February offers several meaningful opportunities to celebrate stories and voices that matter, with experiences on and off the page. This month, we are excited to host the close-up photography exhibit, Small Wonders: Insects in Focus, with detailed images of bug life on display at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library. Projects like this reflect how libraries spark curiosity about art, science and the natural world in creative and unexpected ways.
In honor of Black History Month, our branches are hosting programs that highlight Black history, culture and creativity, from author talks and community discussions to family-friendly events inspired by Ralph Ellison’s legacy. These programs affirm our commitment to access, representation and creating spaces where history is honored and explored together.
This month also continues one of our most beloved traditions: the Winter Reading Challenge. Through Feb. 28, readers of all kinds can take part by exploring books, magazines or audiobooks, whether curled up at home, flipping pages at a library table or listening with one our digital resources like the Libby app. Every book you read brings us closer to our mission to inspire a love of reading and lifelong learning for everyone in our community.
And as you work toward your Winter Reading goals, we’re also supporting strong reading habits for our youngest learners through programs like 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. These programs, alongside storytimes, play-based learning and resources for parents and caregivers provide early learning that shapes a lifetime.
Later this month, we welcome back another community favorite: the annual Friends of the Metropolitan Library System Book Sale. This event not only brings book lovers together but directly supports literacy programs and library services throughout Oklahoma County, reminding us how powerful community engagement can be.
From Winter Reading to early learning, cultural celebrations, exhibits and everyday discovery, the library is here to support curiosity, creativity and connection, this month and all year long. Across our libraries, we work to connect people of all ages to access to books, technology, digital resources and educational tools, while creating welcoming spaces to learn, grow and create. From storytimes to career and language resources, book clubs and digital learning platforms, our libraries are here to support every stage of learning. Thank you for being part of a community that values knowledge, learning and community.

The highly anticipated Annual Friends of the Library Book Sale returns Feb. 21–22 at the Oklahoma Expo Hall at the OKC State Fairgrounds. This beloved event draws thousands of book lovers each year, offering more than 500,000 books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records and magazines at unbeatable prices. Paperbacks start at just $1, hardbacks at $2, and children’s books are $.50 for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks.
“The Friends book sale has become a tradition for so many Oklahoma City families,” said Heather Zeoli, Director of Development and Volunteer Services for the Metropolitan Library System. “People come for the incredible prices, but they stay because it feels good to be part of something that directly supports literacy and library services in our community.”
For those seeking unique finds, the “Better Books” section features rare and collectible items priced individually. The sale’s impressive collection is made possible through public donations and retired library materials. Behind the scenes, nearly 1,000 dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to sort, organize and staff the event.
A long-standing Oklahoma City tradition, the book
sale offers something for everyone, whether you’re a casual reader, a book collector or simply looking for an affordable way to stock your shelves.
"Overall, it is the general public that benefits from this book sale, because the proceeds go to build stronger libraries, and, with stronger libraries, you also get a more educated public," Book Sale volunteer Betty L. said.
Proceeds from the sale support critical library programs, including Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children under five and fosters early literacy across Oklahoma County.
Book Sale volunteer, Friends of the Library board member, and self-described “bookworm” Kristy S. spoke with Metro Library during her first year volunteering at the Book Sale in 2024.
“The reason I am so excited about being a board member is because we are raising funds for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and what better cause is there than putting books in the hands of little kids?” Kristy S. said.
Kate Millar has seen the program’s impact firsthand through her daughter, Evie. Since enrolling in DPIL, Millar says the program has sparked both a love of books and
admiration for its founder.
“Dolly Parton is an exceptional role model whom I want my daughter to emulate… Seeing her excitement when a package arrives with Dolly’s name on it warms my heart. That’s precisely the essence of the program—to instill a love for reading.”
Event Hours:
Public Sale:
Friday, Feb. 21, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 22, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Sensory-Friendly Hours*:
Feb. 21 and 22, 10 a.m.–noon
*No loud announcements; attendance capped at 500 people per session. Priority is given to guests using mobility aids and those preferring a calm shopping experience.
To help reduce congestion and improve safety, shoppers are encouraged to use smaller wheeled items or tote bags when possible. For this year, carts or wagons no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet are preferred, and wagons used to transport children are permitted.
Beginning with the February 2027 sale, oversized or unattended carts, utility carts, shopping carts, garbage cans, and similar large, wheeled items will not be allowed on the sale floor. Large carts and wagons not carrying people or children must be returned to vehicles or checked in the lobby as space allows. Small, wheeled suitcases, collapsible crates on wheels, and tall portable shopping baskets are

