MEMPHIS

For four decades, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis has worked hard to achieve its mission to help local families build or improve the places they call home. As the cost of living continues to rise, the need for affordable housing has become more pressing than ever before. Memphis Habitat acknowledges the need and is committing to expansion plans to meet this growing demand. These plans include a second ReStore location, additional of ce space, and ambitious service goals.
“Memphis Habitat’s impact and capacity have grown steadily over the past 40 years, but the need for affordable homeownership and senior home repairs has grown even faster,” said Dwayne Spencer, Memphis Habitat president and CEO. “Opening a second ReStore and expanding our team will position us to raise more funds and provide more affordable mortgages for rst-time homebuyers and more repairs for older homeowners.”
The ReStore is an ongoing fundraiser that sells new and gently used furniture, appliances, building supplies, and housewares to fund Habitat’s mission. The second ReStore will be located in Collierville and will provide an additional location for the community to shop, donate, and volunteer to support Habitat’s work throughout the entire Memphis area. Grand opening information for the additional store will be announced in the coming months.
To help meet its ve-year service goals, Memphis Habitat is expanding staff across the board, including mortgage services, Aging In Place repairs, construction, development, and expanding its of ce footprint. Memphis Habitat’s current of ces will undergo renovation to enhance its homebuyer education and client service space while some administrative departments will expand to space adjacent to the new ReStore.
At Memphis Habitat’s Women Build Luncheon, we aim to bring together individuals from all walks of life who share our enthusiasm for empowering women. The event is Wednesday, April 10, at The Great Hall and Conference Center in Germantown, TN. During the luncheon, you’ll hear from keynote speaker Tina Knowles, who will share her experiences as a businesswoman, fashion designer, and philanthropist. This is a great opportunity to network with like-minded women and support the work of Memphis Habitat.
You will also have an opportunity to sign up to volunteer at our Women Build on April 13 or 20. Volunteers will work in a collaborative atmosphere under the guidance of construction professionals and alongside other volunteers and future Habitat homebuyers. Join us to make an impact and empower women in our city.
Our team at Memphis Habitat was saddened to hear about the passing of Rosalynn Carter. She leveraged her time as First Lady to demonstrate what it means to be a servant leader, investing her effort and talents in creating change among causes close to her heart. We are grateful for her decades-long investment in Habitat for Humanity. In our of ce, we will remember her warm nature and the caring way she treated our homebuyers, volunteers and team during her time in Memphis throughout the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in 2016.
Memphis Habitat held a Homebuyer Celebration on November 11, 2023, which resonated with joy, hope, and a powerful sense of community. This special event honored new homebuyers who achieved their dreams of homeownership through affordable Habitat mortgages.
COO Lori Humber and community leaders delivered heartfelt speeches, underscoring the signi cance of affordable housing and its life-changing impact on individuals and families. The highlight of the celebration was when the keys to the new homes were presented to each of the families, and they could sign their mortgage documents. The homeowners accepted these keys with gratitude, marking the beginning of a new chapter lled with stability, security, and opportunity.
The Homebuyer Celebration served as a powerful reminder of the strength that emerges when communities come together to uplift one another. After the celebration, the attendees left with renewed determination and a sense of purpose, inspired to continue building a brighter future for all.
