Beyond that point we need to be sure that we understand that there is a sweet spot to genetic gain. And that more is not always best;
Thisgenetics.year
Wishing you all the best, Stu and Hap Halliday and family
– Excessive marbling may lead to less constitution, growth, muscle and type
WELCOME TO BEN NEVIS
The sweet spot will differ for everybody depending on their country, but for us we take the type of cow that thrives in our tough environment over winter and we splice in the latest genetics for carcase improvement that won’t compromise our cow herd. Then we test.
– More EMA may mean less fat and so on
This year’s bulls are a culmination of that testing of our cow herd, whether it be for pregnancy or their progeny’s temperament, growth or scans in large contemporaries. We then take the best cows and leverage their influence through ET. As a result we have a number of bulls that we feel are game changers- good looking bulls with herd improving
we celebrate 75 years – we would like to sincerely thank my Dad (the late Bruce Steel), and Mum Cherry for the legacy they have entrusted us with; a magnificent cow herd, a passion for the Angus breed and the value of hard work and integrity.
– More scrotal may lead to being too big and injuring themselves
– More milk may mean they don’t get back in calf
– Excessive growth may lead to not getting in calf, or not meeting market fat specs
Genetic profiles or EBVs are all about assurance for us. Assurance that our clients get to sleep at night when their heifers are calving, assurance that they will get their cows back in calf, assurance that they will feel safe and enjoy working their cattle and assurance that their cattle will be in the pocket to attract high demand for the premium markets.

1.Where:Thepurchaser claims a bull is infertile, upon purchaser submitting two x veterinary reports ten weeks apart stating the bull is infertile (semen) OR one x Veterinary Report stating the bull is incapable of natural service, and a Statutory Declaration by the purchaser to the effect that the substance of the report is true and correct. The Veterinarian must state that in their opinion there is no evidence that the bull has suffered any injury or illness (or infection) during the Warranty Period which could have affected his breeding ability. The Veterinary Report and the Statutory Declaration must be forwarded to the vendor within 14 days of the Warranty Period expiring.
On arrival at their new home it is important a suitable mob of animals is yarded to greet the bull to minimise stress. Suitable animals include pregnant cows, steers but certainly not other bulls. The bulls are in good working condition at the point of Sale, but it is imperative to ensure good nutrition for the bull during the joining Youperiod.should check bulls regularly to see that they are working, especially in the early stages when most problems occur and early intervention can minimise damage to the bull and conception rates. After joining, bulls should be drenched and placed on good pasture to get back in condition.

Our sale bulls include the very best we have to offer. To ensure genetic continuity in our stud herd and the testing of our bulls in our commercial herds via progeny tests we will retain semen access (rights) for specific bulls nominated throughout the catalogue with our brand in the Lot information. Lots showing this elite logo will require that Ben Nevis shall retain the right to collect up to 600 straws for our own use and in our progeny test (commercial only) herds. Ben Nevis will collect semen at the vendors expense and the purchasers convenience.
THIS YEAR'S BULLS QUALITY. DOCILITY. INTEGRITY.
The bulls are ready for immediate use and we recommend using a 12 –14 mo yearling at a rate of 1 bull to 35, and a 16 – 18 mo bull at usual rates of 1 to 50. All bulls have been tested PI (pestivirus) negative and vaccinated with 7-in-1 (Lepto), Pestiguard and Vibriosis. They have had regular doses of Vitamin A,D,E, Vitamin B12 and drenched with Eprinex Pour on and Fasinex Oral on June 20.
We take great pride in our reputation for quiet cattle. The bulls have been handled with bikes, dogs, horses and on foot. Under normal circumstances they are of sound temperament and we ask that you treat them with kindness and respect, especially under the pressures of sale day. HEALTH
We are renowned for the docility of our bulls and have a zero tolerance policy for those that aren’t. 79/ 81 of the bulls in this catalogue received the highest possible score for temperament from an accredited independent assessor with the other three receiving the second highest Wescore.have some exciting new sire lines in this year’s catalogue along with our favourites that we know work so well for people. Te Mania Pythagorus (who we purchased with Bulliac and Ardrossan) makes his debut with us this year and has made a big impression. He has a number of bigger framed, deep bodied sons in the sale with enormous genetic power and his daughters are really exciting. Musgrave Exclusive has also been a very welcome addition to our line-up adding great skin and natural thickness as we expected. We have some very special Millah Murrah Paratroopers who just ooze quality and then Baldridge Forecaster who we are delighted with as he transmits a great type, excellent head, extra stretch and IMF. Every bull in the catalogue has been Sire Verified with Genomically enhanced EBV’s and has been measured in large contemporary groups for BW, growth, carcase, frame, skin and structural traits. Roger Evans (Accreditation Number 1018) is our independent Assessor for structure and scanned carcase traits. These are all listed in the Lot Summary on pages 12 – 15. Of the 81 bulls available in this year’s sale there are fourty-seven Autumn drop 16 – 18 month old bulls and thirty-four Spring Drop 12 – 14 month old bulls. The two age groups are completely different contemporary groups and have been scanned at different times. They are inter-dispersed throughout the sale to allow buyers earlier access to the higher value bulls in both age groups. Having said that we have vigorously culled the bulls down from 200 plus animals to reach this number and we are proud of each and every one and commend them to you. There are a number of Stud Sire Options throughout the sale right down to the last two pens.

