ashington – U.S. Rep. David G. Valadao (CA-21) recently announced the winners of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for the 21st Congressional District. The following is a list of this year’s winners: • First Place: Alyssa Garza from South High School • Second Place: Racquelle Justo from Hanford West High School • Third Place: Alyy Howell from Sanger High School Valadao made the announcement at a congressional art competition reception held in his Hanford office. The winning artist’s work will be displayed for one year in the national exhibition located in the Cannon Tunnel, a pedestrian walkway leading to the U.S. Capitol. “I am excited to host the competition reception for the 21st Congressional District for the third time. We are pleased to share the artistic abili-
ties of the Central Valley with the rest of the nation,” Valadao said in a statement.“With millions of visitors at the Capitol each year, Ms. Alyssa Garza’s wonderful art will have quite the audience as she so deserves.” The Congressional Art Competition was created in 1982, and hundreds of thousands of high school students throughout the country have participated throughout the years. One winner is chosen from each participating congressional district and also receives a round-trip ticket to Washington, D.C., to see their artwork on display. The second place winner will have her artwork displayed in Valadao’s Washington office and the third place winner will have her artwork displayed in his Hanford office. Rep. David G. Valadao represents the 21st Congressional District of California, which includes Kings County and portions of Fresno, Tulare and Kern counties.

In addition, KCR was a finalist for the Abraham and Borst award for Best College Radio Station Overall. Daisy Santana, a journalism major from Bakersfield, was a part of the KCR team for the 2014-15 year. About KCR SDSU's student-run radio station broadcasts live online for the SDSU and greater San Diego community. All shows are hosted by current SDSU students and occasionally alumni. The station covers music, news and sports. KCR has been in continuous operation since 1969. The station broadcasts live on local digital cable channels, online and on the TuneIn radio app.

ver 50 brave men donned a variety of high-heeled (and surprisingly fashionable) pumps and gathered at the Outlets at Tejon on a recent Saturday morning to draw attention to the importance of ending violence against women and children at the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes� event. Benefiting the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault of Kern County and the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita, the participants proudly strutted their stuff and gave it their all as they walked a course around the Outlets at Tejon in support of their community and this vital cause.
