Bass Coast attendees will be putting their feelers out at the third installment of the Merritt-based electronic music and arts festival the weekend of July 10.

This year’s theme is tentacles, or more specifically “Tentacular” — a fusion of the word “tentacle” and “spectacular.”

“It’s about interconnectivity, and it’s also about exploring the world through feeling,” Bass Coast communications manager Paul Brooks said of this year’s theme.

It is meant to embody reaching outside one’s comfort zone to strive for the richness of interconnectivity, Brooks explained.

Originating from that point of the festival grounds, tentacles will extend throughout the site.

“They’re just going to go everywhere,” Brooks said.

Last year, the main stage for Bass Coast featured a pirate ship placed so that it appeared to be sinking into the stage itself.

Brooks said this year’s stage has been in the works since last September, after the 2014 stage was torn down.

He said the design and funding to build the 2015 stage are in place and construction is ready to begin.

Their first year in Merritt, Bass Coast had a theme titled The Year of the Zebra, which resulted in various black-and-white striped outfits. The year after that, their theme

Mutiny elicited various piratethemed costumes.

“It’s pretty easy to put on an eyepatch, or find a pirate hat, or dress up like a pirate. A lot of our attendees look like pirates anyways,” Brooks said.

“This year with Tentacular, we thought it’d be funny and interesting to see people incorporating tentacles into their outfits.”

The festival is capped at 3,000 attendees and Brooks said there are less than 1,000 tickets remaining.

“We are headed for a sellout year,” he said.

Merrittonians can purchase discounted tickets at 378 Board Shop with proof of residence.

It kicks off Friday night with performances by J Phlip, Justin Martina and Aradalan.

they are looking forward to a theatrical performance from New York City’s Zebra Katz that weekend.

She said the duo put on an entertaining show with costume changes, and antics on stage.

New this year to Bass Coast will be a cafe in the food court area equipped with a stage and seating for live performances.

The event’s workshop area will also be expanded this year, taking up an entire building and incorporating more seating.

“Our workshops are looking great this year [with] everything from cooking, to relationship advice, to dance, to holistic nutrition,” Brooks said.

As for art installations, Brooks said there will be more than 50 this year, many of which will be new pieces.

The Wildfire Management Branch is putting a campfire ban in place after Canada Day. All open fires are prohibited starting at noon on Friday, July 3 throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The fire ban is in place indefinitely and has been issued to help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety, the Wildfire Management Branch states.

About half of the 128 wildfires in the Kamloops Fire Zone since April 1 this year were not sparked naturally.

The number of fires is up compared to the 10 year average for this time of 109 wildfires, she said.

There have been a few lightning-caused tree fires in the Merritt Fire Zone as of late, but they have all been extinguished, Pepper said.

Despite widespread rain on Monday, conditions are expected to dry out by the weekend, elevating the wildfire risk.

How a mistake made 35 years ago has made a Merritt family’s driveway inaccessible, and what can — and can’t — be done about it David Dyck THE MERRITT HERALD

McGoran Street, behind and to the east of the arena, runs north off of Merritt Avenue until it intersects with McGoran Place. Up until a year ago, it used to continue another 20 meters into an open field, but now there’s a chain running across, blocking access. The problem for Darel Redman and Angela Papou is that their driveway is between that chain and the field.

Redman and Papou bought their house, which was built at the intersection of McGoran Place and McGoran Street, about nine years ago. They say it was sold to them as a house on a dead-end street.

They had been using that dead-end road for years, as had their neighbours. They rode their bikes on it, neighbourhood kids played street hockey and basketball on it. Most importantly for them, they used it to access

their driveway.

One day several years ago they received a visit from the owner of the farmland, Paul Simon, a local doctor.

He informed them the 20 metres of McGoran Street, from the field to where it intersected with McGoran Place, was in fact an extension of his land to the north, where his house is located.

“Honestly, it was a shock. Not just to us,” said Papou of her reaction to the news. Their neighbours and even city officials were also surprised to find out the road was not public.

In spite of this new information, they still continued to use the road, since it was the only way they were able to access their driveway.

