MAKING ROOM FOR ALL Fred and Lena Meijer took great pleasure from the number of people who have joined the journey that is Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Thousands of people have become members and donors, supporting the advancement of our mission. Due to this kind of generosity, three areas of Meijer Gardens are currently undergoing complete transformation as part of the Welcoming the World: Honoring a Legacy of Love project. When you come out to visit, you will see the ongoing work to transform these areas.

The BISSELL Corridor is being widened by 12 feet to help accommodate our growth. The corridor’s original design included a serpentine walkway supported by architecturally significant tree forms. Unique “solstice walls” mark the arch of the sun as it passes overhead for the summer and winter solstice. The current expansion is not the first upgrade the BISSELL Corridor has seen. In 2008, the original tile floor needed replacing. Through the generosity of Fred and Lena Meijer, the tile was replaced with a fantastic floor sculpture entitled Beneath the Leafy Crown by artist Michele Oka Doner. The bronze elements you see in the floor represent objects found on a forest floor. The artist created them all by hand in wax, cast them in bronze and personally set them into the floor. Great care is being taken to protect and expand the sculpture as we expand the BISSELL Corridor, to be ready in November of this year.

The Hoffman Family Auditorium and all four sculpture galleries, James Balk II & Shirley Balk Gallery, Bank of America Gallery, Earl & Donnalee Holton Gallery and the Arthur & Elizabeth Snell Sculpture Gallery are also being completely rebuilt. The galleries will gain additional space, higher quality lighting, new floors and better technology to present our sculpture exhibitions. The first exhibition scheduled in the newly remodeled galleries, to be presented in collaboration with internationally acclaimed artist Yinka Shonibare CBE and the Stephen Friedman Gallery, will open on April 1, 2022.

In 2006, a significant gift was given by long-time volunteer Edie Fleming in memory of her husband Larry, to create the Volunteer Tribute Garden (VTG). This garden pays important tribute to the thousands of men, women and children who give freely of their time, talent and energy to bring joy to our members and guests. These contributions to the success of Meijer Gardens are immeasurable. As part of the Welcoming the World: Honoring a Legacy of Love project, the VTG is receiving some wonderful attention and upgrades. The expanded VTG will contain a new boardwalk, an outdoor classroom above a wetland, greater accessibility and more garden area. The Tribute sculpture by acclaimed Italian artist Oliviero Rainaldi is being reimagined by the artist and will be moved to a new location within the VTG. The boulder honoring Edie and Larry Fleming will return to its home at the entrance of this garden.

The Tassell-Wisner-Bottrall English Perennial Garden is also expanding and taking on a stunning new design by landscape designer, author and lecturer Julie Moir Messervy. Moir Messervy has masterfully worked with the current buildings and new architecture to create a unique and beautiful English Perennial Sculpture Garden. The garden will feature favorites from the past, including Dietrich Klinge’s Model for a Big Sculpture II, and Peter Randall-Page’s Warts and All. New sculptures by Monika Sosnowska and Cristina Iglesias will make their debut this summer. Returning, too, is the Leaping Gazelle Fountain which is located at the intersection of the imaginary arch lines of the sun-inspired Solstice Walls and features sculptures by Marshall Fredericks.

The VTG and the Tassell-Wisner-Bottrall English Perennial Garden will be under construction until spring of 2022. The hardscapes, sculptures and woody plants will be largely installed by late fall 2021. With the planting of the perennials and other plant material in the spring of 2022, the gardens will be ready.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES UPDATE We are pleased to announce plans for the safe return of live music this summer with three unique series—Fifth Third Bank Summer Concerts at Meijer Gardens, Tuesday Evening Music Club and the Jim & Marie Preston Sunday Strings, featuring musicians from the Grand Rapids Symphony and West Michigan. All dates, performances and information are subject to changed based on COVID-19 restrictions.

