Bringing Street Art Energy Inside the Dali Museum

Outside In: New Murals Inspired by Dalí

The latest exhibition at the Dali Museum bridges the vision of Salvador Dalí with the energy of contemporary street art, showcasing original large-scale murals by celebrated participants in St. Petersburg’s internationally recognized SHINE Mural Festival

SHINE has transformed the city’s public spaces into an open-air gallery and in celebration of its 10-year anniversary, The Dalí has commissioned artists from near and far to create new works inside the Museum inspired by Dalí, his art and the Museum’s iconic architecture.

“Museums aim to be porous—what is out in the world must find its way into a museum,” said Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director of The Dalí Museum. “With the exhibition Outside In, we bring the immediacy and ambitious size of street murals into the gallery to be examined in a new way—within the controlled atmosphere and sense of anticipation that only a museum setting can provide.”

“Murals are more than just decoration—they are statements, stories and expressions of public imagination,” said Allison McCarthy, Associate Curator at The Dalí Museum and curator of the special exhibit.

My Weekend Power Trip

The Audi Q6 e-tron Quattro

As you step into the Audi Q6 e-tron Quattro, surrounded by stunning flat screens and a futuristic heads-up display, you might just feel like you’re soaring in a jet. When you accelerate, you discover that might be true. This eco-friendly electric vehicle isn’t just a performance machine. With ample seating for five and a generous amount of cargo space, the Q6 is a true chameleon. Whether you’re running errands, grabbing a night on the town, or enjoying a family trip to the beaches, this car can transform into anything you need with just a few taps on the touchscreen. My test weekend with Morgan Import Motorcars, Audi Tampa, was perfect, going from interstate driving to a dressed-up night on the town. Visibility for

lane changing on the highway and city parallel parking was great and assisted by the cameras and monitoring system. The ride can be customized to your preferences and conditions with multiple driving mode settings. A color-coded interior lens change colors for each of the power modes, adding extra drama as you switch from comfort to sport mode before take-off. You tend to forget you are driving an EV, which I think is a good thing. The visual cues, seat comfort, and handling are what you have come to expect from Audi. Unlike so many EVs, the Q6 e-tron is much more than an empty dash and a giant iPad screen. This is a luxury SUV that just so happens to be electric. Nothing has been compromised.

I know many of us have a certain concern about how far you can travel and what to do about powering back up. No need to worry; the Audi Q6 does a great job of letting you know how much “gas” you have remaining and how many miles you can expect to go. The regenerative braking captures so much power in-town that you can really extend the available miles. Charging options are easy and plentiful. The on-screen system can identify charging locations and even assist you in planning extended summer road trips.

The Audi Q6 has proven to me that you don’t have to sacrifice quality and luxury to enjoy the benefits of EV ownership.

Escape to Botanical Bliss

A Day Trip to Selby Gardens

Just an hour from Tampa Bay, you’ll find a tropical oasis that feels worlds away. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota is celebrating more than 50 years of beauty, science, and innovation — and there’s never been a better time to visit. With two lush campuses, breathtaking bay views, and world-class plant collections, Selby Gardens is the ultimate nature-meets-culture getaway.

The big news? Phase One of Selby’s Master Plan is officially complete — and it’s impressive. Thanks to major donor support, the Sarasota campus now features a stunning 50,000-square-foot solar array (making it the world’s first botanical garden complex), expanded gardens, and a gorgeous new restaurant: The Green Orchid by Michael’s On East. The rooftop garden even supplies ingredients for the seasonal, garden-to-table menu.

Other new highlights include the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF) with more parking, vertical gardens, and an eco-friendly gift shop. Inside the new Steinwachs Family Plant Research Center, visitors get a peek into behind-the-scenes science. You’ll find the Elaine Nicpon Marieb Herbarium with over 125,000 pressed plant specimens, and a spirit laboratory collection with more than 45,000 fluidpreserved botanical samples — the second largest in the world!

