Convention Chair Message It is my honor to welcome all the delegates and guests to the 36th annual American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. For decades, AAPI has served as a forum to facilitate and enable Indian American physicians to excel in patient care, teaching, and research and to pursue their aspirations in professional and community affairs. The convention team has worked incredibly hard to provide a delightful 4 days of events packed with educational CME credits, world-class entertainment, leadership seminars, networking opportunities, exhibits, and more. This meeting offers a rich educational program featuring the latest scientific research and advances in clinical practice. In addition, physicians and healthcare professionals from across the country will convene to develop health policy agendas and encourage legislative priorities for the upcoming year. Guests will be treated to true Midwestern hospitality in one of the country’s fastest growing cities—bustling with restaurants, night life, shopping and more. We look forward to welcoming you and your family and thank you for your support in making this convention a great success. Sincerely, John Johnson, MD, MBA National Convention Chair

Souvenir Chair From The Desk of the Souvenir Chair The 36th AAPI Annual Convention is here and I welcome you all to the Amazing city of Columbus Ohio, where this convention is being held for the first time.

 Nikesh Batra MD

AAPI is an organization with a unique blend of professional, social and compassionate goals all rolled into one to provide a platform for the equally unique needs of the ethnic physician diaspora of physicians of Indian origin within the United States. It exists to give voice to one of the most highly skilled workforce of this country on the one hand irrespective of their specialty; on the other hand it easily showcases the ethnic and social treasures of Indian heritage, right here in our beloved United States. Throw in the ever-present desire to give back to this land and their country of origin, to share their own success, to showcase that anything is possible, and you have a whole package called AAPI. The US, at this time, is in the midst of a severe epidemic of Opioid Addiction. To bring the epidemic to an end, we must prevent new cases of opioid addiction, and we must ensure access to treatment for people already addicted. AAPI has taken the lead and has a three-hour summit focusing on the crisis with the President of AAPI making a Pledge to support lawmakers and the public in the fight against Opioid Addiction. AAPI will continue to work towards bringing Physicians from all over the nation together in this Educational symposium with cultural connotations, along with evening entertainment programs, and, what better way to do this than to host a Convention. Columbus is proud to host the convention and we thank all the members of the convention team and the AAPI leadership in getting this together. Hopefully your visit to the convention will be fulfilling and productive. With you, Nikesh Batra MD

Souvenir Vice Chair Message As a member of the team this year, it is my honour to welcome all of you to the 36th Annual AAPI Convention being hosted in the city of Columbus and the great state of Ohio. It has been my privilege to serve AAPI and I am extremely grateful for the guidance and trust are given to me by AAPI President, Dr Gautam Samadder and the Executive Committee. As you all know, AAPI is one of the largest ethnic professional organizations in North America, representing eminent physicians of their Indian Heritage. To be successful and to flourish as a vibrant and productive organization, it is of utmost importance to create strong relationships with other organizations who share our vision and encourage young physicians to contribute and get involved.

Sandhya Agochiya, MD

As we know, it takes an immense team effort to make any event successful and for the past year, this convention team along with all its committee members have put in an enormous effort to make this rewarding and memorable. I am also very thankful to my husband Nitin Agochiya and my son Gaurav for their understanding, love and support to let me dedicate my time to serving this organization. I wish you the best and hope you have a great time! Best Regards,

