2016 PREVIEW For 145 years, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has been a place of learning, insight, contemplation, and delight, connecting our audiences with five millennia of art, architecture, and creative expression. In 1976, we launched Travel with the Met to extend our scope beyond the Museum to the farthest reaches of the globe.

Hundreds of enriching itineraries have taken Met Members and supporters all over the world in the company of our renowned curators and educators.

From Amsterdam to Isfahan, travelers are inspired by humanity’s highest artistic achievements. On these upcoming 2016 trips, tour Palladio’s villas alongside an erudite art historian, wander the ruins of Persepolis with a curator of ancient Near Eastern art, or hike the Camino de Santiago with a Spanish-born specialist in European painting.

This preview includes trips through the summer of 2016 as well as fall cruises. A full trip listing will be sent to you in the fall of 2015.

Art & Architecture of Cuba January 16 to 23, 2016 Discover Cuba’s rich culture and fascinating history. Explore the arts in Havana and visit Matanzas and Varadero on an overnight excursion to the north coast. Meet with artists and students; attend specially performances of music and dance.

India: East to West February 7 to 23, 2016 In the company of lecturer Chris Noey, explore renowned sites and discover lesser-visited marvels. Travel from Delhi to the extraordinary city of Varanasi. Shanghai & Hong Kong March 16 to 25, 2016 Discover centuries of Asian art on a journey with lecturer Dora Ching.

Dutch & Flemish Landscapes April 10 to 18, 2016 As tulips and daffodils unfurl in a riot of colors, cruise the waterways of Holland and Belgium aboard AmaPrima. With curator Freyda Spira, admire cutting-edge architecture in Rotterdam and explore Delft, the birthplace of Vermeer. View the famous altarpiece in Ghent and spend a day in lovely Bruges. Explore the recently renovated Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Titian to Tiepolo April 18 to 27, 2016

Hong Kong

With lecturer Olivier Bernier, admire Venetian art from the 15th to 18th centuries. Begin in Asolo, staying at the luxurious Villa Cipriani.

In La Serenissima, stay at the legendary Gritti Palace while exploring the city’s finest museums and churches. Dine at a private palazzo and admire the Basilica of San Marco after hours.

Fly to Chiclayo to tour UNESCO-recognized Chan Chan. Explore the ancient fortresses and sun temples of Cusco, and travel by train to Machu Picchu.

The Pre-Raphaelites and Arts & Crafts Movement May 4 to 15, 2016

Discover Vienna before a cruise with curator Jayson Dobney aboard Royal Crown. Admire stunning palaces in Bratislava and Budapest. In Kalocsa, Hungary, enjoy an equestrian demonstration. See Belgrade’s landmarks; sail through the Iron Gates; and call at Vidin, Bulgaria. Explore Veliko Tarnovo, former capital of Bulgaria, and hear the monks’ choir in nearby Arbanasi. MET ADVENTURES: El Camino de Santiago May 20 to June 1, 2016 With lecturer Inés Powell, hike the route of the pilgrims along the Way of St. James. From Pamplona to Santiago de Compostela, enjoy spectacular countryside, stay at elegant paradores, visit historic churches, enjoy wine tastings, and hear Gregorian chant by the famous monks of Silos. Arrive in Santiago de Compostela to witness the Botafumeiro ritual at the cathedral.

Curator of European Paintings, Maryan Ainsworth has accompanied Met travelers on cultural journeys from London to Lisbon and beyond.

Having led a program on the waterways of France, she is eager to visit the waterways of Russia and the collections of Moscow’s iconic museums.

As Curator in Charge in the Met’s Department of Ancient Near Eastern Art, Joan Aruz was the force behind the landmark exhibition, Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age (2015). She has led numerous Met programs to Turkey, the Middle East, and islands of the Eastern Mediterranean.

Art historian and author Olivier Bernier lectures frequently at the Met. His loyal following of travelers have joined him on journeys around the world, from the palazzi of Venice to the temples of Angkor Wat.

Curator of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts, Wolfram Koeppe is the lecturer on the Met’s 2016 Sicily cruise aboard Sea Cloud II. His passion for the Baroque will be nourished on a visit to the city of Noto, recognized for its achievements in the art and architecture of this period.

As the General Manager of Media Production, Emmy Award-winning producer Chris Noey specializes in video installations, which he has overseen for exhibitions including Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2011). An expert in Islamic art, he has led several Travel with the Met programs to India.

A native of Spain, Inés Powell has lectured at the Met for over 30 years, and her engaging talks have gained her a faithful following.

A few years ago, Inés walked the entire French route of the Camino de Santiago. She considers the experience to be one of the most enlightening in her life.

A curator in the Department of Drawings and Prints, Freyda Spira is an expert in the German Reformation and the art of Northern Europe. A lively lecturer with a wide variety of interests, Freyda also oversees the Museum’s holdings of ephemera, including the impressive baseball card collection.

Curator in Charge of the Met’s Department of Arms and Armor, Pierre Terjanian is a specialist in medieval and Renaissance armor.

His expertise and unique lectures will enrich our Baltic cruise and illuminate this fascinating area of European art.