A stop at the open-air Jean Goldstein Welcome Center sets the tone for the day, leading you into new garden spaces like the Lily Pond Garden and Glades Garden, plus a beautifully restored Palm Avenue promenade.

And the momentum continues — fundraising for Phase Two is already 83 percent complete, with plans to break ground later this year on a hurricane-resilient conservatory, learning pavilion, and expanded gardens.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens – Welcome Center

“We have tremendous gratitude for everyone who believes in the mission and we are excited to embark on the next phase,” said Rominiecki. “Phase two allows for expanded displays of our collection, which will be on view to the public. Together, we are committed to creating innovative educational facilities and safeguarding our natural heritage for future generations.”

Whether you’re wandering the tropical conservatory, strolling the bayfront, or letting kids explore the rainforest garden, the 15-acre downtown campus is pure botanical magic. Or, take a detour to the Historic Spanish Point campus, where native plantings and pioneer history blend into peaceful nature trails along Sarasota Bay.

Make a full day of it: explore, unwind, and enjoy lunch at The Green Orchid, where every dish is inspired by the gardens themselves. M

Wandering Through Budapest A Journey Through History, Culture & Thermal Bliss

Tucked along the banks of the Danube River in Central Europe, Budapest offers a rich, multifaceted experience that blends old-world charm with cosmopolitan flair. As the capital of Hungary, the city stands as a stunning showcase of Gothic, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau architecture, woven together with the cultural legacy of Roman, Ottoman, and Austro-Hungarian influences. With its grand bridges, therapeutic hot springs, and storybook streets, Budapest is a destination that enchants history

buffs, food lovers, and wellness seekers alike. We visited Budapest in the shoulder season of April—an ideal time with mild weather and fewer crowds. Our trip was both a personal and cultural exploration, inspired by my husband’s Hungarian ancestry. We found a country steeped in resilience and tradition, shaped by the tides of history—from Nazi occupation after World War I to decades of Soviet rule—and yet it remains vibrant, artistic, and incredibly welcoming.

Hungarian National Gallery at Buda Castle
View of Parliment from Buda Hill

Where History Meets the Hills

One of our first stops was Gellért Hill, home to the Gellért Hill Cave Church (Sziklatemplom). This extraordinary Catholic church is carved directly into the rock and was inspired by a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. Originally constructed in 1250, the church has endured centuries of upheaval. During Soviet rule in the 1950s, the chapel was sealed off, only to be restored and reopened to the public in 1989. With the help of an audio guide, visitors can learn about the monks of the Pauline order and the chapel’s compelling history.

Just across the street is one of Budapest’s best-known landmarks: the Gellért Thermal Bath, located in the historic Hotel Gellért. Opened in 1918, the bath exemplifies why Budapest is known as the “City of Thermal Baths.” With 123 natural hot springs and more than two dozen thermal bathhouses, the city is a haven for wellness enthusiasts. We recommend visiting early in the day to avoid the crowds and enjoy a relaxing soak in serenity.

Bridges, Bazaars & Beautiful Views

The city is split by the Danube River into two parts—Buda and Pest—connected by a series of iconic bridges. The Liberty Bridge, originally completed in 1849, was rebuilt after its destruction in World War II. The Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Budapest’s oldest and perhaps most famous bridge, provides pedestrian access to panoramic views and leads directly to the Buda Castle Hill Funicular. Meanwhile, Elisabeth Bridge, named after a beloved queen, spans the narrowest part of the Danube.

On the Pest side, don’t miss Central Market Hall, Budapest’s largest and oldest indoor market. Established in 1817, it’s a bustling spot filled with fresh produce, sausages, local breads, sweets, and, of course, paprika in every form imaginable.

Sacred Spaces & Castle Views

Among the most awe-inspiring landmarks is St. Stephen’s Basilica, a Neoclassical masterpiece and the largest church in the city. Named after Hungary’s first king—whose mummified right hand is kept in the reliquary—the Basilica stuns with its interior mosaics and rooftop views. We were lucky to witness a wedding taking place, adding a layer of magic to our visit.