Previous to Simon purchasing it, the Bouchard family had owned the farmland.

Built in 1978, the Papau’s house is part of that McGoran Place subdivision, put in by the Bouchards. The plan was for it to continue farther north, develop-

ing the open farmland that still sits there today.

But instead of continuing, the subdivision stopped, at what most of the neighbourhood thought was the end of that dead-end road.

“The Bouchards who owned the property were in the process of having it made an access road, but didn’t quite get finalized before he died.

It was that close,” said Linda Clarke. Clarke and her husband live next door to Papou and Redman, across the road in question.

The Clarkes, however, still have access to their driveway, since it enters onto McGoran Place rather than McGoran Street.

Papou agreed.

“When this happened and we first found out . . . [we contacted her],” she said. “She thought [the transfer] was done.”

Just knowing that the road was private rather than public was stressful for Papou and Redman, but their lives were not disrupted until last summer, when the barricade

was put up separating the public road from the private. It also cut off Papou’s driveway access, forcing them to park on the street through last winter.

It is a situation that the city is also familiar with. Allan Chabot, the city’s chief administrative officer, has a large file in his office full of documentation on this issue.

He said he’s had multiple conversations with city staff, Papou, Redmond and Simon to try and broker a resolution, to no avail.

“The city feels some moral responsibility to try and resolve this matter,” he told the Herald.

“Some confusedly think that it was wrong of the city to have issued a building permit. I don’t think they could have refused one — being on the basis of the house facing that way — if they’d wanted to.”

Chabot said the city has done their best to find a solution.

Mud racing is all about speed, power and making the gooey stuff fly. But for some, it’s also a family affair.

Local Jack Maunu has been mud racing for 25 years, and this past weekend, he introduced his 14-year-old son Jesse to the sport at the North West Mud Racing Association’s mud bogs held in Collettville, where 2,000 horsepower hot rods tore through 200-foot pits of mud in just seconds.

Jesse competed in a race as he participated in the entry level A Class races – the only class that allows 14-year-olds to participate.

On Saturday, just hours before his first race of the day, Jesse said he was nervous. “I’ve never done anything like this before,� he said. “I remember my first race. I was pretty nervous too,� Jack responded as the two spoke to the Herald at the race grounds Saturday.

Jack was just 25-years-old when he first took an interest in mud bogging. “I went to one of these races and watched one and decided it was what I wanted to do,� Jack reminisced.

He said the power of the vehicles captivated him.

Jack’s nickname for the F-Class paddle car he currently races is The Dirty Mudder, which he’s had a personal best of 2.42 seconds through the 200-foot pit of mud.

The car he originally started mud racing with a quarter century ago was a 1968 El Camino, which he built and subsequently sold.

Jesse got to experience his first race flying through the mud in thatvery same El Camino.

Additional parking spots required for new gym The following is an excerpt from the City of Merritt public hearing agenda June 23, 2015.

Report on zoning amendment with variance at 2190 Voign St. Executive summary: An application has been received by Merritt Automotive Supplies Ltd. at 2190 Voght St., for a site specific zoning amendment to add ‘Participant Recreation Services Indoor’ and ‘Personal Service Establishment’ and ‘Office’ as permitted uses in the Highway Commerical (C4) zone.

The zoning amendment is specific to this property only, and would allow the owner to lease the building to a wider range of businesses.

The applicant has an agreement in place with a ladies-only fitness gym subject to zoning.

The land is zone C4, Highway Commerical and gyms are not permitted use in C4. C4 zoning is primarily geared for the traveling public.

Over the years the space has been used for automotive supply, a computer service and supply shop, an automotive detailing site, and a specialty automotive sales location.

It currently sits vacant and the property owner wants to add additional permitted uses so that businesses such as a gym could occupy the empty space.

The challenge in filling the vacant lease space on the property is a nine space parking shortage based on the zoning bylaw requirements that requires 11 for a gym.

There are only two available parking stalls that can be allocated to the gym because the other 11 in the front are consumed by the parking requirements of Yaki Joe’s and Subway.

The applicant will create three new parking stalls behind the building, bringing the total to five physical off-street parking stalls.

