ASK FOR SAMMY ALFANO “THE NEIGHBORHOOD GUY”

Do not fo f rget to show hospitality to strangers, f r by so doing some people hav fo a e shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. —Hebrews 13:2. New International Version of the Bible

tin ina valentino

Dear Denise. I know this quote well. Another version of it is carved into the fifreplace mantel in

the social hall at Rosary College (Dominican University) in River Forest and I glanced at it almost daily so many years ago. I don’t know you very well at all, though. In fa f ct, our only encounter lasted just a f w minutes and, quite honestly, I wish it had last much longer and that I could know you better. Yo fe Y u see it’s been a painfu f l year of “fi f rsts” without my mom and not everyone understands that there is no timeline fo f r grief or how much strength it takes to pull oneself out of a dark r place. But meeting you was not an accident. Yo Y u were an angel in the most unexpected place at the most opportune moment; you put a genuine smile on my otherwise unexpressive fa f ce and happy tears to my otherwise bloodshot eyes. I had no business being in Wa W lmart the day befo f re Thanksgiving. Not sure what I was thinking trying to pick up a fe f w things like packing tape, totally unrelated to the holiday, dodging oblivious people who can’t drive a shopping cart let alone a car. It wouldn’t be the fi f rst time I ditched my purchases and left f a store because I didn’t have any patience left f to wait in a ridiculously long line. But I stuck it out, waiting fo f r an employee to loudly shout out the number of the next open lane. I never expected to fi f nd someone who would actually ring up my items since the store recently converted to primarily selff check. Fumbling my stuff f fr f om my arms onto the conveyor belt, Denise began scanning and we began chatting. I mentioned that she had quite an outstanding disposition despite the steady onslaught of customers. She replied with a big smile and a fe f w words of wisdom fr f om her mother about how it costs nothing to be nice. My eyes welled up with tears at the mere mention of the word mother. W th my head down, not wanting the whole store to see that I was choked up, I mumbled that it was my Wi f rst Thanksgiving without my mom. She asked fo fi f r my name and, without hesitation, jumped out fr f om behind the register to give me a huge heartfe f lt hug. We W exchanged a fe f w more kind words and I was so moved that I almost fo f rgot one of my bags. At that moment I knew why I was in Wa W lmart that day— not to buy a turk r ey at an everyday low price but to meet an angel who showed genuine compassion to a total stranger. I glanced at her badge. Denise. By the time I got home to complete the store survey, I had already lost the receipt. So here’s my fe f edback. Dear Denise: I can’t imagine that work r ing at Wa W lmart is your dream job. Maybe it’s close to your home, maybe it’s your second job. Maybe I’ll never know your last name or see you again. But in a moment, we kicked off f the holiday season together, talking about our moms and, without even using the word Christmas, you reminded me, once again, that the real meaning of the season and of every day can be summed up in the words attributed to the Quaker missionary Stephen Grellet: “I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defe f r nor neglect it, fo f r I shall not pass this way again.” Merry Christmas and Happy New Ye Y ar, neighbors. Thank you fo f r your support, kindness and compassion during this uncharted chapter of my life f . The days of road trips to Santa’s Vi V llage, making lists and checking the tags on gift f s under our white fl f ocked tree are long behind me but there are always opportunities to keep Christmas in your heart throughout the year—you’ll fi f nd them in this magazine or in a random moment on an ordinary day, you, too, can be an angel that someone never expected but desperately needed. If you still think Christmas is about expensive gift f s and crowded malls, you need to stop in at the Northlake Wa W lmart and see Denise. God bless us, everyone!

1.3 million shared with 5 local schools to boost their security and safety systems Melrose Park Mayor Ron Serpico today distributed grants totaling $1.3 million to assist the schools in his community in developing more advanced safety and security initiatives to better protect students and avert potential threats. Serpico made the announcement at a meeting with leadership from five schools and first responders from Melrose Park. “The safety and protection of our children is the highest order of business for any community and this money will go toward ensuring that protection,” Serpico said. The money, y which is being made available from unused economic development funds, can be spent on a variety of safety enhancements in the school districts including such items as better doors and locks, surveillance cameras, and window coverings. Melrose Park recently convened a security expo for school districts in the village to talk to different vendors and see safety systems and protocols firsthand before deciding which ones Neighbors • 10

to purchase. “We believe that by bringing together school leaders and first responders we can assist in the development of stronger more effective security systems and mechanisms that help keep our children safe,” Serpico added. “We are allowing schools to pick and choose whatever safety and security measures they believe they need most, since they have a firsthand knowledge of those requirements.” Elementary School District #88 Superintendent Dr.r Victoria Hansen Stockton said the funds are most welcome at a time when student safety issues are paramount. “Anything we can do as educators to protect children in our schools is worthwhile and I am grateful to Mayor Serpico and the people of Melrose Park for assisting us in that endeavor,r” Dr.r Stockton said. The program is believed to be one of the first ever in the state where discretionary funds were made available to school districts for safety and security measures.

Speaker Welch: Berkeley Pa P rk Bike Pa P th awarded state grant to make improvements Recently Governor JB Pritzker announced $2.1 million in grants to develop and improve 13 local bike path projects throughout Illinois. The Berkeley Park Bike Path is one of the grant recipients. “This funding allows our community to make improvements along the bike path so our cyclists will have a safe and beautiful place to ride,” said Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch. “Bike paths are a great way to encourage healthy outdoor activities for our families, while also reducing our carbon footprint.” The $60,000 this project will receive from the Illinois Bicycle Path Grant Program will assist local units of government in the acquisition, construction, and rehabilitation of public off-road, non-motorized bicycle paths and any directly related facilities, such as drinking water fountains and restrooms. This grant program is administered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Funding comes from a percentage of the motor vehicle title fees, providing a maximum grant award of $200,000 per project for development projects, with no maximum grant award limit for land acquisition projects. “Bicycle path projects are excellent drivers of job creation and economic development, while also increasing road safety for bicyclists,” Governor Pritzker said. “Illinois’ beautiful natural landscape should be accessible and safe for all to enjoy, y and I’m pleased that projects like this help make that goal a reality.”
