catch a football. Drills focus on pass routes and agility techniques.

Youth Gym and Swim (7-10 years)

Love games in the gym and then playing in the pool? Games in the gym will get the kids’ hearts pumping for 30 minutes, then the instructor will escort them to the pool for a 40 minute lesson. This class is a two-for-one-fun!

Monday 3:30-5:00pm

Kinder Gym and Swim (3-5 years)

This hour long class combines fun in the pool and in the gym! In the gym, we provide experiences which help your child develop physical and social skills and in the pool, your child will participate in our group preschool swim lesson, grouped according to ability lesson. The gym will come first followed by swim (kids must wear their swimsuit to gym class, and the instructor will bring them directly to the pool deck).

Nerf Blasters (8-10 years)

This exciting class challenges students physically and mentally in an environment that promotes fitness through entertainment. Speed, accuracy and teamwork will be taught to improve their ability to think on their feet, react to changing circumstances, and communicate effectively as a team. This class is ideal for the kid who loves paintball or laser-tag.

Dodge Ball (7-10 years)

This high energy class will challenge students to their physical peak in an environment that promotes fun and fitness. Using a variety of different games each week, students will be challenged to work together as a team and also as individuals. If you are looking for a fun, competitive, and challenging class then Dodge Ball is the ideal choice!

Floor Hockey (6-9 years)

Practice proper stick handling techniques, passing and shooting while learning the rules of game.

Thursday 3:00-3:45pm

Mini All-Stars (3-5 years)

This class offers different sports/ games each week. The emphasis will be on gross motor movement and cooperation. While the focus of the games will be sports, the kids will have fun in imagination based warm-ups, stretching and cool down games. This class is perfect for the child who is able to follow directions and have fun in a group of peers.

SWIM WATER FITNESS CLASSES Aqua Zumba

Integrating the Zumba formula with traditional aqua fitness, this class is a safe and challenging water-based workout that’s cardio, body-toning and FUN!

PRIVATE LESSONS

Private lessons are a great way to learn to swim or improve stroke techniques. Each lesson lasts 30 minutes. PRESCHOOL Preschool Open Gym (crawlers-4 years)

Supervised but not structured time for your preschoolers to run, jump and climb over age appropriate equipment. Active adult participation is required. Families may register up to three kids per adult. There is no babysitting available for this class. There will be a designated area for participants under the age of 18 months. All participants on the floor must be registered for the class. Siblings that remain in infant carriers for the duration of the class need not register.

All gymnastics classes are held at the Gymnastics Center, 156 Tremont Street, Melrose. Age is based on the first day of the session, sorry no exceptions! It is recommended for gymnasts of all ages to wear a leotard, if possible (sweatpants and tucked in T-shirt are appropriate for boys). All participants must have bare feet and hair must be pulled back tightly for class.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FUN FRIDAY MIDDLE SCHOOL EVENTS

Every Friday throughout the school year, the Melrose YMCA and Melrose Recreation Department will be running events and activities for Middle School students. Chaperones and volunteers are needed for all events! In interested, please contact the Melrose Recreation Department or the Melrose YMCA.

1st Friday of Month Common Ground Teen Center at Melrose Y

The Common Ground is open and FREE to all Melrose teens in grades 6-8 and is located at the Melrose Y. Qualified staff supervise the center and coordinate activities. The center offers a safe environment for teens to hang out with friends and provides billiards, ping pong, air hockey, video games, computers, and so much more. A full size gym is used for basketball, dodge ball, volleyball and other games. Each Common Ground night will feature a new theme. Pizza will be provided for $1 a slice.

2nd Friday of Month Teen Trip Night

Join us for one of our Teen Trip Nights! We will be leaving from the Melrose Middle School at 7pm and taking registered participants on field trips to fun destinations. All trips cost $10 and include bus transportation and entry fees.

3rd Friday of Month Middle School Dance Night 4th Friday of Month Wild Card Teen Night

My Y is Every Y: Use any facility Y in New England. We are for healthy living and we want you to stay active and keep moving. We have now made sure there is a Y wherever you are! Your Y card now provides you free access to any facility in New England. Simply bring your facility/full privilege membership card and a photo ID with you, and you can check into any partner Y in Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. You can then utilize their gym, pool, fitness, and other wellness facilities, just like any other member! We simply ask that you maintain a current membership at the Y you visit most frequently. WE RECYCLE AT THE Y!

Please join us in helping our planet by placing your bottles and cans in our recycling containers located throughout our facility. In addition, there is a paper recycling dumpster located at our child care facility at 106 Main Street, Melrose, where we recycle as much paper as possible from our offices and program departments. You can join us in our efforts by recycling paper from your home or office there as well. The Melrose Y receives a donation to our Growing Stronger Together Campaign for all the paper recycled.
