Front Cover: Stud Sire Ben Nevis Monarch M128 Monarch has six sons in the sale. BREEDPLAN hasn’t rated him for NFI and growth but we do. It’s hard to keep the weight off him and he is now over 1200kgs. We often have to lock him up with the horses to slim him down before he goes to work. That’s our type of bull!

WELCOME TO BEN NEVIS PHONE AND ONLINE BIDDING
While hard to reconcile at the time, the tough challenges in life enhance our ability to recognise and fully appreciate the good. They also make you get off your butt and make those forward thinking decisions that you may have been too comfortable to make in the past.
At time of print there is a possibility that the sale may have to be virtual due to COVID restrictions. If that is the case you are in safe hands. We go the extra mile to gather photos, videos, structural data, scanning data, weights, frames, scrotals and temperament on every bull which will be posted on our website and on AuctionsPlus. If you need to see his left nostril we’ve got it covered and we are more than happy to get extra footage or answer any questions. So call us, the boys from Boulton's or John Setree (numbers on Page 1) for any questions, extra footage or phone bidding. The sale will be streamed live via AuctionsPlus and interfaced online. The Lots will be sold in sequential order just as they would at a live event, go to Page 52 for the easy to understand instructions from AuctionsPlus on how to register and bid, or talk to your local agent to help you.
Genetically speaking one of these decisions for us was to invest heavily in ET from our unique Ben Nevis bloodlines and to have our inaugural mature female dispersal. Not only did this offer us an opportunity to have our genetics recognised at the highest level, but it has dramatically shortened our genetic interval, delivering an exciting herd of young blood females whose first batch of sons we will proudly present at this sale. This year’s bulls are slightly younger than our previous years and target the lucrative Jap B3 and branded beef trades. They offer the thump, softness and type we have always strived for whilst locking in extra performance under the hide. As always we strive to make them a pleasure for you to own.
Private inspections if permissible are also invited pre sale day. Just give us a call to arrange
It has been a cold, wet winter in the New England, but the bulls present well and are strong, fit and are ready to work. Over 2/3 of the draft are suitable for heifers. They will be sold with 18 month bulls to start, followed by the 12 month bulls.
COVID SAFE If the sale is able to be physically held we will welcome you with a big smile. We assure you we are a COVID safe venue. Sale Day Check in on your phone can be done by scanning the COVID Code below left or at the venue on the day.
The sale really restarts for us at the 12 month bulls. They are quite an exquisite bunch offering proven and hard to get Beast Mode bloodlines plus our own unique genetics which have proven so popular in the past. Wishing you all the best, Stu and Hap Halliday and family

THIS YEAR'S BULLS THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO INVEST IN QUALITY THE BULLS
that it performed in a commensurate way within its contemporary. Please note raw data is only useful within a contemporary group, you cannot compare raw data between herds or animals within herd that have been treated differently. In our sale there are two contemporary groups – the 12mo old bulls and the 18 mo old bulls. When looking at their raw data you cannot compare the two groups.
We are very proud of this year's bulls. Every one has been Sire Verified and has Genomically enhanced EBV’s that more accurately reflect their breeding value and give you greater confidence and choice than ever before. Given our commitment to type, we feel very positive about our direction and the value that we can add to our clients’ herds.
WHY SCANNING?
There will be twenty seven 18 month old bulls and forty seven 12 month old bulls in the catalogue. The 18 month old bulls will be sold first. There are a number of stud prospects in the sale. Please remember when looking at the raw scan and weight data that the 18mo and the 12mo old are different contemporary groups and have been colour coded accordingly in the EBV Summary.
Scanning is the most commercially viable and time effective way to measure carcase traits because you don’t have to kill the animal to get it, and it’s easily measured when they are yearlings and in good enough condition. In animals with more than 6mls of fat the correlation between scanned and actual traits is 0.7. This is meaningful and very useful.
As always, we have kept semen on a number of bulls to progeny test in our commercial herd. We guarantee the bulls and they have been rigorously culled them for temperament and feet. Structure and temperament scores as well as Ultrasound Carcase Scanning on the boys was independently assessed by Roger Evans Bovine Scanning Services (Accreditation No – 1018) on 6 August 2021.
In heifers this fat level is usually achieved at scanning but in young bulls this isn’t the case where fat levels are often less than 6mls, there correlation of scanned to real traits drops to 0.4. The issue here is that many bulls when they are scanned don’t have enough fat on them to scan so they have not yet triggered marbling and the differences are not evident. This is not the case with our yearling bulls as most average over 6mls of fat.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF BULLS All bulls have passed a semen test and physical examination by Dr Chris Hallet, Coolah Veterinary Clinic including; – – – – –
Age is another trigger for marbling. We scan at 10 – 12 months and are aware there are some bulls that will marble later on but it has not yet been triggered. However we are targeting the ones who express marbling earlier as well as the actual levels of marbling they achieve. These will be the animals who, in the future, will reach their targets more quickly and reduce costs while increasing turnover. We consider this very valuable information as we aggressively target the premium high marbling markets.
Semen motility Palpation of internal genitalia Palpation of Scrotal contents Visual inspection of overall structure, including feet Visual inspection of locomotive ability.
MANAGEMENT We take great pride in our established reputation for quiet cattle. These yearling bulls have had consistent contact with humans and dogs since weaning.
Sale Lots 1 – 27 were scanned on 18 June 2021 and Lots 28 – 73 on 6 August 2021.
PREPARATION
The bulls have been handled with dogs, horses, utilities, ATVs and on foot. We know each bull’s temperament and are confident that under normal circumstances they are of sound temperament. However, they are still animals and we ask that you treat them kindly and with respect, especially on Sale day with the pressures of new people invading their space.
The bulls were early weaned using the innovative AIM protocol at five months of age to foster rumen development and allow the cows to fatten up pre-winter. They have been on mixed cover-crops and have been supplemented with Ridley Grower Pellets and lucerne hay at times as we have had a long, wet, snowy winter with some pasture pugging. They present at their genetic potential and are fit, strong and ready for work.
HEALTH The bulls are ready for immediate use and we recommend using a yearling bull at a rate of 1 to 35 cows in their first year and 1 to 50 for every year after.
BLOODING We are happy to blood bulls and give three day vaccine for bulls sold to Queensland, and will work in with you for the best delivery time so they adapt.
All bulls have been tested PI (pestivirus) negative and vaccinated with 7 in 1 (Lepto), Pestiguard and Vibriosis. They have had regular doses of Vitamin A, D, E, Vitamin B12 and drenched with Eprinex pour-on and Fasinex Oral on 20 June 2021.
WHY RAW DATA? The academic purists get upset when we include raw data. Our logic is this – When everything is treated the same it is important to us which ones do the best especially for IMF and growth. This is, after all, the basis of BREEDPLAN. Practically speaking if an animal says it is in the top 5% of the breed for IMF EBV we like to check

