Dear Guests,
May is a time of celebration and new beginnings at the Metropolitan Library System. As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain grounded in our mission to serve the community with connection, creativity and opportunity for all. This month is filled with exciting programs and cultural celebrations that reflect the energy and diversity of our library system.
We’re proud to honor Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with a rich variety of events across our libraries. From the rhythm of Taiko drumming and the beauty of Philippine weaving to mesmerizing lion dances and hands-on Suminagashi art, these programs celebrate the cultures and contributions of Asian Pacific American communities. Join us as we learn, connect and celebrate together.
GeekCon returns to the Downtown OKC Library Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it’s going to be bigger and bolder than ever! This all-ages celebration of geek culture includes Star Trek trivia, a cosplay contest, and the debut of Cardboardlandia—a massive, hands-on cardboard construction zone that sparks creativity in kids and adults alike. Whether you’re into superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy or fandoms, GeekCon is your chance to let your geek flag fly.
May is also the perfect time to explore the hidden gems in our Special Collections, from Oklahoma’s unique history and culture to genealogy tools and historical interviews. Visit online or in person to connect with the past and uncover forgotten stories.
And just around the corner is one of our most anticipated programs of the year: Summer Reading! Beginning June 1, this free community-wide initiative encourages readers of all ages to read, explore and grow all summer long. With fun activities, cool incentives and easy ways to track your progress, it’s a great way to keep minds sharp and curious—especially for kids during school break.
We’re also excited to announce that Ralph Ellison Library will reopen on May 6 with brand-new shelving and refreshed spaces, and we’re continuing progress on our second Edmond Library location—another exciting step forward in our commitment to access and innovation. Your library is growing, evolving and celebrating alongside you. Thank you for being part of our journey.

The Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. Collection is fresh as a daisy as the newest addition to Special Collections and Research. Previously housed at Will Rogers Gardens, the collection is turning a new leaf and replanting its storied roots in our archives. The assortment of donated scrapbooks and council member books reflects the expansive and colorful history of the oldest garden club in Oklahoma.
On Sept. 17, 1921, The Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. was officially created by 15 charter members with rose-colored glasses who all shared a vision to create the first “Garden Flower Club” in Oklahoma. The group was modeled after the first Garden Flower Club in the nation, founded in 1891 in Athens, Georgia. The flower of the flock, Mrs. J.E. Hoopes, affectionately known by the club as “Mother Hoopes,” assumed the role of president and worked tirelessly with other inaugural officers to spring into action and gain the support of the Oklahoma City Parks Board. The group's early efforts included the establishment of wildflower sanctuaries in Lincoln Park and Will Rogers Park (formerly known as Northwest Park).
The Garden Flower Club grew from a flower in the desert to a group so large that smaller “units” had to be formed to accommodate the growing membership. Each new unit represented a different flower of choice, such as the Blue Flower Unit (May 1924), Iris, Red Rose, Wildflower, Gladiolus and
Narcissus Units (1925). In 1926, the Wisteria (first South Oklahoma City Unit) and Shasta Daisy Units were formed. By 1937-1938, the Garden Flower Club was comprised of 38 member clubs with the cities of Bethany, Britton, Harrah and Jones included in the civic organization.
Will Rogers Park played a significant role in the founding and legacy of The Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. A bed of roses for the club, both figuratively and literally, Will Rogers Park established the Oklahoma City Municipal Rose Garden in 1938. The park planted 11,000 roses on four acres, making it the fourth largest rose garden in the nation at the time. The rose garden at Will Rogers Park is now known as the Charles E. Sparks Color Garden, named after a former founding member of the Oklahoma Rose Society and Oklahoma City Parks Superintendent. The Oklahoma Rose Society was one of the many branches of the Garden Flower Clubs and still exists today. In 1938, the Garden Exhibition Building in Will Rogers Park was built as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project and was created specifically for the garden club. The building was equipped with a community library and served as a center for civic beautification, nature conservation, and gardening activities and ideas to take root and flourish.
Over the course of its existence, the club proved to be no average grandmother’s club. The group was a groundbreaker in the Oklahoma City area for promoting environmental stewardship, conserving natural resources, educating the public about the importance of natural pollinators and native plants and trees, and continually working to make the city and surrounding areas a beautiful and sustainable place for everyone. The group’s civic duties have included hosting a weekly radio program on KOCY every Thursday morning, organizing the Flower Exhibit at the State Fair, and showcasing the fruits of the group’s labor at the annual Spring Flower Show held each May. The group’s oath, also officially known as the “Conservation Pledge,” states: “I give my pledge as an American to save and to faithfully defend from waste the natural resources of my country- its soil and minerals, its forests, water and wildlife.”

"The Ministry of Time"
Kaliane Bradley
Available formats: Book, Audiobook CD, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook
Sometimes you read a book so perfectly attuned to your tastes that you cannot fathom anyone giving it less than five stars. This seems to be a book that people either love or hate but I adored “The Ministry of Time,” by Kaliane Bradley. Does a sci-fi dramedy spy thriller, mixed with a heart-wrenching romance with an obscure historical figure sound interesting to you? Then I highly recommend you pick this up or argue over it at your book club.
I don’t read a lot of traditional science fiction but one of my favorite series is the Oxford time travel series by Connie Willis. I think if you enjoyed that, or you dabble in “Doctor Who,” this will be perfect for you.

