Having been born and raised in Vancouver, I feel qualified to pass on what I remember from my youth about our great city. Read about local heritage and the people who were and are a part of this amazing legacy.

Take this guide with you and travel the hoods. Get out and explore the neighbourhoods of Metro Vancouver. You will not be disappointed.

The City of the Arts

Port Moody is divided into three distinct shopping and business districts. One area is called ‘Old Town Centre’ and is located along historic St. Johns Street and features a number of businesses that are housed in older or historical buildings. In this district, you can find a number of eateries, neighbourhood pubs and tourist

services. One favourite is the Golden Spike Pub located on St. Johns Street. Port Moody is referred to as ‘The City of the Arts.’ You can find a number of artist-related activities towards the westside of St. Johns Street. A good time to visit is during the annual Port Moody Festival of the Arts that takes place during the first two weeks of April. Also visit Rocky Point Park (see map).

He and his partners were presented with the opportunity to open their new location in 2011 and have not looked back!

THE PORT MOODY ARTS CENTRE

The Blackberry Gallery is a free public art gallery, operated by Port Moody Arts Centre Society and located in Port Moody’s original City Hall built in 1913. The Society, registered as a non-profit organization, is funded through the help of the City of Port Moody, the Gaming Commission and by donations received from individuals and corporations.

Located on the main floor of the Port Moody Arts Centre, the Blackberry Gallery consists of four exhibition spaces: the Main Gallery, the 3D Gallery, the Plum Gallery - Walls, and the Display Case. The Gallery hosts 44 exhibitions per year, ranging from works by international and regional to local artists.

This beautiful heritage building was built in 1913 as the original City Hall of Port Moody. This also marked the incorporation of Port Moody as a city. The City Hall served also as a police station, jail and fire hall.

The tall western tower housing the elevator was used to dry the fire hoses and the prisoners were kept in cells in the basement where the pottery kilns are now. Perhaps it is one of these long ago prisoners that we hear walking up and down the main staircase at late night pottery firings! Another topic of speculation and debate - is there or is there not a secret tunnel under St. John’s Street to Jake’s Pub?

The Arts Centre is home to galleries, a gift shop, arts classes of all kinds, volunteers and many different community arts groups. As of September 1, 1999 it is run by the non-profit Port Moody Arts Centre Society.

Outdoor Recreation

Port Moody’s gentle tides make kayaking a pleasure and its crescent shape shoreline is always busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists. The forested mountainside is home to Belcarra Provincial Park with its lovely lake and network of hiking trails, as well as Buntzen Lake Recreation Area, popular for its boating, fishing and many hiking trails. Several trails are suitable for mountain bikes.

Wildlife Viewing

While the sheltered harbour still has some industry, freighters come and go at a seemingly relaxed pace thus making the waters save havens to sea lions lolling around on log booms, wading blue herons, eagles and geese.

Heritage Tour of Port Moody

The Coast Salish nation were the first inhabitants in the area that became Port Moody, likely attracted by the sheltered waterfront and forested hillsides. The Fraser River gold rush of 1858 led Col. R.C. Moody and the Royal Engineers to build a trail from the then capital of New Westminster north to Port Moody as a defense position in the event of an attack by US soldiers. The attack never happened but North Road is still a vital link between the two cities. Twenty years later, Port Moody was chosen as the western terminus for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The port enjoyed this notoriety for two years, until a new terminus was found at Granville, now Vancouver.

This tour will let you explore the beginnings of the railway and indulge in the rich heritage, which abounds in Port Moody. Begin your tour at the Port Moody Station Museum. Built in 1905, it was the second railway station in the area.

THE EVERGREEN LINE

The Evergreen Line is a 10.9 kilometre (6.8 mi) long SkyTrain rapid transit line which just opened for the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority (TransLink) in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It extends the SkyTrain network from Lougheed Town Centre in Burnaby to Lafarge Lake–Douglas in Coquitlam, with the addition of six new SkyTrain stations and major upgrades to two existing stations (Commercial–Broadway Station and Lougheed Town Centre).