welcome. Very large wagons intended for multiple children, but used only for books, should not be brought onto the sale floor.
“The cart guidelines are really about creating a safer, smoother experience for shoppers and volunteers alike,” Zeoli said. “This year we’re asking for cooperation and starting next year, we’ll formalize those changes to keep the sale enjoyable for everyone.”
Shopping the book sale a day early is just one benefit of being an official Friend of the Metropolitan Library System at supportmls.org.
There are also still opportunities to volunteer at the sale or help prepare for next year by sorting books.
Volunteer James S. has helped with the Book Sale several times and spoke to this experience being surrounded by “like-minded people” and booklovers.
“This Book Sale is the biggest one I know of in the area, and people from all over come here,” James S. said, “It’s nice to be around people who love books.”
Volunteers, educators and nonprofits registered in advance are invited to select leftover materials from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Don’t miss this opportunity to find great deals, support your library, and celebrate a shared love of books.

African American Experiences
Feb. 7 at 11 a.m.
Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library

Retired Metropolitan Library System librarian Phillip Tolbert returns to the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library to present an overview of African American contributions to U.S. history across fields including medicine, science, literature, music, sports and more. He said that he hopes attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the breadth and impact of those contributions, “I’m hoping that guests will get a sense of the purpose and importance of African American history and also see the countless contributions African Americans have made to the history and development of this country,” Tolbert said in an interview with Metro Library.
While preparing the presentation, Tolbert said he continued learning, discovering individuals whose stories are often overlooked.
“I’ve already discovered some new people that I didn’t even know had done things,” he said. “There are significant figures in the medical field who have accomplished things that are just unbelievable. There are also people in the entertainment world who did incredible things that I never knew about.”
Tolbert encourages attendees to continue exploring African American history beyond the event, leaving the door open for further research, learning and awareness.
Celebrating Ralph Ellison: “More Than Invisible”
• Feb. 21 at Ralph Ellison Library
• Feb. 27 at Edmond Library
• Feb. 28 at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library.
The Metropolitan Library System invites readers of all ages to celebrate the life and legacy of Ralph Ellison, one of Oklahoma City’s most influential literary figures. Join us for a series of familyfriendly programs inspired by the children’s book “Ralph Ellison: More Than Invisible” by acclaimed author Quraysh Ali Lansana. Following a launch at the Ralph Ellison Library, the celebration continues with programs designed to introduce children and families to Ellison’s story and enduring impact.
Lansana is an award-winning author of more than 20 books spanning poetry, nonfiction and children’s literature. An Oklahoma native, Lansana is an associate professor at the

University of Tulsa, where he directs the African American Studies program and focuses on history, culture and storytelling.
“I believe libraries are one of the few remaining manifestations of public access to knowledge," Lansana said, looking forward to his presentations. "I will always be an advocate for libraries.”
His biography introduces young readers to Ralph Ellison, best known for “Invisible Man,” a novel translated into 17 languages that continues to shape conversations about race and identity. Born in Oklahoma City in 1914, Ellison began as a musician before finding his voice as a writer, earning international honors including the National Book Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Through photographs and personal anecdotes, Lansana traces Ellison’s journey from his Oklahoma City childhood to his global influence, inviting families to connect with a literary legend and encouraging young readers to see themselves in history.
“I want kids to understand that one of the world’s most influential writers grew up on streets not far from their own,” Lansana said.
Guests have another chance to learn more about Ralph Ellison with the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Feb. 13 at Warr Acres Library.
Before Greensboro: Why the 1958 Katz Sit-In Matters Nationally - Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library
Historian and author Dr. Karlos Hill will present a powerful discussion that places Oklahoma City at the center of the modern sit-in movement.
A Regents’ Professor of African and African American Studies at the University of Oklahoma, Hill is the author of three books, including “Beyond the Rope,” and “The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre: A Photographic History.” He describes his work as “bearing witness” to the Black past and will sign books following the presentation, with copies available through Second Story Books.
Drawing on the words and reflections of the 13 original Katz sit-in participants, Hill’s presentation serves as both a historical exploration and a tribute to the young people whose courage helped shape the civil rights movement.
“The history of this community changed the world in some very particular ways,” Hill said. “And we should not only remember it, but we should be inspired and activated by it.”