Another must-see is the Fisherman’s Bastion, located in the heart of the Castle District near Buda Castle. Built in the early 20th century, its seven ornate towers symbolize the chieftains who founded Hungary in 895. From here, you can take in sweeping views of the Danube and Pest side. Just steps away is Matthias Church, a Catholic church with roots dating back to 1015, whose colorful roof tiles and Gothic spires dominate the skyline.

The Buda Castle, once home to Hungarian kings, now houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the National Széchényi Library—all worth a visit for those who appreciate art and history.

Dining Through Budapest

Hungarian cuisine is both hearty and flavorful. From breakfast cappuccinos with avocado bagels to traditional lunches of beer and goulash, each meal was an experience. No two bowls of goulash were alike, though all were delicious—filled with tender beef, potatoes, paprika, and vegetables. We also savored local dumplings and desserts in cozy restaurants like Pipa Etterem, just steps from the Central Market Hall.

Among our standout meals was a five-course Hungarian tasting menu with wine pairings at Tati, a Michelin 2024 restaurant. In the Jewish Quarter, Mazel Tov delivered fresh, vibrant fare— from creamy hummus to sizzling grilled dishes. Near the Parliament, we stumbled upon Rose Meze & Cocktail Bar, where we enjoyed hand-crafted cocktails in a beautifully designed space.

Ruin Bars & Remembrance

When night falls, the city comes alive in the Ruin Bar District—a network of abandoned buildings transformed into eclectic watering holes. Szimpla Kert, the original ruin bar, is a must-visit. Yes, there may be a line, but a little cash and charm can go a long way toward getting you inside for a night of music, dancing, and people-watching.

Amidst the fun, Budapest doesn’t shy away from its somber past. A visit to the Shoes on the Danube Bank—a haunting memorial honoring Jewish victims killed during World War II—is a powerful and emotional experience. Sculpted iron shoes line the riverbank, marking where thousands were shot and their bodies swept away. For a deeper dive into Hungary’s history, we recommend a visit to the House of Terror, which documents the impact of 20th-century regimes on the Hungarian people.

Budapest is a city of contrasts and harmony—where history is honored, healing is ritual, and every cobblestone seems to tell a story. From soaking in thermal waters to walking the solemn streets of remembrance, our journey through Hungary’s capital left us with full hearts, a deeper understanding of its past, and a longing to return.

Whether you’re exploring your ancestry or discovering it anew, Budapest is a place where every traveler can feel connected—to the city, to the culture, and to the magic of the moment.

Where to Stay

Budapest offers a wide range of accommodations, but two stood out:

• Hotel Vision Budapest: This boutique property boasts just 82 modern rooms, a prime location along the Danube, and amenities like a relaxing spa and live music in its Spanish tapas restaurant. www.hotelvision.hu

• Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace: As the only Forbes Five-Star hotel in Hungary, it dazzles with its Art Nouveau architecture, grand lobby, and luxurious service. www.fourseasons.com/budapest M

Dockside Luxury: A Modern Coastal Home With Timeless Style

Alove for boating and the dream of waterfront living led a South Tampa family to search for the perfect lot back in 2020. What they found was an ideal piece of land in the coveted Sunset Park neighborhood — quiet, private, and perfectly positioned on the water. The result is a custombuilt, coastal contemporary residence that feels more like a luxury resort than a private home.

Spanning 4,213 square feet, the two-story home features five bedrooms, six baths, and a seamless blend of indooroutdoor living. Designed with entertaining and relaxed Florida living in mind, the layout prioritizes open spaces, wide hallways, and abundant natural light. The aesthetic is crisp and breezy, with a coastal palette and subtle West Indies influence.

From nearly every angle inside the home, the water views are center stage. Manatees, dolphins, and coastal birds make frequent appearances just beyond the backyard dock, offering a serene backdrop for a morning coffee or an evening cocktail on the upper deck.