HEAD AND MUZZLE
STRONG SPINE
In all our sires we chase a strong spine coupled with a proportionately longer hip to pin ratio to fortify strength of spine and strength of loin. The most valuable cuts are along the spine and we want them to have the least work to stay tender and be supported. We have been extremely disappointed in the recent influx of swampy backed bulls, with short hip-pin and high tail set that seem popular in the States.
The perfect Angus head should be broad with good hooding to protect the eye and have a wide jaw and strong muzzle. The width of their jaw will be reflected in the width of their whole body structure which is especially important through the hips and pins for calving ease. As Bruce Steel used to say ‘the difference between a narrow and wide muzzle is like the difference between eating with a shovel or a teaspoon’.
TEMPERAMENT This is our single most important selection criteria where we have no room for compromise. Quieter cattle not only make life safer and more enjoyable but they have been proven better doers with better meat quality. The feedback we get from our clients regarding the good temperament of our cattle is something we are most proud of. Life is too short to deal with cranky cattle.
FLANK A deep flank (preferably one deeper than their girth) that ties deeper into the animal’s quarter is an indicator of doing ability and allows for a greater volume of muscle and weight in the hindquarter and stifle area.
TAIL SET Who cares? We do. After Stu working 15 years in the Dairy Industry as a vet, it became very obvious that the cows with their tail sets higher and more up their back were more prone to uterine infection as they were continually defecating into their vulva. On top of this, it comes hand-in-hand with a short hip to pin and swampy back and is found in harder doing animals.
6www.bennevisangus.com.au
We chase a good deep rib and body as an indicator of a cow’s constitution. These cows perform better for us during our harsh annual winters and droughts. As my Dad would explain they have a bigger vat and so can ruminate more efficiently.
BONE We prefer a flatter bone as an indicator of efficiency and tenderness. These are animals that do better on grass without the benefit of a grain diet. Rounder boned animals such as European breeds are higher yielding but have lower meat quality and are harder to fatten.
MUSCLE We go for volume of muscle consistent with an Angus type and avoid very heavily expressed muscle types as they are generally harder doers and tougher to eat. Volume of muscle comes with width and length but can be complemented with overall softness.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TYPE
SKIN You will often hear us talk about skin and it is one of the highestranking physical selection criteria we employ. We have measured and selected for it for years. Skin is an old timer’s indicator for beef quality and tenderness and is measured by us in two forms, with the finer the skin and the softer/finer the hair correlating highly with scanned IMF. Animals with the better skin types are also those that clean up and re-breed faster coming into Spring joining. Angus Australia is currently researching skin type and its implications. In the same way, extra skin along the throat indicates easy doing animals. DEPTH OF BODY
HIP TO PIN This is a key indicator for structural correctness. Animals should be proportionally longer from hip to pin and have a slight downward slope to facilitate calving ease. This reinforces the strength of the overall top line and gives the animal more balance. Too much slope is reflected by sickled hocks, low pasterns, and long feet while a shorter hip to pin combined with the pins being higher than the hip leads to even more debilitating conditions. These include a shallower, weaker loin with more pressure on the spine leading to smaller EMA and breakdown, straighter angles through the hocks and pasterns leading to injury and arthritis.
GOOD REIN This is one of our main physical selection traits. An animal with good type will have a naturally uplifted head and there is no better single measure of structure. A lifted head and long neck reflects a shoulder angle that will allow for calving ease and natural movement thus allowing longevity.
While we are utilising the latest BREEDPLAN and Genomics technologies to enhance the value of our beef under the hide you will often hear us talk about type. Before the advent of genetic evaluation, type was the main determinant (along with breed) to identify eating quality. These traits, while highly heritable, are subjective but they are a particularly important feature of our brand and give us an important edge in quality that we take great pride in. We believe type is just as important today as it was then to balance our breeding approach and ensure we do not lose those ‘hard to measure’ traits for which the Angus breed is famous. These include constitution, doing ability, structure and balance.
On bulls and females, long or course hairs anywhere under the udder/scrotum area, up through the escutcheon or flicking along the outer thighs indicate poor doers. The udder and the seat of their pants must be clean with wider spades (the hair going in the opposite direction) either side of the tail to result in better doing ability and easier milking.
FEET Not too big or too small with a claw and set score between 5 and 6. We applaud Angus Australia’s recent developments to simplify these scores and integrate the use of genomics. There have been many unsuitable bulls allowed into the country in the last 10-15 years and this is something we are committed to getting right and we score and cull our animals annually for feet.
CLEAN UDDER AND ESCHUTUEN, AND WIDE SPADES
7 Flank An indicator of doing ability Depth of Body Good, deep, rib and body are an indicator of an animal’s constitution Head and Muzzle Broad, good hooding to protect the eye, wide jaw and strong muzzle Skin An old timer’s indicator for beef quality tendernessand Strong Spine The most valuable cuts are along the spine Tail Set Higher/up the back –more prone to uterine infections in females Hip to Pin A key indicator for correctnessstructural Good Rein An animal with good structure will have a naturally uplifted head