When this extension is open, the Millennium Line will be shortened to operate from Waterfront to Lougheed Town Centre, and the Evergreen Line will operate between VCC–Clark and Lafarge Lake–Douglas. Service is planned to begin by middle of 2016 and is expected to serve 70,000 passengers per day in 2021. Plans for the line call for the use of tunnels and elevated guideways, using the same automated technology as the existing SkyTrain rapid transit lines operated by TransLink elsewhere in Metro Vancouver. On January 25, 2012, the provincial government announced that pre-construction work would proceed on the line, including the removal of some buildings and the construction of underground utility tunnels.

44

Burquitlam

The Evergreen Line runs north from Lougheed Town Centre Station on an elevated guideway along the centre of North Road. Burquitlam Station will be on the east side of Clarke Road near Burquitlam Plaza. Leaving Burquitlam Station, the line will cross to the west side of Clarke Road, before entering a tunnel towards Port Moody.

Port Moody

The Evergreen Line emerges from a tunnel just east of Barnet Highway. It travels at ground level along the south side of the Canadian Pacific Rail (CPR) tracks to Moody Centre Station (with a connection to the West Coast Express), located at the Port Moody transit exchange site. Continuing east, the line crosses the CPR tracks just before Inlet Centre Station, located north of Barnet Highway.

Coquitlam

The line continues along the north side of the CPR tracks towards Coquitlam Central Station, located at the Coquitlam transit exchange site. Turning north, the line runs on an elevated guideway along the west side of Pinetree Way to Lincoln Station. It then crosses to the east side near Northern Avenue, before ending at Lafarge Lake–Douglas Station, north of Guildford Way.

CoquitlamMeans“Salmon”

The City of Port Coquitlam was incorporated as a municipality in 1913 and City Hall constructed in 1914. Since that time the City has seen significant growth with a population now exceeding 57,000. Port Coquitlam is bounded on the south by

the Fraser River, on the east by the Pitt River, west by the Coquitlam River and by the Coast Mountains to the north. Before the arrival of the early white settlers around the 1860’s, the area now known as Port Coquitlam was a First Nations village at the mouth of the Coquitlam River. Coquitlam is an aboriginal word meaning “salmon,” and the Coquitlam River was famous for its hordes of the Pacific Coast fish.

West Coast Express

West Coast Express is the interregional commuter railway in British Columbia, Canada. Opened in 1995, it links Mission, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, and Port Moody with Waterfront Station in Downtown Vancouver, where it interchanges with SkyTrain rapid transit, SeaBus and other public transportation services.

The West Coast Express operates from Monday to Friday only excluding holidays, with five trains per day running from Mission to Vancouver in the morning peak hours and returning to Mission in the evening peak. A one-way trip the length of the line takes 75 minutes, which is faster and more reliable than driving to downtown Vancouver. In addition, there are two buses (called the “TrainBus”) operates from Mission to Vancouver in the morning (after all trains) and three in the evening returning to Mission in the evening (again, after all trains), stopping at all West Coast Express stations. Beginning in 2016, Coquitlam will be served by the Evergreen Line, a 10.9 km (6.8 mile) long extension of TransLink’s SkyTrain system, using Bombardier’s Advanced Rapid Transit technology, at a cost of $1.4 billion. The Evergreen Line will run from the Coquitlam Town Centre area, through Coquitlam Central Station and into Port Moody, re-entering Coquitlam on North Road and finally joining the existing SkyTrain system at Lougheed Town Centre. The Evergreen Line is expected to replace the 97 B-Line. www.westcoastexpress.com, www.evergreenline.gov.bc.ca/

Museum

The Museum is located in the old General Store building on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows. The main part of the building dates back to 1885 and was moved from its original location near Herring Road to its present site in 1908.

