Dear Reader, As the long hot summer draws to a close, we are proud to present our autumn highlights. Bright Wings, Dappled Things, is a selection of poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ, illustrated with photos by fellow Jesuit, Frank Browne SJ, with introductory notes by Jo O’Donovan. Prayerful Ireland by Helena Connolly is a stunning collection of photographs, reflections and prayers. Our third big book is so secret we can’t put it in our catalogue. We can tell you that it has been especially commissioned by Pope Francis, who has written some of the material. Keep an eye on www.messenger.ie and expect an announcement and surrounding publicity in early November. You will want this book! Recent bestsellers include a ground-breaking work on the synodal Church, The Quiet Revolution of Pope Francis by Gerry O’Hanlon SJ, Alan Hilliard’s Happy to be Holy? on Gaudete et Exsultate and Finding God in a Leaf by Brian Grogan SJ. We publish the third in the popular prayer series by Finbarr Lynch SJ, Meeting Jesus in Prayer and what is sure to become a classic on Ignatian spirituality, God Ever Greater by Brian O’Leary SJ. For the coming liturgical year we have Sacred Space: The Prayerbook 2019, and Martin Hogan’s enlightening commentaries on the weekday readings, I Want to Know Christ. That just leaves Advent and we have a new booklet Waiting in Joy by popular writer John Scally as well as Sacred Space: Advent & Christmas 2018/19. Plenty for everyone – happy reading! Bright Wings, Dappled Things

Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, with Photographs by Fr Browne SJ, and commentaries by Jo O’Donovan

The complex poetry of Hopkins takes on the form of a camera lens through which the ‘dearest freshness’ of the natural world is seen, and the photographs of Fr Browne ‘flame out, like shining from shook foil’ as they seem to speak and become poetry. Poems and photographs are accompanied by an accessible commentary by Jo O’Donovan. She takes the reader through the story of Hopkins’ intellectual development and carefully explains the theological, and philosophical underpinning of his poetry. This book includes previously unseen material from the Irish Jesuit Archives.

Prayerful Ireland Helena Connolly

Ireland has changed dramatically and traditional devotions are no longer part of our everyday lives. Nevertheless, there is an underlying desire for ‘something more’, and that desire has led many to rediscover the riches of our past: the pilgrim paths that crisscross our country from Kerry to Donegal, from Wicklow to Galway. There is beauty and mystery within these landscapes which the early monks celebrated wonderfully in their poetry, and which drew them to God and to prayer. Helena Connolly’s beautiful images will take the reader on a wonderful journey through this Prayerful Ireland.

NEW BOOKS

The Quiet Revolution of Pope Francis A Synodal Catholic Church in Ireland? Gerry O’Hanlon SJ Foreword by Dermot Lane

Pope Francis wants to bring about a quiet revolution within the Catholic Church. He wants a reformed church in which the ‘sense of the faithful’, the instinct of baptised men and women, is given a role in the formation and reception of Church teaching and governance. The model is one of Jesus conversing with his male and female disciples in Palestine – a walking together of the People of God, a ‘synodal’ Church. Gerry O’Hanlon examines this ecclesiological model and the roles within it of pope and bishops, theologians, and all the baptised. He considers the Pope’s strategy of a changed ecclesial structure that would out-live his own pontificate.

Brian Grogan brings the background of Ignatian spirituality and a lived appreciation of God’s creation to his book of meditations on Pope Francis’ Encyclical, Laudato Si’. Rather than an exhaustive explanation of the encyclical, this book serves as a daily invitation to notice in ordinary creation the invitation of God to love and care for all God’s creation.
