Above: Dan Miller, President and CEO of Methodist Healthcare

2024 was a year of meaningful progress and renewed purpose for Methodist Healthcare. As we continue our mission of “Serving humanity to honor God by providing exceptional and cost-effective healthcare, accessible to all,” our focus remains on expanding access to care, investing in talent, and strengthening community partnerships that support long-term well-being.

One of our most exciting events in 2024 was the opening of Methodist Hospital | Westover Hills in November. This modern facility brings muchneeded acute care and emergency services to the growing northwest San Antonio community, offering specialty care in cardiovascular health, women’s services, surgery, orthopedics, and more. We also opened Methodist ER | Bulverde, giving residents in Bulverde immediate access to emergency care close to home.

Our dedication to cultivating the next generation of healthcare leaders was shown by the successful launch of our Graduate Medical Education program, welcoming our first class of General Surgery and Internal Medicine residents. At the same time, we celebrated a major recruitment achievement by exceeding our goal for new graduate nurses, with nearly 1,000 nurses joining our team in 2024.

Caring for our communities goes beyond our hospital walls. With the support of the HCA Healthier Tomorrow Fund, we placed blood pressure machines in 13 YMCA locations across San Antonio to support heart health year-round. During Heart Month, we teamed up with the American Heart Association and the San Antonio Spurs to train 1,000 fans in Hands-Only CPR during a home game which is an exciting example of education and action coming together.

We also partnered with Methodist Healthcare Ministries through out the year for some exciting community events. Two of the largest events were our Heart Health Fair attended by 500

community members that took place during February’s heart month and our annual Christmas Tree donation event that gives out over 100 trees that were decorated and donated by staff at our Methodist Healthcare hospitals.

Methodist Healthcare staff from across the system, as well as the community we serve, showed up at the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk, hosted at our new Westover Hills campus. More than 4,000 participants joined us to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer support, helping generate over $228,000 at our San Antonio event.

In 2024, each of our hospitals rose to meet a challenge from South Texas Blood and Tissue Center to participate in the “Commit 4 Compassion” blood drive initiative. Each facility held quarterly blood drives which collected over 1,100 units of lifesaving blood.

Our commitment to excellence did not go unnoticed. In 2024, Methodist Healthcare was honored with multiple industry awards, including being named a Fortune 100 Top Hospital, one of Healthgrades’ 250 Best Hospitals, and receiving the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award, Premier 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital recognition, and the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award.

Each of these milestones reflects the heart of who we are: a team driven by purpose, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to those we serve. I am incredibly proud of the work we’ve accomplished together, and even more inspired by what lies ahead. Thank you for trusting us with your care and for allowing us to grow with you, for you.

Formed in 1995 by Methodist Hospital’s Board of Trustees, Methodist Healthcare created a 50-50 partnership between Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas Inc., South Texas’ largest nonpublic funding source of community health care for uninsured patients, and HCA Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of health care services. This creates a unique avenue to ensure that Methodist Healthcare Ministries continues to benefit the community by providing quality care to all and charitable care when needed.

DEDICATION TO OUR PATIENTS

Pastoral Care

At Methodist Healthcare hospitals, pastoral care is part of the life of the hospital. It is essential in completing the patient’s circle of healing which includes mind, body, and spirit. It’s also an important way to help patients connect and communicate during a very stressful time in their lives.

“Humans are spiritual beings,” said Dr. Austin Frederick, Jr., Vice President of Pastoral Care Services. “Spirituality is an important aspect of healing and our commitment to pastoral care puts that aspect of healing to work.”

At Methodist Healthcare hospitals, chaplains are part of the medical team and reflect an interdisciplinary approach. Every newly admitted patient is visited by a chaplain within the first 24 hours of their stay. Last year, over 400,000 visits were made and the number continues to increase.

“We conduct a spiritual assessment to determine the object of their spiritual strength and to look into how connecting with that strength may enhance their healing,” he said. “We want to connect spiritually to that which feeds their soul.”

Methodist’s Pastoral Care department includes 44 chaplains on staff, with 34 of them full-time employees. Ten different

faiths or traditions are represented on staff, and others are available through community resources.

“During our visits, we work to create a sacred space where people may communicate with each other and say things that need to be said. We help patients and their families come to peace. At the moment of death, to see the patient at peace and the family at peace, is beautiful,” Dr. Frederick explains.