Meijer Gardens and the Grand Rapids Symphony are also excited to announce a partnership for three shows during the Fifth Third Bank Summer Concerts at Meijer Gardens. These shows include a solo Grand Rapids Symphony performance conducted by Bob Bernhardt, Principal Pops Conductor, the Grand Rapids Symphony with Pink Martini and another special show to be announced. “We are very excited to bring the Grand Rapids Symphony back to Meijer Gardens for these special concerts,” said Mary Tuuk Kuras, President & CEO of the Grand Rapids Symphony. “Our shared mission of promoting the arts and bringing our community together makes this partnership a wonderful fit.”

TUESDAY EVENING MUSIC CLUB Every summer, we proudly shine the spotlight on a select group of local and regional musicians as they take to Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater stage to headline our ever-popular Tuesday Evening Music Club.

From emerging singer-songwriters to touring bands across culturally diverse genres, these talented performers are hand-selected through a scouting process and from local artist submissions. Some are new to center stage and many are seasoned musicians. A fortunate few have played as the opening act for renowned artists in our Fifth Third Bank Summer Concert Series at Meijer Gardens.

This eclectic collection of artists spans all musical genres, from funk to jazz to R&B. From indie to surf and everything in between, there is something for everyone at the Tuesday Evening Music Club.

JIM & MARIE PRESTON SUNDAY STRINGS Musicians from the Grand Rapids Symphony and West Michigan will gather at Meijer Gardens this summer to present the Jim & Marie Preston Sunday Strings live classical chamber music concert series.

Throughout the fall, winter and spring, the Grand Rapids community supports live classical chamber music by attending recitals in several premier venues. There was no such programming for the summer months in Grand Rapids until Meijer Gardens presented the first season of Sunday Strings last year. This performance series was specifically designed to fill the summer gap and work with an already established fanbase. The attendance and enthusiasm from the audience, even during the pandemic last summer, proved that there was a desire for chamber music during the typical off-season.

Jim and Marie Preston asked to become involved in this effort and generously offered their support. “Marie and I are just delighted to sponsor this series.

We are long-time supporters of the arts in Grand Rapids and this series really speaks to us.”

WELCOME CENTER SCULPTURE HIGHLIGHTS, PART 2 In addition to horticultural displays and architectural details throughout, the new Welcome Center features prominent works of sculpture by major international artists Jaume Plensa, George Segal, Yinka Shonibare CBE, El Anatsui, Alexander Calder and the artist who sparked Fred Meijer's passion for collecting sculpture, Marshall Fredericks. Part of the permanent sculpture collection, the placement of these works alongside horticultural vistas reflects our mission as evidenced throughout the Gardens & Sculpture Park. Read on to learn more about a few of the newly placed sculptures and the artists who created them.

YINKA SHONIBARE CBE. APHRODITE DE FRÉJUS, 2018 AND FARNESE HERCULES, 2017.

Born in London and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Yinka Shonibare is one of the most recognized and distinguished British-Nigerian artists working today. Shonibare has exhibited around the world, including participation in important contemporary art exhibitions such as Documenta and Venice Biennale. Among his many public art projects is the prestigious public commission for Trafalgar Square in London. He was a nominee for the distinguished Turner Prize in 2004; in 2013, he was elected as Royal Academician; and in 2019, he was honored with the title of CBE or Commander of the Office of the British Empire which he has adopted as part of his name.

Referring to his dual identity as Nigerian and British, Shonibare is a self-described “post-colonial hybrid.” His art finds inspiration in art historical sources from Greco-Roman antiquity to African design. Welcoming guests as they approach the Daniel and Pamella DeVos Ticketing Center, Shonibare’s Aphrodite de Fréjus and Farnese Hercules are in conversation with classical statues, challenging Western ideals: Aphrodite or Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and Hercules or Herakles, the hero of the Twelve Labors. Both antique sculptures are on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Shonibare reimagines them with his signature Dutch wax batik patterns painted on the surface. He gives each sculpture a new postcolonial interpretation by playfully turning their heads into globes and showing the African continent where the face would be, adding contemporary meaning and a context to explore race and power.