After joining, bulls should be drenched and placed on good pasture to get back into good condition.
INSURANCE Bulls are like any other piece of valuable farm equipment and it’s wise to insure them, especially for the first six months of their working life. There are a number of options available through CGU and WFI at the Sale venue.

MINGARY SALE COMPLEX
THE IMPORTANCE OF TYPE SKIN
While we are utilising the latest BREEDPLAN and Genomics technologies to enhance the value of our beef under the hide you will often hear us talk about type.
You will often hear us talk about skin and it is one of the highestranking physical selection criteria we employ. We have measured and selected for it for years. Skin is an old timer’s indicator for beef quality and tenderness and is measured by us in two forms, with the finer the skin and the softer/finer the hair correlating highly with scanned IMF. Animals with the better skin types are also those that clean up and re-breed faster coming into Spring joining. Angus Australia is currently researching skin type and its implications. In the same way, extra skin along the throat indicates easy doing animals.
Before the advent of genetic evaluation, type was the main determinant (along with breed) to identify eating quality. These traits, while highly heritable, are subjective but they are a particularly important feature of our brand and give us an important edge in quality that we take great pride in. We believe type is just as important today as it was then to balance our breeding approach and ensure we do not lose those ‘hard to measure’ traits for which the Angus breed is famous. These include constitution, doing ability, structure and balance.
DEPTH OF BODY
HEAD AND MUZZLE
We chase a good deep rib and body as an indicator of a cow’s constitution. These cows perform better for us during our harsh annual winters and droughts. As my Dad would explain they have a bigger vat and so can ruminate more efficiently.
The perfect Angus head should be broad with good hooding to protect the eye and have a wide jaw and strong muzzle. The width of their jaw will be reflected in the width of their whole body structure which is especially important through the hips and pins for calving ease. As Bruce Steel used to say ‘the difference between a narrow and wide muzzle is like the difference between eating with a shovel or a teaspoon’.
CLEAN UDDER AND ESCHUTUEN, AND WIDE SPADES On bulls and females, long or course hairs anywhere under the udder/scrotum area, up through the escutcheon or flicking along the outer thighs indicate poor doers. The udder and the seat of their pants must be clean with wider spades (the hair going in the opposite direction) either side of the tail to result in better doing ability and easier milking.
GOOD REIN This is one of our main physical selection traits. An animal with good type will have a naturally uplifted head and there is no better single measure of structure. A lifted head and long neck reflects a shoulder angle that will allow for calving ease and natural movement thus allowing longevity.
FLANK A deep flank (preferably one deeper than their girth) that ties deeper into the animal’s quarter is an indicator of doing ability and allows for a greater volume of muscle and weight in the hindquarter and stifle area.
STRONG SPINE In all our sires we chase a strong spine coupled with a proportionately longer hip to pin ratio to fortify strength of spine and strength of loin. The most valuable cuts are along the spine and we want them to have the least work to stay tender and be supported. We have been extremely disappointed in the recent influx of swampy backed bulls, with short hip-pin and high tail set that seem popular in the States.
BONE We prefer a flatter bone as an indicator of efficiency and tenderness. These are animals that do better on grass without the benefit of a grain diet. Rounder boned animals such as European breeds are higher yielding but have lower meat quality and are harder to fatten.
HIP TO PIN
FEET
This is a key indicator for structural correctness. Animals should be proportionally longer from hip to pin and have a slight downward slope to facilitate calving ease. This reinforces the strength of the overall top line and gives the animal more balance. Too much slope is reflected by sickled hocks, low pasterns, and long feet while a shorter hip to pin combined with the pins being higher than the hip leads to even more debilitating conditions. These include a shallower, weaker loin with more pressure on the spine leading to smaller EMA and breakdown, straighter angles through the hocks and pasterns leading to injury and arthritis.
Not too big or too small with a claw and set score between 5 and 6. We applaud Angus Australia’s recent developments to simplify these scores and integrate the use of genomics. There have been many unsuitable bulls allowed into the country in the last 10-15 years and this is something we are committed to getting right and we score and cull our animals annually for feet.
MUSCLE We go for volume of muscle consistent with an Angus type and avoid very heavily expressed muscle types as they are generally harder doers and tougher to eat. Volume of muscle comes with width and length but can be complemented with overall softness.
TAIL SET Who cares? We do. After Stu working 15 years in the Dairy Industry as a vet, it became very obvious that the cows with their tail sets higher and more up their back were more prone to uterine infection as they were continually defecating into their vulva. On top of this, it comes hand-in-hand with a short hip to pin and swampy back and is found in harder doing animals.
www.bennevisangus.com.au
TEMPERAMENT This is our single most important selection criteria where we have no room for compromise. Quieter cattle not only make life safer and more enjoyable but they have been proven better doers with better meat quality. The feedback we get from our clients regarding the good temperament of our cattle is something we are most proud of. Life is too short to deal with cranky cattle.