Chaplains facilitate communication in other ways. “We walk with our patients,” he said. Dr. Frederick recalls a patient who did not want to tell his children that he had cancer. “In this case, our chaplain offered to be there so he and the patient could deliver the news together,” he said.

In walking with their patients, chaplains often take them back to a time when spirituality was part of their lives—

grandma took them to church or they attended Sunday school with friends. Lessons learned early come back to them.

Dr. Frederick recalled a patient whose room was filled with friends and loved ones, many of whom appeared to be gang members. “When the Catholic priest entered the room, there was nothing but respect and reverence,” said Dr. Frederick. “They all knew the rosary and recited it.” He also remarked that some patients dealing with Alzheimer’s still can recite the Lord’s Prayer or favorite hymns.

Charity Care

As part of our mission, Methodist Healthcare provides care to patients without the financial means to pay for hospital services. Services will be provided to all patients who present themselves for care at any Methodist Healthcare facility ER without regard to race, creed, color, or national origin and who are classified as financially or medically indigent.

Because of the way it helps patients connect and communicate during such important times of their lives, pastoral care is an essential part of the Methodist Healthcare mission of “Serving Humanity to Honor God.”   “Our founders have been committed to it since the beginning, and we continue to uphold this commitment,” said Dr. Austin. “The world longs for spiritual connection. Today, pastoral care is more relevant than ever in our world. It helps our patients heal and makes a difference in their lives.”

Clinical Pastoral Education Training

With the important role that pastoral care plays at Methodist Hospitals, training has become even more important.

Methodist Healthcare has started its Clinical Pastoral Education Training and Introduction to Hospital Chaplaincy Program. Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is a unique interfaith experience, open to people of all faiths. Methodist Healthcare, in partnership with the Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT), offers CPE to spiritual professionals and theological students seeking professional growth and development in clinical pastoral settings.

“We are revitalizing our clinical pastoral education program,” said Dr. Austin Frederick, Jr., Vice President of Pastoral Care Services. “We want to reach out to individuals interested in clinical pastoral education to help them determine if it’s the right path for them.”

The educational training includes four units of 300 hours each, followed by the opportunity to apply for board

certification. The training helps chaplain candidates perfect their listening skills, learn how to conduct a spiritual assessment, and learn to walk with patients in their healing.

The clinical training is held at one of our Methodist Healthcare locations in the San Antonio area. Classes are taught both inperson and virtually.

Offered nationally, the program is the gold standard for CPE. Ninety-two percent of Methodist Healthcare chaplains are board-certified, and new chaplains are encouraged to apply for certification.

All program costs are covered by the Methodist Healthcare Pastoral Care Services department and the Taylor Boone Scholarship Fund. A stipend is paid for each of the required 25 clinical hours/week.

The application is available at SAHealth. com/careers or interested individuals should phone 210-575-4030 for assistance.

Our Commitment to Quality

Methodist Healthcare System is committed to providing exceptional care for patients experiencing a stroke or stroke like symptoms. Every year, approximately 800,000 people in the US have a stroke1. A stroke can happen to anyone, so it’s important to know the signs of a stroke, personal risk factors and how to protect yourself.

How to spot a stroke: BE FAST

B – Balance – Does the person have a sudden loss of balance?

E – Eyes – Has the person lost vision in one or both eyes?

F – Face – Does the person’s face look uneven?

A – Arms – Is one arm hanging low down?

S – Speech – Is the person’s speech slurred? Does the person have trouble speaking or seem confused?

T – Time – Time to call 911. Seeking emergency care is imperative to optimal outcomes. An ambulance is the fastest and safest transportation to the ER. EMS teams can begin the assessment and treatment in route to the closest ER.

A large majority of strokes can be prevented:

• Manage your blood pressure – Lowering your blood pressure reduces your risk of stroke.  According to the 2025 American Heart Association Statistical Update, nearly half of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it.

• Live a healthy lifestyle – Eating well, staying active, quitting smoking and managing stress can all help lower your stroke risk 2 .

• Monitor health conditions – Conditions like atrial fibrillation (AFib), diabetes and high cholesterol increase stroke risk. Work with your health care provider to manage them.

• Reduce risk for a second stroke - Nearly 1 in 4 survivors will have another stroke3 , in some instances because they don’t know what caused the first stroke. Testing to identify cause and additional risk factors can help you and your health care team develop a plan to prevent another one.