Born in Liverpool, England, Tony Cragg is an internationally recognized sculptor whose work is collected by major museums around the world. Growing up in Great Britain, Cragg first pursued a career in science before studying art. In the 1970s, he moved to Wuppertal, Germany, where he still lives and maintains a studio. He has held several teaching positions and directorships at distinguished art schools over the years, including the Art Academy of Düsseldorf and the University of Arts in Berlin. His early work consisted of assemblage sculpture, using plastic and other found material. Over the past few decades, Cragg has been constantly searching for new materials that allow him to push the language of sculpture.

Tony Cragg eventually turned toward the traditional medium of bronze, which the artist considered archaic but also full of potential to push the relationship of material, creativity and the human mind. Cragg is now well-known for his large bronze and stone columns which reveal faces as you move around them.

Bent of Mind is one of his most ambitious bronze sculptures; two separate faces come into view as if the column has shifted off center into different directions. It welcomes guests on the Frey Foundation Plaza before they enter the Welcome Center.

Manuel Neri is considered one of the great American figurative sculptors of the twentieth century. Born in California to Mexican parents who were farm laborers, Neri studied art in the San Francisco Bay area where he later taught for many decades.

He first received national recognition in the 1950s as part of a group from California known as the Bay Area figurative artists. His work is now in major museum collections across the United States.

In 1981, Neri opened a studio in Carrara, a city in Italy known for its rich marble deposits quarried since the days of ancient Rome. The sculpture Odalisque IV, placed inside the PNC Portico, is a great example of the artist’s skillful carving technique, alternating smooth and polished surface treatment with rougher chisel marks. The figure in Neri’s Odalisque IV has a deep reclining posture with intense gesture, her knees and arms forming angular counter movements to the torso. Neri here translated an ancient material and art historical theme into contemporary expressionistic form. This sculpture has been relocated from the Sculpture Park to better protect its delicate material from the elements.

FROM THE HIRSHHORN MUSEUM TO THE ROOFTOP On an early March day, I took my first stroll of the year through the Stuart and Barbara Padnos Rooftop Sculpture Garden. While this unique space was still closed to the public for the winter, its walkway was mostly clear of ice, except for a small stretch hidden away from the sun. Nature was starting to emerge, with the earliest signs of spring coming into new life. Some of last year’s tall grasses were still standing, and from the wetlands, I heard the familiar first sounds of geese arriving from their southern travels. As I took in this serene scene, it struck me that the picture I was forming in my mind’s eye would be incomplete without the presence of four sculptures embedded into this changing landscape.

Since 2019, these four sculptures have been on loan to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution’s premier venue for modern and contemporary art. We were able to borrow these masterworks of modern sculpture while the Hirshhorn’s sculpture garden undergoes renovation—and I’m happy to report that the loan was just extended for another year.

These four masterpieces by Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Marino Marini and David Smith represent some of the finest examples of modern sculpture found in any collection in the United States. Each one reveals insights into the dramatic and historic transformation of American and European sculpture after World War II. When Italian artist Marino Marini first began to exhibit his horse and rider sculptures in the United States, they struck a chord with critics and collectors alike. The works were reminiscent of classic monumental equestrian sculpture, yet Marini’s fusion of form, space, volume and movement was entirely modernist. The Hirshhorn’s Horse and Rider bronze sculpture is a particularly dynamic example. The rider precariously leans backward, arms outstretched, while the horse thrusts its head in a strong upward movement. This abrupt interplay of vertical, diagonal and horizontal lines is a strong indication of how Marini broke with classical tradition to create what some have called an “anti-monument”.

Sited on the other side of the rooftop garden is another figurative bronze, Draped Reclining Figure by British artist Henry Moore, which is positioned clearly in dialogue with Marini’s Horse and Rider. Both artists designed these bronzes in the early 1950s, and both works present an archaic-looking figure in modern, abstracted style. As you take them in, notice the great differences in the way these artists articulated the body in space. The weight and balance of each sculpture points into opposite directions. Reclining Figure is lifting her body up by her arms and legs yet her weight remains attached to the ground. For Moore, this emphasis of the inner vitality and inner strength of the figure was very important. It was his balance in expressing inside and outside form that made him a master of twentieth-century sculpture.