At the heart of the home is a gourmet kitchen, outfitted with high-end Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, double ovens, and a six-burner gas cooktop. An oversized island provides both prep space and seating for casual dining. The adjacent dining room features a striking illuminated wine wall, offering both storage and a showpiece for the couple’s collection.

Meticulous craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the detailed custom millwork and trim to the thoughtfully selected finishes—lighting, door hardware, and cabinetry—all chosen to remain timeless and elegant as styles evolve.

The primary suite offers a true retreat, with a spa-style bath that includes a rain shower, soaking tub, and a double vanity. Custom-built closets maximize space and function, while a private balcony provides peaceful water views— evoking the feel of an island getaway, right at home.

The dock area flows naturally from the pool deck, maximizing every inch of the oversized lot and creating a true backyard paradise.

Of course, no waterfront home is complete without a proper dock. The brand-new setup includes a 10,000-pound boat lift, making it easy to enjoy a spontaneous sunset cruise or fishing trip at a moment’s notice. M

Mountain Adventure And Charm

Discovering the Unexpected in West Virginia

When the invitation to visit West Virginia came through, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. As someone used to Tampa Bay’s sunny shores, the Mountain State felt like a mystery. But after four days of exploring everything from rugged trails to refined cocktails, I was more than pleasantly surprised—I was enchanted.

It’s either a 13-hour scenic road trip or a quick direct flight on Breeze Airways into Charleston, WV. The airport is refreshingly small, with just three gates, making arrivals and departures a so easy.

Our adventure began at ACE Adventure Resort, tucked into the heart of the Appalachian wilderness. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with friends, or with the whole family, ACE has it all— tent camping, RV sites, and fully furnished private cabins, each with a deck, hot tub,

and fire pit. ACE is also your basecamp for thrills, offering guided rafting, ziplining, mountain biking, and more.

The crown jewel of the area is the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, America’s newest national park. We tackled the Lower New River Gorge with expert guides from ACE, braving class III to V rapids after recent rains gave the river extra flow. The views of the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, once the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the world, are breathtaking—especially after hiking the Endless Wall Trail with Adventures on the Gorge. I’ll never forget it—not just for the views, but because my hiking boots disintegrated halfway through. Thanks to our guide Rodney for getting me through practically barefoot and to the top of Diamond Point Overlook.

West Virginia isn’t just about the outdoors—the food scene is thriving. The first night, we hit Smokey’s On The Gorge for wings, sandwiches, and pimento cheese hush puppies with sweeping canyon views. After rafting, Secret Sandwich Society impressed with homemade everything—from pickles to chips—and unforgettable pimento cheese fries.

A highlight was sipping craft cocktails at Rosa’s Speakeasy, hidden inside the 1902 Morris Harvey House. Antique charm meets modern mixology here. Just a short walk away, Pies & Pints served up imaginative pizzas and local brews. And don’t leave Fayetteville without breakfast at Cathedral Cafe—a former church turned cozy café. The espresso coffee cake? Worth the trip alone.

In Charleston, the capital city is seeing a cultural revival thanks to leaders like Mayor Amy Goodwin and Tim Brady of the CVB. Capitol Market is a vibrant hub of local produce, flowers, wine, and artisan goods. It’s a nonprofit with heart—supporting small businesses, local famers and bringing community together.

Foodies should make a reservation at 1010 Bridge, where Chef Paul Smith— West Virginia’s first James Beard Award winner—puts a refined Appalachian twist on every dish. His next spot, Pauly’s, is one to watch.

We also took a step back in time at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, where a retired miner shared firsthand stories of life underground. It’s an eye-opening tribute to the region’s coal history.

Our trip ended on a high note with a live taping of Mountain Stage, a nationally broadcast music show from NPR. From bluegrass to country, the talent was top-tier—and the energy was pure Appalachian soul. M