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK – YEARLINGS BULLS GUIDELINES FOR USE
Bulls were meant to work as yearlings and research proves that they are one of the biggest bangs for your buck with yearling bulls, averaging a two year longer working life and 75 more calves on average than bulls sold first as two year olds.
Join him with up to 35 head or at 3% in the first year and up normally thereafter. That first 35 head will be a bonus for you plus the other calves he gets from a longer working life. He will look his worst after the first joining as he has been working and growing at the same time but don’t worry his sex life won’t kill him and as long as you put him in a good paddock and treat him for pests and disease he will eventually grow out to be the dashing bull he was born to be.
WHY? 1. Yearling bulls are out working while they are still relatively light and agile, so they are less likely to hurt themselves. Just as importantly, they are less likely to damage your valuable heifers or cows. 2. Yearling Bulls fight less, so are less likely to get injured by accident or misfortune. Why? Well they are out working when they reach sexual maturity instead of being run with a mob of bulls to grow out to two years of age. As a result we believe they don’t learn the bullying and riding behaviour that often occurs in bull mobs from 18 – 24 months of age with sexual frustration. We get overwhelming feedback from our clients that the bulls used first as yearlings are easier to manage both in and out of the cows and in their bull mobs.
THERE IS ONLY ONE RULE Don’t put him out in group joining with older bulls for his first joining. Join him either on his own or with a group of yearlings. For all enquiries, questions or problems, please call Stu on 0417 674 412.
Not everyone can produce yearling bulls as they need to be well grown and sexually mature when they first go out. This is our speciality and we have been growing and using yearling bulls for over 30 years.
“The purchase of Ben Nevis heifers was the start of our venture into the Angus breed. We’ve been incredibly happy with their performance as breeders, especially in regards to fertility and mobility in Western Qld. We wish you the best of luck in this years’ sale and look forward to continuing to work with you in the future.” Bassett family – Bassett Cattle Co

USING EBV PERCENTILES Selecting the right bull for your business needs to be as easy as possible. So we have incorporated percentiles into our catalogue as an extra tool to help you. A percentile value allows you to see where an animal sits in the breed for each trait. This gives you more information that an EBV figure alone. For example, if an animal sits in the 30th percentile for IMF it means it is in the top 30% of the breed. But, if an animal sits in the 80th percentile it means that 80% of animals are better than it. Generally the lower the percentile figure the better, except in the case of some traits where moderation or balance is preferred like Mature Cow Weight and Scrotal Size (can be too big), or BW (too small and frail at birth). BEN NEVIS KEVIN
The 600 day weight of this bull sits in the 80th percentile, meaning 80% of animals are better than him for the trait.

