The Meridian Arts Commission (MAC) is dedicated to their motto: “to advance and nurture all facets of the arts to enhance the quality of life for Meridian residents and its visitors.” If you’ve looked around town lately, they are doing a fantastic job. Art is popping up everywhere – and is truly enhancing the day-today experience in Meridian, Idaho. Thankfully, that shows no signs of slowing down.

M E R I D I AN

The MAC meets monthly to discuss arts and cultural policy around town, and also “promotes public awareness and participation in the arts.” This couldn’t have come around at a better time—the world truly needs art. It keeps us present; it keeps us mindful. If you’re interested in catching up with the MAC, visit meridiancity.org/mac to review their meetings, agendas, and upcoming events.

DIVINE WINE CORK AND FORK M O R E T H AN Y O UR AVE R AG E W IN E BAR B Y R E B E C C A E V A N S PH O T O G R A PH Y E M M A T H O M P S O N

The diversity in clientele creates a major part of the atmosphere; high-end diners, wine-tasters, bikers, sports fans, singles, couples, retirees, CEOs, young,

and old. Divine’s owner, Doug Evans, greets most everyone upon arrival, and the wait-staff treats customers like royalty. The interaction, customers becoming friends, exchanging “hellos,” makes this upscaled-Cheers the place to return.

Johnny Kunk, who specializes in Delta Blues is one popular musician, as is Tom Taylor peeling his reinvention of 80’s and 90’s rock. Amara, who carries soothing vocals, maintains a svelte background sound fo r diners.

On average, Doug, samples close to 70 wines per week, choosing the perfect vintage to compliment his extensive menu, which includes filet mignon, poke nachos, and more. Every Thursday, Divine’s floor opens bottles for wine tasting, offering opportunity to sam ple a $60 or $70 bottle while mingling with friends. Doug also owns his own label, but has opted out of the wine club business, “mainly, I love to share new food and wine and I never want a customer to feel stuck with a style or blend they wouldn’t have chosen for themselves,” he says.

“One thing I wanted when I went into this business over 16 years ago,” Doug says, “is for folks to have a place they could relax, forget their stressors, and have fun.”

Music at Divine pulses Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights with artists Doug handselects.

Between Divine’s food, wine, music, and more, there is pl enty of reason to toast, and plenty to celebrate.

He’s achieved all of that with Divine, including fun through his theme nights, such as The Kentucky Derby, Roaring 20’s, Speed Dating, New Year Eve Bashes, and other holiday events. He emphasis his hope that “joy should be a part of life, a part of the everyday.” “Every week should feel special, a reason to connect with others in the community,” Doug says.

A hidden staircase, near the latrine, weaves up and into a cigar room, much like an elegant DC bat cave for those who want a smoke, a drink, a meal, or a hideout. This room is where many of the “regulars” land as the night winds down at Divine Wine Cork and Fork.

You’d never suspect a wine bar, let alone, so much more, tucked into this 1920’s house along Main Street in Meridian, Idaho. It’s the so much more that grabs you. The main dining room rests near the bar as seating continuously unfolds, extending to a side dining room, and onto an outdoor patio that wraps three-fourths of the house. An oak tree, perhaps a hundred years old, ‘covers’ the patio as though Mother Nature opened an umbrella sprinkled with twinkling lights. On the other side of the bar, is a more intimate area for guests who prefer quieter conversation instead of live music.
