Collectives The Arbornauts - http://arbornauts.org/ Lydia Burggraaf, Amanda White, and Meghan Krauss The Arbornauts is an interdisciplinary and collaborative art project that attempts to re-imagine our engagement with public space in the urban environment. Existing between the unknown and the obvious, the urban tree canopy becomes the site of an imaginary mission. The Arbornauts are women taking on the role of explorer in a parody of the mesmerizing early space expeditions of NASA. On these expeditions, the Arbornauts venture into the frontier (climb trees in public spaces) to retrieve valuable geophysical information. As a narrative for the project, the objective is to survey these new geographies for future use however the real objective is to provoke tree-climbing behavior.

The Boot Lydia Burggraaf, Amanda White, Sarah Chomko, Riaz Mehmood, and Meghan Krauss The Boot is an ongoing MFA graduate student initiative, which aims to improve the cooperative and community experience at the School of Visual Arts at the University of Windsor. Borne out of a desire for a greater sense of community within the MFA program, and greater involvement in the larger School of Visual Arts, our primary goal is to generate a more positive environment by identifying and rectifying deficiencies. Drawing on the resources we bring individually, a co-operative mentality will become a source of alternative learning and creative opportunities.

Exposure - Photography Lecture The Juniper Hotel & Bistro, Banff, AB Presentation on my artistic work.

2012

Symposium – New Growth: Dialogues on the Tree York University, Toronto, ON The Arbornauts (an artistic collective of three) gave a presentation proposing how public city parks exist in the marginal space between nature (where humans are not) and the city. This definition of the space necessitates our engagement with the park to be within our capacity as a cultured human in contrast to that of the uncultured child or animal climbing trees.

2008 - 2009

Photography Lecture Centennial Collegiate, Saskatoon, SK Presentation on my artistic work.

2008

Photography Lecture/ Drawing Class George Vanier, Saskatoon, SK Gave a presentation on my artistic work, and facilitated students with drawing techniques allowing them to sketch their photographs using perspective techniques.

Professional and Teaching Experience 2016 – Present •

Photo I – Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC This introductory photography course covers basic manual camera operation (ISO, shutter speed, aperture) and briefly touches on post-production solutions (including Adobe Bridge, Camera Raw, Adobe Photoshop, digital printing and presentation methods). Critiques, individual meetings and image-based presentations ground students’ photo projects amongst photography practices and provide technical and creative resources. Students may choose to explore either traditional (film-based) and/or digital photography.

Photo II - Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC This intermediate class is taught with the premise that students have an understanding of the basics of photography including: exposure, depth of field, and postproduction skills. These techniques are further developed with a focus on history, theory, and artistic concepts and strategies used by artists working in photography. Students can expect critical discussion and slide presentations to support and encourage personal development. Focus is on digital photography however darkroom instruction and access is a available to those who are interested.

Urban Photography - Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC This course is intended to deepen the understanding of urban spaces and to enhance methodological skills for capturing different aspects of urban scenes. Photography can help us observe the details of everyday life we often overlook. By reflecting on these urban subjects through photographic theories, themes, and contemporary examples, students broaden their understanding on the subject, and through hands-on experience, they will create a project on the theme of urban spaces. By selecting and exploring a specific topic based on the idea of urban scenes, students learn to express their own personal responses to the subject.

Post-Production 101 - Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC A 2-Week long workshop for beginners, where I taught the essentials of how to achieve an efficient digital work flow using Adobe Bridge, Camera Raw and basic functions of Adobe Photoshop. Basic image editing and manipulation, along with downloading of file management techniques to store images were also covered.

Professional Development - Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC Students learn the basics of preparing professional materials such as an artist statement and images of their work, as well as how to make an artist website using a template. The course covers the different types of exhibition venues including commercial, artist run spaces and public galleries, as well as applying for grants and residencies. Students work on producing a group or solo printed catalog that includes a written essay.

Advanced Studio II - Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC Advanced Studio II continues the focus of developing the body of work started in the first semester. Students continue their independent work, weekly meetings with their advisor and continue to participate in the Advanced Studio Seminar readings/assignments.

Drawing for the Absolute Beginner - Instructor Vancouver Island School of Art, Victoria, BC This course is designed for people with no drawing experience. Students learn how to use basic materials such as pencils, charcoal and ink to draw everyday objects, landscapes and people. Victoria Photowalk – Tour Guide/Instructor Victoria, BC Photowalks are short, 2 hour, customized, photography lessons throughout different Victoria locations depending on the photographers skill levels. The tours help students take their photography skills to the next level, while learning the history of the historic city of Victoria.

2012 - 2015 • Photography Practicum Participant

The Banff Centre for the Arts, Banff, AB Given exposure to, built relationships and worked collaboratively with all programming areas of The Banff Centre including the arts, leadership, mountain culture programs, conference business, and technical services. Through these exchanges, I experienced a real world photographic commercial work environment where I photographed numerous public events held at The Banff Centre. This includes, but is not limited to, capturing candid and formal portraits, event photography and group photographs. To processes these images efficiently, I adapted a productive workflow using Abode Bridge, Camera Raw and Adobe Photoshop to digitally archive images captured in a timely manner. I regularly colour calibrated monitors, used on camera flashes and lighting kits, performed computer troubleshooting as needed, and helped maintained digital and wet darkroom equipment. I often facilitated artists and staff, from basic to advanced levels, with Adobe Photoshop enquiries, scanning slides, negatives or documents and large format printing projects, up to 60”, where guidance was given on adjustments to the images and paper types.

2014

Post-Production 101 - Teaching Bow Valley Learning Council, Banff, AB A 3-Week long workshop for beginners, where I taught the essentials of how to achieve an efficient digital work flow using Adobe Bridge, Camera Raw and basic functions of Adobe Photoshop. Basic image editing and manipulation, along with downloading of file management techniques to store images were also covered.

Photography 101 - Teaching Town of Banff, Banff, AB A 5-Week long photography workshop for beginners, where I taught the essentials of 35mm and digital SLR photography including camera functions, techniques, lenses, shutter speeds, aperture control, digital recording and other aspects of digital imaging. Basic image editing and manipulation, along with downloading of file management techniques to store images were also covered.

Visual Explorer – Leadership Lens Development Office, The Banff Centre, Banff, AB Assisted in facilitating the participants in thinking about how images can communicate a variety of messages. Created lesson plans and gave lectures/assignments based on movements such as Dada, Bauhaus, Modern and Postmodern movements for portions of the course.

The Arbornauts: The Takeover University of Windsor, Windsor, ON The Arbornauts (an artistic collective of three) took over a studio practice and ideas/image foundations class at the University of Windsor in the Visual Arts program. Along with a public performance of tree climbing and a slide presentation highlighting relevant artist movements, The Arbornauts encouraged the class to think about the spaces that they are surround by. The class was split into groups and The Arbornauts facilitated the students in the creation of large scale, 3-dimensional maps, based on the visual arts building.