REFERENCE SIRES With all the bulls we use we make sure they are backed by a special cow family that is highly regarded. This explains why 70% of our catalogue has a maternal grandsire that goes back to our own stable because it’s not only about quality, but consistency. BALDRIDGE BEAST MODE Beast Modes dam Baldridge Isabel is a powerhouse and it’s from her that he inherits his volume, depth of rib and proud front end while from his sire GAR Prophet he inherits his carcase characteristics. The Beast Mode progeny are quiet, freakily soft, thick and deep. Beast Mode is a perfect fit for Australian conditions providing easy keeping cattle that have the thickness, cover and mid maturity pattern to hit all Australian markets while leaving behind a functional and desirable cow herd.

BEN NEVIS PRIMUS
BEN NEVIS PROPOGATE
BANQUET NIXON
BEN NEVIS PODIUM
BEN NEVIS NEWSFLASH A very special bull for us from our favourite donor Ben Nevis Jean H215 who broke the Australian Mature Cow record selling for $82,000 to Bannaby and Banquet. He combines Jean H215 he combines her traditional quality with Proceed’s carcase and is docile, thick, an outcross and an ultimate spunk. Purchased by Bannaby Angus for $24,000 in 2018.
BEN NEVIS PRIMUS This is Newsflash’s full ET brother who sold to Merit Farms in 2019 and who also purchased Primus’s sister Ben Nevis Jean K80 for $38,000. Primus has given us extra punch and a the distinct proud stance he inherited from his famous dam plus a unique genetic package with muscle and marbling.
BEN NEVIS PROPOGATE The $28,000 top price bull from our 2019 sale has left us with a stunning line of thin skinned, super performance sires in his mould. The have extra extension and sire appeal and like him, a wealth of IMF and EMA under the hide.
BANQUET NIXON Banquet bulls always nick well with our bloodlines and Nixon is the best yet. He provides and easy calving and then a tremendous thump of weight into maturity with extra doing ability and style. We just love them.
BEN NEVIS PODIUM Well we have found an absolute diamond in Podium with the investment in our own genetics continuing to pay dividends. Expect thickness that bulges at the seams with an impeccable temperament, a moderate maturity pattern and a solid constitution. Podiums dam sold for $15,000 to Boambee Angus at our recent mature female dispersal and his half brother is one of the most exciting bulls we have bred in the Lot 44 Bull by Newsflash.
BEN NEVIS MONARCH M128 A simply beautiful bull who displays what we have been working towards in good old fashioned quality with a wealth of carcase under the hide. A real gentleman and breeding the house down here with soft, deep kind daughters and sons. Easy doing, slick coated and thick with excellent feet. See front cover.

This is her natural calf but he has five full brothers and sisters that we are just as excited about. Rimfire combines sire appeal, natural thickness and doability in a stylish package. He is the prototype for this Beast Mode x Infinity cross, which is outstanding for combining Infinity’s Angus character and carcase with Beast Modes early growth and constitution. If you miss him his full brother sells as Lot 6 and geneticals (same Sire x MGS) with the same breeding sell as Lot 5, 6, 7, 12 and 20. Suitable for heifers.

MATING TYPE ET
C R A BEXTOR 872 5205 608#
GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DD2%,NHFU Resonance is a full brother to the Lot 3 bull with a slightly more moderate growth pattern and higher IMF. Like his brother he is deep ribbed with extra thump and is super docile. A feature of this genetic combination is their feet and Resonance scores well both on Genomics, which places him in the top 2% of the breed for angle and claw, but also on his independent assessment for feet. Suitable for heifers.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DD1%,NHFU There is a lot to like about Rubix and he offers power and a different maturity pattern to the run of Beast Modes we’ve just had, with his weight largely coming through his extra length. He will produce front paddock females with long, thick spines, slick coats and superb docility. His donor dam was one of our treasures and sold for $13,000 to David Parker from Blayney at our 2020 female sale. Rubix clocked the second highest EMA in the contemporary, with excellent foot scores and EBVs in the top 1% for claw and angle.

