We’re changing the way you shop for a mattress.

Taking On As 2013 winds down, we get both introspective and retrospective - and all of this spectiveness makes us look hard at the people we want to become. We look at the resolutions we made last year: Did we keep them? How far have we come? If you’re like most of us, resolution keeping starts out with a flurry of activity, but come February, the rest of life kicks in and suddenly, resolutions that felt so important in December, become lists on paper tucked away into a drawer. So, how do you make the resolutions of 2014 a reality? Almost 10 years ago, psychologist Dr. John Grohol came up with a list of five tips for resolution conquest:

2014 3

Schedule Success: Let’s face it, scheduling is hard for everyone. But resolutions require planning. No matter what you’re conquering in the New Year, get organized and you’ll be primed and ready to make it happen. Create a schedule, and stick to it, to make the guesswork disappear!

1

Failure is Part of the Process: Remember that setbacks happen! Just because you’re having a bad week, month, or year, doesn’t mean that you’ve been given the reason to throw in the towel. If you want results, you have to take action, and accept that every once in a while, you’ll slip up. It’s in how you handle those slip-ups that determines your success in the long term.

2

Bring in the Cavalry: Don’t go at it alone! True, no one can change anything about your life except you, but without a support system, keeping resolutions can feel close to impossible. Enlist the experts so you’re not going solo. Remember - even the mountain climbers who conquered Everest had Sherpas to guide them!

Pick Realistic Goals: This doesn’t mean, “don’t be ambitious.” Ambition is good! It helps to motivate us, and propels us to our goals. However, knowing thyself mediates ambitions that are too far-flung and unattainable. Setting realistic goals, after looking at what is actually possible, allows you to reach for something that is within your grasp (but remember, you’ll still have to reach!). Define Your Goals: This one is easy! Once you have your goals in mind, define them down to every ‘t’ so there is no room for fudging. Specifically detailing what you’re aiming for gives you the assurance that you’re not going to settle for whatever you land on. Make your success real so you can tailor your action plan to a specific outcome.

VINTAGE REVIVAL

Have you ever commented on a friend’s home decor and gotten this reply: “Thank you, it’s vintage”? Or, have you asked about their beautiful new kitchen chairs only to be told they got them at a garage sale or flea market? Well, it’s all due to the newest sensation that’s sweeping the nation: DIY. The trick to creating a trendy, vintage piece of furniture is to buy something old and broken, paint it to look new, and distress it to make it look old again. Pinterest is overflowing with Do-It-Yourself tutorials that can turn even the oldest piece of wood into a priceless, “vintage” piece of furniture - pending you’re successful with your DIY endeavors. Chances are, if you can hold a paintbrush, you, too, can DIY and give new life to your old furniture. Your friends won’t be able to tell if your new kitchen table came from The Pottery Barn or…some other barn. Here’s some suggestions to help you reuse, repurpose, and refinish your old furniture: - Update an old coffee table with sandpaper and a stencil. Okay, and some paint. If you still have a clunky wooden coffee table that’s seen better days, you can easily refinish it by sanding out the nicks and dents, sanding off the varnish, and covering it with a fresh coat of paint or stain. For a modern, “vintage” twist, stencil a fun design to the top or sides and finish it off with a protective, clear topcoat.

- Fix-up your dated dining room chairs by re-covering the cushions with a trendy new fabric (all you need is a staplegun) and re-staining or painting the chair frame. Again, sand out any nicks or scratches, remove any varnish, and go crazy (spray paint works best for getting in all the nooks and crannies). Be bold and pick a fun, bright color; then, pair it with a complementary, patterned fabric. - Repurpose your antique dresser into a vintage dresser by painting it a bold color and distressing it to add character and style. After you paint it (and the paint has dried), rub sandpaper over the areas where it would naturally end up distressed over time - the corners, edges, and top. When you’ve achieved the desired level of “antique” (don’t go too crazy!), wipe the piece down and apply a clear finish. For an even more obvious distress, paint the furniture with a bright, fun color. Rub wax over the areas you plan on distressing and repaint it in a muted or neutral color. When the top coat is dry, rub steel wool over the areas you’ve waxed and remove the top layer of paint. Your fun, bright color will shine through! So, get that old wooden chest out of the garage, spruce it up, and show it off as your newest vintage find. Hit the neighborhood garage sales and scour the thrift stores. When you can DIY, your options are limitless.

If you haven’t noticed, we at Gardner’s Mattress & More love supporting local businesses. Which is why, when Rachel Reinmiller was fresh out of culinary scho we decided to take a chance. We gave h opportunity to cater for some of our Sle Easy workshops - and boy are we glad w did. Not only did she provide delicious s for our 20-50 guests, but she pulled it all off flawlessly! And we could “sleep easy” knowing the event was in good hands. According to Rachel, we work together like cheese and fine wine. She says, “It was nice to cater for a company that cared about the food as much as I did.” She was extremely grateful for the opportunity and believes that working with Gardner’s Mattress & More helped launch her catering career! Boo-ya.

Since then, Rachel has had a hand in op her own business, Commonwealth on Q It’s the joint efforts of herself, her husba and another couple, but Rachel is respo for the kitchen. “Commonwealth on Que a cafe by day, and event space by night says. “We serve breakfast and lunch, all every day, we have a seasonal menu, an endorse locally.” But that’s not the coole

Says Hello to 2014 It’s time for an update on the Gardner’s guys. Some of you know us personally, but many do not. It’s often with our type of business that you encounter most of us during your experience with Gardner’s. Perhaps you made more than one visit to Gardner’s and worked with Pete, Ben, Jeff, or John, talked with John on the phone to schedule delivery, and let Andy and Chris into your home to deliver your new bed. As always, thanks for your business.

graduation celebrations…you name it, we’ve hosted it!” said Rachel. Sounds good to us! So if you’re looking for a fun new restaurant to try, head to Commonwealth on Queen - chances are, we’ll be there too. Like them on Facebook at: facebook.com/CommonwealthOnQueen

It’s been an exciting year for the guys on staff. Pete got engaged, John’s wife gave birth to a baby boy named Drew, Andy launched his photography business - Hatha Photography with his first professional magazine shoot, and Chris’s band, Center, recorded a new album and had a CD release party at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster.

As for Ben and Jeff, we wrote a book about mattress retailing and launched a business to help other mattress retailers across the country do what we do. We’re out to change the way mattresses are sold and the consumer perception of the bedding industry, one store at a time! 2013 was a busy year for all of us! We’re really looking forward to 2014, and have our eyes set on big things. We’ve added a couple new product lines which you’ll hear about in February’s issue and are always tweaking things to provide the best possible customer experience. We hope your 2014 is great too!