1. Yearling bulls are out working while they are still relatively light and agile, so they are less likely to hurt themselves. Just as importantly, they are less likely to damage your valuable heifers or cows.
BANG FOR YOUR BUCK – YEARLINGS BULLS 8www.bennevisangus.com.au
2. Yearling Bulls fight less, so are less likely to get injured by accident or misfortune. Why? Well they are out working when they reach sexual maturity instead of being run with a mob of bulls to grow out to two years of age. As a result we believe they don’t learn the bullying and riding behaviour that often occurs in bull mobs from 18 – 24 months of age with sexual frustration. We get overwhelming feedback from our clients that the bulls used first as yearlings are easier to manage both in and out of the cows and in their bull mobs. Not everyone can produce yearling bulls as they need to be well grown and sexually mature when they first go out. This is our speciality and we have been growing and using yearling bulls for over 30 years.
GUIDELINES FOR USE
Bulls were meant to work as yearlings and research proves that they are one of the biggest bangs for your buck. Yearling bulls average a two year longer working life and 75 more calves on average than bulls sold first as two year olds. WHY?
Don’t put him out in group joining with older bulls for his first joining. Join him either on his own or with a group of yearlings.
For all enquiries, questions or problems, please call Stu on 0417 674 412.
THERE IS ONLY ONE RULE
Join him with up to 35 head or at 3% in the first year and up normally thereafter. That first 35 head will be a bonus for you plus the other calves he gets from a longer working life. He will look his worst after the first joining as he has been working and growing at the same time but don’t worry his sex life won’t kill him and as long as you put him in a good paddock and treat him for pests and disease he will eventually grow out to be the dashing bull he was born to be.