Additionally, the applicant will, at his cost, line-paint six parking stalls in the large empty city lot directly between the Inn Towne Motel and Suites and the Civic Centre adjacent to the waste bin enclosure.

Also, the applicant will provide an executed memorandum of understnading (MOU) with each tenant on the property that clearly indicates the lack of parking; that will require all owners, managers and employees of those businesses to park off-site and not on the immediately adjacent roadway;

and the new business (Planet Woman Fitness) will advertise in regular and ongoing literature to all new and existing members that walking, biking and transit is encouraged, and indicate that parking is available in the parking lot near the Civic Centre and behind the arena.

Furthermore, the applicant will contribute $3,500 to the parking reserve fund which currently sits at approximately $70,000.

The parking reserve fund is accrued for the provision of future offstreet parking lots as needed.

Finally, the city’s building inspector will restrict the occupant load to 12 persons at a time which could, under optimal conditions, be as high as thirty plus.

Finally, in addition

to the above-noted solutions, and in order to legalize use of this portion of the building, a development variance permit is necessary prior to adoption of the zoning amendment to legitimize the reduction in parking requirements.

Background: The situation on this land is inherited.

The fact is that there were not enough parking spaces allocated at the time of the original development. By applying the letter of the bylaw, the vacant lease space is sterilized from any use that requires more than two parking spaces. It is not, however, in the best interest of the owner nor the city to have highly visible vacant commercial lease space.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure advises the public of scheduled full highway closures on Highway 1, twelve kilometres north of Lytton at Tank Hill Bluff for rock drilling and blasting.

Closures are expected to take place between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8 and Thursday, July 9.

No detours will be provided.

Please watch for traffic control personnel and follow all signs through the area. Your patience during these closures is appreciated.

The situation becomes even more complicated. Simon currently accesses his home via a road farther east.

Part of that road crosses city land, which Simon is allowed to legally cross through an access egress agreement that expires in 2019.

After that, the road running in front of Papau’s driveway will become the only legal access to Simon’s home.

The city has explored some other options.

They’ve looked into the possibility of claiming the road has been maintained by the city, which would make it a public road.

“There’s a regulation associated with Section 54 with the Transportation Act that says that if public money is spent on a road, other than for snow or ice control, then it becomes — for all intents and purposes — a public road.”

Explained Chabot. “[However], Our records do not allow us to make that argument, legally.”

A more dramatic approach, brought to city council by the late councillor Harry Kroeker, was expropriation.

In fall of last year, council voted to approve his motion instructing staff to look into the possibility of seizing

the road from Simon.

Chabot said that legal counsel was obtained in accordance with that directive, but those conversations are confidential.

Papou said it’s frustrating that the house they bought was not in fact the corner lot they thought they were getting. “This is our biggest investment. In fact, this is all we have,” she said.

“At this point it’s not only inconvenient, it’s also a little embarrassing, and the winter time was awful,” said Papou.

She said they did what they could to make it safe, but she fell and injured herself at one

point and had to miss work in order to recover.

“As much as I’d like to have this road back, at this point we just need safe access to our home,” she said.

That, again, is easier said than done.

Underneath Papou’s front yard, where a new driveway could presumably be installed, there is “every line you can imagine” — hydro, cable, water, sewer, etc.

sewer were at a sufficient depth there that they could level that area.”

“I do see the situation as regrettable for all parties,” said John Isaac, the real estate agent who originally sold them the home. “I understand the city and the landowners are trying to work something out, and I hope cool heads prevail and they do find a solution.”

B.C. still the Wild West for elections VICTORIA – The man behind “HarperPAC” says it lived and died in a few days to make a point about third-party TOM FLETCHER advertising in B.C. Canadian poli- VIEWS tics.

When it launched, I wondered why he would choose such a deliberately provocative name.

No, not “Harper,” but the acronym for “Political Action Committee,” which has come to symbolize the financial excesses of U.S. politics.

HarperPAC ran one radio ad, accusing Liberal leader Justin Trudeau of blaming voters for his declining popularity, and suggesting that Trudeau’s “months of mistakes” are a likelier cause. No kidding.