GENETIC STATUS – Welcome to a maternal bonanza in this stunning ET bull. He comes from a long line of donor cows that offer punch and capacity, while his sire is now world famous for his ability to create magnificent cows that transmit extra IMF under the skin. This is the performance king of the 18 month old bulls. At the time of writing, he was equal highest ADG and on his scans he gets the trifecta – highest EMA, fattest and the highest IMF. We were waiting for his donor dam to get a DNA profile so check his figures online after 18 August to get the latest, as these are just interims. R313 will be suitable for heifers and will add extra stretch and weight to his progeny. Suitable for heifers.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU This is the last of the Monarch's in this 18 month section and he is an absolute character. He helped me write most of the comments, sitting beside me in the paddock chewing his cud a metre away when he could have had the whole paddock. We just love this pedigree as it brings out all the old fashioned Angus traits – like a great head, constitution, doing ability and softness, while adding some extra punch in the muscle and carcase department. Highly recommended. Top 1% claw.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAF,DDFU,NHF The last of the Beast Modes in this run of older bulls before the yearlings start. I feel like a broken record telling you he is a curve bender with a both calving ease and ability to punch out heavy weaners – but that’s what Beast Mode consistently does and why he is so popular. Add to it the extra rib and softness he will put into his females and you can see why we love the Beast Mode sons so much. He is also a foot improver with claw and angle in the top 10%. SPRING DROP YEARLINGS 12 – 14 MONTHS OF AGE NOTE AGE DIFFERENCE: these bulls are on average six months younger than Lots 1 – 27 (Autumn drop bulls). They are well grown yearling bulls who are ready to work, semen tested, vet inspected and structurally assessed. Just because he is a yearling doesn't make him a heifer bull, so please continue to check for our recommendations. Some of this contemporary group were too young to scan at time of printing so please check online at AuctionsPlus for their updated figures after August 18. We are very proud of this draft and welcome your inspection.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU Introducing the lead off bull for our Spring drop section and what a simply magnificent creature he is. He exhibits the pure quality that made the breed famous and that goes over and above pure science. To break down his qualities lets first look at his outlook and strength of spine, his natural thickness which has depth, volume and softness, and carries deep into his hock. He ties deep in his quarter and his flank and has harmonic balance. Note the extra softness and suppleness of his fine skin and the placid nature of his demeanour and know he is an extraordinary bull, an outcross to most genetics and a unique individual. Equal second highest EMA and fat scan, fifth highest IMF scan. Top % – 7% across the board for the new research $ index values. Semen collected. Suitable for heifers.

He is a stunning bull and like all our Nixon’s soft, deep and they have that something special. He ranks first on fat and equal fourth on EMA, so it’s no surprise he shines. This guy takes special to a whole new level because he combines his stunning phenotype with an equally stunning set of arithmetic, and backs it up with his actual performance being the highest ADG, equal second highest EMA, Fat, and IMF. These are the same feats achieved by his Sire, the $28,000 Ben Nevis Propogate in 2019. Add to that he is puppy dog quiet, 6.5 frame with foot scores in the top 10% of the breed and you have yourself my favourite bull in the sale and we believe a game changer. He is only 13 months old here, but is a genuine Stud Sire prospect and we have collected semen to use ourselves. Due to his scans and weight we expect his EBVs to improve with the next group run so check online pre-sale for updates. Suitable for heifers. Selection Indexes

R220 is so handsome we chose him to head up our advert campaign, as he has a beautiful head and his width of jaw follows right throughout his body.

He has a great head, thick top and is in the top 1% for all his growth traits as well as scanning fifth highest for IMF. This is Ben Nevis genetics at its best.

That square, good head, gets big ticks from us and reflects what we see from behind the shoulder back with natural width, depth and softness. He is backed by an excellent set of data, including results in the 4 – 7% of the breed for nine of the eleven new $ indexes and a phenomenal birth to growth spread with extra IMF. Very stylish. No matter which way you look at him there is a lot of bull to get around because he’s big, he’s thick, he’s deep and he’s not getting out of your way easily – because he is dopey quiet. He is an absolute Stud from his chiselled square jaw to his bold rack of rib and weighty hindquarter. The top 1% scores for both claw and angle are just the icing on the cake, which includes powerful growth and extra IMF. We think he has stud potential. Not bad for a heifers first calf! GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAF,DDFU,NHFU This is the first of the Podium calves on offer and they probably get 'Best on Ground' as a sire group. They are a slam dunk for the type of bull we are striving for – masculine, thick, deep, soft and quiet. R167 is a cracking calf in anyone’s book. He reminds us of the Hulk when he busts the seams of his pants with muscle, or “suns out guns out” is an expression that comes to mind when I look at him. We love his big square jaw and even though he is younger it’s not a surprise he scanned equal fifth for EMA. Just a lovely bull.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAF,DDFU,NHFU Rocky is a carbon copy of his stablemate in the Lot before. Once again he is a cracking heifer’s first calf and is one of the best sire prospects in the sale for delivering extra thickness without losing softness and transmitting his super docile nature. You can see why we are so excited by Podium. He is an absolute spunk and a standout every time you go through the mob and is easily one of our favourites. Suitable for heifers.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDF,NHFU Like all great bulls, Rambo – or 'The Dentist' as he is affectionately called here due to his number 230 (tooth hurty), was a standout as a calf. As he developed bit by bit the evidence and odds starting stacking in his favour. On his maternal side his brother Podium was kicking goals as our own Stud Sire (see Lots 41, 42, 58, 63 and 69) and his dam sold to astute breeder Margot Duncan at Boambee for $15,000. On his sire side Newsflash, purchased by Bannaby in 2018 for $28,000, also began kicking goals through his role as an AI Sire in Breeder Genetics and his Grandam Ben Nevis Jean H215 then sold to Bannaby and Banquet for an Australian Mature Cow record of $82,000. Then came Genomics and identified him in the top 1 – 2% of bulls across the board for all Indexes – both old and new (Research Indexes). With an outcross pedigree free of all the usuals like Berkley, Regent and Prophet, with an IMF in the top 2% of the country he truly is unique. In the flesh he is lovely with a solid sires head, thick soft top and expressive hindquarter. He is one of the most docile bulls in the sale and an absolute pleasure to work with. He is only 12 months old, but he is strong, fit and ready to work and his genetic path has been predestined. It won’t change with age so rather than hold him as a two year old we will collect him for own use and sell him now. Suitable for heifers. See alternate photo on page 30.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAF,DDFU,NHFU We are pleased that the quality of bulls continues to be intense and we are proud to offer them. It was always going to be hard to follow on from Rambo, but Rhett is also a top sire prospect. He has a magnificent Ben Nevis pedigree, with both sides stacking carcase, outcross excellence and maternal bliss. In the flesh he really has the wow factor with lots of weight, depth and length through the hind quarter giving him that elusive balance we strive for, as well as a divine skin. He again has evidence of his eliteness stacked behind him with pedigree, an excellent structure score sheet and his actual performance placing him equal fourth for IMF and third for ADG. He has a birthmark on his hip of no consequence and won’t breed on. We think he is an excellent bull. Top notch prospect here.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU We are so proud of the job that full brothers Primus and Newsflash have done for us to disseminate H215’s unique thickness, doability and proud outlook to our herd. While one of the younger bulls in the sale, Romantic (wow I really dug deep for that name), offers us an impeccable pedigree, stacked with carcase and maternal attributes to suit our Australian conditions. R412 is all thick juicy meat packed into a stylish package. He is proud with stud sire appeal and he has extra spring of rib and balance. He doesn’t just walk the walk, he talks the talk, with the fourth highest ADG and equal second highest IMF scan, this is backed up by his EBV’s and excellent $ indexes. For the new research $ Index values he ranks in the top 7 – 15% across the board for profitability. Suitable for heifers.