When you go into a paddock and a sire line looks like they have been in a feedlot compared to the rest of the paddock for four years in a row- you know they are special and they are honest. We used Beast Mode over our bigger cows and it has been a deal clincher. They are deep ribbed, easy doing, quiet and structurally correct. He is a break-though bull for us and our clients have been delighted with them.
BEN NEVIS PODIUM Podium is the maternal brother to the $70,000 Ben Nevis Rambo and we kept him as a walking sire for the stud. His progeny are standouts –they have exceptional muscularity often with bulls and steers ending up with a B muscle score. He has a beautiful nature, strong spine and transmits both carcase and maternal excellence. Unfortunately we lost him in an accident earlier this year so we value the progeny we have. We used Fireball over thicker cows to blend in IMF. He is known as the good looking IMF bull and his fan base has increased from there because he is an outcross. Fireballs are very quiet and we have a number of cracking sons in the sale. He works particularly well with Beast Mode daughters.
We saw a video of Exclusive and were sold once we saw his skin like mercury, and his combination of natural thickness, softness and mobility. We appreciate the commitment that the Musgrave has made to quality and structural integrity. His sons are some of the standouts in the sale.
BEN NEVIS MONARCH
The hype around Paratrooper is real. He comes from one of the best cow herds in the country and he does them proud. His progeny are highly sought after because of their expressive muscle pattern, skin, structural correctness and temperament.
We invested in Pythathorus with good friends Rob Bulle from Ardrossan and Ben Hill from Bulliac. We were all looking for a sire to boost marbling that was free of Berkley and Regent bloodlines. Pythagorus has exceeded our expectations producing bigger framed, deep bodied progeny that have scanned for IMF true to their potential. Pythagorus also adds depth of heel and a very docile nature.
With all the bulls we use we make sure they are backed by a special cow family that is highly regarded. This explains why 70% of our catalogue has a maternal grandsire that goes back to our own stable because it’s not only about quality, but consistency.
BALDRIDGE FORECASTER Forecaster is from a trusted stable for us in the Baldridge herd. We love best the way he stamps a good, masculine head on his bull calves giving them a real sire presence with a freaky length of body. They are exceptionally stylish calves and the female progeny are exceptional. The bonus with this bull is the extra IMF he transmits.
MUSGRAVE EXCLUSIVE
BEN NEVIS METAMORPHIC BEN NEVIS PODIUM EXCLUSIVE
BEN NEVIS METAMORPHIC Metamorphic sold for $32,000 for us in 2017 to a syndicate including Banquet, Fernleigh and Twin Oaks and has created sale toppers for them and other herds both here in Australia and New Zealand. He produces extra muscularity and proud outlooks as well as fine skins on his progeny with the influence of Bartel’s carcase under the hide.
Monarch topped the IMF scanning during his bull sale year and we kept him to use in the herd. He was so easy fleshing that it got to the point that we would have to lock him up in a bare yards for a month pre joining so he wouldn’t get too fat. Despite heavy use both in our stud and commercial herd Monarch grew to over 1200kgs. He is a B muscle, slick coated bull of the most impeccable nature. Genomics has credited most of his sons with more growth and IMF than his own EBVs which we are grateful for. He represents the very best of our Ben Nevis bloodlines.

“The purchase of Ben Nevis heifers was the start of our venture into the Angus breed. We’ve been incredibly happy with their performance as breeders, especially in regards to fertility and mobility in Western Qld. We wish you the best of luck in this years’ sale and look forward to continuing to work with you in the future.” family – Bassett Cattle Co

Another heavy hitter, and second heaviest weight gain bull we have ever produced. The strength of our dam lines really starts to shine through here with the dam of Sultan being the Granddam of Samurai (Lot 3). He is a bull you need to get over the top of and behind to really appreciate his bulging muscle and huge top which is softened by a superfine, silky skin and coat. He is chock full of the finest quality and it’s no surprise he scanned the second highest IMF. This is a breed changing bull and we are super proud of the genetic combination of Ben Nevis blood he derives from. His Sire sold for $30,000 at 2018 for Bannaby and has since.

BEN NEVIS STETSON S013SV
We have a very showy Prime son here in the mould of the previous lot displaying extra length of body and combining carcase attributes with the ability to transmit maternal strength. Stetson brings back the desirable strength of top and length from hip to pin. With the strength of his Donor Granddam and his calving ease attributes he would create a magnificent female base for you . He is the second easiest doing bull in the draft. Suitable for Heifers.

It’s pretty hard not to be impressed by Sorrento. He is a big framed, upstanding young sire and would be ideal for putting thump back into your herd. He is a big bull but a soft depth bull with loose skin, real dimension to his rib, depth of flank and deep through his quarter. He has the loveliest, gentle nature and just glides on the move.