When aliens invade Earth, every structure on the planet is immediately flattened. Those lucky enough to be outdoors and survive are given the option of entering a massive 18-level dungeon to play for their lives in a sadistic game broadcast to the universe. Carl and his ex-girlfriend's now sentient cat, Princess Donut, enter the labyrinth.
The cast of characters in this unhinged epic series grows to include every conceivable kind of alien or video game character. If you've never read a book like this before, welcome to the world of Lit RPGs. The literary role-playing game genre centers around main characters who are participating in a game-like world, combining a traditional narrative plot with the intense mechanics seen in virtual or tabletop role-playing games. Dungeon Crawler Carl is hilarious and perfect for gamers, Dungeons and Dragons rule hounds, or those just looking for something a little bizarre.

As a long-distance daughter, I cherish my daily morning calls with my mom where we get to share snippets of our lives during our commutes. Yet, for as often as we speak, some topics are difficult for me to talk about with her. And that is why the title of this collection of essays – “What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About,” caught my eye.
Fifteen writers capture the multifaceted nature of relationships with “Mom.” The essays are extremely personal with some expressing warmth and affection, while others delve into the deep wounds around the experience they have with their mother. You’ll be reminded that no matter the distance or the unspoken words, the connections that we have with our mothers play an important role in who we are.
“What My Mother and I Don’t Talk About,” is a comforting reminder that regardless of the complexities in our relationships, we’re not alone in our experiences. Whether you’re excited to celebrate your mom on Mother’s Day or that day is marked by silence or grief, each essay is an invitation to reflect on the unique journey we share with our moms.

Life is complicated. Catie is resilient.
It is the end of Catie’s junior year; her father has died, and her desire to learn about her Taiwanese roots is stronger than ever. Her adoptive mother has just moved Catie and her adopted sister to Salt Lake City to live with their devotedly Mormon extended family for the summer, where there are better job opportunities than San Diego.
Catie lands a job quickly, where she meets Toby; a coworker at the salon who can teach her Mandarin, her native language. In return, she agrees to be his dating coach using the book, the “Five Love Languages,” which was her father’s favorite book and one he read to her often. Has she ever had a date…no.
This well-written, coming-of-age story has lots of twists and turns and touches on many sensitive topics that you might not expect; religious beliefs, homosexuality, ancestry, etc. It sheds light on how young adults view tough situations, and how with creative resilience we can all survive. You will not be able to put it down!

For more than 90 years, the Metropolitan Library System has encouraged Oklahomans to keep reading through the summer months. What began in the 1920s as a simple "vacation reading" initiative has grown into a systemwide program that engages children, teens and adults with books, activities and prizes designed to make reading fun.
The program’s history reflects its evolution alongside the community it serves. In 1931, young readers were issued reading passports, and by the 1960s, personalized book lists became a staple. A "Reading Regatta" took place in Warr Acres in 1970, and by the mid-1970s, a unified theme tied the entire system together. Partnerships with local businesses also emerged, including Dairy Queen’s introduction as a reading reward sponsor in 1975. The program expanded again in 2002 to include a teenspecific challenge, and in 2014, adults joined the fun, and, more recently, with participants being able to track their reading in the Beanstack app, the Summer Reading program has continued to thrive. Today, it remains a beloved community tradition designed to encourage lifelong literacy.
“The library's goal with Summer Reading is to foster a community of readers,” said Emily Williams, Teen Services Manager. “A love of reading comes from the kinds of transformative experiences you have while reading, when empathy and understanding are fostered or when you make connections and think critically, generating a habit of lifelong learning.”
The library’s goal is to foster a community of readers across all age groups. For early childhood participants, Summer Reading highlights pre-reading skills, helping parents understand that activities like talking, singing and playing all contribute to literacy development. Some families even sign-up babies in utero, counting the time spent reading aloud during pregnancy.
For school-aged children, the program helps combat the “summer slide,” where students can lose academic progress when they are not engaged in learning. Research suggests that children who do not participate in summer learning can fall up to two years behind their peers by sixth grade. The library’s program keeps reading enjoyable, allowing kids to explore topics that interest them.
“Students participating in Summer Reading may find it a helpful way to build confidence in reading skills, and that reading skills they gained over the school year are maintained instead of lost,” Williams said.
Reading isn’t just for kids—adults can (and should!) join in, too. Summer Reading is for all ages, and everyone can earn prizes while enjoying the benefits of reading—whether it’s books, audiobooks, graphic novels or more. Teens can also get involved by volunteering at the library as part of Summer Reading and celebrating their hard work at a big party at the end of summer.
“Summer Reading is a great opportunity to take some time for yourself and read just for fun,” Williams said. “Pick up that book you've been wanting to read forever.”
600-Point Goal: Every minute read counts for one point, and participants can earn up to 100 point through literacy activities and continue reading beyond the goal for additional prize entries.
Prizes for All Ages: Once readers reach the 600-point milestone, they can choose from two youth books, one adult book, or a Metro Library tote bag. Prize pickup runs from June 1 to July 31, with drawing winners announced in August.
Beanstack App: Readers can track their progress easily using the Beanstack app, which offers a reading session timer, barcode scanning for book logging, and family account management.
• Do I need a library card to participate? No, anyone can join to participate and win goal prizes. However, to qualify for a drawing prize, you must have a valid library card in good standing on your Beanstack account.
• What counts as reading? Books, audiobooks, magazines, comics, blogs, and other online content all qualify. Caregivers reading aloud to children can count the time for both them and their child.
• What if I don’t want to use the app? Paper logs and verbal confirmations are welcome alternatives.
The Metropolitan Library System’s Summer Reading program remains a staple of community learning and engagement, ensuring that readers of all ages can enjoy books, build skills, and stay connected throughout the summer months.