Methodist Healthcare ER physicians evaluating a patient with stroke symptoms will collaborate with EMS to identify that a patient is arriving to the ER with symptoms, call an in-house stroke alert to activate the entire stroke team simultaneously as well as prep the CT scanner for stroke protocol brain imaging if indicated. Based on the CT scan results, the physician leading the stroke team, may order Tenecteplaste or TNK which is a thrombolytic medication to dissolve blood clots causing the stroke. The effectiveness if TNK is time-dependent, meaning it is crucial to administer it quickly after stroke symptoms begin (within 4.5 hours of the start of stroke symptoms).

Since 2023, MHS has been focused on improving Door To Needle Times (DTN). DTN is the time elapsed between a stroke patient's arrival at the ER and the administration of a thrombolytic medication. From 2023 to 2025, MHS has improved overall percentage of DTN zero to 45 minutes by 48%.

Median Door-to-Needle Time

Methodist Healthcare has three Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke programs at Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak, Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan and Methodist Hospital | Northeast. Additionally, Methodist Hospital is a Comprehensive Stroke Center certified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV). A comprehensive stroke program provides the highest level of stroke care, including specialized diagnostics, around the clock availability of experts including vascular neurologists, neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists and other specialists.

HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS

Blue Bird Volunteers in 2024

In 1920, a group of young adults at Laurel Heights Methodist Church founded the “Blue Birds of Laurel Heights.” They had one aim – service; one hope – forgetfulness of self; one inspiration –the love and fellowship of Jesus Christ.

The Blue Bird, signifying the happiness they hoped to bring into the lives of others, was chosen as their symbol.

In 1947, the Blue Birds established the Nix Tumor Clinic. They employed a visiting nurse for the patients, purchased equipment for the clinic, gave volunteer service, and provided hospitalization for the charity tumor patients in District V, Texas Division American Cancer Society.

The Blue Birds voted to amend their charter in October 1960 to become the Blue Bird Auxiliary to Methodist Hospital. Since that time, the Auxiliary has become actively involved in almost every area of hospital service…and their continued dedication and loyalty have been most instrumental in the growth

and development of the hospital. The Auxiliary now provides support to Methodist Hospital | Specialty and Transplant, Methodist Hospital | Texsan, Methodist Hospital | Northeast, and Methodist Hospital | Metropolitan.

Membership is open to anyone interested in giving freely of themselves to help alleviate the suffering of mankind by performing their duties willingly with love and compassion. The Blue Bird Auxiliary is honored to serve the community and create a network of life-long companions.

For more info on the Blue Birds and how to volunteer, please visit sabluebirds.org.

SUPPORTING OUR COLLEAGUES

Colleague Networks in Motion

In 2024, our Colleague Networks exceeded expectations by hosting innovative events focused on giving back and professional growth. These networks continue to advocate, educate, and work with community organizations to expand their impact.

• 9 colleague networks launched

• 478 employees participated

• 84 events and meetings organized, attended, and executed

Community Service and Engagement

The Colleague Network’s dedication to community service stayed strong in 2024, as we collaborated with 13 nonprofit organizations through volunteering, advocacy, and leadership. A key highlight was our active involvement in the 2024 More Than Pink Walk, supporting Susan G. Komen and the fight against breast cancer. Thanks to our team’s efforts, we helped raise nearly $250,000 to benefit the San Antonio and Jourdanton communities.

St. Mary’s University Partnership

In May 2024, Methodist Healthcare proudly announced a $200,000 gift from HCA Healthcare to St. Mary’s University’s Greehey School of Business. The donation funds scholarships, fellowships, and faculty development in the MBA program. The first group of students has already started building strong relationships and mentorships with St. Mary’s alumni now working at Methodist Healthcare.

INVESTING IN AND ADVANCING CLINICIANS

Methodist Healthcare Nursing Residency Programs

The Methodist Healthcare Nursing Residency Program consists of an intensive structured specialty orientation designed to support the transition of the graduate registered nurse to bedside nursing practice in a specific clinical setting. These include NICU, Pediatrics, L&D, Adult ICU, MedicalSurgical, Progressive Care, Telemetry, Perioperative Services, Rehab, Dialysis, Behavioral Health, Oncology, and Emergency Department.

