First Belong to God

On Retreat with Pope Francis Austen Ivereigh

9781788126694 Paperback 192pp 210 x 140mm €19.95 £18.95

Decades before he was elected pope the Jesuit Fr Jorge Mario Bergoglio was a renowned spiritual director and retreat giver, steeped in the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. Drawing on many retreat talks he gave in the 1970s-90s, which have never been translated into English, the Pope’s biographer has created a powerful Ignatian retreat that offers a contemplative route into the key teachings and vision of the Francis pontificate. First Belong to God uses the classic week-long “short form” of the Exercises, linking Ignatius’s famous contemplations with Francis’s call to a synodal, fraternal, and ecological conversion. Each day contains points for reflection taken from Fr Bergoglio’s retreats, as well as guided meditations, Scripture references and suggestions for reading and prayer. First Belong to God can be used as a companion guide either for an individual or group retreat in a formal retreat setting under a director, or by a parish or community over a longer period such as Lent or Advent.

Dr Ivereigh is Fellow in Contemporary Church History at Campion Hall in the University of Oxford Ivereigh is the author of two renowned biographies of Pope Francis: The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope (Henry Holt/Picador 2014/15) and Wounded Shepherd: Francis and his Struggle to Convert the Catholic Church (Henry Holt, 2019). He also collaborated with Pope Francis on his vision for the postCovid world, the New York Times bestseller Let Us Dream: the Path to a Better Future (Simon & Schuster). Emerging from the Mess

Finding Hope in Life’s Storms

Brendan McManus SJ and Jim Deeds

9781788126601 Paperback 136pp 210 x 140mm €12.95 £11.95

Sometimes we forget that just at the darkest hour of night, the dawn will arrive again anew. Our world is not just one of uncertainty, drought, war, and death but also a place of growth and purification. We need to be open to learn about humility, compassion, and grace. Christ reveals our destiny - to be with the Light, breaking open the clouds of isolation. Emerging from the Mess is essentially the experience of how suffering and pain alternates with great joy and fulfilment. When we reach what we believe is the limit of our strength and endurance, we need to remember to hang on, to be patient and faithful in prayer. This book’s challenge is to live every day like a resurrection day. It is all about gratitude: to see the absolute giftedness of every moment, the wonder of every encounter, the silver lining on every cloud.

4 Messenger Publications I Spring 2024

Brendan McManus SJ works as a Spiritual Director and retreat giver in Belfast. Jim Deeds is a poet and author and works in Pastoral Ministry with dioceses and groups across Ireland. Synodality and the Recovery of Vatican II A New Way for Catholics Edited by Stephen McKinney, Thomas O’Loughlin, Beáta Tóth

9781788126724 Paperback 176pp 210 x 140mm €25 £23

Although the notion of the Church as ‘synodal’ has roots in the councils and synods of the early churches, east and west, the notion of ‘synodality’ has only emerged in the past decade as a central theme in Catholic life and thought, portraying a whole new image of the Church. The Church, Pope Francis has said, is called to be synodal as it changes its self-perception from being a power pyramid seeking to impose its vision to being a pilgrim people at the service of humanity. But what are the implications of synodality? The synod in Rome 2023/24 is presently grappling with this question. As part of this synodal engagement, the Catholic Theological Association of Great Britain invited reflections on the topic from members and friends of the association. The resultant essays ponder the importance of synodality, what it means, how it can build on the work of the Second Vatican Council, and how we can engage with it today.

The Great Dreamer

The Life and Mission of St. Francis Xavier Brendan Comerford SJ

9781788126632 Paperback 112pp 210 x 140pp €12.95 £11.95 A short but fascinating biography of this most courageous and adventurous of saints. One of Ignatius of Loyola’s original companions, St Francis was central to the formation of the Society of Jesus. Quoting extensively from his letters, the author describes many stories and anecdotes which bring Xavier to life; we begin to feel we know him well as we learn about his personality, his interactions with the poor and with priests, bishops and kings. On April 7th, 1541, Xavier’s thirty-fifth birthday, he set sail for India, arriving in Goa just over a year later. He spent about 8 years in both India and Indonesia, baptising thousands and working to set up churches and communities. In 1549 he arrived in Japan where he spent a couple of years, before travelling to China where he died in 1552 just six miles from the Chinese coast. This well researched account is very accessible and paints a vivid picture of life as a missionary in the sixteenth century.

