30 Years of Service, Support, and Solidarity in Times of Need

This summer, the Texas Hill Country faced tragedy and loss in the wake of the devastating July 4 floods. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues were impacted in ways big and small. Throughout the response and recovery efforts, it was an honor to witness your compassion and commitment to serving our communities. It is truly our extraordinary people who make Methodist Healthcare a place of hope and healing.

We care like family here. Within within a week of the first flooding, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, one of Methodist Healthcare’s 50/50 owners, committed three million in funding to organizations directly serving Kerr County and beyond. These are the moments that remind me what’s so special about Methodist Healthcare System.

In this issue, we reflect on a milestone moment—30 years of partnership between HCA Healthcare and Methodist Healthcare Ministries. This anniversary marks three decades of shared commitment to our mission:

“Serving Humanity to Honor God.” It’s a legacy of care we can all be proud of.

I know that your kindness, commitment, and bravery are not reserved for times of crisis. In this magazine, you will hear stories about the daily contributions of our people and our teams—leaders at the bedside, advocates for patients, and champions of compassion. You will find stories that highlight our staff members' “why”—the unique motivations that inspire them to serve with heart each day.

We have also included a new healthcare-focused spread for you to explore the many benefits available to HCA Healthcare to help you take full advantage of the resources available to support your personal and professional well-being.

Whether you’re reading from your break room or while visiting one of our facilities, I hope this magazine inspires pride in our system and gratitude for each other. Thank you for being part of the Methodist Healthcare family. Together, we are creating a healthier tomorrow.

With gratitude,

Top Volunteer Community Corner

WHERE DO YOU VOLUNTEER AND HOW OFTEN?

I have volunteered at the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo (HLSR) for the past 27 rodeo seasons. I logged 77 hours of volunteer work in the first three months of this year.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO VOLUNTEER?

I’ve been inspired to give back for the kids of Texas, our future leaders. They are the reason for the dedication – the ultimate recipients of scholarships.

The mission of the HLSR is to promote agriculture by hosting an annual event that educates and entertains the public, supports Texas youth, showcases Western heritage, and provides year-round educational support. More importantly to me is that I’ve been a part of the $28 million dollars given annually for youth education and scholarships. Hundreds of scholarships are given for college, graduate work, and the various trades.

Not only do I volunteer for 12 months of the year by leading a committee, but I am also a scholarship judge (by reading and scoring applicants from high school students), and a wine judge for the annual International Wine Competition (we average 3,000 wine entries from around the world).

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MEMORIES FROM VOLUNTEERING?

Some of my most memorable experiences come from inviting scholarship recipients to speak to my committee of 400 volunteers. As chairman, I organize two major fundraising events each February, which together generate over $4 million for scholarships. During our meetings, I often ask a recipient to share their story and describe how the scholarship has impacted their life. Many are the first in their families to attend college—or to graduate. Hearing their journeys firsthand is a powerful reminder of the difference our work makes.

HOW DOES VOLUNTEERING IMPACT YOU PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY?

Methodist Healthcare’s support empowers me to actively engage in meaningful volunteer work throughout the year. This encouragement enables me to manage a committee of 400 volunteers and meet monthly with rodeo officials to coordinate logistics, budgeting, and equipment usage. Over the past three decades, my passion for volunteering has grown significantly. This commitment has led me to support organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association (inspired by family), the mobile food bank (serving foodinsecure individuals in my community), and to establish my own charitable foundation for children in 2018—the Top Hand Scramble Foundation.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING TO VOLUNTEER?

I strive to inspire others to give back to projects that have a meaningful impact on their lives. It’s often easier than people think—and the social aspect adds real value to life. I’ve found it incredibly rewarding to spend time with like-minded individuals who share similar motivations.

Methodist Healthcare and HCA Healthcare support volunteerism by rewarding employees with Care Cards for every 10 hours of volunteering I log, which can be donated to a charity of choice. At the end of the day, nothing feels better than making a tangible difference in the lives of others in need.

My suggestion: ask your coworkers what they do to volunteer locally. Then, consider what causes resonate with your own family. My wife and I volunteer together, and it’s made a meaningful difference in our lives.

The Hope Fund

Turning Hardships into Triumphs

When unexpected hardship hits, it can throw even the most prepared person off course. For Shelbie, a dependable vehicle was essential to maintain her job and daily life. When her car suddenly stopped running — even after she'd invested in a new battery and alternator — the situation quickly became overwhelming. After exhausting her own tools and knowledge, she finally took the car to a shop, only to be hit with a $600 repair bill for a snapped ground wire. It was a cost she simply couldn't cover at the time.

Shelbie, like many of us, isn’t someone who asks for help easily. Applying to the Hope Fund was truly a last resort. She wrestled with the decision, especially knowing that others were facing issues from hurricanes at the time. But she also realized that her situation was real, and it mattered. “My car was my lifeline,” she said. “Without it, I couldn’t work. I couldn’t live my life.”