HarperPAC spokesman Stephen Taylor, who like Stephen Harper before him has worked for the National Citizens’ Coalition, announced the end of the project last week.

“We have contributed to a new discussion about political financing in a fixed election era that is critical to our democracy,” Taylor said.

“We note that this discussion only occurred once a right-wing analog of the left’s PAC-style efforts emerged on the scene.”

Indeed, it was when HarperPAC emerged that muttering began about “dark money” in Canadian politics. Unifor, Anti-Conservative front LeadNow and the many faces of the Tides Foundation somehow failed to ignite much discussion in the Canadian media.

With this new agreement, the FFSBC will be able to do much more than just stocking lakes with fish.

The new funding agreement will enable it to work closely with biologists to improve fish habitats and support fishing opportunities throughout the province, assess fish stock management decisions and monitor compliance and enforcement on stocked and wild water bodies.

With this additional funding, the FFSBC is now recognized as one of the most progressive and

accomplished fisheries management organizations in all of North America, generating economic benefits and providing worldclass angling opportunities.

Given how popular recreational fishing is with residents and tourists in our province, this is an important decision.

Besides promoting recreational fishing, the society operates many fish hatcheries and education centres throughout the province, invests time and money to fish stock health and development research and conservation and fish recovery activities, among

many other programs.

The great work the FFSBC does can be witnessed right here in the Nicola Valley with the hundreds of lakes that are stocked with fish that are raised in one of the many hatcheries in the area.

These lakes attract anglers from all over the province and even from abroad.

Every year when temperatures become warmer we see wave after wave of vehicles towing boat trailers descending upon our quaint town.

I have for many years been an advocate of programs similar to the American PittmanRobertson Act. This is a law that was enacted in 1937, and named after the two senators that sponsored it.

It that stipulates that all revenue from hunting and fishing licences, plus the revenue from a special “Sportsman Tax” added to any goods and services related to hunting and fishing must go back into wildlife and habitat conservation.

YOUR OPINION Third party spending Canada Day at the horseraces unrestricted in B.C. From Page 6 Taylor launched the bid in response to the emergence of “Engage Canada,” a union-financed action committee that he said was part of a broader effort by the left to oust the Conservatives.

Engage Canada portrays itself as a brave alternative to shadowy right-wing groups such as Working Canadians, which has also run pro-Conservative ads.

Engage Canada’s latest ad plays on the union movement’s cherished “inequality” theme, selecting statistics to portray the wealthy as making out far better than the rest of us in Harper’s Canada. (The notion that “inequality” can and should be fixed by ever-higher taxes on “the rich” staggers on, zombielike, as if capitalism was the cause of poverty.)

Two recent developments have led to all this.

Scheduled elections every four years have finally taken effect at the federal level, after a series of minority governments. And courts have repeatedly struck down efforts to restrict third-party spending in the so-called “pre-campaign” period as an unwarranted restriction on free speech.

The B.C. Liberal government tried and failed several times to restrict third party spending, largely in response to the million-dollar tirades of the teachers’ union. Former attorney general Wally Oppal used to warn about American-style influence by wealthy interest groups targeting scheduled elections.

Their strategy was not so much to keep corporate money out of B.C. politics as to keep it flowing through the B.C. Liberal Party.

This spring the B.C. Liberal majority passed Bill 20, the Election Amendment Act. Not only did this recognize the freedom of outsiders to weigh in on elections, it also did away with pre-campaign restrictions on registered political parties and candidates.

NDP MLA Leonard Krog warned that this sets the stage for “some mad Wild West show,” with politicians so desperate to raise money they start looking for the B.C. equivalent of renting out the Lincoln bedroom in the White House.

The big difference between the pre-campaign ads for this fall’s federal election and the next provincial vote in 2017 is that corporate and union donations to parties and candidates have been eliminated at the federal level. That means more money available for third-party campaigns, but it seems to be fairly well distributed between the two sides, the Conservatives and everybody else.

Here in the Wild West, nothing’s going to change as long as the B.C. Liberals are in the saddle.

JEANETTE MCMASTER In FRIENDSHIP July 1 was a holiday our people looked forward to.

