Biblical wisdom reminds us that we do not exist in splendid isolation, but that a very condition of our existence is our relationship with others, with our planet and with God. If we are unaware that we are in a relationship of stewardship with the planet, we will continue to destroy it. If we forget that we are in solidarity with others, social injustice will continue. If we forget that we are living in graced dependence we will exploit others.
This book attempts to highlight the value of spirituality and religion and how they complement one another. It discusses the four Jesuit priorities as the way to redress the implosion of our world and in reimagining Christianity in a modern guise. The Jesuit priorities urge us to be reflective, paying attention to our experience of life and learning from it. They stress the urgency of social and climate justice. They challenge us to promote
urgency in the air that the four Jesuit priorities address.
Jim Maher SJ was born in Limerick. He has spent most of his Jesuit life ministering at Crescent College Comprehensive SJ as a teacher of English and R.E. He managed the 5th Year Social Outreach Programme and led 6th Year pilgrimage retreats. He continues to provide pastoral support at Crescent College Comprehensive.
Loneliness and connection are not enemies, rather two facets of everyone’s life. We just need to get to know them. That’s especially true of loneliness, so that, far from being oppressive or a threat, it can become an opportunity or a learning point. Through loneliness we can learn to bond with ourselves and with others. Far from consuming our self-esteem or wearing us out, aloneness can prove an ally in the exciting and complicated battles of life. All we need to do is to discern the heart song of loneliness, so we can learn how to guide our emotions to cope with it. This heart song consists of our acceptance and desire, our lucidity and awareness, our memory and hope, our faith and inner turmoil. All of that is in this book: loneliness and connection. Silence and music.
José María R. Olaizola SJ is a Jesuit priest and writer. His fields of interest are theology, sociology and spirituality. He is currently head of institutional communication for the Society of Jesus in Spain. He has an active social media presence, with pastoralsj and rezandovoy among his projects. Among his best-known works are Joy, Even at Night, Today is Now: Solid People for Liquid Times and Ignatius of Loyola Never Alone.
Every year millions of people celebrate St Patrick. He is Ireland’s most famous ambassador. Yet, what do we really know about him, about his spirituality, his mission, his vocation? Can we really only say that he was no friend to snakes? Few people realise the connection between Patrick and the Church Fathers. Unlike the writings of Augustine and Paul, Patrick’s spirituality and his writings, which have survived to the present day, have been neglected. In The Spiritual Journey of St Patrick, Adrian Larkin SCC, by uncovering the wealth of references to the Fathers of the Church in Patrick’s own writings, argues the case for recognising and engaging with Patrick’s spiritual legacy to the Church. Larkin encourages us to reframe Patrick as a religious thinker in dialogue with the Church’s past and future.
A classics scholar, barrister and ultimately missionary priest, the late Fr Aidan Larkin led a remarkably varied and fulfilled life. He played a leading role in the development of the SDLP and represented Mid Ulster in Stormont; he also acted as a legal adviser to the Council of Ministers in Brussels. Aged 35 he joined Clonliffe seminary and later joined the Columban Fathers and committed to missionary work.
How our built space is arranged affects us: “He’s invading my space!”; “This room is very homely”; And in every society buildings have been used to project power and authority, to regulate society, and to project an image of how that group sees itself.
Every religion has used buildings as part of their worship: from Newgrange to classical temples to churches built of steel, concrete and glass. And it was this concern of the Second Vatican Council that led to the changes in the arrangements in Catholic Churches in the 1960s and 70s.
This book brings together nineteen Christians – liturgists, pastors, architects, artists – from
several churches and from around the world who all address the question of how space affects us in worship: the role of light, creating space to accommodate liturgical dance, imaginative use of space in liturgy, among others.
Born in Dublin, O’Loughlin’s principal expertise lies in historical theology. He is an expert on how variations in practices and interpretations of Eucharistic celebration can lead to inter-church disagreement and is involved in ecumenical reflections on the nature of eucharistic activity.
What makes a successful life, and how do I decide what do with mine? What does it mean to believe in God? Does God still hold the same meaning and relevance in our time, and if so, how can I tap into that meaning? These are just some of the questions addressed in this new book on how the lived experience of St Ignatius Loyola can be used as a guiding principle towards a more intensely and consciously lived life in today’s world.
It provides an insight into the life of Ignatius, as well as an introduction to Ignatian spirituality, presenting it not as a doctrine, but as a spiritual toolkit from which we can draw strength and knowledge. An illuminating read for those familiar with Ignatius as well as those new to Ignatian spirituality.
A Flemish Jesuit priest, Nikolaas Sintobin SJ has been a teacher and a chaplain in the Jesuit high schools of Paris and Antwerp, specialising in Ignatian spirituality and pedagogy. He has worked as an internet chaplain for the past 10 years, sharing the Gospel in our current secular and multi-religious culture through humour, podcasts, reality TV, YouTube and blogging.
Paul Pace SJ
We are living through a change of era. Guided by Pope Francis, the entire Catholic world is listening for the Spirit and following a synodal path. How do we as Christians live through this time of fundamental change? How do we deal with the changing relationship between the Church and society?
We may find insight from five hundred years ago, from Ignatius of Loyola, who lived in a time of great change and upheaval. He practised a faith that went out into the world and yet was rooted in an extraordinarily inventive and scriptural spirituality.
In Stepping Beyond: Ignatian Reflections for Today, Paul Pace SJ shows how the spirituality of the early Jesuits and especially of Ignatius can help us to adjust to this ‘change of era’. With an introduction to the basics of Ignatius and Ignatian
introducing Ignatian spirituality into our own lives can actually help us step beyond the world we know and into a world where the Spirit is active and the Saviour is at work.
Paul Pace SJ is former Jesuit Provincial in Malta and former director of the Maltese Jesuit Refugee Service. He lectured in Moral Theology at the University of Malta for many years and also spent time in Dublin as Tertian instructor, leading the last phase of Jesuit formation for novitiates.