The building housed Pitt Meadows’ first post office (in use to 1944) and one of its earliest stores (in use until 1931). After 1931 the building was used primarily as a residence and received municipal heritage status in 1989.

By the mid 1990s the building was vacant and had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was purchased in 1997 by the City of Pitt Meadows, and, after eight months of restoration, the Pitt Meadows Heritage & Museum Society became its new ten-

new tenant.

Artifacts relating to the pioneer and agricultural history of the community are located on the first floor of the Museum with offices, work and storage areas, and a small community archives located on the upper floor. www.pittmeadows.bc.ca (604) 465-4326

Memorial Peace Park Bandstand

The Maple Ridge Concert Band presented the Bandstand as a gift to the people of Maple Ridge on May 7, 1994.

George Price offered his considerable talents for fund-raising and on-site construction began in March, 1994 taking a remarkably short 8-1/2 weeks to complete. This included ordering the decorative columns from Oregon, letting the contracts for the structural steel work, renting a large warehouse for the assembly of the acoustically-engineered ceiling (the acoustic design was completed by the same firm that designed the acoustics for the Orpheum Theatre), painting the decorative railings and ironwork, painting the ceiling panels, and countless meetings with the general contractor.

In the end, the final costs of the project (including donated materials) amounted to $192,000. This did not include more than 1,300 hours of volunteer time (176 person-days) and the value of the land donated by the Municipality. The Provincial Government donated a grant in the amount of $50,650.

Today the Bandstand is used for movie shoots, weddings, musical performances as well as many other special events.

The Bandstand was designed by architect/engineer Tom Walker, a resident of Maple Ridge and long time musician/trombone player.

The history of the River’s Reach Pub only began in 2000, although one look inside and you’ll be transported to the early 1900’s. The Pub has successfully brought back a sense of the ‘Old West Coast’ in ‘New West’. River rock and unique hardwoods have found a hillside home in a community that dates back over a hundred years. Simply put, the River’s Reach Pub is where ‘Tradition Meets Excellence’. On Dec.14, 2000 this ‘multi award winning’ pub officially opened for business and gave everyone a modern day account of New Westminster history. The architecture, craftsmanship and woodwork are unmatched, but it’s the attention to detail that is second to none. From the fireplaces, picture walls and 19th century antiques this pub has to be

seen to be appreciated. Come in and make yourself at home- life is just a bit simpler here, and perhaps you too can reach for a piece of a day gone by!

New Westminster Secondary School

New West Jazz Clinic with Hal Sherman

Bob Schaefer taught band at New Westminster Secondary School from 1968 through 1996. “When the senior students heard I was from the US they said, “We want a stage band.” Stage bands were big in the US at that time. I started the first stage band in New Westminster. It was extracurricular.

I thought it would be great to have other stage bands from around Vancouver all come together. So in the spring of 69, eight schools came to our first New Westminster Jazz Festival (aka Hyack Jazz Festival) with eight bands participating. Bobby Herriott and Dave Robbins were the adjudicators. The following year we had nine bands. At its peak in the late eighties/early nineties, 75 bands were spread out over two days in two performance locations. It ran for 24 years. It was the only festival run by high school students that I am aware. The ones in the US were all run by colleges or universities. It also featured many local and international jazz artists and groups as guest performers. Don Menza from the old Tonight Show band comes to mind along with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band and many others whose names elude me. Our students ran the festival with the exception of the adjudicators and me.”

95 Musical Moments

“I liked to take the jazz band into festivals in the US. The performance levels of the U.S. groups was usually better and it gave my students something to aspire to.

The jazz band’s most notable accomplishments were: a first place finish in our category at the huge Reno Jazz Festival (the first non U.S. band to do so) in 1976 and a “Sweepstakes Band” award at the Clackamas College Jazz Festival in Oregon in 1980. There were a couple of second places along the way as well in festivals at Bellevue Wash. and Vancouver Wash.