I watched my dad, Billy McLeod, as he trained his two racehorses, Big Red and Blondie.

My dad had one young man, Hank Charters, as his Jockey.

He was healthy and strong, but light.

Hank trained with the horses as often as he could. The training would take place in a field behind the corrals at the Manuel homestead that the men made into a racetrack.

Of course several people were involved with the training.

Clement, who had a stop watch, was the timer.

The race horses had to have special grains, with oats and vitamins in their daily diet.

The grooming of the horses, such as their daily brushing down, was done by another hired hand.

I remember so well the horse barn, and the little creek which ran closeby. There were small willow trees along the creekside, when we watered the horses, we used to enjoy the rippling sound of the cool waters as they flowed gently over the little rocks, especially in the very hot summers.

My dad would use the telephone at the Douglas Lake store to phone the people in Kamloops about the dates and times of the races.

He also made arrangements for stalls where Big Red and Blondie would be taken care of.

Then he made plans for our camp, too. The campsite was by the highway that led to the race tracks. The raceway was across the river from the Kamloops Indian residential school.

All this had to be done sometimes one month before the horseraces.

So many things had to be done, like packing tents and personal items like towels, bar soap and blankets.

One thing we did not pack was cooking utensils, as we ate well at the race tracks.

My brother Clement, my sister-in-law Elizabeth, Sera, Ronnie, and I would travel in our old Chevy.

Dad, Clarence and a hired hand would ride in a buggy with the tents and other supplies, over the mountains by Glimpse Lake to the campsite.

It was a lot of work, but we had fun.

Then came the day of the races. We all got into our car and drove to the race tracks. My dad was already there.

Sera, Ronnie, William, and I were in the crowd. When the bugle sounded, it meant everyone who was in the race had to be in line.

Oh my, how exciting when the race was on!

We cheered for Hank as he rode Big Red, he was leaning right up close to Big Red’s ears. We could almost hear Hank tell Big Red, ‘Come on Buddy, we can do it, we’re winners.’

And sure enough, Hank and Big Red did win that race. Blondie the Big Sorrel won races too. My dad and Hank split the purse.

So many wonderful happy memories of those times.

From Page 6 Now, finally, here in B.C., money raised from the sale of licenses is channeled appropriately into fish conservation instead of ending up in the general coffers of the government as was previously the case. It makes sense that anglers paying millions of dollars for license purchases want to see their money used for fish and fishing.

Enacting a law that earmarks licence revenue to the Fresh Water Fishery Society of BC is an important step to ensuring that fish and fish habitat conservation and the promotion of fishing as a wholesome recreational activity for the whole family is secured for many generations to come. I am hoping we will eventually see similar laws enacted in the hunting sector of outdoor activities for not just BC but for all of Canada as well.

Jack said. “He’s starting in the same car that I started in.�

His old car was a bit of a fixer-upper, requiring a motor and transmission, which the Maunu’s built together this past spring.

The reincarnated racer was the original Dirty Mudder, but is now appropriately known as “Son of a Mudder.�

Jesse’s inspiration to start racing came from years of watching his dad race.

Jesse was able to get a little bit of driving time in the Son of a Mudder before this year’s race, but Saturday was his first time in the mud. “It was nerve-racking at first, but it’s not as hard as it looks. It’s pretty fun, actually,� he told the Herald after his first pass.

His father expressed pride of his son. Â Â Jesse plans to be back behind the wheel next year.

MUD BOGGING: A FAMILY TRADITION Over the weekend, some sports fans were indoors watching future hockey stars like Connor McDavid get drafted into the NHL. Mud racer Lee Briand couldn’t tell you who that is, although the Nova Scotian could probably still pick Sideny Crosby out of a crowd.

Briand was busy watching a talented young mud racer that weekend — his 17-year-old son Austin Briand, who began racing when he was 14.

Austin has won three North West Mud Racing Association championships, and he’s only been racing for about four years now. “I’ve blown through competition like it’s nothing,� Austin said, frankly. “A lot of these adults here haven’t even won three championships, let alone at 17,� Lee said of his son.

