We are pleased to welcome you to our 26th annual on-property auction and are pleased to offer you 80 powerful, robust, carcase filled, fertile bulls. When we look at the bulls, we are very proud of the type and the decades of breeding that they are backed by, especially the strong cow families.
Once again, we feel this group of sale bulls brings to the fore the Karoo philosophy of producing bulls that will move your herd forward genetically. Our aim is to combine growth, performance and carcase into their progeny. The type of cattle we breed are high performance cattle, both from a genetic perspective and have a sensible maturity pattern. We believe the two most profit makers are maximizing the number of live calves born and the kilos of beef grown per hectare. Our bulls are known for explosive growth, which is evident in our, and our clients, cattle at the blue ribbon weaner sale, where we always command a premium. They topped the market this year with a pen of steers from Ben and Mandy Emms. Karoo bred heifers were also awarded best presented pen, bred by Pat Liz, Eilish and Ellie Reen.
This year again we are looking at an abundance of rain, which will set us, and many others, up for a fantastic start to spring with a full moisture profile. The premiums for Angus cattle are more evident than ever. Those with high performing genetics are certainly seeing the rewards, whichever way you decide to market your cattle.
Clients are returning to Karoo bulls purely for profitability. It’s great to hear from clients that their weight gains have significantly increased, which allows them to hit market specs quicker by using Karoo genetics. The beef industry has seen a shift in proceedings over the last 12 months, coming off record high prices and record low interest rates. This makes it even more important to focus on gains that can be made in your business through increased productivity.
We have had numerous people come through the sale line up already, all very impressed with how even they are. True to our “Karoo type” with plenty of meat, muscle, fertility, growth and carcase characteristics. While this is evident, we still value the fleshing and ease of do ability all done, by our whole herd, on a grass based system.
The main sire lines in this year’s bull sale include Quarterback, Karoo Momentous R21 and Rennylea
L519 and a son of his from Booroomooka. We also have new sires Sitz Resilient and Lawsons Rocky. Quarterback is well known for the powerhouse that he is, combined with low birth weight, explosive growth and exceptional IMF. He breeds exceptionally long cattle that have the nicest nature and pretty handy EBVs. R21 has 8 sons in this sale, they are an amazingly powerful group of bulls with some standouts at the front of the catalogue. L519 is a bull that breeds very well shaped animals that are full of muscle while being stylish and easy doing. They are very productive and true to the Karoo Angus type, just fully loaded with red meat.
We extend a warm welcome to all visitors, to see this sale group of bulls. Our open day is Friday 2nd August, from 10am to 3pm. Or if that does not suit, please arrange a time that suits you to inspect the bulls.
All bulls have been sired verified, tested Pestivirus negative, vaccinated, drenched vet inspected, and semen tested. We look forward to seeing you on sale day for a complimentary morning tea and lunch.
Good luck with your bidding, the Karoo team along with Elders Emms Mooney are more than happy to talk you through your bull buying needs. The sale starts at 1pm under the hammer and online bidding is available through AuctionsPlus.
We would like to thank you, our clients, for your continued support of Karoo. We appreciate each one of you for the role you play in making Karoo a successful family business.
Best wishes to all,

