Whether you are a graduate of Mother of Mercy, McAuley or Mercy McAuley, you have received a Mercy education. How do you define your Mercy education? Is it the faculty you had, the friends you made, the courses you took, the accomplishments you experienced on the field or court, maybe at the theater productions or concerts in which you performed, the study hall, lunch time or senior prank shenanigans you participated in, the uniform, sweatshirt, or sweater you wore, the Sister(s) of Mercy you had the pleasure of getting to know? While we all received a Mercy education, what that Mercy education “looked like” has varied from decade to decade. Yet there were similarities in the characteristics of that education.
In recent years, Mercy schools have been more intentional in identifying the core values of a Mercy education. Some of you may know these five core values to be Faith, Compassion, Service, Leadership, and Excellence. In July 2021, Mercy McAuley became a member of Mercy Education, an organization which serves 55 schools in six countries and one territory. Mercy Education has updated the five core values of every Mercy educated student as follows: Compelled By Mercy, Educational Courage, Inspired By Faith, Principled Leadership, and A Voice For Dignity and Respect.
These core values are now intentionally emphasized at Mercy McAuley. Did your Mercy Education instill these characteristics in you and your classmates? This issue of The Clover will highlight a few alumnae that embody the core values of their Mercy Education.
Mercy McAuley High School is a Catholic college-preparatory high school for young women sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. It is committed to excellence in education, compassionate service and leadership in a Christ-centered community.

These are the ideals we stand up for and strive to live up to. We hold ourselves to these standards as an institution, as a community and as individuals.

“In more ways than we could ever imagine, our education has been made infinitely better by the inclusion of that one word: Mercy.” ALYSSA ROSE, ‘22
“In more ways than we could ever imagine, our education has been made infinitely better by the inclusion of that one word: Mercy. A Mercy education means a lot. It means never forgetting the significance of September 24—and for everyone that just thought to themselves “Wait what day is that again?” — It’s Mercy Day. It means leading the pack, even when you have to make it up as you go. It means singing the Our Father. It means fighting for what we believe in, like wearing sweatpants under our skirts and painting our parking spots. It means donating Thanksgiving meals to the community each year and being asked how we feel at assemblies. It’s the look that teachers give you when you ask for an extension on an assignment. A Mercy education means that no matter where we go, and no matter what we do, we truly are Women of Mercy. We carry it with us. It is the sisterhood that we feel when we sway to our Alma Mater, and it’s the sisterhood that I see now, as I look out at all of you.”

Thank you to the almost 40 speakers who participated in Career Day! We were excited to welcome many alumnae to the building both in person and virtually as they spoke with current students about their various careers! This group of incredible female presenters came to us from diverse fields. Students heard from health care providers, educators, nonprofit professionals, engineers, chemists and biologists, marketing professionals, lawyers, veterinarians and more! We love it when our students meet and learn from other members of the Circle of Mercy!
We had a record-breaking BIG Day of Giving in 2022! We are consistently reminded just how incredible our alumnae, parents, grandparents, employees, board members, and friends are! We surpassed our goal by raising over $174,000, which includes our matching gifts. We are so thankful for all who participated with a gift or prayers. This incredible amount of support is unparalleled and has a tremendous impact on our students’ Mercy education. THANK YOU!