The Briand’s live in 100 Mile House and Austin, a secondgeneration mud racer, grew up around the sport. “We have pictures of him, twoyears-old, working on the trucks,�

Lee said.

Starting in A Class — the only class he was allowed to race in as a 14-year-old — Austin got a feel for racing.

The first time he ever raced, Austin was scared.

Then came the adrenaline rush. “You went so fast, you got your heart beating out of your chest,

and you keep wanting more,�

Austin said. “You go so fast in so little time.

It’s a great feeling.�

At age 15, he was making 3.5 second runs through 200-feet of mud without nitrous.

Austin’s current, and new, 2,800 horsepower pro-cut class racer, dubbed Insanity, made it’s maiden run at the Merritt races in just 2.8 seconds.

His fastest time is 2.7 seconds.

Austin’s passion for racing, like Jesse’s, stems from watching his dad race. “I just really wanted to do that, and when he got a blower truck, I was like oh my God, I want to do that. I want to go fast,� he said.

Austin put in a lot of hard work and dedication to racing, even leaving school early sometimes to work on his vehicles. “It’s like my ultimate hobby,� he said noting he wants to be a mechanic for a living.

Lee would have raced with his son as well, but his transmission pumped failed, leaving the elder Briand on the sidelines.

In classic dad fashion, Lee admitted he was nervous leading up to his son’s first race. “I’m just trying not to show it, because this is a very big motor,�

Lee said.

After a very successful run in Insanity, Austin said his pass was a good adrenaline rush. “It was pretty friggen insane,� he said.

Donna Chorney, taking the time to give back Donna Chorney has been a volunteer with the Nicola Valley Health Care Auxiliary for over ten years.

She was encouraged to get involved by her sister, longtime volunteer, Myrna Jones.

Her daughter, Debbie, also volunteers with the Auxiliary at the thrift shop.

Currently, Donna is one of the thrift shop’s conveners, a role that she has filled for three years.

While volunteering at the thrift shop, one of her favourite areas is arranging the table clothes and linens.

Prior to her involvement with the auxiliary, Donna was a long-term care aid.

Volunteering has allowed Donna to continue working with members of the community, as well as continuing to support health care.

She enjoys her time volunteering and appreciates the team spirit that the members have.

They are drawn to her caring and giving nature and she is a very valued member of the auxiliary.

VICTORIA – Candidates for a council seat in a small community should be able to spend no more than $10,000 to run for mayor and $5,000 for a council or school board seat, says a legislature committee on local election financing.

For larger communities, a population-based formula would limit a mayoral campaign for a city of 150,000 residents to just under $90,000, with other municipal candidates limited to half that.

The formula would limit a candidate for mayor of Victoria, population 80,000, to about $50,000, while Surrey’s population of 470,000 would mean a cap of $180,000 to run for mayor.

limits apply to communities up to 10,000 residents. For larger ones, mayoral candidates would be limited to $1 per capita for the first 15,000 people, 55 cents per capita up to 150,000, 60 cents per capita for 150,000 to 200,000 and only 15 cents for communities larger than that.

Fraser-Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart, who chaired the committee as it toured the province, said the limits are aimed to make running for local government “accessible and affordable,” while recognizing the vast difference between political campaigns in large cities and those in small com-

munities.

The spending limits still have to be endorsed by the legislature, but the B.C. Liberal and NDP members of the committee endorsed them unanimously.

They are part of a series of local election reforms that included extending terms to four years.

The committee wants third-party advertisers limited to five per cent of what a mayoral candidate is allowed to spend. The spending limits would be in effect starting on Jan. 1 of each election year.

B.C. is joining Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador in placing spending limits on at least some of their local elections.

Contact me and even relieve, arthritis pain and other symptoms, such as stiffness and swelling.

There are several reasons to exercise when you have knee arthritis.

Some of the more important ones are: exercise maintains the knee joint’s full range of motion; exercise strengthens the muscles that support the knee joint, and strong leg muscles help the joint absorb shock as you walk.

Exercise doesn’t have to be hard to be beneficial.

In fact, gentle, lowimpact exercises are best for knee arthritis.

They minimize stress on the joint even as they increase its flexibility and strength.

