I can't cook a Thanksgiving dinner. All I can make is cold cereal and may a be toast.

tin ina valentino

—Charlie Brown, "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" by Charles M. Schultz

Pressure Cooker. Holidays are a lot of pressure, I think. Of course, these occasions have gratify f ing moments but the people who are on kitchen duty (even if they enj n oy cooking fo f r fa f mily and f iends) are usually too busy and tired to notice. They’ve missed out on the toast to the chef, dinner fr compliments and opening gift f s because they prepping fo f r the next course or loading the dishwasher so some well-intended guest won’t screw it up. And all the cooking doesn’t include the demands of shopping, hauling groceries and ensuring that today’s expensive shopping list will result in a memorable meal. Not that I’ve ever would know. I’m a life f long kitchen olympics spectator. I wouldn’t have a clue if your turk r ey was fr f ee-ranged, pre-brined, braised, broiled, smoked, deep-fr f ied, or propped on a beer can. If you can save me a little white and dark r meat fo f r a sandwich, that would be great. Thanks. For the fi f rst time in public, I am confe f ssing that I tried to make a turk r ey once. How hard could it be? The fi f rst turk r ey was thawing in the basement until I fo f rgot about it, wasted it and had to bleach the concrete fl f oor. Intent on a second attempt, I gobbled up one of the last birds befo f re the holiday and struggled to remember all the things I’ve heard that work r ed and didn’t work r . This is an example of life f ’s little challenges where algebra doesn’t come in handy and a college degree is useless. I got a pan, some f il, some Stove To fo T p dressing and imagined taking a proud selfi f e with my golden brown new fr f iend. I had no idea that, like every dinner guest, the turk r ey needed a bath fi f rst. And the best selfi f e of all would’ve been my fa f ce when I realized that there was a plastic bag of stuff f —giblet guts—inside the bird. Mortifi f ed by how it looked (and that I almost cooked a plastic bag), I have Google to thank fo f r the totally unappetizing description of the contents of the gag bag. I could’ve gone the rest of my life f without knowing that giblets and gizzards have been a Thanksgiving staple, apparently documented at the second pilgrim fe f ast. Four hours later, I was left f with a mess and the brutal reminder that I never paid attention to my mom in the kitchen. Thankfu f lly, fo f r Italian-Americans, pasta takes precedence over poultry every time and at least I can boil water. In the movie, Charlie Brown and Snoopy put together a fe f ast of buttered toast, popcorn, pretzels, jelly beans and ice cream aft f er Peppermint Patty peer-pressured Charlie into a “fr f iendsgiving.” Rolled up into this animated classic is a pressure cooker of outrage, guilt, disappointment, anxiety and fi f nally the realization that it really doesn’t matter what’s on your plate but what’s in your heart. Yo Y u don’t have to like giblets, but there’s always something to be thankfu f l fo f r; you might think Charlie Brown’s dinner is laughable, but the moral is that he did his best, on short notice, to give thanks fo f r the company of his f iends. As Mark fr r Batterson explains: “If you have fo f od in the refr f igerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep—you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank or in your wallet, or spare change in a dish someplace—you rank among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. If you can read this book—you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all. So count your blessings and remind everyone else how blessed we all are.” Not sure of the accuracy of these percentages but the fa f ct remains that right now someone is hungrier, colder, lonelier, poorer and without a roof over their head as you read this. Every issue of Ne N ighbors provides local opportunities to support a fo f od pantry, donate to a worthy cause, fi f nd cheer at a fr f ee event so, whenever possible, do what you can. Happy Thanksgiving, neighbors.

Santa’s Helicopter to land in Winston Plaza Nov. v 18

For well over a decade, Winston Plaza, 9th and North Avenue in Melrose Park, has kicked off the holiday season with one of the area’s most exciting events: Santa’s arrival by helicopter.r This year will be no different as kids and adults will gather in the parking lot next to Cermak Fresh Market on Saturday, y November 18. looking up to the sky for a glimpse of Mr.r and Mrs. Claus. Fran Myles, founder of Sparkles Entertainment, coordinates the annual event, which starts at Noon and continues until 3 pm with a magic show, w face painting, crafts, balloon artists and, of course, pictures with Santa. “People just love Winston Plaza’s events, especially this one,” said Myles, who noted that some feedback has even been very emotional over the years. “One family, y devastated by a home fire, said that “being at Santa’s arrival was the only Christmas fun we could give our kids.” Myles and Winston Plaza’s parent company, y NewMark Merrill, take the neighborhood events personally. “I always tell my balloon artists and face painters to remember they have no idea of the impact they might be

Holiday Plumbing Tips for Kitchen and Bath Make k Sure the Disposal is Working.

No Leftovers Down The Drain.

Running hot water before putting food debris in the disposal is an easy and important step to take.

A garbage disposal isn’t a garbage can and can easily become clogged with bones and grease.

Prevent Toilet Clogs With a Trash Can

Cut Down on Shower Time.

Only toilet paper gets flushed. Keep a plunger in the bathroom just in case it’s needed.

Wait 10 minutes between showers to maintain hot water and give the pipes a chance to filter out hair.
