As an Editor

The role of an editor came with several responsibilities which I was able to learn and develop from as an editor. Some of the responsibilities included communication skills, time management skills, proofing/signing off content and diplomatic skills. I enjoyed this proses more than I thought as I was worried about the proofreading element the role had due to my dyslexia however, after confronting my weaknesses. Instead of allowing the stress and anxiousness to take over, I used this as an opportunity to find out what my strengths are within the editor role.

My strengths came in the form of embracing a leadership role and delegating the contract by giving the team a theme and heading to choose from and if it would be print or online (as seen in figure one). Reflecting on this experience, I recognise the effectiveness a structured work tasks, and this is the working approach I will be taking with me if I were to do this again as it had a positive response from the team. They did not have to waste time thinking of a topic to read about and were able to through themselves into it straight away. I learned more about my character than I first would through this journey as my confidence has grown, the leadership skill of being an editor is a skill that I want to develop and work on in future group settings both in Uni and in the workplace (Bolton, 2018).

Too little too late?

Is it too late for the lingerie brand Victoria Secret to make a comeback after facing backlash and having to cancel the world-famous shows in 2018 after nearly 2 decades. The brand’s comeback was a disappointment as it did not live up to expectations which raises the question has the iconic fashion show run its course?

Victoria Secret was the ‘it’ brand in the 2000s with its famous shows growing every year in views and popularity from 2001-2016 before the shows started to decline. The brand when at its peak in 2016 was $7.7 billion in revenue and dropped to barely $5 billion in 2020. The brands featured a list of celebrities in the model (Kendal Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Adriana Perry, Taylor Swift, The Weekend and Halsey) were just some of the some of the big headliners.

The brand for many girls was a staple, and for many it was where they got their first bra, the iconic body sprays and having the memorable pink striped shopping bag. The brand was the birthplace of some of the biggest names in the fashion world; Hedia Klum, Tyra Banks and Gisele Bundchen. The fashion shows in the mid 2000s became so popularity that it earns its own Hollywood walk of frame –BBC.

The brand faces many controversies over the years with culture appropriation (with earing a native American head dress, Chinese dragon and tribal features) and the unrealistic body imagines (set by the brand). The brands former boss did not want diversity within the shows and when presented with the question “Shouldn’t you have transsexuals in the show? No, no, I don’t think we should. Well, why not? Because the show is a fantasy”- Razek. Due to this the models had strict rules with the way they look, and as the shows went on the models got thinner. The girls had to have less than 15% of body fat (an average woman is between 25-35%). In a result of the rules some of the girls developed eating disorder problems with a former runway model for the brand spoke out “I’ve never experienced anything like it before and I hope I never again. It was truly quite a traumatic experience.’’ - Bridget Malcolm and others have said ‘they have to put their bodies to such extremes once they cast the show, they couldn’t maintain that kinds of lifestyle or they’d die’. This begs the question is a show or entertainment wroth this type of act?

What better way to start the new year than jetting off on a new adventure, in a new city? With many destinations to close from it can be hard to decides. Budapest is known for its beautiful architectural, thermal baths and Hungarian cuisine and makes the perfect city to explore, with a friend, family, partner or solo.

To get the most out of your time here is a 3-day guild and review of places to eat, drink, shop and experience. Budapest is gluten free friendly and is rated in the top 5 for being the best gluten free cities in Europe (The food spots mentioned are all gluten-free).

The Hungarian people are nothing short of kind and helpful, although the city is big it still has a small town feeling where even at night you feel safe.

Budapest is one of the few places that have a gluten free menu in McDonald’s and serve curly fries (so much better than normal chips).

An early start to the today with a busy day ahead, as always, the best way to start the day is a fresh made coffee and gluten free cinnamon roll at Café Analóg. Unlike some places in Europe, Budapest has many delicious gluten free options to offer. It is then a quick Metro trip over the river into Pest, and a little walk to arrive at Oroszlános Udvar where you will see the most beautiful views of the city where it will quite literally take your breath away. One of Budapest most visited and iconic place (Fisherman’s Bastion) is just a short walk away. The Bastion was inspired by early medieval architectural, and another amazing place for city views (perfect for Instagram).