When you have OA in your knee, mild discomfort during exercise is considered normal.

In fact, so is being a little bit sore the day after exercise.

However, if you experience severe pain, swelling, or stiffness, stop exercising the affected joint and see your doctor right away.

According to the Center for Disease Control, people with knee arthritis should do moderate exercise

for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week.

You can even break it down into three 10-minute sessions each day.

Either works just as well.

You should experience better mobility and less pain within four to six weeks.

Walking is an excellent form of exercise.

It’s low-impact, and because it’s a weightbearing exercise, it helps strengthen the muscles and build bone.

Wear good, sturdy shoes.

Start out slow, and gradually increase your pace and distance for best results.

Water exercise, or walking in the shallow end of a pool, are also superb for muscle strength and knee flexibility.

Because the body is buoyant in water, it lessens impact to near zero as it makes you work a little harder to

move.

Look for water exercise classes at our local Aquatic Center.

Within my office at 2076 Granite Avenue, we now how a rehabilitation gym.

In regards to knee arthritis, I can now examine a patient, confirm the diagnosis of knee OA, set up an appropriate exercise program, and have Kim Penner, a Kinesiologist, teach patients how to do the exercises correctly and safely.

We presently do this for back pain, shoulder pain, ankle pain, and hip pain as well.

Although it is good to have your medical doctor know that you are going to participate in our program, you do not need a referral to enter into the program.

31st Nicola Valley Dog Show survives the heat Locally-bred Kosmo (Ch. Windacre Cause and Effect) wins Best Puppy in Show; leads the country in points Ian Webster THE MERRITT HERALD

Soaring temperatures on the weekend failed to supress the energy and enthusiasm of over 200 entrants at the 31st edition of the Nicola Valley Kennel Club’s dog show at Voght Park.

The three-day event actually consisted of four separate shows — one on Saturday, one on Sunday and two on Monday.

“I don’t think the heat was too much of a factor,” said one of the show’s organizers, Linda Carmichael. “Most of the people came wellprepared with air conditioning, tents and water sprayers. The dogs are the priority.”

Carmichael went on to say that the show’s schedule was tweaked a bit as a result of the hot weather.

“We moved the start time up almost an hour each morning, and went right through the lunch break. On Saturday and Sunday, we were finished by 1 to 1:30 p.m.”

By the time Monday’s doubleheader rolled around, some intermittent cloud cover and occasional breezes brought welcome relief to the participants.

The four local entries in this year’s competition did extremely well.

Leading the way was Carmichael’s 10-monthold West Highland terrier Kosmo (Ch. Windacre Cause and Effect). The wee Westie won All Breeds Best Puppy in Show three out of the four times on the weekend.

Kosmo is the leading puppy in the country right now with no fewer than 16 all breeds wins this year, and 29 victories in his Group 4 category.

He has accumulated 1,090 points, almost double the next nearest puppy.

dogs recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club.

Group 4 is all terriers — from the large Airdales down to the small Westies.

Carmichael was able to show Kosmo herself on Monday and pick up one of his three weekend wins. The other two came with professional dog handler David Gignac from the Lower Mainland on the leash.

Kosmo’s time as a puppy is coming to an end, as the youngster will age-out at 12 months.

Carmichael plans to give her star performer a well-deserved rest.

“He probably won’t show at all next year as a two-year-old,” she said.

“He’ll be given some time to mature and fill

out, and maybe make some babies. Most adult dogs don’t show until they’re three.”

Carmichael will continue to be busy at her Windacre West Highland breeding facility.

“I have several upand-coming dogs,” she said. “One (Ch. Winacre Ready to Rumble) has just returned from England. He is the first Canadian Westie to get an English championship. It’s very difficult over there. There might be 80 to 90 Westies at every show, and they only give out two challenge certificates — one male and one female.”

In the Group 1 class for sporting dogs, Merritt’s Elaine Gill did extremely well with

her three-year-old black Labrador retriever Allie

(GCh. Graegill’s Always in Trouble). Despite being away from the show circuit for the last year and a half, Allie picked up three points for a Best in Breed group placement on Saturday and earned her CKC Grand Champion title in the process.