We had a policy in New Westminster of inclusion. Every student got to go on a band trip every year. We never made big trips overseas but took more affordable trips such as to California and Utah. Doug Pryce had gone down and hooked up with schools both in Pleasant Hill near San Francisco and to Salt Lake City. We would take our seniors 11 and 12 down to one, one year and to the other the following year. That way no student went to the same place twice but as directors we were familiar with both areas.

I recall hearing a really good jazz band at the Reno Jazz Festival in the early days. I approached them and asked the director if he would come to our jazz festival. His name was Hal Sherman and his band was the Kent Meridian Jazz Band. They are legendary now and Hal was hugely influential in the development of the high school and college jazz band movement locally.”

Long BeenACommunity On Its Own

12th Street has long been a community of its own: one that grew along this early road connection kept busy by the major crossroads of 6th and 8th Avenue. A streetcar line once ran up and down the 12th Street hill, providing easy transporta-

portation into New Westminster, drawing visitors to the Metro Theatre that once served as the focal point of the community. Today, ‘eclectic’ is the word to describe New Westminster’s 12th Street neighbourhood. With widened sidewalks and quaint, eco-friendly street lamps this is a walkable community sprinkled with ethnic eateries, groceries, second-hand shops and a must-see technology company. On Sunday August 5th 2012 11am - 4 pm be sure to see the:

A Visit To Queensborough Landing

Queensborough has a colourful past unlike other neighbourhoods in the Royal City. Here people from many different cultures lived and worked together seeking employment at local sawmills, canneries, shipyards and farms. To this day Queensborough, which is set apart from the main city by the North Arm of the

Fraser River, continues to have a wonderful multicultural flavour.

Today Queensborough Landing is the centre of New Westminster’s island suburb. Filled with restaurants, outlet stores and a newly opened 5-star casino, Queensborough is a shopaholic’s dream. When visiting the Landing, drop in at Roots, Moores, Guess, Aldo, Tommy Hilfiger, Le Chateau and Armani Exchange for fashion, Bulk Barn, and Lindt Chocolates and Walmart for your home needs. Fuel up with a late lunch or dinner at the newly opened Boston Pizza: try their Stromboli sandwiches, they are amazing. Other local restaurants include Tora Sushi, Taco Del Mar, Starbucks, Tim Horton’s and Opa! Greek restaurant. Take a break from the afternoon of shopping and take a walk along the Fraser River. Enjoy one of BC’s last ‘working rivers’ by watching tugboats zip up and down this busy bit of the mighty Fraser.

What you wouldn’t expect in this community are quaint neighbourhoods tucked along the riverside. But that’s what you find if you take a trip off the beaten path.

Expect a peaceful New Westminster riverfront row home at Marmalade Sky pre-construction property in a community life amid the hustle and bustle of the lower mainland.

‘Nicknamed Sappers’

The name of this neighbourhood began with the Royal Engineers (nicknamed Sappers) who camped nearby while helping build the community you see today. Today, New Westminster’s Sapperton neighbourhood has become a shopping hot spot for gifts, interiors and kids’ essentials. It has the feel of Vancouver’s Main Street district – a mix of local designers, modern home essentials complete with an organic market, fabulous bakery, gelato shop and variety of eateries. Papa Leo’s Pizza and Gino’s (431 East Columbia) are not to be missed.

The Brewery District

THE BREWERY DISTRICT

PHOTO: Courtesy of www.hankstruckpictures.ca

In 1879 the Sapperton Brewery - BC’s oldest brewery - was established in the Sapperton neighbourhood of New Westminster, BC. Over the course of the Brewery’s lifetime, the business changed owners several times, from Coast Breweries to Lucky Lager and finally to Labatt’s Brewing Company in 1958. Labatt’s continued producing its products and other contract beers until 2005, after the decision was made to close the New Westminster plant in 2004.