Raindance was a ball tearer of a bull calf who was slightly disadvantaged due to his mum’s injury, but is really showing his style now. We used Paratrooper heavily again based on progeny like this. He is longer bodied and stronger topped with a magic butterfly top that carries out through his hip and into the seat of his pants. What fabulous sire appeal he possesses. MATING TYPE Natural
G A R PROGRESSSV
GENETIC STATUS AMF,CAF,DDF,NHF Royalist is very square and tidy in his pattern and he has extra length. Like all the Primus calves he has that extra sire appeal with his masculine head, square jaw and neck extension. He carries this through with more width to his top and loin but extra length. Not only will his steers be right in the pocket for premium markets but he will leave you with a beautiful line of daughters.

TE MANIA EMPEROR E343PV
GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU This is the second last of the Monarchs to sell and like his sire he is super quiet. Phenotypically he is a very well put together bull showing lots of potential to grow on and fill out into a beautiful bull. He is thick in behind the shoulder with extra depth of rib and a strong straight spine, and this is where his extra power in the weight department comes from. With volume and softness like this he will be a great sire of big capacity daughters.

He is a genetical to Lot 44, with a nice wide spine and an explosion of muscle out his hip and down to his lower quarter, keeping his base width from there to the chest floor. This makes for a very robust and excellent structure. Despite being one of the youngest in the contemporary he ranks equal third on fat, which is a great indicator of his doing ability. YON FUTURE FOCUS T219#
GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAF,DDFU,NHFU The second last of the Full Force calves to sell here today which are designed to be born small and then grow fast, with extra muscle expression and a thumping EMA. You can see that in this young sire with his butterfly top, but what we like most about him is the extra quality coming through in his skin and the soft silky seat of his pants. This tells us he has that doing ability and quality. A really nice bull that is suitable for heifers.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU What a star lot later in the sale to get your teeth into. When it comes to actual performance in the contemporary Ratchet takes it up a notch (very bad Dad joke). As a heifer’s first calf he was small born but then grew to have this extra capacity and volume. He is deep and soft throughout and very fluid in his movement and structure, with a lovely front end so he will breed stunning daughters. He is also a foot improver with claw in the top 12% and angle in the top1%. His scans just blow us away and he posts the very best IMF scan and equal first Fat scan. He will be a terrific doer like his grandsire we call Fatty (Ascot Global). We really like this bull.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAF,DDFU,NHFU Revolution is an impeccably bred bull that will make an ideal bull for heifers, with the ability for those progeny to really kick goals at later weights. He is one of the younger bulls in the sale and posts one of the highest ADG’s. He has a good smooth shoulder with a good angle, a long neck and a smaller head making him an ideal calving ease bull. Just love his silky skin and deep flank. A stylish young bull. Suitable for heifers.

Rip (Go Yellowstone fans), is very structurally correct, moves really well and will grow into a big capacity bull. His ability to have good condition in a mid maturity pattern, plus natural thickness, will not only give you flexibility in which markets you choose for his progeny, but the ability to go for the premium end of the lucrative Jap B3 and branded beef trades. Use to add doability, marbling and weight. Photo on page 41.

