Bakersfield Girl Scout spreads love of literacy BY JORDAN KING Community contributor

irl Scout Ashley T. is working to share the love of reading throughout Kern County, while at the same time working toward her Gold Award. Ashley, from Troop 321 in Bakersfield, recently held a book drive in Bakersfield. The books she collected will go toward supporting the creation of a new reading room at The Mission at Kern County. “My intended audience is children who may not have this opportunity anywhere else,” Ashley said. “I would also like to see parents sit down with their child and read a book; it is a good bonding experience, and I would like to see parent-child relationships strengthened. Books are priceless and they need to be shared. These kids deserve a chance to enjoy them. I want to create the reading room for these kids and hope to instill the joy of reading in their hearts.” The Mission is located at 816 E. 21st St. The hope for this new room is that
it will encourage parents and children to read together. “I hope to be able to set up a system where the volunteers read to the visiting children on family day,” Ashley said. MARE in need of more volunteers COURTESY OF MARE ARE is a nonprofit organization that serves approximately 50 riders each week and has 14 horses that require daily care. This can be difficult to manage with a small staff. Therefore, many of the daily needs for our riders’ lessons and horse care are provided by a committed group of volunteers who donate time to sidewalk, lead horses, clean stalls and complete maintenance tasks. You do not need to have horse experience; we will train you. The importance of the dedicated volunteers to the staff, riders and horses can never

be overstated. Our next volunteer orientation is Saturday, June 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. MARE welcomes those who are interested in donating their time and expertise on a consistent basis. We understand that your life is busy and that it can be difficult to give time on a consistent basis, but that is precisely what MARE needs. d Ruth, of Bakersfield, has been selected as Sigma Corporation of America’s first #SigmaSuperFan contest winner. Now retired, Ruth has published ebooks on building a custom home computer designed to work with today’s high-resolution cameras. He teaches a monthly “Introduction to Digital Photography” workshop at his local camera store, Henley’s Photo, in Bakersfield. The course provides photographers with all the information they need to reach beyond “auto” mode into the realm of creative photography. A longtime photographer, Ruth recently became a loyal Sigma user, after purchasing the 10-20mm F/4-5.6 EX about two years ago. He’s since added several Sigma lenses to his kit, including the 50mm F/1.4 Art and the 18-35mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art. Ruth regularly takes his camera and lens backpacking, despite the extra weight, because he says he enjoys the quality of images his camera produces. I would like to nominate Kevin Varga for the “Voice’s Educator of the Month.” Mr. Varga is a very nice teacher who loves his students so much. He is a TK and kindergarten teacher at Seibert Elementary School. He teaches students who have special needs, like those with Autism. My son is in his class and I can tell you that my son can now read and write — and he will be transferred to the regular class this coming school year as a regular first-grader. Mr. Varga has helped my son and other kids to be successful. I can see his passion in teaching especially with special needs children. Mr. Varga is so patient in dealing with his students every day, which can be a challenge since his students have different