You shouldn’t be surprised to see Donor Dams on both sides of Statesman’s pedigree with his Grandam H103 making the Ben Nevis Hall of Fame and selling to Brett Thomson at our cow sale for $26,0000 with over $100,000 in progeny sales. In the flesh he is a long bodied, upstanding young sire who is the very picture of his Sire the $32k Ben Nevis Prime who is at stud at Bannaby Angus. Bruce had a mild heart attack late last year and today was the first day he has helped with the stock. We took the bulls out after their nine weeks with the cows. They walked past Bruce into a yard ... no fighting ... stood or grazed until the cows were taken away. Bruce was so confident when we finished... such a relief for me ... he realised it was so easy. Then they just meandered off to their paddock. So just wanted to say a big thank you to all at Ben Nevis for the effort you put into your bulls temperament as well as the genetics.”

“Just a thank you for the production of such lovely quiet bulls. A delight to handle.
NOTE AGE DIFFERENCE: these bulls are on average six months younger than Lots 1 – 27 (Autumn drop bulls). They are well grown yearling bulls who are ready to work, semen tested, vet inspected and structurally assessed. Just because he is a yearling doesn't make him a heifer bull, so please continue to check for our recommendations. All of the bulls in the yearling section received a one for temperament which is the highest score they can get independently assessed by Roger Evans (Accreditation No 1018). We are very proud of this draft and welcome your inspection.
Cheers Dee Brierley

All the yearlings were treated the same and then Sumo swaggers in and blitzes them all. He has all the rugged good looks of a movie star and with his tremendous butt shape, width of stifle and hip, a huge top and bold rib he could take The Rocks place. His performance on paper proves he is a standout posting the highest ADG, biggest EMA and highest IMF. How many other bulls in the breed can do this and then post top 1% for both angle and claw and top 3% for indexes? He's a dude, and a star and surprise, surprise his Grandam was one of our favourite donors. Bulls like him don't come along very often-he is the real deal – don't miss him. Suitable for heifers.

This is a very exciting run of yearling bulls and we wanted to start it strongly and who better than Scorcher. He is a stylish and powerful young sire whose genetic pre-potency is demonstrated by the three generations of Donor dams in his pedigree on both sides and the strength of this particular flush. Scorcher has all the quality attributes of his other ET brothers in Lots 21, 35, 43 and 70 with extra strength in his EBV set. He is super soft, super quiet and oozes quality. Undeniably good. His mother is the most beautiful Angus cow and like him she is big but also like him she is soft and exquisitely put together with a gentle nature. The first of our Paratroopers to sell and what a quality animal he is. Paratrooper stamps his progeny with a thick, soft top and an expressive hindquarter. Quality oozes out of this young bull from his fine silky coat and soft skin to his beautiful head. He complements this with an exceptional set of arithmetic and backs it up with his performance in the contemporary being the highest scanning IMF and easiest doing. He is a first calf heifer's magnificent effort and he is unique.

The most potential of any bull in the sale in my opinion – a standout from birth with his classic sires head, broad muzzle and jaw and proud carriage. It's almost like he has an extra rib or two and he is as long as a wet weak with a strong spine. He is beautifully balanced as he maintains good length from hip to pin and down to a deep flank and quarter. Really he is extraordinary. In the cases of these true yearlings you do have to crystal ball a bit and he, and the Lot 29 bull I feel will be out of this world. They are slightly later maturing so we expect them to develop even more as they grow. He has three donors in his cow side with his Grandam being the dam of Lots 5, 58 and 66, and the Granddam of Lot 3. He was the second top IMF scan and the second easiest doing bull in the contemporary. Stone-axe is a clean-fronted, long bodied bull that ties deep in his quarter and runs his muscle right to the hock. This is a trait of easier doing cattle as is his fine skin. He has a small lump under his chin where we have treated him for a grass seed infection but it has been of no detriment to him. He is a second calf and his dam's first calf sold for $18,000 at last year's sale. He is very quiet. Suitable for heifers.
BEN NEVIS SPOTLIGHT S297PV Spotlight has been well named because he deserves to be in lights. He is pure quality, balance and style and a fitter would probably throw a halter on him to take to a show. He's just got fifty million ticks on every evaluation review we have done on the mob with always the following scribbled on the side notes – 'meaty' 'wow' 'chunky monkey' and so on. His dam and Granddam are both donors and his dam is a maternal sister to the $70,000 Ben Nevis Rambo from our 2021 sale that sold to Glenmorgan, Banquet, Koojan Hills and Fernleigh. His grandma sold to Boambee Angus for $15,000 in 2020 and has amassed sales for us in excess of $100,000 and has produced two stud Podium who features in this and Rambo who will.