These works are complemented by two significant abstract sculptors of the last century, David Smith and Alexander Calder.

Smith was an American artist from the Midwest who joined the abstract expressionist movement in New York. He developed his own expressionistic style welding industrial metal into three-dimensional collages. Exploring new abstract forms in ever-changing constellations, Smith became one of the most innovative sculptors of his generation. Cubi XII is a brilliant example of his late sculptures, which combine stainless steel cubes into gravity-defying abstractions floating in space. The texture of the stainless steel itself is dazzling, revealing the artist’s burnishing of the surface.

The grouping of Hirshhorn sculptures is completed by Alexander Calder’s whimsical Sky Hooks, which is fabricated with thin sheets of steel. Calder had a fascinating artistic career that started with toy constructions, miniature circuses and wire portraits culminating in abstract sculptures that were either suspended (mobiles) or standing on the ground (stabiles). Sky Hooks dates from Calder’s late career, when he designed many large sculptures for museums, corporate lobbies and city plazas.

While smaller in scale than his large and monumental La Grande Vitesse in downtown Grand Rapids, Sky Hooks shares a similar aesthetic. Both sculptures are abstract and simultaneously suggestive of animal parts or other objects from the natural world.

Depending on perspective, elements of Sky Hooks resemble either fins or anchor hooks.

It’s important to note that, except for David Smith, each of these artists has a companion piece—or what I like to call a “cousin”—in our permanent sculpture collection at Meijer Gardens. Make sure to see Alexander Calder’s Polychrome Lures in the new Welcome Center, and venture outside to the Sculpture Park to view Marini’s Juggler and two bronzes by Moore, Bronze Form and Working Model for Divided Oval: Butterfly.

Upon leaving the Padnos Rooftop Sculpture Garden that early spring day, I encountered one of our horticulturists who shared that this quiet garden would be bustling with guests later that weekend. While I did not physically jump, my heart leapt at that thought. Make sure you make time to revel in this rooftop on your next visit.

More than a mere walkway, the BISSELL Corridor connects our gardens and galleries, and even becomes a center stage to beloved annual horticulture exhibitions like Metro Health Christmas & Holiday Traditions, Chrysanthemums & More! and Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming, which alone draws an astounding 180,000 guests in a typical year.

As our membership and attendance has grown, so has 10

our need to widen this narrow footpath for the comfort and convenience of our members and guests. Doing so will greatly enhance the Meijer Gardens guest experience by increasing accessibility from the BISSELL Corridor to restrooms, drinking fountains and hand sanitizing stations, all the while allowing more people to fully enjoy the indoor container gardens, sculpture and educational opportunities within. Expanding this well-traversed space also gives way to expanded exhibition displays that bring even more surprise and delight on your every visit.

In total, the width of the BISSELL Corridor will increase from 13-feet to 23-feet at its narrowest point, and from 19-feet to-31 feet at its widest—a dramatic expansion that will allow several exciting enhancements. As with every element of our

expansion, the space has been sustainably designed with accessiblity and LEED-certification in mind.

Simply put: More space means more access. As you enter the BISSELL Corridor from the south, the wall on the right is being pushed out and curved to mirror the curve on the opposing wall. The current credentialing area will be moved, to make way for more efficient ticketing and traffic flow, as well as additional gathering space and greater enjoyment of Beneath the Leafy Crown by Michele Oka Doner. This distinctive floor sculpture will be fully refinished and expanded to accommodate the new layout. Restroom entrances have been relocated to the north wall across from the DeVos-Keeler Gift Shop, to accommodate larger groups coming and going from the Huizenga Grand Room.