He packs a punch but he has so much natural softness and depth of flank and rib with that thickness and is very square and correct. ID NBNR145
MATING TYPE Natural
ASCOT HALLMARK H147PV
GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU This heifer's first calf gets big ticks in our book. He is the last of our Podiums to sell and he just goes to show the consistency and quality of this sire group. That ability to stamp progeny is so valuable and it’s quite rare so we are just delighted. R145 has an impeccable structure with an ideal shape to be a heifer bull, particularly through his front end. He is deeper through the flank and hindquarter and carries good width and muscle expression through the stifle – a trait which will enable extra weight in his progeny at the other end. For the new research $ Index values he ranks in the top 1 – 7% across the board for profitability. Suitable for heifers.

GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU P149 ends a magnificent run of Beast Mode sons that we have been fortunate enough to present to you today. Beast Mode has been a breakthrough for our breed and has been difficult to source due to his ownership in the States. We were very fortunate to get in early and have been able to respond for the increased demand for them by securing semen when we could. This last son is pretty much carbon copy for the group. He is a heifer’s first calf and has grown into a lovely young bull with extra depth and rib and doing ability. His square jaw is reflected in his width of top, quarter and stifle. He boasts a phenomenal set of arithmetic and this produces $ indexes across the board in the top 3 – 4%. Suitable for heifers.

EF COMPLEMENT 8088PV
GENETIC STATUS AMFU,CAFU,DDFU,NHFU The Rachis x Bartel females are the stars of our herd combining the right amount of marbling and combining it with natural softness from the Judo’s. By adding Command we add an extra dimension in muscle shape to add to that to get the perfect genetic combination. R411 is a heifer’s first calf and is the equal youngest bull in the sale, but he is strong, fit, well grown, semen tested and ready to work. His progeny will be born easily, but will grow out well with plenty of carcase shape. For the new research $ Index values he ranks in the 20% across the board for profitability. Suitable for heifers.

BEN NEVIS JEAN BREAKS RECORD Ben Nevis Jean H215 sold for Australia’s Record Mature Cow Price of $82,000 to Bannaby Angus and Banquet Angus, 13 October 2020. We love this photo – it looks like we are raising money to rebuild the Church roof and we don’t have two pennies to rub together, but the symbolism is that they are the old shearers huts and Dad gave me a choice when I was 15 to choose merino’s or cattle. I chose cattle of course. I go to great lengths to avoid it in photos and videos and here it is front and centre in the most prominent photo of our story to date.
Primus who features here, as well as the Grandam of the highly acclaimed Ben Nevis Metamorphic who has had such success at Banquet and Twin Oaks (NZ). It also includes our good friends and colleagues the lads at Nutrien Boulton's – Australia’s highest grossing AuctionsPlus Agents for three years running. How lucky are we.
We were delighted that Jean went to such a good home. She is the Mother of our Stud Sires including Newsflash, who features in the Breeder Genetics AI catalogue with Jack Laurie and his full brother
THANK YOU Thank you to all who attended our 2021 sale. We wish successful purchasers all the best with their Ben Nevis yearling bulls. Thank you to our guest auctioneer Paul Dooley for his sound and practical advice, and his ability to judge cattle. Please call Lockie Falls to arrange transport for free delivery to major centres (see page 4).

UNDERSTANDING THE TRANSTASMAN ANGUS CATTLE EVALUATION WHAT IS THE TRANSTASMAN ANGUS CATTLE EVALUATION? The TransTasman Angus Cattle Evaluation (TACE) is the genetic evaluation program adopted by Angus Australia for Angus and Angus infused beef cattle. TACE uses Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits (eg. weight, carcase, fertility). TACE includes pedigree, performance and genomic information from the Angus Australia and New Zealand Angus Association databases to evaluate the genetics of animals across Australia and New Zealand. TACE analyses are conducted by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI), using beef genetic evaluation software developed by the Animal Genetics and Breeding Unit (AGBU), a joint institute of NSW Agriculture and the University of New England, and Meat and Livestock Australia Limited (MLA).
Or similarly, a bull with an IMF EBV of +3.0 would be expected to produce progeny with on average, 1% more intramuscular fat in a 400kg carcase than a bull with a IMF EBV of +1.0 (ie. 2% difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
USING EBVS TO BENCHMARK AN ANIMAL’S GENETICS: EBVs can also be used to benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to the genetics of other Angus/Angus infused animals in Australia and New Zealand. To benchmark an animal’s genetics relative to other Angus animals, an animal’s EBV can be compared to the EBV reference tables, which provide: • the breed average EBV • the percentile bands table The current breed average EBV is listed on the bottom of each page in this publication, while the current EBV reference tables are included at the end of these introductory notes.
WHAT IS AN EBV? An animal’s breeding value can be defined as its genetic merit for each trait. While it is not possible to determine an animal’s true breeding value, it is possible to estimate it. These estimates of an animal’s true breeding value are called EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values).
For easy reference, the percentile band in which an animal’s EBV ranks is also published in association with the EBV.
CONSIDERING ACCURACY: An accuracy value is published with each EBV, and is usually displayed as a percentage value immediately below the EBV. The accuracy value provides an indication of the reliability of the EBV in estimating the animal’s genetics (or true breeding value), and is an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of the EBV. EBVs with accuracy values below 50% should be considered as preliminary or of low accuracy, 50 – 74% as of medium accuracy, 75 – 90% of medium to high accuracy, and 90% or greater as high accuracy.
EBVs are expressed as the difference between an individual animal’s genetics and a historical genetic level (ie. group of animals) within the TACE genetic evaluation, and are reported in the units in which the measurements are taken.
USING EBVS TO COMPARE THE GENETICS OF TWO ANIMALS: TACE EBVs can be used to estimate the expected difference in the genetics of two animals, with the expected difference equating to half the difference in the EBVs of the animals, all other things being equal (eg. they are joined to the same animal/s). For example, a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +60 would be expected to produce progeny that are, on average, 10kg heavier at 200 days of age than a bull with a 200 Day Growth EBV of +40kg (ie. 20kg difference between the sire’s EBVs, then halved as the sire only contributes half the genetics).
DESCRIPTION OF TACE EBVS: EBVs are calculated for a range of traits within TACE, covering calving ease, growth, fertility, maternal performance, carcase merit, feed efficiency and structural soundness. A description of each EBV included in this catalogue is available at www.angusaustralia.com.au.