Metamorphic adds a proud sire’s head to him and he has a fine, slick coat and depth of flank and length of quarter that gives him balance with a healthy volume of muscle. This guy always gets picked out when people visit. He is pretty easy to like being super thick and showy. His pedigree crosses two of our favourite donors in M72 and J121. His dam is a full sister to the awesome Lot 2 bull Ben Nevis Shrek, and is a Donor in her own right, and his sire is the maternal brother to the $70,000 Ben Nevis Rambo. He is a classic curve bender and it’s no surprise looking at his butterfly top and huge hindquarter that he ranks in the top 10% of the breed for Eye Muscle Area and the in the top 2% for his Breeding $ Index. Suitable for heifers.
We just love how much constitution and doing ability that Newsflash puts into his progeny and Lot 3 and 54 are both testament to that with them both getting fat on the smell of an oily rag. We love that. Signet is a really balanced, neat and tidy package that is thick right though from the width of his hindquarter through to behind the shoulder. He is safe to use over heifers and will transmit that quality and extra IMF to your herd. Check out the picture of his dam online –she is perfect. Suitable for heifers. What an attractive bull Scooby is, we just love his proud outlook and his thumping square hindquarter and man can he get about. He gets his massive girth and body depth from his Donor Dam (check her picture out on Angus Tech) and despite his expressive muscle pattern he shows plenty of softness where he lets down in the flank and twist. Great set of EBVs and a unique outcross pedigree. Suitable for heifers.

Simply downright the quietest bull in the whole draft and such a laid back dude. He often lies down while waiting for his turn to go up the race and Mags sits on him without him batting an eyelid. We introduced the Wilcoola bloodlines into our herd and both his dam and grandma have well and earned their place in the Donor pen. He is long but holds a good chunk of it from hip to pin giving his extra balance. His expressive top and hindquarter will blend well with the maternal strength he will pass on. His maternal brother P412 is one of our walking stud sires. Suitable for heifers.

In testing all our remaining young cows after our mature cow dispersal there was always going to be some fallout where we were unable to prove maternal parentage because the dams had since died. This is one of those cases but we felt Sepulchre was too good a bull to leave out of the sale. He is an eye-catching young bull with plenty of shape, depth and volume and with his shape and EBV's would be suitable for heifers.
Sanctum displays the fine, soft skin we strive for. Not only do animals that have it scan higher for IMF but those females who have it are the first to clean up and re-breed. It was an old times trait for doing ability. He has huge potential with extra length, especially in the hip to pin area which gives him overall balance. Scanning the third highest for IMF in his contemporary Sanctum is a quality bull for cows to inject growth, IMF and good temperament.

TACE analyses are conducted by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI), using beef genetic evaluation software developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England, and Meat and Livestock Australia Limited (MLA).
For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10kg heavier at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40kg (ie. 20kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics). Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (ie. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and a historical genetic level (ie. group of animals) within the TACE genetic evaluation, and are reported in the units in which the measurements are taken.