When the Hope Fund came through with support, Shelbie was grateful, not just because her car was fixed, but because she felt seen. “I didn’t think I’d receive any help,” she shared. “But I did. And that told me that my company truly cares. I was back on the road that weekend, and I had a new sense of gratitude for myself, as well as for Methodist Healthcare and HCA Healthcare.”

Now, Shelbie is paying it forward by donating to the Hope Fund through each paycheck, because she knows firsthand how powerful that support can be. “Even if you can only give a little, that little bit can make a big difference for someone going through a tough time," she said.

Shelbie’s story is a reminder that hardship looks different for everyone, and that help, when it’s given with compassion, can change everything. If you’re looking for a way to support your coworkers in their moments of need, consider donating to the Hope Fund. Together, we can be the helping hand that lifts someone back up.

Caring Like Family

Changedforever

Just days before Christmas while she was on her way to work, 20-year-old Emma Bond’s life changed forever. A wrong-way driver, under the influence of alcohol, collided head-on with her on I-37 in Elmendorf, Texas.

By what many call a miracle, a bystander driving nearby, risked his own life to pull Emma from the flames. That selfless act saved her life, but was only the beginning of Emma’s road to recovery.

Following the recovery, Emma was immediately rushed to a nearby San Antonio hospital to help save her life and treat multiple injuries. Emma’s mother, Shara Bond, shared that despite the pain and fear, Emma never lost her positive spirit.

Emma began her recovery at Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak Rehabilitation Center, where she entered inpatient rehabilitation. She was later transferred to Methodist Hospital | Atascosa near her hometown, where she began the slow but determined process of learning to walk again.

“God put me here for a reason,” said Emma. “I kept telling myself ‘You need to do whatever you can do because you’re here for a reason’. Doctors told me that they read my charts and couldn’t believe I was alive today.”

Emma’s story captured the hearts of many across San Antonio and beyond, serving as a powerful reminder of just how far the effects of impaired driving can be, not just for the individuals involved, but for their families, the community, and the healthcare teams that help put the pieces back together. With the support of her family, care teams, and the community, Emma has been fighting her way back, step by step, day by day.

Spurs Team Up

to Uplift Young Patients

The San Antonio Spurs continue to strengthen their partnership with Methodist Healthcare through heartfelt hospital visits that bring joy and encouragement to pediatric patients. Head Coach Mitch Johnson recently spent time at Methodist Children’s Hospital, joining children in music therapy and crafting calming jars designed to support emotional wellness. He also visited the pediatric oncology unit, offering smiles and support to patients unable to leave their rooms.

Earlier this summer, Spurs forward Sandro Mamukelashvili also visited the hospital, connecting with patients and staff through uplifting conversations and shared moments of kindness. These visits reflect a decade-long partnership between Methodist Healthcare and the San Antonio Spurs, teaming up to support healthier communities across South Texas.

Caring Like Family

Wild Encounters and Water Wisdom

Methodist Healthcare and San Antonio Zoo brought smiles and learning to families this summer through two exciting community events. At Methodist Children’s Hospital, patients and staff enjoyed a special visit from the zoo’s Animal Ambassador Team, featuring unforgettable encounters with furry and feathered friends that lifted spirits and sparked joy.

Later, at San Antonio Zoo, Methodist Healthcare hosted a hydration education station, drawing more than 800 visitors. Guests learned about the importance of staying hydrated—comparing human needs to a rhinoceros’s 20-gallon daily intake—and took home over 700 commemorative water bottles. The interactive display helped families visualize healthy hydration habits, especially during hot summer days.

MEAL OF THE MONTH

Superb Eats

Delicious eats and fun evenings are always in season. Whether you enjoy entertaining guests or are simply looking for a new dish to share with family, this steak recipe is a flavorful and satisfying option—especially when paired with a fresh salad.

This 5-ounce steak delivers 40 grams of protein, helping you feel full longer. Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, supporting recovery after injury, and keeping your cells, tissues, and organs functioning properly.

Red meat is also a great source of iron, a vital nutrient that helps produce hemoglobin and myoglobin—proteins that carry oxygen throughout the body. According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. Including more iron-rich foods in your meals is a simple way to support your health, especially for individuals with increased iron needs, such as women.

Arturo Mora, a cook at Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan, created this delicious steak recipe for you to try at home. For an added boost, pair it with a salad that includes fruits like strawberries or citrus, which are rich in Vitamin C and help your body absorb iron more effectively.

The Purpose Behind the Passion

SHELLEY BERKE, PHYSICAL THERAPIST INPATIENT REHAB FACILITY

Methodist Hospital | Texsan

“At Texsan, we truly care for our patients like family. My goal is to treat everyone equally, ensuring that each patient feels valued and respected. I am committed to advocating for my patients whenever necessary, standing up for their needs and rights. I find joy in getting to know them on a personal level, learning their unique stories, and understanding what matters most to them. This connection not only enriches my work but also helps me provide the best care possible.”

