Fraud is a preventable crime, IF you know what to look for... Everyone is subject to scams, but because seniors are identified as easy marks, they are frequently targeted by the dishonest. Many times, scammers are strangers preying on older individuals who may be lonely, isolated, confused, desperate for cash or attention. It’s important for you to be on the lookout for scammers, not only to protect your assets but help you identify possible scams against yourself, family members, and friends.
What to look for:
FOCUS
l
Those who ask for your credit card, banking, Social Security numbers, and other personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call. l The IRS never calls you. You will always receive a letter— never a phone call. l Companies who offer “free prizes”, but you have to send money (taxes, shipping, etc.) to receive your prize. You will not receive the “prize”—they keep the money you have sent. l Offers you don’t understand. If you don’t understand, don’t respond. If in doubt, ask them to mail you the information. l Companies who want you to pay in advance for services, usually so they can buy materials. A reputable company will have the materials and not ask you to buy them first. Only pay AFTER the services are delivered. l Companies that offer you ways to make money from home. If you have to pay upfront to get started, they will take your money and disappear.

Scam & Fraud Prevention Helpful Hint: If you have not heard of the company, call the Better Business Bureau, National Fraud Information Center or state attorney general. Obtain the business name, street address, phone number, and business license number. If you have caller ID on your phone, make sure that number matches the number the salesperson is giving you. Check out the information on the internet. ALWAYS ask for information to be sent in the mail. If you receive nothing, they usually do not exist.
Family/Grandparent scam—someone claiming to be a relative who is calling from a distant place and is in trouble. You will be asked to send money to help them out. Have some security questions ready to verify it is actually your relative—what is their birthdate? Pet’s name? City where they were born? If they can’t answer, hang up.
l
Technology Scam—a person claiming to be from Microsoft saying they have seen a virus on your computer. They ask you to start your computer and give them access to your personal information or install tracking software you cannot see which gives them access to passwords, bank accounts, and more. Microsoft DOES NOT call you and cannot see any virus on your computer. Hang up.
l
Email/Court Scam—You receive an e-mail or phone call asking about jury duty saying you missed your appearance and ask for your Social Security number to confirm your information. Courts don’t do this—do not give out your number.
l
Lottery Scam—a letter or e-mail saying you have won a foreign lottery but you must pay to receive the money. If it is too good to be true, it usually is! Don’t pay to “WIN” anything.
l
Medicare/Health Insurance scams—perpetrators may pose as a Medicare representative to get older people to give them their personal information, or they will provide bogus services for elderly people at makeshift mobile clinics, then use the personal information they provide to bill Medicare and pocket the money.
l
Counterfeit prescription drugs—counterfeit drug scams operate on the Internet where seniors increasingly go to find better prices on specialized medications. This scam is growing in popularity and the danger is that besides paying money for something that will not help a person’s medical condition, products may be unsafe substances that can inflict even more harm.
l
You are invited!
Learn about community needs Please plan to attend one of our one-hour monthly tours where you will learn about our programs. At the same time, you will find out why 4,000 volunteers are vital to our aid efforts, and how you can become part of that team. Saturday, Sept. 10th—10:00 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15th—9:30 a.m.
Current Scams l
September/October 2016
Metrocrest Senior News
Funeral & cemetery scams—scammers read obituaries and call or attend the funeral service of a complete stranger to take advantage of the grieving widow or widower. Claiming the deceased had an outstanding debt with them, scammers will try to extort money from relatives to settle the fake debts. Disreputable funeral homes capitalize on family members’ unfamiliarity with the considerable cost of funeral services to add unnecessary charges to the bill. In one common scam of this type, funeral directors will insist that a casket, usually one of the most expensive parts of funeral services, is necessary even when performing a direct cremation, which can be accomplished with a cardboard casket rather than an expensive display or burial casket. Sue and Stella volunteer in the Metrocrest Services food pantry by assisting individuals who visit to select food. During the summer, an average of 225 families and seniors each week visited the pantry. For details on receiving help with food or donating nonperishables, call 972446-2100.
Nutrition Under $1 Nutrition for under $1 per serving—is it possible? Yes, you can keep your nutrition up and your food costs down. According to AARP, here are some of the best foods for stretching your food dollars, and, hopefully, not your medical costs. 3 Carrots (cleaned and bagged
3 Whole turkey breast—
are the best value) 3 Plain low-fat yogurt (buy the largest size) 3 Cottage cheese 3 Frozen peas 3 Canned salmon
3 Black beans 3 Russet potatoes 3 Brown rice 3 Canned tomatoes 3 Apples
skip the skin
Don’t forget, if you are having trouble filling your pantry you can visit the Metrocrest Services Food Pantry. For more information, call 972-446-2100.