Conceived to fulfill long-standing community needs, The Brewery District will be a catalyst for social and economic rejuvenation – drawing retailers, businesses, and residents back to the neighbourhood. It will also showcase the most progressive ideas in modern placemaking, combining leading-edge urban design with a deep understanding of human needs to create vital, timeless spaces.

The Labatt Brewery had been listed in the New Westminster Heritage Resource Inventory. With the decommissioning of the Brewery, the City of New Westminster Community Heritage Commission idenitified artifacts from the site that have historical significance. The Brewery District will honour that history and legacy, weaving elements from its past into one collective “community memory” for its future.

Sapperton Landing Park

This park, located at the foot of Cumberland Street, is a pretty place to walk along the Fraser River and to wave at the frequent trains that go by. It also has a bit of dark history - the fishing pier and old house near the entrance were formerly where prisoners were brought in via the river to the old BC Pen across Columbia Street.

But even if you know that, it’s still a peaceful park to visit. Even on a sunny day, very few venture across the railway tracks to visit, so every time I come here, I’ve got the place practically to myself. The path is nicely landscaped and has a number of wooden bridges that make good stopping points to enjoy the view of the Fraser River in all it’s working glory - tugboats, seabirds, log booms - with the mighty Golden Ears and Mt. Baker in the distance.

The only real problem is that, as of yet, the path abruptly ends at Front Street. Narrow and travelled heavily by freight trucks, it’s not safe to walk further along the road. So, you must either turn back along the path, or walk along the paved trail that runs alongside the railroad tracks back to the beginning. This can be fun if there’s a train going through, especially one of the Rocky Mountaineer trains, full of people who like to wave hello to me and my cute dog.

reasons. It wasn’t long before he moved to Kalamata and then to Athens where he eventually joined the army. Because he was a barber he was in great demand in the army and got to know Generals and others in high command. After the army everyone was leaving Greece, so his father said, “If you want to go, I do not mind,” and he too emigrated, to Montreal.

In Montreal he married a girl from back home, Voula. He learned how to do the latest in styles and razor cuts from the guys in Montreal, Perry Como Style, Hollywood Style and in 1960 they moved to Vancouver.

His first job in Vancouver was at the Hotel Vancouver Barber Shop for three days. Next, he moved to a small shop at 41st & Oak. “I’ve got the best barber in town,” bragged the owner. It wasn’t long before Gus Lloyd spotted him and hired him for his Waverly Barber Shop on Georgia Street. Jack Wasserman wrote about him, “There is a new guy in town who does styles for men. Men’s hairdos.” Lots of business types came into the Waverly and the lifestyle was contagious. Seeing himself as an entrepreneur, he went into partnership with Gus, they bought a building on Richards Street and opened the Bouzouki Greek Coffee Shop.

He opened his own hair salon, the Riviera on Seymour, in 1964. (see p 113)

It Ain’t Over Until Faye Leung the Hat Lady Sings

The Faye and Dean Leung Story!

How they changed the faces of Canada

Dean and Faye Leung were pioneers in blending the Chinese society with the Caucasian society in Vancouver during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. They both fought the decades old discrimination in Canada against the Chinese and other minorities.

Together, they accomplished many things in the fields of banking, housing, education and probably most importantly in the field of immigtration category reform. If you are from an immigrant family who came to Canada after 1967, chances are you are here because of Faye Leung. It can probably be said that Canada is multicultural today because of the efforts of Faye Leung.

Faye was also a pioneer in establishing economic ties between Canada and China starting back in 1980, through to today, when China began to open its doors after

the Cutlural Revolution. She was the first Canadian businesswoman to be invited to China by Deng Xiaoping’s government.

The last chapter in her biography is an overview of the Fantasy Gardens boondoggle which saw the first premier in Commonwealth history forced to resign due to his own corruption. Faye is beaten up and smeared by the premier’s lawyers, then the media and made the scapegoat to keep the premier out of jail. A more in-depth look at this entire affair can be read in this book.