BRENDA LACEWELL, DIRECTOR OF LIVER DISEASE AND TRANSPLANT CLINIC

Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant

“I’ve spent my entire nursing career at Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant with the Transplant Team. I started in the Transplant Care Unit in July 2006 and was the director for about 15 years. I moved over to the outpatient Liver Clinic in late 2025 – it’s a different spot but still under the WORLD CLASS transplant umbrella! I still remember driving up my very first day – a little nervous but very excited! I’ve loved every minute of my nearly 19 years here! My favorite part is the relationships I’ve built - with our team, the physicians, the patients and families and the students. Being the starting place for so many fantastic nurses and techs is truly an honor. So often people tell us we are special and different – it’s something I KNOW but hearing it never gets old!”

APRIL ARREDONDO, DIRECTOR OF CASE MANAGEMENT

Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak

“I choose to work for Methodist Healthcare because of the impact I know my actions are having on the community. As the Director of Case Management leading a team that champions length of stay and throughput, I love that we are not only taking care of our patients in the hospital by providing timely and safe discharge planning, but also contributing to Methodist Healthcare Ministries, which help so many of the uninsured and under-served in our community. The impact is huge and far reaching. It is very fulfilling knowing that I am making a difference further than the walls of Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak just by coming to work every day.”

WHITNEY BROWNTOMPKINS, WOUND/ INFUSION REGISTERED NURSE

Methodist Hospital | Hill Country

“I was headed to college to become a dentist when a close family member became ill and needed life-saving measures at our small rural hospital in Colorado. Our family was touched by some incredible nurses. I knew at that time that my career would be in nursing. I wanted to care for and be part of the community that I lived in, helping people heal and manage daily health challenges.”

KAITLIN STEIN, REGISTERED NURSE

Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan

“I got into healthcare because I always knew I wanted to help other people and make a positive impact. I found the right path for me in nursing by chance. I originally wanted to make a difference by being a teacher, but during class one day, I had the opportunity to watch an open-heart surgery. From that moment, I knew I loved the environment of a healthcare setting, and that nursing was the right profession for me to give back to others.”

BRITTANY WARD, REGISTERED NURSE

Methodist Hospital | Atascosa

“I chose to be a nurse because I truly believe God placed that calling in my heart from a young age. I love being able to make a difference in someone’s day, even with just the smallest gesture or a simple smile. I chose healthcare because it brings me great happiness to be there for people and their families during their most vulnerable times. The Atascosa team truly feels like a family to me, and I knew it was the best place for me to grow and make an impact.”

Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills

“My Why is my team. I have always loved patient care but over time I realized my real purpose was leading and supporting the new generation of nurses. I take pride in fostering an environment where nurses genuinely enjoy delivering care. My mission is to build a space where nurses can thrive, grow and find purpose in their work, especially young nurses who are just beginning their journey in this field. I strive to develop my teamʼs confidence and skills to take on new opportunities in advancing our profession. The work we do now shapes the care of tomorrow.”

FABIAN CHAMBERLAIN, LEAD PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN MEDICAL/SURGICAL

Methodist Hospital | Northeast

“I have a calling to help others during their challenging times. A single act of caring can ripple out in ways you may never see. The gratitude people show when you do even the smallest things for them or their families is a powerful reminder of the positive difference we can make in each other’s lives.”

Families from across the Hill Country attended, gaining peace of mind as they geared up for a year of competitive sports and physical activity.

A Birthday to Remember in the PICU

Team members at Methodist Children’s Hospital recently helped celebrate a very special milestone — Amaris’s first birthday.  Surrounded by her family and care team, Amaris marked the occasion in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where she had been receiving care for the past three months.

Her mother, Sabrina, shared that while she never imagined celebrating her daughter’s first birthday in a hospital room, the day turned out to be deeply meaningful. “It may not have been the setting I once dreamed of, but it was exactly where God wanted us to be,” she said. “After everything she’s been through, to see her surrounded by so much love and support—it feels like the miracle I had prayed for all along.”

Sabrina expressed heartfelt gratitude to the PICU team, describing them as family. “Every milestone, every little victory—they’re right there with us cheering us on,” she said. “This journey has been heavy at times, but the love and support from her team has carried us through.”

The system's ability to calculate and store patient radiation doses further enhances its efficiency, enabling staff to focus more on patient care.

“This investment showcases our commitment to innovation and our mission to provide compassionate care,” said Kevin Scoggin, Chief Executive Officer at Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant. “By integrating advanced technology, we are not only improving the patient experience but also supporting continuous research and development.”

The system is designed to improve the early detection of diseases through whole-body digital SPECT imaging and 3D mapping. Its theranostic capability allows for personalized cancer treatment by combining diagnostic imaging with targeted therapy. This technology will lead to improved clinical outcomes and speed up diagnoses and treatments, ultimately enhancing preventable outcomes for patients.