TACE includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and New Zealand Angus Association databases to evaluate the genetics of animals across Australia and New Zealand.
DESCRIPTION OF TACE EBVS: EBVs are calculated for a range of traits within TACE, covering calving ease, growth, fertility, maternal performance, carcase merit, feed efficiency and structural soundness. A description of each EBV included in this catalogue is available at www.angusaustralia.com.au
TACE EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected difference equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (eg. they are joined to the same animal/s).
WHAT IS THE TRANSTASMAN ANGUS CATTLE EVALUATION?
TACE uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (eg. weight, carcase, fertility).
CONSIDERING ACCURACY: An accuracy value is published with each EBV, and is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBVsEBV. with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50 – 74% as of medium accuracy, 75 – 90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy.
USING EBVS TO COMPARE THE GENETICS OF TWO ANIMALS:
The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE) is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus infused beef cattle.
* The percentile bands represent the distribution of EBVs across the 2019 drop Australian Angus and Angus-influenced seedstock animals analysed in the August 2021 TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation .
USING EBVS TO BENCHMARK AN ANIMAL’S GENETICS: EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus/Angus infused animals in Australia and New Zealand. To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to the EBV reference tables, which provide: • the breed average EBV • the percentile bands table The current breed average EBV is listed on the bottom of each page in this publication, while the current EBV reference tables are included at the end of these introductory notes. For easy reference, the percentile band in which an animal’s EBV ranks is also published in association with the EBV.
UNDERSTANDING THE TRANSTASMAN ANGUS CATTLE EVALUATION TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation – August 2022 Reference Tables
WHAT IS AN EBV? An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).

Erica and Stuart Halliday, Ben Nevis Angus, Walcha, experienced similar doubts after reading a book suggest ed by "a mate" called From Dirt to Soil, written by North Dakota farmer Gabe Brown on how he turned his farming systems around to one of regenerative agriculture. But they say the proof is in the paddock after trialling the methods during four growing seasons The backstory to the Halliday's soil renewal trials emerged from the 2019 drought. They decided to run 600 of their cows in confinement feeding pens for efficiency and economy. Each pen was about two hectares and held 200 cows, and they were fed canola hay. The result was three small, bare pad docks that were compacted and high levels of manure and urine They decided to test the recipe in Gabe Brown's book to grow, rebuild and improve the quality of the soils in those two hectare pens All three pens were given an initial knockdown spray of Roundup to combat weeds after the drought. For two-and-a-half years, they then rotated through cover crop mixtures of winter and summer species mixes where cattle would be crash-grazed onto the feed, consuming one-third, knocking down or trampling once-third and leaving a third remaining. "So basically that mulch litter would eventually become humus and eventually become soil," Ms Halliday said. "And at the same time, we would grow microbes, grow carbon organic matter and have this magical soil that looks like chocolate cake They planted all three pens with multi-species cover crops and, at the end of the winter-growing period, went straight in and planted a summer species mix. Of the two plots with no spray pre-planting, one had an application of synthetic fertiliser, while the third had just vermicast (worm cast ings) and cow manure. They ran the same stock rates in all three plots in high-density grazing for the same stock days per hectare. In the third pen, a traditional industrial agriculture method was employed, where it was sprayed out with a knock-down of glyphosate before the multi-species mix was planted each time The results were remark able for the plots where no spray was used "Basically, the NPK (nitrogen, potassium and phos phorus) were the same, and organic matter was about four per cent," she said. "The soil in both those instances looked pretty good It had become a rich, dark colour and quite friable Interestingly the one using only vermicast and cow ma nure had 38 per cent more microbes and a desirable 1:1 fungi to bacteria ratio, while the others were bacterially dominant. "The third plot still looks like white chalk, and these three sites are just 50 metres from each other Their agronomist, Gary Littlejohns from AMPS, created the two seasonal seed mixes
THERE is a saying when an opportunity presents itself, and you're not sure of the outcome: "if it's too good to be true, then it's too good to be true".

The costs of the three trial plots also were clearly defined Plot three using the glyphosate and synthetic fertilisers was $428/ha, the plot with no spray and synthetic fertiliser was $371/ha, and the plot with a no-spray with organic worm vermicast and cow manure regime was $263/ha Cow manure was from a feedlot on the Liverpool Plains, and while relatively cheap at $16/tonne, the freight cost was $39/t to transport it to the Walcha district Ms Halliday said they are working with a company called Multikraft which is trialling the use of probiotics on manure to break it down quickly and have a nutrient value ratio of 1:3 for the volume of product This would be a breakthrough if successful as it would dramatically reduce the volume of the product needed at the time of application, she said. She said a disturbing rev elation with the plot that has had the five applications of Roundup is that it has mini mal microbial activity. "So with all the rain we've had, it's got pools of water everywhere and low oxygen levels in the soil. The soil is still compacted, and there's no water cycling through the soil. She said the soil microbe population in the three plots also varied dramatically.