The paid 10-25 week program is designed for novice nurses with less than six months of acute care experience and includes comprehensive didactic training, robust simulation experiences, clinical preceptorship, as well as BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale, ECG interpretation training, and Crisis Prevention Institute certifications. Each Nursing Residency specialty focuses on developing and validating proficiency in key entry-level technical, interpersonal, and critical

thinking skills required for safe practice. Nurse Residents are introduced to the Methodist Healthcare mission, collaborate with members of the healthcare team, expand their knowledge of regulatory requirements, and benefit from customized career planning during the professional development phase of the program.

Graduate Medical Education

Methodist Healthcare System of San Antonio (MHS) Graduate Medical Education (GME) provides clinical rotation opportunities for affiliated training institutions accredited residency, fellowship, and Medical and Physician Assistant (PA) student programs. We are proud of the clinical experience gained at our facilities.

High School Partnerships

We are proud to partner with high schools that have dedicated healthcare sciences programs across our community. We assist students pursuing careers in the healthcare field by giving them an opportunity to receive credit for clinicals at our hospitals. These students will go on to receive certificates in areas such as Patient Care Tech, Pharmacy Tech, Sterile Processing, Phlebotomy, and EMT.

In the summer of 2024, Methodist Healthcare System and Fox Tech High School collaborated on a 7-week Summer Bridge Program for their unique HTECH program, a variant of PTECH (Pathways in Technology Early Career High School) where the H stands for Healthcare. Each week, Methodist Healthcare professionals visited Fox Tech High School to speak about their roles. Instead of focusing solely on physicians and nurses, the program highlighted areas in radiology, respiratory therapy, surgery and anesthesia where many careers exist in the technician space. The program ended with in an immersive full-day tour of Methodist Hospital, where 90+ students witnessed firsthand the healthcare roles they had learned about, and helped apply the knowledge to real world situations.

Similarly, Educate Texas highlighted Methodist Healthcare's impactful partnership with Fox Tech High School, creating an educational video showcasing our collaboration as a model for other Texas healthcare organizations and PTECH/HTECH programs.

Galen College of Nursing

Galen College of Nursing has been a proud member of the San Antonio nursing education community since the Texas Board of Nursing approved Galen’s Vocational Nurse program in 1990.

In May 2025, Galen College of Nursing celebrated the Grand Opening of its new San Antonio campus, located at 13805 I-10W.  The 150,000-square-foot campus features advanced classroom and clinical technology to encourage hands-on learning mixed with collaborative and creative space. Designed with students in mind, the campus environment reflects a high-quality educational approach and an expression of commitment to students and the community.

Today, Galen is one of the largest nursing educators in South Texas, offering students a cutting-edge approach to nursing education, and graduating hundreds of future nurses each year from their 3-year BSN, VN, and LVN to ADN Bridge programs.

“With partners like Methodist Healthcare, we are so proud to help serve the San Antonio community by graduating confident, wellprepared, and compassionate nurses,” said Dr. Donna Hedges, PhD, MSN, MBA, RN, CNE, Dean of the San Antonio campus. “For more than 35 years, we have been deeply embedded in South Texas to help address the critical nursing shortage and provide better care to our citizens.”

Methodist Healthcare's tuition assistance program includes the HCA Healthcare - Galen College of Nursing Grant, which allows direct billing between our two organizations. That means zero out-of-pocket tuition costs for colleagues pursuing their nursing education.

CARING FOR OUR COMMUNITIES Supporting Local Causes

As Methodist Healthcare, we are proud to offer support to a variety of worthy causes. For over 60 years, Methodist Healthcare has given back to the community through charitable donations, sponsorships, and volunteering. In 2024 alone, we supported 109 local non-profit organizations donating a total of $554,490.

Our Methodist Healthcare employees also provide support and funding to hundreds of non-profit organizations of their choice, through an online giving portal. Our staff donated over $350,000 in 2024.

The portal also allows staff to search for volunteer opportunities throughout our community. Last year, our staff volunteered 5,241 hours which supported 210 different local non-profit organizations.

Partnerships

Methodist Healthcare supports a variety of worthy causes through annual agreements with likeminded organizations. Sharing an enduring purpose to improve the health of our community, our relationships are based on mutual values, goals, and an advocacy for the wellbeing of our area families.

Community Health Needs Assessment and Community Health Priorities

As part of our commitment to the greater San Antonio community, Methodist Healthcare participates in a county-wide health needs assessment every three years. This assessment is conducted through the Health Collaborative, a non-profit convening organization that brings together hospital systems, other healthcare organizations, local government, and non-profit organizations in Bexar County, Atascosa County to identify and solve community health issues through collaboration. Methodist Healthcare is proud to be a founding member of the Health Collaborative.