ABOUT THE BULLS
THEKAROO ANGUS GUARANTEE
HEALTH
All bulls are offered with our quality assurance guarantee. In addition, we take the following steps at ‘Karoo’, against reproductive losses. This means that all bulls have: - Been tested to prove they are PI Negative via TSU samples - vaccinated with: 7-in-1, Lepto, Pestiguard, Vibro, IBR, Flukazole C, Lice treatment – Stampede
All bulls have either been tested free of genetic mutations (AM, NH, CA, DD), except for lot 28 NH Carrier, Lot 43 DD Carrier, Lot 73 CA Carrier and Lot 75 DD Carrier or are pedigree free from such mutations.
FERTILITY
All bulls have been vet inspected for physical soundness and palpitation of the sexual anatomy, and measurement and examination of testes. Any claim against fertility must be forwarded to the vendor or agent within nine (9) months accompanied by a veterinary certificate.
VISUAL ASSESSMENT
When choosing bulls you need to use both the EBVs and visual assessment. Visual assessment is essential to assess physical and structural soundness and is a reasonable indicator of health and temperament. EBVs are a tool that will help you to make more ‘educated’ decisions when you are choosing breeding stock. Do your homework well before the sale when you have plenty of time. Set some parameters for your EBVs that fall within your market requirements to narrow down potential purchases. Use this ‘suitable list’ of bulls and spend time looking, assessing the physical characteristics that you require.
THE KAROO GUARANTEE
All sale bulls have been examined for fertility. This examination includes a semen test and palpitation of the sexual anatomy, measurement and examination of the testes. At Karoo we are proud of the product that we offer to our customers. We guarantee the fertility of all the bulls. If a bull should prove infertile or breaks down due to reasons other than injury, misadventure or negligence, Karoo will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue you with a credit equal to the purchase price minus any salvage value. Any request for replacement or refund must be lodged with the vendor or agent within nine months from the date of purchase, accompanied by a veterinary certificate. We wish you every success with your purchase and we believe that the bulls will enhance your breeding programme, however if you have any problems, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
SEMEN RIGHTS
Karoo reserves the right to collect semen for within herd use from any bull that is sold. This will be at our expense and the purchases convenience.
ANGUS SIRE ASSURED
All bulls in this catalogue are DNA sire verified. This improves the integrity of the pedigree, genetic condition and Angus BREEDPLAN EBV information that is provided.

Understanding the TransTasman
Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE)
What is the TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation?
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus influenced beef cattle. The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (e.g. weight, carcase, fertility).
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation is an international genetic evaluation and includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and Angus New Zealand databases, along with selected information from the American and Canadian Angus Associations.
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation utilises a range of genetic evaluation software, including the internationally recognised BLUPF90 family of programs, and BREEDPLAN® beef genetic evaluation analytical software, as developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England, and Meat and Livestock Australia Limited (MLA).
What is an EBV?
An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).
EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and a historical genetic level (i.e. group of animals) within the TACE genetic evaluation, and are reported in the units in which the measurements are taken.
Using EBVs to Compare the Genetics of Two Animals
TACE EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected difference equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (e.g. they are joined to the same animal/s).
For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10 kg heavier at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40 kg (i.e. 20
kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400 kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (i.e. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
Using EBVs to Benchmark an Animal’s Genetics with the Breed
EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus or Angus infused animals recorded with Angus Australia. To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to the EBV reference tables, which provide:
• the breed average EBV
• the percentile bands table
The current breed average EBV is listed on the bottom of each page in this publication, while the current EBV reference tables are included at the end of these introductory notes.
For easy reference, the percentile band in which an animal’s EBV ranks is also published in association with the EBV.
Considering Accuracy
An accuracy value is published with each EBV, and is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV.
EBVs with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50-74% as of medium accuracy, 75-90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy.
Description of TACE EBVs
EBVs are calculated for a range of traits within TACE, covering calving ease, growth, fertility, maternal performance, carcase merit, feed efficiency and structural soundness. A description of each EBV included in this publication is provided on the following page.

$A $
$A-L $
Genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined in a typical commercial self replacing herd using Angus bulls. This selection index is not specific to a particular market end-point, but identifies animals that will improve overall net profitability in the majority of commercial, self replacing, grass and grain finishing beef production systems.
The $A-L index is similar to the $A index but is modelled on a production system where feed is surplus to requirements for the majority of the year, or the cost of supplying additional feed when animal feed requirements increase is low.
While the $A aims to maintain mature cow weight, the $A-L does not aim to limit the increase in mature cow weight as there is minimal cost incurred if the feed maintenance requirements of the female breeding herd increase as a result of selection decisions.
Higher EBVs indicate fewer calving difficulties in 2 year old heifers.
Higher EBVs indicate fewer calving difficulties in 2 year old heifers.
The Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1 – 9 scoring system for feet and leg structure:
• A score of 5 is ideal
• 4 and 6 show slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals. Any animal scoring 4 and 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program
• 3 and 7 shows greater variation, but would be acceptable in most commercial breeding programs, however seedstock producers should be wary
• 2 and 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked at carefully before purchasing
A 1 – 5 scoring system is used for sheath attachment. For feet and leg assessment, animals need to be on a hard, flat and even surface where animal can move/stand naturally.
TRAITS: Scoring range 1 – 9
Front Feet Claw Set 1 – open divergent; 5 – good; 9 – extreme scissor claw
Rear Feet Claw Set 1 – open divergent; 5 – good; 9 – extreme scissor claw