Brendan Comerford studied philosophy at the Milltown Institute of Philosophy and Theology, Dublin; theology at the Gregorian University, Rome and spirituality at the Weston School of Theology, Cambridge, Mass. U.S.A. He is an experienced spiritual director. Previous publications include Disciples of Courage: Ten Christian Lives that Inspire (2022) and The Pilgrim’s Story – the Life and Spirituality of St Ignatius Loyola (2017). Keeping the Faith

Foreword by Lord Eames OM Alf McCreary

9781788126786 Paperback 112pp 210 x 140mm €14.95 £12.95

The award-winning Belfast journalist and author here reflects on a long career of reporting on the main events in Northern Ireland and on the aftermath of conflicts in the developing world including Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Rwanda. He observes how the Christian faith has sustained so many people in times of great suffering and distress, and how the mispractice of this faith has led to division, misunderstanding and hostility. McCreary also reflects on his experience of reporting on well-known figures in Northern Ireland and writes about courageous and often unheralded bridge-builders who saw the urgent need for reconciliation. He examines the role of journalists over decades when balanced reporting was so important but at times very difficult, and suggests that truth has never been more in danger than it is today. Alf McCreary brings us with him on his journey of faith through the unholy alliance between

religion and politics. His personal faith in the best of human nature which can inspire even in the worst of times, shines through. Alf McCreary is an award-winning author and journalist, based in Belfast. Formerly a senior writer for the Belfast Telegraph, he was the paper’s Religion Correspondent for 20 years and has won several major UK and Northern Ireland Press Awards for his reporting of the Troubles. He continues to write as a freelance journalist for a wide range of publications.

The Practice of Communal Discernment Michel Bacq & ESDAC Team Edited by Brian Grogan SJ Foreword by Arturo Sosa SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus

9781788126663 Paperback 240pp 210x 140mm €14.95 £12.95

This book is aimed at groups - communities, parishes, institutions, couples, teams, students, young adults - who wish to grow in communion and make decisions together. It is based on the wisdom and practices of ESDAC, a Christian, Ignatian, international association that puts Ignatian spirituality at the service of groups. ESDAC offers, in various ways, a journey of discernment inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius. It encourages participants to learn to communicate better with each other, so that everyone is listened to and dares to express themselves. Its members help to discern the call that the Lord addresses to them today, by listening to each individual and to the whole group. This comprehensive guide shares numerous examples and provides a ‘toolbox’ which will help leaders to implement the programme in practice.

Brian Grogan SJ is a former President of Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy, Dublin, and is Emeritus Associate Professor of Spirituality. A best-selling author, other titles published with Messenger Publications include Pedro Arrupe: A Heart Larger than the World, Finding God in a Leaf and I Am Infinitely Loved. Christ’s Seven Words from the Cross John Mann

9781788126755 Paperback 80pp 210 x 140pp €11.95 £10.95 As the Church Year passes we anticipate the next festival and season. So, Advent passes into Christmas and Epiphany but the approach of Ash Wednesday can sometimes catch us unawares, especially in a year with an early Easter. St Brigid’s Day and Candlemas, set at the beginning of February, warn us that we need to think about how to make the most of the weeks to pray our way, once more, through the days of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. By taking the Cross, and even more specifically, the words Jesus spoke while nailed to that Cross, over the course of some weeks, rather than a few hours on Good Friday, we have time to consider more deeply the inner themes and conclusions. This meditation will help us to prepare for Holy Week, with a mind and heart familiar with the readings and ready to be filled with our own prayerful reflections. This book aims to prompt a mindset of deliberately slowing the pace of the contemplation of Christ’s words, especially those from the Cross.

John Mann is an Anglican priest and former dean of St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast. He was awarded the Lambeth Cross for Ecumenism by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2018 and holds an honorary D.Litt from Ulster University.