Guests enjoyed a silent auction, basket raffles, fun games, the Mission Moment and more! The coffee bar is open for students and staff Monday –Friday through the lunch bell!
Special thanks to these “Golden Guild” alumnae, who graduated from McAuley or Mother of Mercy at least 50 years ago! They hosted a wonderful breakfast for our seniors welcoming them as alumnae! Our Class of 2022 enjoyed talking with these ladies about their high school days. They learned that while many things have changed, the values of a Catholic, all-girls, Mercy education remain the same.
Currently Emma is working as a Catholic missionary at Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville, with an organization called Fellowship of Catholic University Students, also known as FOCUS. In this role she is pursuing her passion of connecting college students with opportunities to encounter the Lord’s love and mercy. “We are all beloved daughters and sons of God, and He desires to be in a personal relationship with each one of us,” Emma shared. While on this mission, she is inviting students into a relationship with the Lord through Bible study, retreats, and mission trips. She credits her time at McAuley for impacting her life today. “Even if I did not know it at the time, I learned that we are all called to give of ourselves. This means many different things depending on your life stage and the talents the Lord has given you, but He invites us to serve one another in big and most importantly, small ways,” Emma said.
Maria is active in her community as a certified tourism ambassador and volunteer board member for several regional non-profits that she’s passionate about. Being a senior editor of the Yearbook helped advance her love of photography, which contributed to publications and marketing opportunities as an adult. Her experience on the basketball team helped refine teamwork and communication skills. Maria shared, “The culture of excellence modeled by this Mercy value has led to proud moments of being part of the Cincinnati Business Courier Forty Under 40 Class of 2021 and accepting the 2017 Circle of Mercy Alumna Award.” Maria lives out the Mercy values as she continues to stay curious and push herself outside of her comfort zone when pursuing educational opportunities that help her grow.
compassion, empathy, & responsibility to serve
Emily is a senior at Mount St. Joseph University and will graduate with a degree in Early Childhood Education (preK-5) and Special Education (mild-moderate and moderate-intense). In her role as Mission Integration Co-op student, she has the opportunity to collaborate with many different people and navigate complex ethical situations. Emily shared, “this role has truly taught me that living a life modeling Jesus Christ does not have office hours. Just like Catherine McAuley, we have to answer when He calls and do what is right regardless of what others may think.” Emily was a member of the first graduating class of Mercy McAuley High School. She reflected on that year, “We adapted, we came together to try and make it work for everyone. We came together as friends and comrades in making our senior year all that we had hoped it would be. It was a lesson in finding the good in every situation.” Emily is excited to become a teacher, guided by the legacy of Catherine McAuley, and looks forward to helping her students find their voice in the classroom.
As a Spanish lecturer at the University of Michigan, Stephanie has been able to live out her dream of being an eternal student. She finds herself learning from her students every day, often in unexpected ways. As she taught a newly designed course, she said, “my students taught me more that semester about resilience, language learning, and staying culturally curious than I had ever been taught before.” Stephanie credits the teachers she had at Mother of Mercy with inspiring her to bring her whole self to all that she does. She explains that her teachers “believed in me, encouraged me to amplify my voice, and nurtured my natural skills as well as God-given abilities while pushing me to explore areas in my life that challenged me.” This is exactly what Stephanie is now giving to her students.
lifelong learning, emotional intelligence
Jody was inspired to start a Performing Arts Company in her retirement community. Residents of all ages are performing on stage or working behind the scenes on various productions! “We have a blast entertaining the other 500 residents here with our singing, dancing, acting in skits and comedy nights. Our shows always pack a full house,” shared Jody. “The comraderie keeps our spirits young; the challenge affirms we are still capable, and the smiles, laughs and cheers from the audience assure us we are engaged in worthwhile activity.” Jody is living the Mercy values to the fullest!
The stained-glass piece that welcomes all guests when they arrive at Mercy McAuley.
For many alumnae of our legacy schools, just the mention of “McAuley High School” or “Mother of Mercy High School” calls up immediate vivid mental images. Very often, one of those mental images is that of the iconic stainedglass windows that were central at each school. Now both beautiful works of art happily co-exist at Mercy McAuley High School.
The stained-glass windows at Mother of Mercy rose an astonishing 15 feet on the marble landing of the original 1925 school building. They were designed by Beau Verre/Riordan studios in Middletown, Ohio—the same company which carefully removed them from the Werk Road property, polished and restored them, and created a beautiful back-lit enclosure in the main lobby of Mercy McAuley High School. The old world style glass is stained, where the color goes all the way through the glass, with painted details that are fired into the glass. It is a triptych showing the central figure of Mary, our Mother of Mercy, with baby Jesus, flanked by Saint Philomena and Saint Cecelia, who are both considered patron saints of young women. On the other side of the new enclosure, other elements of the vintage glass were used, along with replicas of some of

the pieces of the McAuley stainedglass window, effectively blending the two works of art together. McAuley’s stained-glass window depicts “Christ the Teacher,” in mid-century modern style, and rises majestically for a full story over the main entrance of the building. The window forms an entire wall in the 2nd floor chapel, and its colors glow in the afternoon sun. Sr. Virginia Ann Froehle, RSM ’53, recently shared some history behind these windows. “When the Sisters of Mercy approved the architectural plans for a new high school (in the late 1950s), they asked a group of benefactors called the Mercy League to finance the stunning window in the design. My mother, Virginia Schaefer Froehle, was president of the Mercy League at the time, and led the fundraising effort with many card parties, raffles, and even bake sales all around the city. The image of Christ the Teacher is an embodiment of the foundation of a Catholic high school.”
The installation of the stained glass at Mercy McAuley High School was of the utmost importance, recognizing and honoring history and tradition while blending them together to create a new work of art that is truly symbolic of the mission of our school today. We hope our students can feel the spirit of Mercy, so central to a Mercy education, represented by these two beautiful works of art.
The benevolent gaze of our Mother of Mercy greets anyone who comes in the main entrance, while the figure of Christ the Teacher rises above.