The summer of 2022 saw an unprecedented heatwave in Spain and the author, a Jesuit priest, was accompanying a Dublin taxi driver on a walking retreat on the Ignatian Camino to Manresa, near Barcelona. This book tells the story of that testing pilgrimage: trying to find a way through severe heat; the challenges of walking together, and negotiating unexpected hurdles; and the retreat that they did together that looked at faith, prayer and blocks to progress. On one level it is a story of friendship between two very different personalities, and also a story of two souls on a spiritual search for God.
As in his other books, Brendan highlights the Ignatian learning points and narrates the many adventures they went through to cope with exceptional circumstances. This is a pilgrimage story of finding God in the messiness of less than ideal situations, developing a heart-warming
friendship, and finding a way through using Ignatian principles of reflection and flexibility.
Brendan McManus SJ works as a Spiritual Director and retreat giver in Belfast. He has published a number of books with Messenger Publications including Channelling the Inner Fire, Contemplating the Camino, Surviving Suicide Bereavement and, co-authored with Jim Deeds, Discover God Daily, the best-selling Finding God in the Mess and Deeper into the Mess.

Modern lives can be very busy, saturated by technology and media. However, it is the time out, the ability to look back and understand life events that brings about deeper, more satisfying living. The spirituality of St Ignatius teaches us that God holds us close, loves us and desires the best for us. It is a solid foundation that we can build our lives on, an anchor in the storms of life, and it can bring us though even the darkest hours. These meditations can be used by individuals or parish groups as a daily prayer source and discussion topic. A perfect gift for someone inviting another to consider “God in all things”
Brendan McManus SJ works as a Spiritual Director and retreat giver in Belfast. Jim Deeds is a poet and author and works in Pastoral Ministry in the Diocese of Down and Connor. As well as this award-winning bestseller, they have together written Discover God Daily: Seven Life-Changing Moments from the Journey of St Ignatius and Deeper Into the Mess: Praying Through Tough Times.

The role that spirituality can play in recovery from addiction is poorly understood. Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung described alcoholism as a ‘spiritual disease’ that demanded a spiritual awakening. How do you have a spiritual awakening, however? How, when you are suffering with addiction, do you find time in everyday life for spirituality?
In Freedom from the Prison of Addiction, Martina Killeavy marries the genius of St Ignatius to the famous Twelve-Step Programme of Alcoholics Anonymous. The result is that a pattern of gratitude, an ability to stay anchored in the present and a facility to find God in all things enters daily life. In that pattern of gratitude and that relationship with God is one path to freedom.
Martina Killeavy is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin with a Masters in Counselling Psychology. She is also a qualified guide of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius.
The Stations of the Cross etch a story of pain and humiliation in the life of Jesus. This book sees Jesus as the guardian of the wounded and the tortured.
Together we discern and dialogue as a church on a Synodal path. This book helps us to discover the paschal (‘pass over’) significance of the cross as a response to the suffering that sears many lives today. Baptism, the Eucharist, the shared commitment of our resources, the living out of radical forgiveness, the inclusive service of compassion to all and the willingness to make sacrifices with the lowest, the least and the lost will lead us to be called the ‘body of Christ.’
The Stations of the Cross lead us, like the Centurion who pierces the side of Christ, to recognise divinity at the heart of humanity.
Fr John Cullen works as chaplain in a care home in London and is the Catholic representative on an interfaith outreach project for homeless people. A native of Co Sligo and a priest for the Elphin diocese, he previously served as diocesan advisor for primary school education in Ireland and was a volunteer missionary in Kenya with Kiltegan Missionaries. A former editor of Intercom magazine, this is his second title with Messenger Publications.