Hill’s talk focuses on the three-day Katz Drug Store sit-in and its role in sparking later protests, placing Oklahoma City within a national civil rights story. He also traces a lesser-known origin that includes the student play “Brother President,” about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which helped inspire the Katz sit-in.
The presentation will take place at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, just down the block from the newly completed Clara Luper Plaza. With this presentation, Hill hopes attendees leave with a deeper understanding of the Katz sit-in, why it mattered, and how the actions of 13 young people led to the desegregation of 38 stores.
“People don’t just change the world,” he said. “They change the world out of a deep sense of connection and compassion for how the past shows up today in our lives, in the lives of our community.”
Oklahoma Black Communities Symposium Feb. 28, Noon to 5 p.m.
Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library
The Oklahoma Black Communities Symposium brings together individuals, organizations and institutions from across Oklahoma who are working to research, document and preserve Black communities. The event will feature presentations focused on Sandtown, Walnut Grove, Gower Cemetery, Red Bird, and other Black towns, enclaves, and organizations offering attendees opportunities to learn and connect with others engaged in preservation and scholarship.
The keynote address, “From Tulsa to Beyond: African American Genealogy in Oklahoma,” will be presented by professional genealogist Nicka Sewell-Smith.
“We'll be talking about everything from Dawes cards to more federal records, things such as school and college records, and even people working in the community right now to preserve the history of Black folks in the Sooner State,” Nicka Sewell-Smith said.
Her presentation explores Oklahoma-specific resources for uncovering family histories, including tribal records from the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee and Seminole nations, along with other historical archives.

If you are interested in true crime or Hollywood history, then you know of the Black Dahlia case. In 1947 in Los Angeles, the body of Elizabeth Short was discovered. Despite a lengthy police investigation, the case remains unsolved with many books, articles and films speculating on the killer. I am familiar with the Black Dahlia case and have read some of the other books. I was not aware of this other case: Leila Welsh, was killed in her bedroom in Kansas City, Missouri in 1941. The author believes there is a link between the crimes. I am skeptical of books that claim to “solve” a long-ago murder, especially when evidence is lacking. In both cities, there was police corruption, incompetence, and less advanced forms of evidence collection. I am not saying Eli Frankel has solved the case in this book since there are many authors and bloggers who say they’ve solved the case with a different suspect. However, in this book the author names a man who lived in both places and knew both victims. If you’re interested in this famous story of Los Angeles history or true crime in general, this book, which has many interesting photographs (not gory), is one to explore.

This tale is about an African-American queen and king who carved out a kingdom in the Appalachian Mountains, right where North and South Carolina touch. Back in the late 1800s, the Kingdom of the Happy Land was a bustling place, and a piece of it still stands today. Nikki, a D.C real estate agent, learns the gripping tale from her grandma, Mother Rita, whose plea for help draws Nikki back home.
Intertwined in this novel are stories of survival, prosperity and ingenuity, but the strongest story is that of family legacy. The story is told in alternating voices between Luella, the queen of the kingdom, and Nikki, whose grandmother still lives on kingdom land…for now. The stories of these two strong women are woven together so tightly that the reader is simultaneously part of the kingdom and part of Nikki’s efforts to keep Mother Rita in her home.
This is historical fiction at its finest. You will not be able to put it down.

