very manufacturer tries to develop seamless interfaces between product and user. Usually, it’s for convenience. Sometimes, as in aerospace and medical applications, it’s crucial for life and limb. One of the best at crafting seamless interfaces is Meridian-based PKG User Interface Solutions. PKG is one of Idaho’s best-kept secrets and has contributed to a staggering 240+ corporate partners globally. PKG has a great story, evolving from a hobby into a major contributor in design, development and manufacturing to many Fortune 500 companies. Born as the Promed Keyboard Group (hence PKG) under the visionary leadership of Homy Panahi in 1989, PKG has grown steadily ever since to become one of the go-to sources for very high reliability user interfaces in a variety of industries, most notably in medical and aerospace. PKG is moving the needle in many ways. I’d like to share the strength of its internal culture, embrace of open innovation and Industry 4.0, and how they are playing an increasing role to support smaller, newer Idaho technology businesses.

CULTURE: PKG wears its heart on its sleeve AND asks its employees to do the same! PKG’s mission statement is “Enriching the Lives of Those We Touch.” It starts with each employee having their own mission. Not your usual onboarding, PKG builds their culture inside-out. As CFO Cheryl Adams noted, “We do a day-long class called ‘Purpose and Passion’ that’s dedicated to helping our employees discover who they are and what kind of person they desire to be. The class facilitator walks participants through activities meant to reveal important themes, values, and principles in their lives then coaches them through writing a ‘Purpose and Passion Statement’ of their own that shows the part in the world they’re meant to play.” Those framed statements hang publicly by their desks. Corny? Maybe. Effective? Definitely.

The purpose and passion driven mentality comes across in their partnerships with other firms. Cheryl and CEO Almir Garibovic point to a guiding principle to “make our customers feel like a part of our family. Customers recognize PKG as having a culture based on an open-door policy, trust, and empowerment.” Lofty words, but well supported by PKG’s pervasive culture of positivity. Winning at INDUSTRY 4.0 and Open innovation Modern technology development has morphed into a world where the lines between customers, suppliers, even competitors blur. At the heart of Industry 4.0 is the powerful strategy of open innovation where innovation is shared across an ecosystem of partners. Few Idaho firms have embraced this like PKG. While most firms try to align their strategy and culture, PKG pulls it off, collaborating with innovative

leaders globally providing products used for patient imaging, diagnostics, treatment, and surgery as well airplane controls and communication devices. HELPING LOCAL FIRMS: Growing Idaho PKG’s vision is to build partnerships and to drive development in Idaho’s burgeoning startup community. PKG is determined to develop robust and life changing products through focused partnerships with inventors, investors, universities, and entrepreneurs. With the aim of bringing new technologies to the market and helping smaller local ventures, Almir says “Idaho needs to grow its own great companies and keep them here,” keeping with the Industry 4.0 model. It’s in PKG’s best interest to make that happen. It is also a blueprint for other Idaho innovators to join PKG in growing Idaho’s economy.

THE NEW STANDARD OF COOL C O R D O VA CO O L E R S B Y C HE L SE A C HA MB E R S PH O T O G R A PH Y E M M A T H O M P S O N

There is almost nothing worse than reaching into the cooler, expecting to grab a cold, refreshing drink, and realizing that all your ice has melted. What’s more, the ice has settled into a lukewarm pool of water that has completely engulfed all of your perishable foods. Now what? An inefficient cooler is the quickest way to transform what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend in the mountains into a trip to town for yet another bag of ice.

We recently caught up with Chase Mart, CEO of Cordova Coolers, and learned of the incredible partnerships that have launched the Cordova brand into the Midwest. Venturing into states like Minnesota, Montana, Arizona, and more, Cordova is becoming more and more of a household name. And they are truly setting a standard for what a cooler should be: reliable. “As a company, our goal is to manufacture the highest quality, most high-end cooler in the world,” Mart said. “But more than just our global goals, we understand the importance of giving back to our local community. Along with being entirely American-made, we offer fair wages for a fair days’ work to our employees.” Mart and the C ordova Cooler crew have created a company in which all the employees are on

the same track: a shared vision for quality, reliable products. And because of this, they’ve been able to expand their reach across the country and increase their online sales presence as well. With such a strong moral background, it’s no wonder that their products are as welldesigned as they are. In the last year, Cordova Coolers has focused on significant product updates to ensure that they are performing up to the Cordova standard. And customers love it! “We are now offering custom wrapped coolers,” Chase explains. The company can take virtually any image and create a custommade wrap for the cooler. Not to mentio n, the high-quality C-deck materials that the products are made out of are designed to be both water and heat resistant. But beyond setting the standard for quality and reliability, Cordova Coolers are also designed not to absorb contaminants. So, you can cut and prepared your fish right on the cooler, then simply rinse it

off, without having to worry about contamination seeping into your cooler. Cordova is also offering a new line of high-end, fair-priced drinkware, including cups, bottles, and tumblers. The drinkware can also be custom-etched to s uit your needs. Working closely with both individual customers and companies, Cordova Cooler s has been able to continue to grow and expand their product line, offering more and more of what the public wants for their recreation needs. Cordova Coolers can be found online at cordovaoutdoors.com and at various retailers such as D&B Supply, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Albertson’s Marketplace, North 40, and more. When you’re on an adventure, you need something reliable. Don’t settle for subpar. -

Properly used and stored, one of the larger Cordova Coolers can keep your ice fresh for up to nine days! Never again will you have to suffer through a soggy sandwich or a warm soda.

But what if your ice lasted three days? Five days? How about eight days?
