SHARKS ALWAYS MOVE FORWARD

Each year, teachers and staff nominate and vote for the Teacher and Teacher Assistant of the year. This year, Mr. Rosa-Felix was nominated for Teacher of the Year and Mrs Stout was nominated for Teacher Assistant of the Year.
Mrs Banks, Kilby Shores Principal said, "The top 3 nominees for Teacher and Teacher Assistant of the Year were in a run off and voted for by the teachers." When asked about Mr Rosa-Felix, Mrs. Banks said, "He is dedicated to students." She also mentioned that she felt, "Great!" when she heard he had won. "He is a great candidate and represents the school well."

Mrs. Banks stated, "Ms. Stout was honored as the Teacher Assistant of the Year for the third time. She loves kids and everyone loves her "
Dr. Gordon, Superintendent of Suffolk Public Schools, was asked what makes a teacher worthy of being Teacher of the year. Dr. Gordon believes that great teachers love kids, understand the curriculum, and are well organized Teachers need to relate to kids and make lessons interesting "Teaching should be "edutainment" because kids remember fun," stated Gordon
It is clear at Kilby Shores that Mr Rosa Felix and Mrs. Stout love kids and make learning fun. Their dedication to Kilby Shores makes them great choices for Teacher of the Year

At Kilby Shores Elementary, students and teachers participate in PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support PBIS is a reward for good behavior Students must follow the SHARK expectations and earn weekly points. Every 9 weeks, students who earn 7 out of 9 Shark Points earn the PBIS celebration
For the third marking period, almost 400 students participated in the celebration. Students earned an ice cream sundae party Students received a bowl of ice cream, then chose 3 of their favorite toppings.
Ms. Jones, Guidance Counselor, was asked her opinion of PBIS at Kilby Shores Ms Jones said, "PBIS encourages kids to have great shark behavior. When they earn their reward, it's awesome to see kids having fun."
Past celebrations include a game day and a glow stick dance party Students are currently working to earn their reward for the fourth marking period

a first grader, made her ice cream sundae during the PBIS celebration.In the fall, students from Kilby Shores ran for positions in the Student Council Association, or SCA. Students created posters and gave speeches to prepare for the election. Jackson Kubinak was nominated for SCA Treasurer When Jackson won, he said, "I felt great!" Jackson stated that he hopes "to help his peers talk nicely to teachers." Other positions include: Addison Paiz, President, Sienna Hollowell, Vice President, and Abigail Delgado, Secretary. Third grade representatives include: Paisley McGee, Easton Chaney, Steven Baker, Stella Jeffers, London Savage, and Avery Debord Fourth grade representatives include: Payson Greene, Jaxon Williams, Azari Hutson, and Kawan Spells. Fifth grade representatives include: Destinee Coleman, Connie Martinez, Emma Wegrecki, Donte McLean, and Xzyhnijah Adams. Teachers Mrs Legg, Mrs Regione, and Mrs. Council sponsor the group
This year, the SCA sold lollipops to raise money for the Suffolk Humane Society Through their hard work, the student council was able to donate $300.00 to support the Humane Society. Puppies from the Humane Society came to thank the students for their donation
Students in grades 3-5 published their first newspaper Students interviewed and wrote news stories, took photographs, and designed the layout of the paper
Twice a month, students are selected to choose a book from the school's book vending machine. Teachers select students and their names are called over the morning announcements to receive a token for the machine Ms Carr helps students choose a book they would like to take home The machine was bought for the school using Title I funding.
Ms Carr said, "The book vending machine has been a fun addition to Kilby Shores It promotes reading in a fun and exciting way. The students are very excited to come choose a book from the vending machine. I hope we can continue to get more and more books in students' hands."
This year almost 200 books have gone home with students thanks to the vending machine.