THANK YOU We recently were fortunate enough to go on a family camping trip to the Top End and Gulf for a month. “Apparently” it has been a bastard of a winter (after coming home we now believe you all), and we want to thank Hamish Worthing for going above and beyond to look after the place for us, allowing us to have such a great opportunity. You’re a champion Hamish and we owe you big time!! We have a policy of working with people who are professional but also we like to hang with – this is especially the case with our agents Miles Archdale, Matt Larkings and Simon Newton from Nutrien Boulton's. If you ever need to add a bit of manic energy to the mic – just add Milo. Megan Scrivener is the closest thing to a business angel I know – a rare

talent who is as practical as she is creative. Thank you always for making great marketing material for us – I know no better. To Ben and the team at OGA, thank you for telling our story so beautifully. Garry Littlejohns – all round champion! Ben thanks especially for your wisdom, motivation and for consistently challenging us to raise the bar. To our team – Lionel, Hamish, Dorro and this year Mags, everyone has really stepped up. The workload with AI, ET, fencing, water and pasture has been met with work ethic and good humour – its much appreciated. To our family and friends who help – Mum, Ky, Frater, Jo, Rog, Sam, Hobbsy, Colleen and Jenny, we are sincerely appreciative and so lucky to have you in our corner.

THE GOOD MEAT INITIATIVE Some people may have seen us in MLA’s recent ‘Australian Good Meat’ activities aimed at engaging with the community through the stories of sustainability and provenance within the Australian red meat industry.. What started for us as a group of graziers in the depths of drought, handing around a dog eared copy of “From Dirt to Soil” by Gabe Brown, has since become a ground swell of positive change for beef producers. It gave us hope, as well as a way forward for the future. We are just starting, but our path toward regenerative agriculture has been a bit of a light bulb moment for us. We are very excited about a future where we see beef and our country as being part of the solution
“Just a thank you for the production of such lovely quiet bulls. A delight to handle. Bruce had a mild heart attack late last year and today was the first day he has helped with the stock. We took the bulls out after their nine weeks with the cows. They walked past Bruce into a yard ... no fighting ... stood or grazed until the cows were taken away. Bruce was so confident when we finished... such a relief for me ... he realised it was so easy. Then they just meandered off to their paddock. So just wanted to say a big thank you to all at Ben Nevis for the effort you put into your bulls temperament as well as the genetics. Have a wonderful 2021.” Cheers Dee Brierley
to climate change. Cattle are a critical part of an ecosystem that is a big, functioning, natural machine that pumps carbon from the atmosphere, where it is a green house gas, and buries it deep within the soil where it does tremendous good. That being in terms of holding soil moisture and structure and feeding microbes which in turn naturally feed plants. Genetically we will continue to work hard to identify and multiply those animals who do better on less (less days on feed) but it is empowering to be working towards the same goal of creating clean, nutrient dense beef while benefitting our natural environment above and below the soil.
Low stress stock handling The guru out the back working the bulls is our friend and LSS trainer Chook Kealey. Chook grew up on a cattle and farming property in the South Burnett region of Queensland before spending the next eight years training performance horses for a variety of events. North West Queensland was home for the next seven years in a number of roles – from stock camps where helicopter mustering was a weekly occurrence, through to managing large mobs in intensive cell grazing operations. Walcha now home, where he runs sheep and cattle. A passion for animal psychology got him involved in Low Stress Stock-handling, however it is the amazing impact on people’s lives that gives him the greatest enjoyment now.