Blue is symbolic and emotional. Beloved both as a favorite color and an artistic substance, its story also aligns closely with tales of empire, exploration, and exploitation. “Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People,” approaches Black history through a specific, azure-tinted lens. This work of nonfiction is as filled with poetry as it is with well-researched primary sources and fascinating vignettes. Lively characters paint Perry’s pages, like Billy Blue, a farm-owning chocolate salesman and Thomas Commeraw, a potter working in deep blues.
“Black in Blues” does not only present a visual story of color. Perry also creates a rich soundscape by elaborating the importance of the blues, a musical genre that is undeniably Black at its core. "Black in Blues” is a truly special piece of nonfiction that dares to cross sensory lines, illuminate imperialism’s indignities and dive into the abstract— all while remaining grounded in Perry’s commitment to celebrate Black people.

Discover the mesmerizing world of insects at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library with "Small Wonders: Insects in Focus." The stunning display will be showcased in the library's first floor atrium from Jan. 28 through March 16. The exhibition brings the hidden beauty of insects into striking clarity through the work of Tulsa artist Bob Sober.
The traveling exhibition, organized by ExhibitsUSA, features large-scale macro photographs that present insects as works of art, highlighting their beauty and importance in our ecosystem.
Insects have existed for more than 350 million years and inhabit nearly every corner of daily life, quietly sustaining ecosystems. Scientists have documented hundreds of thousands of species, and some estimate as many as 30 million may exist worldwide, with thousands living right in our own backyards. What “Small Wonders” offers is a new way of seeing these familiar creatures.
Using advanced photographic techniques, Sober creates human-scale images assembled from hundreds of photos, revealing extraordinary detail and color. The result blends scientific precision with artistic beauty, showcasing vivid hues, iridescent textures, and intricate structures that redefine how we see insects.
On display at Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, the exhibition invites visitors to slow down and look more closely, not only at the photographs, but at the living world beyond the doors.
“Libraries have always been about more than books,” said Special Collections Librarian Judie Matthews, who has been instrumental in this project. “They’re places where people can build art literacy, explore science and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. This exhibition is a strong example of how libraries can connect in meaningful ways.”
To complement the exhibition, library staff have curated a series of hands-on programs and several take-home kits that invite visitors to explore the fascinating world of insects up close.
“The programs tied to this exhibit really highlight the creativity of our staff,” Matthews said. “They’ve found ways to turn the ideas behind the exhibition into interactive experiences for all ages.”

As adults across Oklahoma County wrap up Winter Reading goals, the Metropolitan Library System encourages families to focus on their youngest readers. Children’s literacy begins long before school, and one of the simplest ways to build skills is by reading together daily.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a pivotal early-literacy initiative for children from birth to age five. This free, year-round program fosters strong reading habits at home, in the library, and beyond.
Research shows children develop reading readiness years before school. Talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing together lays the foundation for language and future academic success.
Participation varies by age: families starting at birth read about one book per day, while older starters may read several a day. Caregivers register and log reading through the online reading tracker Beanstack, earning digital badges, stickers, and prizes. Milestones are celebrated every 50–100 books, with major rewards at 500 (a reading buddy plush and certificate) and 1,000 books (a themed tote bag, book and completion certificate). Prizes and stickers can be picked up at any Metro Library, and families without internet access can track reading on paper with library staff assistance.
Beyond this program, the Metropolitan Library System is also a proud affiliate partner of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a book gifting program that provides a free book
each month for a child from the time they’re born until their fifth birthday. Metro Library locations offer a wide range of programs and spaces for young children and their caregivers with storytimes, music programs, “toddlerobics,” art activities and playgroups designed to build literacy skills.
The library also supports early learning by connecting parents and caregivers with trusted resources like the Center for Early Literacy Learning, while local programs such as Early Birds Oklahoma, Infant Crisis Services and Sooner Start provide additional support. Families can also access parenting resources, including the Child Development Institute, Oklahoma Autism Center, Parent Promise, HealthyChildren. org and the CDC. Plus, with a library card, they can explore the International Children’s Digital Library for thousands of books in over 50 languages, as well as PBS Reading and Learning and Storyblocks for videos, activities and booklists at home.
Parents and caregivers interested in learning more can visit metrolibrary.org/ explore/audience/parents-caregivers, stop by their nearest Metro Library location, or scan the QR code for more information!