To work in coordination with other healthcare systems and organizations, businesses, and nonprofits, Methodist Healthcare has adopted the five health priority areas based upon the Bexar County Community Health Assessment, and the Bexar County Community Health Improvement plan. Methodist Healthcare and its hospitals have created community improvement plans based on these five health priorities so we may better serve you and the greater San Antonio community.

Methodist Hospital | Hill Country was acquired in April 2023. They had completed their Community Health Assessment and developed a Community Health Improvement Plan based on their findings covering Gillespie, Blanco, and Kendall Counties.

Call-A-Nurse

We know sometimes you or a loved one may be experiencing a non-life-threatening emergency, and you do not need to call 911, but you could use someone to call and ask for advice about symptoms or if you should make that drive to the ER.

24 hours a day, 365 days a year, you can call our Call-A-Nurse hotline for the appropriate advice. The service is completely free of charge and offered to those with, and without, health insurance. Nurses representing Methodist Healthcare are standing by to personally assist you with medical advice.

Call-A-Nurse for ADULT (210) 575-0355

Call-A-Nurse for CHILD (210) 226-8773

Common reasons we receive calls through the CallA-Nurse program include:

• If you or a loved one is feeling ill, but you aren’t sure how serious it is

• If you need a recommendation on the level of service you or a loved one needs, including next-day appointments, urgent care visits, or emergency room visits

• If an appointment is needed for you or a loved one, you can book a next-day appointment through our Call-A-Nurse hotline

• If you need instructions for tending to a medical issue at home

Kids Teaching Kids

In our fourth year, we're continuing our program aimed at educating kids about healthy eating habits, offering family-friendly physical activity videos, and promoting children's mental health through "Mindful Minutes." Kids Teaching Kids is focused on our 21-Day Healthy Snack Challenge designed for elementary school students. Last year, over 1,750 local students eagerly signed up to participate. Older students also

played a vital role in this program; high school culinary students from the San Antonio area competed to create the best healthy snack recipe. Their recipes were featured in a recipe book distributed to all participants of the 21-day challenge. It's a wonderful blend of education, community engagement, and delicious healthy eating!

Rowan Windham Cereal Drive

Every year, in early June the lobby of our Methodist Children’s Hospital is filled to the brim with boxes of cereal signifying another successful Rowan Windham Memorial Cereal Drive. To reduce summertime childhood hunger in Bexar County and surrounding communities, staff, along with members of the San Antonio community donated a total of 283,601 servings of cereal to the San Antonio Foodbank for children in need.

HCA Hope Fund

Our employees’ first goal is to take care of patients. Methodist Healthcare is also a family of co-workers, and so we take care of each other. The HCA Hope Fund was formed more than 19 years ago in the wake of devastating Florida hurricanes so employees around the country who are in need – and those who want to help – have a single, reliable source to give and receive assistance.

The well-named HCA Hope Fund has offered just that – hope. Its support has helped employees who have suffered everything from loss due to hurricane, tornado, or fire to those dealing with unexpected catastrophic illnesses or accidents. The fund also steps up to aid employees who are dealing with domestic violence, the death

of a loved one, or other special situations. Since its inception, it has helped more than 56,000 families through contributions of $115 million in assistance. In 2024, the HCA Hope Fund provided a total of $657,000 in support to 172 Methodist Healthcare division employees

Crush the Crisis

In October, Methodist Healthcare hosted our 6th annual Crush the Crisis event. Aligned with the DEA’s Drug Take Back Day, we set up medication collection sites at seven of our free-standing ERs, along with a location at the Fredericksburg Police Department. Staff, alongside San Antonio Police Department officers and Fredericksburg Police Department officers, spent the morning collecting unneeded and/ or expired medications. Across the 11 locations, we collected 2,600 lbs.! Many community members we spoke with were grateful to safely dispose of the medications they no longer needed. The goal of the event is to remove over-the-counter and prescription medications from people’s houses where they could be misused.

Car Seat Safety Day

During September, we celebrate Car Seat Safety. In 2024, we partnered with Methodist Healthcare Ministries, the Bluebird Auxiliary, and Safe Kids during National Car Seat Safety Week to provide free installations and car seat checks to over 25 families, and gave away six free car seats to those who needed them.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

We are excited to share major expansion projects happening across several of our campuses to better serve our communities:

Methodist Hospital | Stone Oak