Gill explained that dogs first earn their Champion status by acquiring 10 points in shows during their career, and the Grand Champion title by going on to achieve another 20 points — no easy feat.

Allie had a tremendous start to her career before going into temporary retirement — acquiring her Champion

title in less than a year, and 19 of the necessary Grand Champion points in her first 18 months.

Fellow Merrittonian Lori Jacobson showed two dogs on the weekend — both bull terriers.

Her “big guy” is twoand-a half-year-old Cash (Rootn Lozoe Hit the Jackpot). Anybody familiar with the heart-warming literary and film classic Incredible Journey is instantly reminded of the irrepressible terrier Bodger.

Cash picked up a fourth in group placing on Monday in a very competitive terrier division.

Jacobson’s second dog is a recently-acquired,

beautiful, young miniature bull terrier by the name of Lola (Kingsmere’s Rootn Red Hot Riot). The bundle of energy and verve is just 15 weeks old, and showed for the first time this weekend.

Rounding out the field of local entries was Andrea Barnes and her Rhodesian Ridgeback Rocket (TopoftheRock’s A Friend in Me) in Group 2 — Hounds.

Rocket picked up a third in group on Saturday, a second on Sunday and a fourth on Monday.

Entries for this year’s Nicola Valley Dog Show came from throughout B.C., as well as Alberta and Washington State.

Otters host annual swim invitational this weekend

Over 300 swimmers representing more than a dozen Interior and Lower Mainland clubs are expected to descend upon the Nicola Valley this weekend for the annual Merritt Otters Invitational Swim Meet.

Action runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with preliminaries in the morning each day and finals in the afternoon.

The Otters, who are coached

by Leroy Slanzi, will be out in force at their home meet with close to 30 entrants.

Merritt swimmers have been busy the past two weekends, attending meets in Lumby June 20 to 21 and Kelowna June 27 to 28.

In Lumby, every one of the 10

Merritt swimmers in attendance achieved one or more personal best times.

Leading the way were Sarah and Abbi Thoms with three PBs each. Another highlight was Jensen Cavaliere’s second-place finish in the Div. 5 girls’ 100metre backstroke event.

The Kelowna meet was the first on the summer schedule to have heats followed by finals. The top eight swimmers in each event made the A final, while finishers nine through 16 qualified for the B final.

Over 380 swimmers competed at the Kelowna meet, with many coming from Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island clubs.

The Merritt Otters had 15 swimmers at the Kelowna competition. Between them, they

achieved 25 top-eight finishes, and eight top-three placings.

Winner of a gold medal was six-year-old Evi Slanzi in the boys’ 25-metre butterfly event.

Silver-medal winners were Isaac Asselstine (50-metre freestyle) and Bianca Cavaliere (50metre freestyle and 50-metre butterfly), while bronze medals went to Asselstine (50-metre butterfly), Jensen Cavaliere (50-metre butterfly) and Rahul Chhabra (50-metre butterfly and 100-metre freestyle).

Bianca Cavaliere’s secondplace finish in the 50-metre butterfly was a new club record.

“We set a goal last year of seeing the Otters’ logo mixed in with the stronger clubs when it came down to the finals of events,” head coach Slanzi said. “We’re achieving that goal.”

Responsibilities: • Oversee the daily operations of the Merritt Victim Services Program including: ensuring policy, procedure and protocols are followed as well as case management and coordination. • Provide crisis intervention services to crime and trauma victims & witnesses: Provision of case speciďƒžc police and court information, assistance with next of kin notiďƒžcations, emotional support, practical assistance, court orientation and accompaniment, referrals to community resources including assistance with forms. • Recruitment, training, coordination, supervision and evaluation of staff and volunteers. • Provide education to community groups and individuals on victim services, criminal victimization and crime prevention; • Liaise and maintain a positive working relationship with the RCMP, Crown Counsel, and other community agencies. • Perform administrative duties including: monthly & annual statistical reports, accurate record keeping, case ďƒžle maintenance and data entry. • Coordinate and participate in ICAT (Integrated Case Assessment Team dealing with high risk domestic violence cases) meetings as required.