Newly-expanded sculpture galleries will also be reconfigured, with square-footage that allow for more, and more enhanced, exhibition space. The Peter M. Wege Library has been expanded and relocated to the Courtyard Level of the Welcome Center just adjacent to Mimi's Garden, so that the Hoffman Family Auditorium can be moved into the library’s former location.

The BISSELL Corridor is slated for completion late 2021, with outdoor plantings ready the following spring. We appreciate your patience as our new campus continues to unfold and expand. As we prepared to enter the second year of working from home, I began to think about meaningful ways for the Sabo PR team to connect beyond our weekly distanced happy hour. I decided on offering a monthly get-together that would allow our crew to gather safely, enjoy an experience and support the local economy. The gift of membership at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park checked all those boxes—with the added benefit of allowing our team, their spouses and partners to enjoy the beauty of Meijer Gardens for an entire year. As a longtime member of Meijer Gardens, I appreciated the opportunity to support an organization dear to my heart and important to our community.

EVENTS REIMAGINED This past year has been proof positive that change is indeed the only constant. While our hospitality team has embraced a new way of working, our commitment to creating exceptional—and exceptionally safe—events remains the same. Come see for yourself.

Meetings and events at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park are back—and better than ever. After a year-long hiatus due to evolving pandemic restrictions, we are ecstatic to once again be filling our calendar with safe events topped with our signature special touches, of course.

Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering or a combination virtual/in-person event, our award-winning hospitality team has risen to the challenge of designing experiences that are creative yet compliant with MDHHS Orders, CDC guidelines and your tailored needs. The safety of every person, from you and your guests to Meijer Gardens employees and volunteers, will always be our top priority as we serve our community and strive to make your individual goals a reality.

Our Hospitality department has always upheld uncompromisingly high standards for hygiene and cleanliness. It’s a commitment that earned us the Kent County Health Department Food Service Award for Outstanding Food Safety Practices. Most recently, we were among the first to adopt the new MI COVID-19 Safer Dining Certifications and implement extra precautions to safeguard the health and wellbeing of everyone at Meijer Gardens.

In preparation for returning to serving our guests, we created an extensive COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan, which includes new capacity levels, new entrance procedures, one-way traffic patterns, physical distancing with floor markers, hand sanitizing stations, contact tracing forms and designated eating areas. Our safety plans include stringent cleaning protocols with increased frequency, employee training and the development of best practices. Daily health screenings of all employees, volunteers and vendors are another improvement, as is required personal protection gear.

To improve environmental safety, our building ventilation systems have been extensively evaluated and are being monitored for proper airflow, ventilation and circulation. All air handlers are disinfected on a regular basis. We’re committed to cleaning the entire facility with EPA-approved disinfectants, with a special focus on common areas. On your next visit, note the hand sanitation stations throughout the building, along with cashless and touchless point-ofsales options and plexiglass barriers to enhance your safety.

Compliance is an ongoing commitment, and we have implemented a designated COVID-19 Task Force to administer the changing orders. As we navigate new meeting and event guidelines, we have invested in innovative diagramming software to assist our hospitality team in effectively measuring safe distancing and space configurations. We are also reviewing seating capacities and event diagrams to come up with creative floor plans that allow guests to be connected yet meet the physical distancing requirements to keep everyone safe as they enjoy their time with us.

TEQUILA-LIME SHRIMP TACOS Spice up your summer cookouts with Executive Chef Andy Krause’s own grilled shrimp tacos. Delicious and delightfully easy to prep and grill, they’ll leave you plenty of time to entertain and enjoy your company. We recommend two tacos per guest. Don’t be afraid to serve family style and let your guests build their own creations with our signature accompaniments and refreshing cocktail. Yum! Feeds 4 adults.

FOR THE SHRIMP INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1p ound raw shrimp, 21–25 size, peeled, deveined, tail removed

1. Put cleaned, raw shrimp in a Ziploc® bag and pour marinade over the top.

1 tablespoon chopped garlic

3. After marinating, remove shrimp from the bag and skewer on metal skewers.

2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 1 tablespoon olive oil

4. P lace on the grill with medium flame and cook for 3–4 minutes, then flip skewers and cook for another 3–4 minutes. (Times may vary).