President Elect Naresh Parikh MD I am both humbled and honored by this tremendous opportunity before me to lead an organization that I have held so dear for so many years. I hope to inspire and guide AAPI down a path of continued success by delivering back to its membership all the rewards of engagement in such a noble endeavor as exists at The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. I have great pride in AAPI and have confidence that all will see the beacon of light that shines outward from within. They say that an organization is only as strong as its membership provides. I’ve witnessed the ebbs and flows of membership as we have experimented over the years with different campaigns to attract and retain active members. We will establish a program to quickly re-engage our dormant membership and encourage senior members to stay active. There is great value in senior physicians who may no longer be practicing, but can provide guidance, inspiration and leadership to the less active members of the general body of the organization. It’s crucial that we work to provide concrete membership benefits that are attractive to potential members who are the future of AAPI. Discounts on Malpractice Coverage, Life Insurance, Disability, Car purchase and lease programs with popular brands like BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Tesla. Benefits attract and maintain solid membership. AAPI’s work overseas in India proudly continues by partnering with the Government of India through honorable Prime Minister Mr. Modi on a strong, concentrated initiative to rid the Country of Tuberculosis by 2025. To enable this AAPI under strategic advisement Mr. Anwar Feroz orchestrated the MOU with USAID towards elimination of TB. Operationally the Sevak Project led by volunteers in Gujarat under supervision of Dr. Thakor Patel will work in concert with the Ceti Program (Dr. Manoj Jain) conducting outreach to identify patients with TB in rural India. With great pride Dr. Asha Parikh and Dr. Naresh Parikh announce the TARA/AAPI free Charitable Clinic in Panvel, Mumbai India which is a wonderful collaboration with AAPI and YMC (Yusuf Meherally Center). Dr Ravi Jahagirdar is Chairman of GHS Mumbai along with Dr. Vinod Shah, Dr Ajay Lodha, Dr Raj Bhayani, Dr Surinder Purohit and Mr Anwar Feroz. There are several supporters listed on our www.aapisummit.org website. • December 28 to 30th 2018 - Global Health Summit will focus on NCD’s, the signature CEO forum will be conducted by Mr Anwar Feroz. • Pilot Project – TB Free India results will be presented. • International Research Competition will be held at GS Medical College. • CPR and BLS training will be conducted for over 600 Mumbai Traffic Police. • Women’s leadership will continue its focus on empowerment and leadership development. Here in the United States we have bold goals which require immediate action. We have a Call to Action on the Opioid Epidemic. The North American Drug Awareness Ten City Tour is set to launch in Atlanta on July 14th, 2018 at The Atlanta World Congress Center. The National Opioid Awareness campaign for Indian Diaspora is an American Pain Association (APA) project to curtail this deadly epidemic that has taken more than 500,000 lives and over 55,000 last year alone. AAPI proudly collaborates with on Opioid awareness work done by Drs. Sanjay and Kavita Gupta. Georgia Clinic provides on Friday year around Free Medical Services for Atlanta population. The continued vision and leadership of past President of AAPI Dr. Vinod Shah has spearheaded charitable donations for Lymphoma and Leukemia research totaling at present of roughly $470,000. We are calling on all AAPI members to contribute generously to this cause. The funds raised by AAPI for Lymphoma and Leukemia Society will be matched by Dr. Vinod Shah. The Atherosclerosis Research and incidence in Southeast Asian population is under way to detect by coronary CT scan in Atlanta at the auspices of Georgia Clinic. Next year July 2019 convention will be held in the Heart of the City of Atlanta. Please stay tuned……!! I know I can count on the continued support from within as we strive forward and take these next steps together. Please join me on this quest for success.

BOT Chair Ashok Jain MD As our organization enters its 35th year, I am honored and excited to serve as the chairman of Board of Trustees. AAPI has faced many challenges and opportunities in the four decades since its inception. I look forward to the future and what we could accomplish. Presently, AAPI represents more than 80,000 physicians, fellows, residents, and medical students of Indian origin. With these attributes in mind, I would like to propose the creation of AAPI Leadership Academy under the YPS/MSRF section. We can work with American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) for the development of the curriculum for the program. This academy will prepare our young physicians, who are entering into practice setup, academic careers and research track for future leadership roles. I seek to engage and involve all millennial physicians for membership in AAPI and for future leadership roles. My observations have shown me that even at local level at MAPI, there is lack of interest and involvement of recent graduates from medical schools and physicians entering the practice and research arena. Ultimately, I am looking forward to working with all the members of the Board of Trustees, AAPI, President Dr. Gautam Samadder, members of the executive committee and governing body, taking this organization to the next level.