The winter mix includes rye corn, a deep-rooted species, ryegrass, tillage radish, turnips, hairy vetch and oats In the summer mix, there are sunflowers, safflower, millet, buckwheat and a mixture of vetch and clovers Ms Halliday said pasture surveys had noted that plantain and chic ory were growing well, but this seed was not in the mix and was volunteering from another source Trials with mobs of bulls on the multi-species mixes compared with straight forage oats also revealed pleas ing results "We measured how the bulls were doing on the multi-species mixes as opposed to straight oats, and the bulls did 200 grams a day better on the multi-species, and we had fewer incidents of pinkeye and foot abscess. The Hallidays also meas ured microbial balance and microbial levels between the plots. The plots that didn't have any spray had higher microbial populations

"At the moment, there are no differences between them There's no difference in the amount of feed grown, but one's cheaper than the other "I think when we go and measure the microbes in that paddock as well, we'll prob ably have a higher microbial load, and we'll be better off with a system where the mi crobes feed the plants as opposed to us directly feeding them at a higher cost "It sounds too good to be true I know. We thought, well bugger this, we're going to do our trials, and so you know, it's not like we're scientists or anything like that, and these are the results we've measured."

IF YOU think nights have felt a little chilly across NSW this week, you're not wrong. Some places across the state just shivered through their lowest June tempera tures on record. The combination of a cold and dry air mass with rela tively clear skies and light winds provided the ideal conditions for substantial overnight cooling in NSW earlier this week While there were several nights with widespread frost this week, the lowest temperatures in many areas were observed on Tuesday morning. Goulburn Airport's low of -7.5 degrees Celsius early on Tuesday morning was the sites lowest June tempera ture in 18 years Further west, Hillston's -4.0degC on the same morning was its lowest June tem perature in records dating back to 1957. On Wednesday morning, Merimbula dipped to 0degC for the first time in June since 2004. Increased cloud cover on Wednesday night into Thursday morning helped keep temperatures a bit higher across most of the state, which limited the development of frost. The arrival of this cloud will now shift the focus from frost to rain in some parts of NSW. A few light showers will develop over southern NSW on Thursday, before heavier and more widespread rain forms over parts of central and eastern NSW from Friday into the weekend. There are growing signs that a deepening coastal trough or low pressure sys tem could produce heavy rain across some areas of eastern NSW this weekend. This could possibly spread into the beginning of next week as well. The prospect of a deepening low pressure system also brings the risk of damaging winds and damaging surf along the coast later this week and early into the next week While the heaviest rain from this next system is likely to fall on and east of the ranges, where multi-day totals could exceed 100 millimetres, there should also be around 10mm to 30mm over parts of the state's central inland between Friday and Monday. ■ Ben Domensino is a meteorologist at Weatherzone.

We have a policy of working with people who are professional but also great fun. This is especially the case with our agents Miles ‘have a chat” “green tree” Archdale, and the gang at Nutrien Boultons and EspeciallyStudstock.I’d like to thank Megan Scrivener our graphic designer who is so good everyone is cottoning on and trying to steal her, she is clever, clever, clever and a good friend. To Benny the Bull and the guys from OGA who tell our story so well. To the people who look after us during the year so the wheels don’t fall off – Roger Evans, Geoff Steinbeck, Alex Steinbeck, Chris Hallet (genius), Roger Van, Chook and Jen, Frater, Jo, Jen, Coleen, Lionel, Dorro – you are all the people we choose to hang with and life is so much better as a result. A special mention to my sister and Mum who do so much work behind the scenes – we’d be lost without you. Jack and Mags, you have both stepped up and been awesome and have gone above and beyond – we are proud that you love this place as much as we do and of your work ethic, how did you both get so bossy like your father?? . Lastly Hamish – you continue to grow and your work ethic, determination and resilience are so much bigger than your 6 foot 4 frame. We are very grateful to you – thanks.

Chook grew up on a cattle and farming property in the South Burnett region of Queensland before spending the next eight years training performance horses for a variety of events. North West Queensland was home for the next seven years in a number of roles – from stock camps where helicopter mustering was a weekly occurrence, through to managing large mobs in intensive cell grazing operations. Walcha is now home, where he runs sheep and cattle.