Carcoar weaners hit $1540
THE quality and condition of large lines of one-brand cattle was second to none in a record-breaking yarding of weaners at Central Tablelands Livestock Exchange, Carcoar, last Friday
Elders Emms Mooney livestock manager Ben Emms, Blayney, said there were 10,777 cattle sold and it "was an absolute magnificent yarding of calves".
Breaking down the sale results using Meat and Livestock Australia data, weaner steers less than 200kg sold from $585 to $855; the 200kg to 280kg pens made $775 to $1180, and those from 280kg to 330kg ranged from $1075 to $1320. Weaner steers heavier than 330kg sold from $1160 to $1540, ML A reported Weaner heifers up to 200kg mostly attracted bids from $500 to $700; most of the 200kg to 280kg pens made $620 to $1120; 280kg to 330kg heifers ranged from $760 to $1310, and any heifers weighing more than 330kg sold from $1115 to $1250.

CARING FOR YOUR NEW BULL
Always be considerate to your new bull/s and handle them with respect and kindness. Handle them quietly, walk them rather than rushing them, treat them with care and in a gentle manner and they will do likewise to you.
A bull leaving ‘Karoo’ is leaving the security of a large mob, and will arrive in a strange environment at the purchaser’s property. When the bull/s are unloaded it is recommended you have a steer or cow as a companion waiting for him in the yard.
Emms Mooney
A young bull can move in with older bulls and settle well, but remember, being the youngest, he will get the last of any feed available, because of the pecking order. The paddock needs to be reasonably large so he can keep away from the others and find adequate feed.
Young bulls are still growing fast and need enough feed to maintain their growth pattern.
‘Karoo’ bulls are used to being handled by stockmen with four wheel motorbikes, utes and dogs.

WHY USE YEARLINGS?
Cattle producers with experience in managing yearlings often say that they prefer them because they settle in better, mix with other cattle more easily and are easier to handle than older bulls.
However, there are some far more tangible incentives in using them. By first using bulls as yearlings, the working life of a bull can be extended by a year or more—a 25% increase. As a result, the purchase price and running costs of bulls can be spread over more calves. This reduces bull costs per calf and boosts profitability.
Yearling bulls also allow cattle breeders the opportunity to achieve faster rates of genetic improvement. This is due to the influence of what geneticist’s call ‘generation interval’, that is, the average age of parents when their calves are born. By using genetically superior bulls as young as possible, faster turnover rates of genes are achieved. Joining yearling bulls to yearling heifers can maximise genetic improvement by lowering generation intervals.
Yearling bulls are less costly to produce. Seedstock suppliers sell their bulls 6–12 months earlier, which simplifies their management and reduces overheads. In addition to these advantages, there is strong circumstantial evidence to suggest that bulls used first as yearlings have even longer working lives because of superior fitness and lower levels of body fat. The more active lives of these bulls means that they are maintained at body weights below their genetic
potential. As a result, less stress is placed on their skeletal structure when serving, with less likelihood of breakdowns occurring.
The two biggest causes of breakdowns in bulls are hip arthritis (over 50% of all wastage) and broken penis. It would appear that bulls used first as yearlings are less affected by these serious sources of economic loss.
The benefits of using yearling bulls include:
• Accelerated genetic gain within your herd
• Inbuilt soundness and longevity, as the bulls are young, keen, strong, lean and fit
• Can lower cost of production as they are proven to have longer working lives resulting in a lower cost per calf over time
• Can be easier to manage as are working instead of idle in a paddock and are then more ready to settle into a rest period
• Whilst working them can impact appearance, attention to post joining diet overcomes this and the bulls generally remain lean and fit for longer
• Lighter weights can also extend their use over heifers
• Being younger they are also more adaptable to their new environment