As the sun is going down the night is beginning in Budapest, with the day of walking you will build up an appetite. Lipótvaros is hands down one of the best places for gluten free carbonara and a glass of rosé wine. To finish the night off from a perfect day is a walk through Erzsébet tér where you will find the wheel and see the city in a different light at night.

Another early start to the day with a big breakfast from Franziska, avocado on toast with a poached egg and pomegranate, a yoghurt bowl with granola and berry combo and finally pancakes topped with banana and served with a Bueno sauce. As there is simply to many yummy things to try and hands down the best gluten free pancakes around. After all that food it is time to relax and what better way them visiting the thermal baths (Széchenyi thermal bath, Budapest) as Budapest is called the city of bath, it is definitely one to visit.

For the evening meal it will be hard to choose with all the amazing food places, Riso Ristorante and terrace serves flavoursome Caesar salad and chips topped with a glass of rosé wine (girl dinner). To finish the only right thing is to visit Rumpus Tiki Bar where the cocktails and fun begins.

The final full day in the beautiful city is packed with a full day of activities, starting with going to the New York café that is nothing short of magnificent and takes you back in time with the artwork that is from floor to ceiling and was opened in 1894. It is voted in the most beautiful and beloved coffee house in Budapest, the café is popular with writers and editors. Than a short Metro to the fashion street at Deák Ferenc tér , where will-power really has to take power as you will need to buy a second suit case to get home with all the temptations. After shopping a fun activity to go in the selfie museum base on Ràkòczi Street, not only will you leave with some brilliant photos but you will leave laughing. For the last night the light museum is a must that will take 1-2 hours to explore and that is open everyday from 10am-10pm.

For all the Budapest had to offer the best thing in Budapest is the river crusie at night where you will go past the Parament building and Badu castle, the whole experience is picturesque. The final meal like any true tourist finished at Hardrock.

The Metro is the cheapest and eariest transport to use (79p a on way trip)

Relfection

when I initially started the journey of creating this report I wanted to build back my love for creatiness which I had also seen as my strength. However, the fear of failing came into my mind knowing I was going to have to pull myself into the unfamiliar territory of InDesign and Adobe Express as I had only used Canva in the past. After I had spent time exploring them my confidence grew with time, and my love for creativeness came right back with coming up with a theme, laying out how I wanted things to look and creating GIFs. What I have taken from this journey the most is a newfound appreciation of stepping outside my comfort zone and not being worried about ‘failing’.

For the New Year’s eve look book, I started off with a print addition however, as my confidence grew I wanted to keep trying new things. This is why I changed it to an online post with GIFs and links to each of the items.

This begs the question is a show or entertainment wroth this type of act?

Their values have come a long way from their earlier values, as the brand is trying to change its reputation ‘As one of our company’s core values, we understand, appreciate and leverage diversity to provide value for our customers, associates and shareholders’ - VS&Co Press. But has the brands focus on ticking a box made the brand lose its iconic reputation that was loved by the millions. Victoria Secret fashion shows were one of a kind back in the mid 2000s but now they do not stand out to any other lingerie fashion brands.

When Razek retired in 2019, the brand tried to add diversity within the new launch of fashion shows which has come a long way from the earlier shows with having plus size and different ages of women. With the lunch not being as big as the brand through it would be, does this mean that it’s not what the customers wanted with a fan of the brand commenting ‘I think they almost took it too far too quick if you get me? They just went from one end to the other trying to keep up with other big brands, changing their image being more inclusive but lost themselves in the process a bit. I respect it but fallen out of love with the brand’- Frankie. Although the brand was not diverse is that what the customers wanted? As the fashion shows were not just about the clothing it was about the whole show, the music, the atmosphere and the lead up. Perhaps if the show was the same as before just with a range of models, they could have made a good comeback?