¼ cup lime juice

5. Shrimp will be done when semi-firm to the touch and the inner flesh is fully opaque.

2 tablespoons tequila

6. Remove shrimp from metal skewers and place on a platter to serve.

1 t ablespoon peach simple syrup Try our recipe below!

1. In a rocks glass, combine simple syrup, bitters and one peach slice.

5 dashes bitters

2. Muddle well to mix ingredients.

2 fresh peach slices

3. Add bourbon whiskey and fill glass with ice cubes.

2½ ounces bourbon whiskey

4. Garnish with the second peach slice, blackberries and a splash of soda water.

Splash soda water 2 blackberries, to garnish

5. Stir to combine. Bottoms up!

FOR THE SIMPLE SYRUP INGREDIENTS

1. Bring the sugar and water to a boil and then drop in the peaches.

Witness the Japanese art of chanoyu, or tea ceremony. Graceful Japanese tea masters in elegant kimono will perform the ceremonial cleansing of the utensils, thoughtful preparation and quiet presentation of a bowl of matcha (finely ground green tea), with commentary by a representative from the Japanese Consulate. After the presentation, savor traditional sweets and matcha green tea.

As an integral part of this experience, all guests will utilize and enjoy original works of Shigaraki pottery from Meijer Gardens’ permanent collection. Each object is a work of fine art specially commissioned from Japan’s leading ceramics masters. This contemplative ceremony appeals to all five senses and is best observed quietly. Explore the whimsical nature of sculptures located at Silver Beach County Park. And talk form versus function at the Box Factory for the Arts grounds. Especially highlighted is the work of a Meijer Gardens’ sculptor, Richard Hunt, who has a studio in Benton Harbor that he visits regularly. ORNAMENTAL CONTAINER GARDENS* INSTRUCTOR: Tony England FEE: $25 members, $35 non-members Learn how to create eye-catching container gardens that include tropical plants, summer annuals, shrubs, branches, native plants and more! Discover ways to utilize your container gardens through all four seasons and receive tips on designing them—from container size and type to effective plant combinations size, effective plant combinations to support pollinators and overall layout. Understand the care and maintenance that goes into a container garden after it is planted to achieve the best results. Watch as Meijer Gardens horticulturist, Tony England, demonstrates how to build a container garden from the soil up!

INSTRUCTOR: Megan Williams FEE: $60 members, $70 non-members Learn to dye with natural indigo in this handson workshop. Explore the beautiful blue that can be achieved with two types of fermentation vats and the process of building darker shades.

We will discuss and experiment with shibori techniques and make a lovely table runner to take home. Leave with recipes, shibori-dyed samples and a dyed table runner. All materials provided. Dress appropriately, as dyes will stain.

Capture the mood of the Woodland Shade Garden in watercolor. Explore the poetry made artful by Jenny Holzer. Visit the Shade Garden and explore the creatures that live under the soil by digging with kid-sized trowels.

Virginia Lee Montgomery: Sword in the Sphinx ArtPrize 2021 September 16–October 3

In 2018, Virginia Lee Montgomery participated as an Emerging Artist Fellow in the Socrates Annual Exhibition at Socrates Sculpture Park in New York City where she exhibited Sword in the Sphinx. The sculpture is based on a famous French 18th Century garden statue of a sphinx figure with a female head. Montgomery cast the sculpture in resin and placed a steel sword into the body. The sculpture, which sits on a 5.5-foot pedestal, will be the main outdoor sculpture during ArtPrize, prominently on display near the entrance to the Welcome Center. The outdoor sculpture is complemented by three marble sculptures that are part of Montgomery’s Marble Ponytail series. There is a video entitled Ponytail Hotel that will accompany these indoor sculptures.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park promotes the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of gardens, sculpture, the natural environment and the arts.
